Since Harry Redknapp acquired Rafael Van der Vaart from Real Madrid on the last day of the August transfer window, there has been a nagging doubt in the back of many a Fantasy Manager’s mind regarding a certain Tottenham-owned Welsh wing wonder. Opinion is pretty much split as to whether Spurs’ multitude of creative midfield options means Gareth Bale will predominantly take his place in the starting XI as a full-back or a flying winger.

Owned by an incredible 50% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses, Bale is the most popular player in the game, thanks, in part, to his performances in the latter stages of last season and a relatively cheap starting price this time round.

Redknapp has always stated he sees Bale’s long term future as a full-back and the young Welshman definitely offers Spurs more dynamism and creativity from deep than Benoit Assou-Ekotto. So far this league season, Bale has played three full games in midfield, two in defence, and one -against Wigan- where he started in midfield before moving back in the second-half.

So the key question is, how does the shift in position affect Bale’s performance and Fantasy potential? Let’s delve into the the Members’ Opta stats for further analysis.

No way. You're gambling too much with a low chance of actually getting a return.

Guys, I need help!!! (advice, not the professional kind!) I cant decide on my best XI for this GW, please help! Currently I'm going for:

    Hart
    Dann Hangeland Jones Richards Alex
    Nani Gerrard Malouda
    Berbatov Tevez

    Subs: Stockdale Albrighton Nolan Carroll

Normally I'd subtley pick my mini-league rivals brains but 'coz I'm top, they're trying to pick mine on their teams! Who should I bench? Damn this is the first time this season that I can't be confident on picking my best / most logical XI

Also, with Torres a slight doubt to start, Gerrard is the most logical armband selection, but I've got a feeling Malouda will keep up his form of IMO potentially being the new FPL Ronaldo. My hunches have paid off big time the last 2 Gw, any reason to change that pattern?

Tevez is clear in the capn's poll but CHS could easily put 2/3 past ARS and Malouda involved in the points. You have no Drogba-he would be my pick from CHS.

Should I get Berba for Chamakh which allows me Nani next week? Tevez stops that move.

          See below.....I did Drogs>Tevez (I'm a UTD fan too!)

I'd deffo do Chamcrap>Tevez instead of Berba....the little Argie's forthcoming games just smell of FPL heaven.....and thats before I think that hes (C) and near enough guaranteed to start, can smack a FK or two, AND on pens!

No Roonay, Giggs, Scholes = Man Utd Squeaky-bum 1-0 victories!

TBH, if I had your team, and i have most of your mids & atk, I'd only do Gerrard>Fabs, Chamcrap>Tevez & Bramble>anyone who has 2 functioning legs lol

Fabs just went down, and Gerrard will go up again possibly by 0.3 t up so you could be +0.3m in that sense. Would still leave you with 3.2m to upgrade your defence for more likely goals, cs & baps

Samba, Boateng (When fit, should be after the international break) & possibly Jask>Hart would give you a cracking team with a solid bench

There's becoming an ever-increasing list of desirables: Nani, Berba, Tevez, Samba, Salcido, Mummy and when fit again, Fabs. Thought it might be worth upgrading during the INT break.

Not sure abt Hart as he'sa little too expensive for a gk.

2 goals conceded in 7 games which included 3 clean sheets against Spurs (A) Liverpool (H) and Chelsea (H). His fixtures are tasty, with only Arse (A) where you wouldn't be surprised if he didn't keep a clean sheet.

The lad is potentially the best in the world, and England's No.1 for the next decade.

Just been reading Lawro's predictions for this week - incidentally he got one result and no perfect scores last week. So you can really see why I feel the need to pick his brain, tap of footballing wisdom that it is before I make any hasty bets on Paddy.
What stand out this week is his prediction concerning the Birmingham v Everton fixture. Yes, Lawro's outdone himself this time by claiming an Everton 2-0 victory. His basis you ask? Well obviously because it would be ironic since it's a year since Birmingham lost at home in the league.
    Simply brilliant that man is.

If I was a bookie, Lawro would be on my radar for VIP treatment!

I'm a sucker for stats being mentioned, then broken / not happening / not continuing etc e.g. I normally select my team for the next GW once the deadline for the current week has passed. I had Drogba as (C) due to his historical raping of the Arse. Cue tabloid & FFS predictions of the same, so I did Drogs>Tevez,!

I think it will be a huge differential, as Drogs' Arse at home then Villa away wont reap anywhere near Tevez's Newc home & BPool away. Crazy? Or cunning?

No idea what that second sentence said mate but seriously?! Citing irony as a reason behind the man's prediction is just mind boggleing, particularly given that he's supposed to be a..dare I say it.. expert. Someone here last week suggested BBC instead hire a monkey throwing darts at Home Win, Away Win and Draw signs. I'm pretty sure the monkey would outscore the ironic predictions.

(Not saying Everton won't win, 2 decent teams so it could go either way but for the love of God hire the monkey)

Basically, to cut a long story short, I used to manage a Bookies a few years ago.

One of the betting tips I learned was to bet against the streak or the hype so to speak.

