Stewart Downing picks up the plaudits with a brilliant match-winner as Liverpool record a 1-0 victory in Belarus. Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Nemanja Vidic is ready to return for United’s remaining friendlies, while Chris Brunt admits he is struggling for fitness in time for the new season after picking up a calf problem:

FC Gomel 0 Liverpool 1
Brendan Rodgers chalked up a win and a clean sheet on his competitive debut as Liverpool boss last night. The former Swansea manager named a strong lineup for the Europa League third round qualifier, handing Steven Gerrard a role as the most advanced midfielder, while Fabio Borini led the line with Joe Cole and Stewart Downing on the flanks. Borini and Glen Johnson both had chances before Cole was withdrawn midway through the first-half after picking up a hamstring problem, but it’s fair to say Liverpool were lucky to go in level at half-time after their hosts spurned plenty of opportunities to break the deadlock. Martin Kelly and Lucas came on as subs in the second 45, with the latter continuing his comeback from a knee injury, though the Reds continued to lead a charmed life as Gomel spurning chance after chance. Stewart Downing eventually made the home side pay for their profligacy by firing home a superb 25-yard effort for the only goal of the game on 67 minutes – Borini had a chance to double the Reds’ lead and although he fluffed his lines, Rodgers’ men kept possession well to see out the victory.

Liverpool Starting XI: Jones; Johnson (Kelly 46), Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson (Lucas), Spearing, Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Cole (Sterling 22)

The Liverpool centre-halves made the headlines for various reasons last night, Jamie Carragher marked his 700th game for the club, while Martin Skrtel’s display at the back earned him man of the match but the main talking point surrounded Daniel Agger. Initial reports suggested the Dane was absent for the 1-0 win due to a knock but – with Barcelona and Man City both rumoured to be eying up a move – the player’s agent was somewhat cryptic, going on to say:

He is not injured in any way. Only the club and the manager can answer to why he is not in the squad. But the reports of Agger handing in a transfer request are purely nonsense. He is very happy at Liverpool.

In Other News…
Only a couple of weeks ago, Sir Alex Ferguson had doubted whether Nemanja Vidic would be ready in time for the new season but yesterday the United boss revealed his skipper is well on the road to recovery and will feature in the club’s three upcoming friendlies. With Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling still unavailable, Vidic’s return is a timely boost for United’s backline ahead of their opener with Everton on Monday August 20, though Ferguson also hinted that Phil Jones could get the nod at right-back, due to the fact that Rafael is still involved in the Olympics with Brazil:

Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training. They’re big losses at the moment and they will miss the start of the season. Rafael is away [on international duty with Brazil at the Olympics] and Fabio is away on loan so there are four defensive players that we don’t have for the back four positions. We do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, though. That will be the back four on tour. Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.

Chris Brunt has admitted he is struggling to make the start of the season for West Brom. The Irishman has failed to feature in the club’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem and with just over two weeks until the new campaign kicks off, is yet to return to full training. Speaking to the press yesterday, the Baggies midfielder conceded:

I’ve had a couple of decent days this week and I’m hoping if everything goes alright I’ll be back in full training next week. It’s really frustrating because I’ve missed out on a lot of fitness work as well. Also, I haven’t played any football yet – other than the few training sessions I got involved in. The nature of the injury means it’s difficult for me to run on it, which is a bit of a nightmare. If I want to be involved against Liverpool I’m going to have to play some football.

The biggest mistakes I can see so far from people with their initial teams are:

The 2m torres - rooney fiasco: simply start with an extra 9.5 mid and downgrade to 7.5 GW3 leaving the 2m for Rooney right there

Peoples seemingly unwavering belief in Spurs defense, even with AVB at the helm.....80% of a teams clean sheets come from the way a manager sets up his team and with AVBs notorious high line I don't see spurs keeping as many clean sheets at all, after all he had Ivanovic,Terry, Cole etc at Chelsea and claimed very few CS

What do you think the biggest mistakes so far have been in peoples RMTs??

Alternatively have a 5.0 defender and keep John Terry for the DGW and theres the 2.0 million for the transfer

Chelsea are not the clean sheet masters they once were and Spurs had a few "lucky" CS last season where they somehow managed to not concede despite loads of shots on goal

RMTs are fine the comments are the problem which are causing everyone to get basically near enough the same team. If anyone has Van Persie or Dempsey they are criticised straight away despite the fact that both will be excellent albeit expensive choices this season

I think you're missing the fact that Rooney's price will rise and Torres fall before GW2 leaving not enough cash to make the transfer in GW3.

Chelsea's defence was not suited to AVB's high line. With the right players it is extremely effective. When he was at Porto they conceded 13 goals all season or something ridiculous like that. Granted the Premier League is stronger but still it's not bad.

