Alex McLeish’s first foray into the January transfer market begins with the acquisition of Tottenham’s David Bentley on loan until the end of the season. Big Eck recently expressed his desire to swell the Birmingham ranks by two or three players and the arrival of Bentley may counter the possible departure of Sebastian Larsson, as City look to reinforce the right hand side of midfield.

Whether it’s through attitude or application, Bentley has never quite reached the heights his ability has sometimes threatened to scale and, given that Tottenham paid Blackburn Rovers a staggering £15m for his services, a loan move away from White Hart Lane illustrates just how much his stock has fallen over the last two years.

McLeish has wasted no time in laying down the gauntlet to Bentley, as Birmingham look to climb the table. Including him in this Sunday’s squad against Aston Villa, the Blues boss stated:

He has great quality and he is at an age where he has taken stock and it is time for him to show the quality which led to him playing for England. It is time for his boots to do the talking.

The Statistics
Bentley has been around the Premier League for eight seasons now, but, aside from his spell at Ewood Park, has never really nailed down a first-team spot, which shows in the fact he has made just 171 appearances over that period of time, grabbing 18 goals and 31 assists.

However, his time at Blackburn certainly highlights the winger’s capabilities if given a slot in the starting XI. In particular, Bentley’s final two seasons for the Lancashire outfit saw him miss just three league games in total and it showed in his returns: 10 goals, 20 assists and 58 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points meant he accumulated 314 Fantasy Points over just a couple of campaigns.

Having participated in just two games for Spurs this term, his time under Harry Redknapp has been a less-than-successful one and a move to a smaller club like Birmingham may result in an about-turn in fortunes.

Bentley acknowledged this upon completion of the deal, saying:

It has been a difficult time for me the last couple of years.I found it hard not being involved as much as I wanted at Tottenham. They have got some great players and you can find yourself the wrong side of the fence. But there was no fall-out with Harry Redknapp and it is time to put things aside, move on – and hopefully I can have a positive effect on Birmingham.

The aim is to resurrect my career and I love football and just want to have the chance to be playing.

The Prospects
A recent morale-boosting win at Bloomfield Road allowed Birmingham to climb out of the relegation zone but there’s no denying the club have a battle on their hands to stay up. McLeish’s team are the league’s second-lowest scorers, finding the net just twenty times this season and a new face up front could help in their quest to beat the drop.

The fact that midfielder Craig Gardner is Birmingham’s top scorer -with four goals- says everything about their ineptitude in front of goal so far and McLeish is looking to rectify that, saying:

“We are working actively, the board and myself, to try and enhance the striking positions. There are a few names we have talked about that could enhance the team.

They are trying to help me to bring those players in. You are trying to bring in a bit of quality to make sure it can improve the team. We’ve got to be bringing someone in who can go straight into the team. That is the type of player we are looking for.”

Bentley’s delivery from the right flank and set-pieces will undoubtedly give the team an added threat and if McLeish can add someone with the ability to put away the chances he creates, Bentley could find his way onto some Fantasy Manager’s radars, given that his price, £5.7m, is relatively budget-friendly. Much, though, will depend on who walks through the St Andrews “In” door between now and the end of the transfer window.

Give it a rest, Nasri has been quality this season. It showed that Arsenal are much less of an attacking threat without him and considering the number of goals he has scored this season, even you would struggle to argue that he is not important to arsenal.

Sturridge has got 7 goals in 2 games I believe (5 in a reserve game and 2 in the league cup) so I wouldn't be too suprised if he plays. I hope I find out if Malouda and/or Drogba aren't playing (is there a conference tomorrow?) because I have them both and was looking to bring a defender in before the news.

Would have to get rid of Foster to get Fabianski but I'm looking ahead to GW27.. Don't want to get in Djourou in wildcard if he is going to be out the team in 2-3 weeks before their double, how annoying would that be.

Should also be a cheap option in David Murphy from Birmingham if their TGW goes ahead anyway! 🙂

    Fabregas Nasri Nani VDV Bale

I have 1.2m in the bank and would ideally like to keep 1m in there so I can do Tevez > Drogba if and when he starts banging them in. Any opinions appreciated. :0)

Hi. Got Gerrard and need to get him out. Cant afford Fabregas, so I need to think diferent. Thinking of Dempsey, Davies or N'Zogbia because they have DGW coming up. Are there other options. Liverpool midfilders maybe?
Im also going to get in Berba or Rooney for Tevez for the DGW.

    My team:
    Foster Gordon
    Rafael Coleman Foley Eardley Hughes
    VDV Nasri Nani Adam Gerrard
    Tevez Torres Carrol

Evening guys, i've finally decided on my wildcard team and pulled the trigger.

Too late now, but RMT anyway

      Foster (Mignolet)
      Hangeland, Rafael, Djourou (Simpson, Bardsley)
      Nani, Adam, VdV, Fabs (N'Zogbia)
      Tevez (C), Torres, Campbell

I've set it up to take a reasonably big punt on the DGW, with a view to get Rooney/Berb in next week in the place of Tevez

What about this weekends games, i'm in two minds whether to put bardsley in and maybe bench Rafael (cant see them keeping a cleanie against spurs)

Also is it wise to have dropped N'Zog? I watched Fulham (v WBA IIRC) last week and they seem to have turned the corner and are pretty solid. I'd rather take a punt on the bonus point machine that is Adam than risk a forgettable week from big Charlie.

Also torn Tevez and Fabs for the big (C)

track the players who are due to rise that night.

        put them in

then at end of GW, load in the players you really want and hopefully make some profit on players that have risen!

Its very hard basically you have to put in players that will rise in price twice or more within that single gameweek then swap them back out pocketing the profit like i said its hard because a player rarely rises twice in a week and if they do chances are its because they are really good so youd want to keep them anyway

        You follow TotalFPL religously.

You bring in players before 0100 that are likely risers.

If they rise on Day 1 and rise again during the week (0.2 rise in total) you can sell that player for 0.1 more than you bought them in for. Thus making a 0.1 profit.

A player needs to rise twice in the gameweek for you to make a 0.1 profit. You have 15 slots to bring in players who will likely rise. Continue until deadline day.

basically mate, you play your wildcard at the earliest opportunity and then all week -

trade out anyone who will fall in price
bring in anyone who has chance of a .2 rise even if its someone you don't want.

For example, lets you don't want Hangeland but he will go up saturday and could go up again before the following saturday.

        - Bring him in Saturday, he goes up .1
        - Next friday night, he goes up another .1 (.2 for the week)

You could sell him on saturday morning, having made a profit of .1 on a player you never played.

        Make sense?

forget it, get it out of your mind, its not worth the hassle. Make sure you dont lose money on players you already have that have risen previously until youre sure you want to sell them at the las tminute.

In general, game-wide, forget about pricerises, they should NEVER influence your decisions unless its a thursday, theres no more games to play before the gameweek starts, and your target transfer is about to go up in price to put him out of reach.

All other transfers should be done at the last possible minute (saturday morning) if you can.

This lesson is free of charge, heed it's wise words. 😎

You cant its too late, and this week wouldnt of been aboe to make money anyway.

Theory is at start of wildcard week you buy all the players who are going to go up .2 during that week , even if you dont want them.
Then on the last day you take them out for the players you do want and keep the .1 you have made on them.

Trouble is you need lots of players in your current team that you don't want or who are the same value as you bought them for otherwise you'll lose money as soon as you take them out!
Also don't make the schoolboy error of taking out a player that you own then putting him back in before deadline as he will cost you mote than you sold him for!!
