Our Friday night regular returns with a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. We’ve turned to a pair of London-based protagonists with strong upcoming schedules on the horizon and scoured the bargain basement for a cut-price defensive option at the DW…

Shaun Wright-Phillips

No more than a mere bench-warmer in Mark Hughes’ last few matches in charge at QPR, the winger has made his way into the starting lineup under Harry Redknapp. With Jamie Mackie moved to the lone frontman role in favour of the ineffectual Djibril Cisse, Wright-Phillips has been handed a berth on the right of the R’s midfield as the new man in charge looks to engineer a climb out the drop zone.

While the likes of Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett have been peripheral in Redknapp’s thoughts, Wright-Phillips seems to have his manager’s faith and justified his inclusion by producing an assist in last week’s 2-2 draw at Wigan. It sums up QPR’s season under Hughes that this was the winger’s first attacking returns of the campaign but with three home games in the next four (FUL, new, WBA, LIV) he’s afforded a chance to build on last weekend’s output.

Priced at 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game, it’s no surprise that Wright-Phillips has an ownership of around the 1% mark in both games but, if Redknapp is to work his magic, he could be an integral figure in his side’s battle against relegation.

Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian’s start to life at the Lane has been a distinctly underwhelming one. Vertonghen arrived in the Premier League with a goal-getting pedigree – 14 strikes in his last two seasons at Ajax is indicative of his attacking sensibilities but so far, he’s found the net just once, with a single assist also accrued.

Two clean sheets in 16 games sums up Tottenham’s lack of resilience at the back but with Benoit Assou-Ekotto soon to return from a knee injury, Andre Villas-Boas’ side could be set for an upturn in defensive returns. With a superb run of fixtures to follow (SWA, STOK, avl, sun, REA, qpr) Vertonghen looks a decent differential shout not just for this weekend but all the way up to the winter wildcard in Gameweek 22.

Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game, he’s far from cheap but as his Eredivisie stats suggest, Vertonghen has the class to prosper as Villas-Boas looks to take advantage of the festive schedule and boost his side’s chances of a top three finish.

Ronnie Stam

A raft of injuries and suspensions at the back for Wigan has afforded the Dutchman a run of starts in recent weeks. With the treatment room at the DW still seemingly packed to the rafters, Stam looks set to continue on the right of Roberto Martinez’s midfield four, with Emmerson Boyce dropping into the back-three to cover for the likes of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis.

Over his four consecutive starts, Stam hasn’t exactly propelled himself onto Fantasy radars. No goals, assists or clean sheets hardly offer too much hope but his out of position berth and rock-bottom FPL price of 3.8 may appeal to those Fantasy managers looking for a cheap defender who would free up budget further up the pitch. Priced at 4.0 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of under 3% in FPL, there are few, if indeed any, players who come cheaper with the guarantee of a start this weekend as the Latics look to put the brakes on Norwich’s recent unbeaten run.

    Hello DZoners!

    How’s this for the GW?

    Bunn
    Cuellar, Shorey, J.Enrique, Nelsen
    Sess, Michu, Fellaini
    RVP, Suarez, Ba

    Bego; McCartney, Puncheon, Mata

    1FT, thinking Cuellar–>Sagna.
Ok to go? Trying to stop taking hits here. Still worried about Enrique not starting and not having bench to fill up the spot.

I know mate but come on, you've posted the exact same thing 100 times this week. Make a transfer or two and/or propose a gameplan for a few weeks/transfers or move on.

I personally don't like any of your back four for th elong run, and I am not keen on any of your forwards. How did you end up with all that lot?

Actually got rid of Azpilicueta and Nastasic for Sag as and Vidic this week, they'll be more nailed-on. Cuellar and Morrison are next to go. Living in Abq NM ntil Monday, was working nights foir 2 years, so usually post RMTs on my break so it's between 5 to 9 pm GMT. Plan on keeping Rooney, the getting Torres/Suarez/Defoe etc for other 2 slots. Can see Suarez's great form start to dip soon as Torres is rising.