Not bad no but the quality of their possession when playing in Portugal was the main reason for their success in the CS department

But that is all part of AVB's philosophy. I'd expect Spurs to do the same thing. The high line is designed to always put pressure on the opposition leading to higher levels of possession. The only real issue it has is if someone gets through the line.

People being brainwashed into thinking Torres is suddenly going to bang the goals in despite being poor for several years, but knowing in their heart of hearts he's going to flop so planning to ditch him after 1 week.

      Mad, contradictory planning.

If Torres did not have DGW I would of started with Rooney. He is a 1 week punt agsint 2 weaker sides that may just pay off before jumping ship to the more consistant performer of Rooney.

Then only to find out 1 of the Arsenal new crop are racking up FPL points and switching Rooney to him (Podolski?) anyway and having a fortune to spend to upgrade the midfield

Newcastle don't actually have a really decent run of fixtures the entire season, it is going to be purely form-based if anyone is going to go near them. Arguable GW9 - GW15 but that's not a massive run and that has Liverpool and Stoke away games.

Not once do they have more than 4 winnable games in a row.

Stumbling blocks were Lille buying a replacement (which they now have done) and transfer fee (we've just improved the offer) so hopefully it'll be done in time to integrate him before the 1st PL game.

    Hi everyone!
usually i post plenty of questions per post and contribute little back and this post will be no different 🙂

Thinking of a team name this year is difficult last season i was Power 2B Strong ( a Disney reference)

this season my short list include
    so new shortlist
Bad Kompany (in reference to one of my heavy hitter defenders)
Veni Vidic Vici (a play on words of the old latin phrase meaning came, saw, Conquered i also have vidic)
Roon N Friends (Like Coon N friends from southpark + i have rooney)
Oliver Khan-Can (reference to the star Keeper that could :D)
    and any new ones
my team looks like this, team names that incorporate players would be greatly appreciated as would any input!
    Hart,henderson
    Vidic,Kompany,Hangeland, Cuellar, Clynne
    Silva,Kagawa,Noble,Maloney,Guthrie
    Rooney, Graham, Torres

thanks for the input, i'll change the side closer to the day, right now just a rough draft 🙂

i too enjoy Veni Vidic Vici
but, sadly, i didn't come up with it myself and i doubt i'll be the only person using it

        And that's the danger.

I haven't dared to switch Aguero to Tevez as I know if I do the money will vanish into the rest of the team and there's no way I'll be able to squeeze it back out if I decide I want Aguero after all!

Im not so sure. City look like a different team with Tevez in, his all round play and work rate is excellent. I firmly believe that City wouldnt have won the title without him starting the last 6 games and if they want to retain it they'll need him.

          Right..and youre saying he wont?
I think the score over the course of the season is irrelevant as there is no way youd keep either for the entire season anyway. But considering rotation and the fact Tevez was doing sll the dirty work this season, id probably put money on Aguero outscoring Tevez by 50 points. Then you have to factor in captaincy also..

rooney wouldnt be worth £10m let alone £12m in FPL if you took his penalties and freekicks away, same can be said for baines

Rotating Rangel and Hangeland with Lescott(/Agger?) and Cole in for the start with Cole going to Vidic/Evra.

Then having a couple Spurs midfielders with pen takers filling up the remaining spots, Noble, Sinclair and Taarabt.

Relying a lot on Tevez but doing the Torres>Rooney move with Pog.

Fair point, but last season Swansea had quite alot of decisions their way. Only the two Manchester clubs got awarded more penalties than the Swans. So this could very much reduce his output if they get a more average amount of penalties awarded which will also mean less bonus so quite alo less points?

      Close call.

If Rooney is in your team, go Siggy.

    Hello Everyone,

With all the uncertainty surrounding DDG and the United defense, is anyone considering Rferdinand? Do you reckon that having United defensive cover is important enough to spend the 7.0 on Vidic until the dust settles?

Spending on Rio is not a bad idea.

I'm waiting to GW3 to bring in Man U defence. Don't see it as too vital until then and hopefully by then we'll know who's first choice and who is really injured.

Would be interested to hear when people would plan to play the first wc.

I also wonder what percentage of people end up playing it in week 1-3 out of desperation!

    Thoughts?

I think waiting for a juicy DGW is the best option. By that i mean any of United, City, Spurs, Che, Arsenal, Liverpool(if in form) playing 2 weak teams.

All depends on what shape my team. I've always played it around GW3 previously 😕

      To good effect mind.

Trouble is if you wait too long you pay overs for those that have increased in value already

Did last seasons extra wildcard on GW1 make much of a difference to you all? Hopefully they'll be better prepared this year!

It hindered me I think. It gave my rivals chance to change their awful teams based on which players were actually starting. I would hate it to happen again this year.
