Alex McLeish’s first foray into the January transfer market begins with the acquisition of Tottenham’s David Bentley on loan until the end of the season. Big Eck recently expressed his desire to swell the Birmingham ranks by two or three players and the arrival of Bentley may counter the possible departure of Sebastian Larsson, as City look to reinforce the right hand side of midfield.

Whether it’s through attitude or application, Bentley has never quite reached the heights his ability has sometimes threatened to scale and, given that Tottenham paid Blackburn Rovers a staggering £15m for his services, a loan move away from White Hart Lane illustrates just how much his stock has fallen over the last two years.

McLeish has wasted no time in laying down the gauntlet to Bentley, as Birmingham look to climb the table. Including him in this Sunday’s squad against Aston Villa, the Blues boss stated:

He has great quality and he is at an age where he has taken stock and it is time for him to show the quality which led to him playing for England. It is time for his boots to do the talking.

The Statistics
Bentley has been around the Premier League for eight seasons now, but, aside from his spell at Ewood Park, has never really nailed down a first-team spot, which shows in the fact he has made just 171 appearances over that period of time, grabbing 18 goals and 31 assists.

However, his time at Blackburn certainly highlights the winger’s capabilities if given a slot in the starting XI. In particular, Bentley’s final two seasons for the Lancashire outfit saw him miss just three league games in total and it showed in his returns: 10 goals, 20 assists and 58 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points meant he accumulated 314 Fantasy Points over just a couple of campaigns.

Having participated in just two games for Spurs this term, his time under Harry Redknapp has been a less-than-successful one and a move to a smaller club like Birmingham may result in an about-turn in fortunes.

Bentley acknowledged this upon completion of the deal, saying:

It has been a difficult time for me the last couple of years.I found it hard not being involved as much as I wanted at Tottenham. They have got some great players and you can find yourself the wrong side of the fence. But there was no fall-out with Harry Redknapp and it is time to put things aside, move on – and hopefully I can have a positive effect on Birmingham.

The aim is to resurrect my career and I love football and just want to have the chance to be playing.

The Prospects
A recent morale-boosting win at Bloomfield Road allowed Birmingham to climb out of the relegation zone but there’s no denying the club have a battle on their hands to stay up. McLeish’s team are the league’s second-lowest scorers, finding the net just twenty times this season and a new face up front could help in their quest to beat the drop.

The fact that midfielder Craig Gardner is Birmingham’s top scorer -with four goals- says everything about their ineptitude in front of goal so far and McLeish is looking to rectify that, saying:

“We are working actively, the board and myself, to try and enhance the striking positions. There are a few names we have talked about that could enhance the team.

They are trying to help me to bring those players in. You are trying to bring in a bit of quality to make sure it can improve the team. We’ve got to be bringing someone in who can go straight into the team. That is the type of player we are looking for.”

Bentley’s delivery from the right flank and set-pieces will undoubtedly give the team an added threat and if McLeish can add someone with the ability to put away the chances he creates, Bentley could find his way onto some Fantasy Manager’s radars, given that his price, £5.7m, is relatively budget-friendly. Much, though, will depend on who walks through the St Andrews “In” door between now and the end of the transfer window.

Alright chaps, I asked this earlier in the week and got a variety of answers (so thanks for nothing!)...

Which three defenders to play this week ❓

Vidic - away at Tottenham who I can't see not scoring. Always a threat from set pieces though. Does play for Utd though, who are reasonably good I guess...

Jara - the man, the legend... West Brom never keep clean sheets, but I'm backing them to beat Blackpool who are due a bad result (and could be tired from midweek). He's also a bonus point machine (ish) and gets forward a bit. And oh yeah, I love him!

Coleman - all of the options Liverpool have at left back are dreadful, so he could do some damage. Again, I can't see Liverpool not scoring, so would be hoping for attacking returns from him, which isn't an unrealistic expectations given what's happened in recent weeks.

Kolarov - The only player I'm sure about starting. If you have him, it makes no sense to bench him... Still optimistic that he'll play, especially if City go with a narrow midfield to accommodate Tevez and Dzeko.

Johnson - Where will he play? Kelly has been decent at right back recently, and presumably Aurelio will slot back in at LB. Seems nonsensical to even consider benching a 7.1 defneder at home, but it is Liverpool we're talking about...