Have a dilemma like most fletch. Owners I would presume. Have 4m, so who shd I take out fletcher for?
A: suarez...then next week I will do sess + enrique to bale + hughes

B: defoe...will allow me to do sess to mata/silva without dropping enrique

    C: tevez...less rotation risk now

I would have def done fletch to torres if chel were playing. Alternatively, I can do fletch to torres next week bt then will sess to ?? This week..bale is unfit and silva off form:(

    Please advise.

It's not like RVP has had 40pt returns recently at cpt. I can see either Suarez or Defoe exploding

    Evening DZ.

I wielded ,my WC this week.

After cashing in on the double rise for Bassong this week (Shame Rooney didnt go up tonight else i could have had 0.1 extra to do Cerny > Bunn), this is the team i have ended up with and am looking to WC again in early jan.

    Bego - (Cerny)
    Rafael - Johnson - Caulker - Nelsen - (Marriappa)
    Fellaini - Michu - Santi(VC) - (Mata - Guthrie)
    RVP (C) - Suarez - Defoe

    TV: 106.3 ITB:0.0

Ive had a look at the xmas fixtures and am happy to play the above this week and then mata comes in for nelsen for the rest of the year. If caulker looks like getting rotated in 2 weeks due to BAE coming back in, I will simply go for Hughes (FUL). None of my uber cheap subs will play.

    Any comments would be apprecited.

    Bless

Almost the exact same team as me, but i have Silva not Santi, Enrique not Johnson, and Cameron not Caulker. The rest is almost identical (starters at least).

I know you say your cheapies wont play, but its a busy xmas period, no way of predicting who will get knocks or rested. Guthrie is a complete waste of a spot in your squad. I'd downgrade Caulker to maybe Shorey and upgrade Guth to Puncheon. He's not much more cash and will give you a decent run for your money when he has to play

Carny, Guthrie and Marriappa shouldn't be anywhere near your squad as you will need all your 15 players to be playing regularly as rotation will occur.

i agree they shouldnt be, but its the only way i could shoehorn suarez in. My previous version had rooney, sterling, bassong, bunn and cameron, which would probably outscore the current team but only for this week. My front 8 is solid and therefore guthrie is simply taking up that slot for 4 weeks, dont forget i have 4 FTs before the new WC is available and i dont think rotation will be that big an issue as the team i have lined up during boxing day will be slightly different.

Anyway thanks for the comments, i will take them on board and see what else i can come up with but im happy with the first XI and dont mind nelsen or marriapa coming in for a 1 or 2 pointer, my defence has been quite poor all year and its the area i have used up most transfers.

Ok guys with all these injuries I'm now stumped as to what to do. It seems I should put the Ba -> Suarez idea on hold and deal with my injury list.

    Begovic(EVE)

    Cameron(EVE), *Caulker*(SWA), *Enrique*(AVL)

    Michu(tot), Fellaini(sto), *Bale*(SWA), *Walcott*(rdg)

    RVPc(SUN), Berbatov(qpr), Ba(mci)

    Subs: *Sterling*(AVL), Shorey(ARS), Davies(tot), Foster(WHU)

It looks as if my only midfielders available will be Fellaini and Michu and each are away to tough opponents. There's also a possibility of Enrique(Inj) and Caulker(BAE) missing a game too so I could end up with only 9 players this week.

If I could please get some advice on what to do with this mess that would be much appreciated, cheers

I really don't rate Valencia or Sagna but I do rate Rafael quite highly. Could he be an option? Considering selling Cameron with Stoke's fixtures stiffening up I may not want to double up. If thats the case then I'd back Everton to score and also bench Begovic to Foster.

After all that though all I would have achieved is subbing a certain starter for another certain starter, doesn't solve my problem really. Whats frustrating is that most of the doubts will almost certainly be available for next week.

Walcott is seriously close to leaving my team. I'm thinking I'd prefer Nolan over both Silva and Caz though. I prefer raw goal threat over assist potential (Theres a real lack of results for the creative player these days)

Okay, the best way of dealing with a few team problems is to identify what needs to be prioritised. We know that Mids and Fwds score more than defs and gks, so lets start there.

You have Man U cover, Ba remains in good form and Berbs is due a notch, so leave them three (Suarez is too unreliable to recommend to anyone).

The midpark: personally, the stand out trade here is Wal->Caz. Leave Bale in if he is due back next week and play 4 mids.

