Everton’s season finally got started with their win against Birmingham in Gameweek 7 but despite languishing in the relegation zone, defensively they have actually performed well. In terms of goals conceded they are sitting in fourth place behind Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham, and that is despite the three conceded against Man United at Goodison. With two clean sheets in their last two games and a reasonable run of fixtures ahead, we can now start to take a serious look at the various options in the Everton defence.

While Seamus Coleman offers a great differential option , the form and proven Fantasy potential of Leighton Baines looks too much to ignore; his nailed-on starting role and constant attacking threat has seen him shoot up to third place in our defenders Watchlist rankings this week.

The price tag is of course an issue; an FPL value of 6.8 is a lot of money to part with for an Everton defender, but at least you can be confident of getting a consistent performer, that will earn you points at both ends of the field.

In the 08/09 season Leighton Baines scored an incredible 105 points in the second half of the season, and was far and away the highest scoring defender across these 19 games. To put this into context, in the same period, Didier Drogba scored 60 points, and even Ronaldo only managed 109. Everton kept 11 clean sheets over this spell, and of course, the team’s defensive performance will play a big part in his eventual points tally, but it’s Baines’ individual attacking threat which makes him such a key Fantasy prospect.

Even without Steven Pienaar, the vast majority of Everton’s attacking play comes from the left, and Baines is constantly looking to get into advanced positions to cross the ball into the centre. The chalkboards below highlight just how central Baines is to Everton’s attacking play; taken from Everton’s last game against Birmingham, they compare the number of passes made by Baines and Coleman, who was playing on the right of midfield.

Members can delve further into their Opta stats which only go to provide further evidence of Baines’ performances this season. His stats for “Successful Crosses”, “Key Passes” and “Successful Passes in the Oppositions Half” in particular, illustrate his value to Everton’s attacking play. The comparison with Fantasy favourite Gareth Bale in terms of passing, crosses and touches, is also interesting and goes some way to show just how influential Baines has become.

Forthcoming fixtures are a bit of a mixed bag. A Merseyside derby is never easy, but with the recent turmoil and Liverpool’s poor form so far this season, David Moyes’ men will fancy their chances of taking all three points on Sunday. Torres looks to have recovered sufficiently to take part in this one while Jagielka looks likely to miss out, but a third clean sheet in a row is still a distinct possibility at home. A tricky game away to Tottenham follows, but after this fixtures lighten up considerably (STK blp BOL ARS sun WBA), making Baines a very solid mid-term investment leading up to the Christmas period.

Rooney hasn't performed since way before the World Cup so I can't understand everyone expecting him to suddenly switch it on.

Berba is on fire though and is an obvious choice over Rooney.

Raises a massive question over whether I can get rid of Malouda.... Carlo just said that Drogba wont travel to Moscow either, so I guess that there is a possibility that he may miss the Wolves game...

I've had flu before. You know it's not a cold because you feel bruised all over, and even your hair hurts.

But even though I did stay in bed for 2 whole days, I could have gone out, I'm just lazy. I was still ill when I did go out, but I was so bored by then I had to.

That move will do more harm than good, I can see him being a disruptive influence in the dressing room. And think about the state of the pitches, he's gonna be slipping all over the place in his flipflops.

    Krul (Foster)
    Dann Mummy Alcaraz
    Bale Malouda Adam VDV Nani
    Berbatov(c) Carroll

    Subs: Jara Simpson Drogba

As I'm on WC and with Bale > Fabs looking likely for GW10, any changes you'd make for the next 2 weeks?

Brilliant - my league leader has had Drogba (c) all season (and not made *any* transfers...) so I might have a good chance to catch up this week. That said, his back-up will either be A Cole (form) or Milner (price) so expect a blistering performance from whichever one of them it turns out to be 😛

Malouda is simply less appealing now as he does not have Drog to feed off/supply.

He might get a few free-kicks though. Which will end up in row Z.

That's one way of looking at it, but it feels plain wrong to go into any match without any Chelsea players. Which is what would happen if I transferred Malouda out for Nani.

I know Anelka is the striker to replace Drogba but with kakuta being the left side player then surely Anelka and Malouda will swop around some...but mainly have Malouda in the middle...as I haven't ever seen him patrol that area for the majority of a game...

That Malouda has basically been playing as a support striker all season... With the way Cole bombs up the pitch and pretty much plays on the wing, Malouda drifts inside and plays up with Drogba at times...

I haven't seen any average position maps, but I'd imagine that Malouda's average position would be almost as high up the pitch as Drogba's.

                Pfff.

Me and AP having our "this season could be built around Malouda" I remember chat.

And after community shield you saw the merits of Cole as a left winger.

Plus "Having Lampard made things easier remember" right until the very last day... 😀

“Having Lampard made things easier remember”

That was only because I wanted to get Fabregas in as easily as possible, and thought that he'd be available for the Blackpool game. I was going to have Malouda and Lampard, so your quote isn't relevant at all.

                    Eh,

The lampard quote was to state that you were considering him

My main point was about your orginal pre season views on Cole until you saw him in the Cup.

Ugh looks like I may have a hard time fielding a decent 11 with the recent Drogba news. Any more word on whether Toure will start this week or not? If not then looks like I'll have to start Jara against United or take another 4 point hit to bring in someone for Toure? Here's what my squad was set to look like before the Drogs news:

    Hahnemann
    Konchesky - Enrique - ShawX
    Malouda - Nani (C) - Dempsey - VDV
    Drogba - Berbatov - Carrol

Bench: Foster - Toure - Jara - Alex