I have the exact same defence but Rafael instead of Vidic, basically the same anyway. I'm just going to play Kolarov, G Johnson & Jara, they all have the best fixtures. Johnson could play right mid IMO.. Coleman first sub!

I also have a defensive dilemma.

      I would play:

      Kolarov(Best chance of a CS)
Coleman(Against LIV left back, was excellent v Spurs, great form)
      Johnson.

Can see Vidic conceding. I would have Jara ahead of Vidic in sub order.

nasty set of decisions there. I'd go for Coleman, Johnson and Kolarov. Kolarov and Johnson goes without saying (johnson must be a sure starter, especially in a big game, I'd be surprised if kelly started in a game as important as this. potential for attacking returns too..) Coleman simply because he's OOP, in form, and liverpool are there for the taking at the minute. I can't see ManUtd keeping a clean sheet, nor vidic getting any attackingreturns. I'm seeing another 2pter. Jara on the bench because west brom are in the midst of a defensive crisis, and blackpool score in almost every game.

Purposefully didn't say what I'm favouring at the moment, didn't want to influence your decisions, but for what it's worth I've got the following selected at the moment:

      Kolarov Johnson Coleman (Vidic Jara)

That's with Jara as last sub, bless him.

Coleman first on the team sheet, the little fella was on my bench vs west ham and spurs.... nightmare... but its taught me never to bench him

Jara next up, WBA have a decent record against Blackpool, might not be a cleanie but is worth a shot, Jara always up for an assist (you never know)

      now it gets tricky

Id just have to say Vidic for the last place..... any other united defender i would say bench.... but Vidic is always good for a goal

Johnson and Kolorov are out of form and out of favour respectivly.

if only it was that easy..........

Dalglish is in "temporary" charge until the end of season, the board will not be giving kenny stacks of cash to buy players who a new manager may not want.

Could be looking at a few loan signings.

Im a Liverpool fan, we need more but we are not going to get it!

yeah mate, hicks and gillet friggin raped the club the scumbags and now we're dealing with the consequences. I just pray kenny can steady the ship enough this season that we have a decent starting point for rebuilding and improving next season.

          Why would he?

Hes been asked by the board to manage the team that is already in place, he knows its temporary and hes not the type of person to go demanding for players and cash. Hes humbled to be the liverpool manager again.

Im just worried about the shearer/newcastle effect. the fans certainly wont be booing anymore but blind faith doesnt always work

Because he quite simply has to. Not buying anyone is equivalant to not putting yourself out when youre on fire. If he went into the job knowing he cant buy anyone he is very very stupid.

mate he loves the club and wants to help make things right. He is a caretaker manager, you can't expect to buy players and build your own team as a caretaker manager. I've no doubt he'll tell the board what positions need improving but who comes in is not his choice seeing as he'll probably only be in the job a few months.

I really dont mean to be argumentative but literally the only way to help the club is to try and buy or loan new players. He can only harm the club by letting things continue as they are. I understand he is loyal and that is admirable but i really think he has took this job without any plan

The Spurs defence always looks good on paper, especially when they hit a favourable run. But they just seem to leak goals so I think I'll be staying away, plenty of other decent doulbe gw poential defenders IMO.

I take it you mean you sell Bosingwa or Kolarov...

Erm, don't sell either. Both have nice fixtures. If anyone has to go it should be Konchesky, but your defence is really good for this week so don't make a transfer. If I were you I'd do Pederson to N'zog or Dempsey and you'll have a really strong team for this week.

      Really?? Really?!?!

I mean, fair play to a gamble every now and again and nice call on DJ but there's a lot of obvious choices this week who could do the business and Adam really isn't one...

Have you seen how the obvious choices have been doing this season with the (c) next to their name...

Charlie Adam always seems to score against us, I said earlier I'm tempted but I'm going to the game and it would feel strange. I don't rate him but he hoovers up the bonus, albeit unfairly.

Hmm...failing to recall at this hour. But I'd say my captains have been pretty much right most weeks this season and I tend to go with the captains pole most weeks.

    Loads of Defence questions tonight, so here is mine;

Konchesky OUT who IN? (I've 5.1 to spend) and it is a one week punt only before I WC in GW24.

I'm thinking...Mummy (NEW), ShawX (BOL), Hutton (MANU), MKelly (EVE)......others?

Remember 1 week only! Thanks lads