Play 3 defs: Cam; start Enq; start Caulk; have Shorey first def sub.

You should have 11 players with the Caz sub bare minimum. Good luck!

Yep, so basically leave as is but trade out Walcott. What are your thoughts on Nolan over Caz? or even Wilshire(seems to offer more potential than Caz these days)

          Wilshere? Not really FF material.

Caz has better fixtures than Nolan and plays in a better team imo.

Tough one, but i'd actually go for Stoke, just. You'd need Oceans 11 to get through that defence at home, and as good as Everton's 11 are, they're not Oceans 11.

I often wonder where my bullshyt comes from.

    Current team
    Bunn
    Clark, Enrique, Simpson, Gorkks, Gibbs
    Sterling, Bale, puncheon, michu, cazorla
    aguero, rvp, surez

This week I may bee out of 5 players - Enrique,Gorkks, Sterling, Bale and Puncheon - Bale and Puncheon definitely not starting. I already transferred out Sessegnon for Michu - mainly for money so that I may transfer Mata in for him nextweek. I still have 1 freebie. I honestly believe Enrique and sterling wont start and if they do get in, will produce 1 pt each tops. Many dont believe the bib theory but with downing and cole in orange bibs, skrtl agger johnson shelvey also in orange bibs, carra and wisdom and sterling in green - i think back 4 will be johnson skrtl agger downing and front 3 suarez shelvey cole.

Anyway, that leaves me with a big dilema. I can use pts to make up for 4 likely non starters or just maybee do a Nastasic for Enrique freebie and ride the rest. That way even though I play crap defenders, they are all hedged with my offensive players. Aguero v simpson, Suarez v Clark, Cazorla v Gorkks,. Or I can Waste 4 or 8 Pts with minimum drawdown by bringing in lets say jonas olsson or sagna for simpson and still have enough for mata next week. Any thoughts?

I'm in a similar situation. I'm going to hold out on Sterling and Enrique and hope at least one of them plays. You are probably best transfering out someone who will definitely not play like Gorkks. Because if you transfer out Enrique and he then plays then you will be missing out on a probable CS plus attacking potential.

I'd do Gorkks to Shorey and then keep your fingers crossed

problem is gorkks to anyone and it kills my possibility of bringing in mata next week without a hit, and so Im back to square 1. If I do something this week that will cause me to take a hit next week, then I may as well see if I can at least break even on the points this week as next week Enrique, Simpson and Gibbs should be a good back 3 so to use 4 pts next week would be a waste. Also with Morrison injured and reading poor defensive showing, I think Gorkks still has a good shot at starting.

Am in a lot of problems this week with injuries.
Mata & Puncheon are out and I have slight doubts over Enrique, McCartney and Sterling. Plus Cuellar has Man Utd away so will almost certainly get 1pt. Plus Caulker & Nasty might be rested. What to do?

    Bego - (Tremmel)
    Caulker - Nasty - Enrique - McCart
    Michu - Felliani - Sterling
    RVP(c)- Suarez(vc)- Berba
    Bench: Cuellar, Mata, Puncheon

    1FT & 3.0m in the bank

    I'm thinking:
    a) Cuellar & Berba > Gibbs & Defoe (-4pts)
    b) Cuellar > Gibbs
    c) Cuellar > Shorey (Can get Bale next week)
    d) Save transfer and pray for sunshine
    e) Any other suggestions?

      Hey mate

Of those options I think Cuellar to Shorey this week is good especially if it means getting Bale next week. Berbs fixtures are good and he's due surely? Don't think it's worth taking him out for -4pts. I presume you'll then just bench Puncheon each week and play Nasty & Enrique with one of Shorey / McCartney / Caulker depending on fixtures? Looks like a good side...

              Same here...

Demel/Garrido/Nelsen with Cuellar/Gorkks on the pine.

I can't be bothered at this stage, my ML leader has taken second -4pt hit in 2 weeks so lead down to 63pts. I'm not taking hits at the moment, might need them over Xmas/new year. Also want to see what he did first.

Also, Pardew mentioned he wants to attack citeh. That could mean a goal fest, so I'm getting Silva for now with an option of maybe getting in Kun next week for a hit for Fletcher.