          Current examples / tips:

All week I've heard about Drogba's excellent record against the Arse. I predict he gets 1 or 2 points

Rooney hasn't scores a PL goal from open play since March. When he finally scores one, He will score something silly like 8 in 6 games

Over the last week or two we've heard about B'Ham's 12 month unbeaten home record. Cue Everton scoring their 1st win of the season at St Andrews on Saturday

Sorry if I wasn't clear before, hopefully this makes sense!

Birmingham's home record was constantly boasted last season as well, so if you'd started betting against their streak after 6 months you'd be well and trully screwed.

Yep, but last season it was 'B'Ham are solid at home'.

The last week or two it's been 'B'Ham are unbeaten at home for a year'

Quoting particular stats from my experience has been very, very profitable in betting terms. trust me, try it and you'll see!

Make a note of random stats being quoted like 'scored in each of the last 6 games', check the odds, and track how much you would've won or lost if you put £1 on each one.

After a while, you will actually start to place a bet against the trend

I was watching an old Man U game on YouTube the other day, (Spurs 3 - 5 Man U, 2001), and I saw Laurent Blanc and realised he looks a bit like Boselli. The only reason I knew they were different is that Blanc scored, something I have never seen Boselli do.

I'm half-expecting the same this week with Tevez(c). I was the only person of my rivals captaining an Arsenal player last week, so it was pretty frustrating. Given the way I'm expecting people to go with their captains this week, my 'sod's law' prediction is Tevez doing nothing and Drogba getting a hat trick. Here's hoping though.

they were dismal, and should have lost. 2 utrect efforts off the line, and reina made 3/4 very good saves. torres had at least4 clear cut chances, and absolutely wellied all three miles away from the goal. was straight in on the keeper, hit it right at him.

havin watched i, i aint touching liverpool plyrs. PLUS, with the struggling for a left back and mabye playing some 17 year old if kelly aint fit, blackpool might go one up. You know what that means- self doubt, fans booing, forcing the play, blackpool getting more encouragement...disaster for liverpool. Massive chance it happens.

You stil confident on torres? 🙂

I used to think like that so many times for Liverpool last season. They never kick start at all and has been poor. Don't think they will be any different at least what I am seeing so far from them as a team.

I'd go with Robinson in Goal as West Brom are pretty attacking so fansy them to get a goal.. Blackburn have a better chance of a clean sheet. Captain its either Tevez or Torres.... I'd go with Torres... hes due a goal or two. Kuyts back so will get more support and more chances. Blackpool struggle against pace.

It's not strange at all - he's rubbish!

I would points hit him out, particularly as it will probably only be a 2 point hit if it allows you to field an eleventh player.

he may be rubbish but he was a regular so scored clean sheet points as well as the odd goal... so even though hes rubbish in real life hes a decent FF pointscorer at 4.5... Think I'll do 4 transfers this week... get rid of Gallas and Konchesky, Carroll and someone else to get in Carr/Jara/Tevez and kuyt.

Yes, but being rubbish in real life IS relevant to FPL, as in real life, the manager sees a player playing crap, he hauls him out of the team as the manager is paid to get results for the club he's at. If he hauls the player out, that player does not score fantasy points. Therefore, fantasy and real life are still inter-related.

I'm being a bit harsh in saying that he's rubbish, there are far worse centre-backs, but it doesn't bode well that when Faye is playing CB with Shawcross, Pulis disrupts the partnership to shoehorn Huth in. Why not rest Huth if Faye was doing well? No cleanies for Stoke yet are the end product of BOTH Faye and Shawcross not playing that well at the moment. Whether Pulis dropped Faye or Shawcross is much of a muchness really.

I meant why drop Faye if he was doing well enough to keep his place. Who knows, maybe Pulis had Shawcross in his Fantasy team so used that as a deciding factor. 😉

Hodgson doesn't really do "big" wins. In fact I am not positive they will even beat the tangarines this weekend. Despite B'pol suffering heavy losses to Arsenal and Chelsea I think they could really push Pool all the way here. Pool played a full strength team at utrecht just 24 hours ago, with only Gerrard rested. Last time they won by more than one was in April at home to Burnley.

some choice words i came across

Yep, agree with that. They were away to Burnley but your point still stands in that Liverpool unfortunately are an average team nowadays and we can't just expect big results from them just because of their history.

      Liverpool 1 - 0 West Brom, Liverpool 2 - 2 Sunderland; that shows their current level. 🙁

I think if Chamakh played for someone like stoke or bolton, who put loads of crosses in, he'd score 15 - 20 a season, but Arsenal don't really put crosses in. They prefer the slipped ball through, or passing it through the defence. Great to watch, unless you're a Chamakh owner!

Thanks, that's what I thought. Now I'm p*ssed off that I didn't do it when Tevez was 10.4...

Chamakh has 25 points in 6 weeks...pretty poor for an ARS striker...you could Capt Tevez and possibly get 25 from him in one 2 goal game

Is Richards definitely ruled out of the weekend game?

If you look above, some guy posted that Richards was definitely out according to the BBC. I checked the site though and couldn't see anything about it.

Goodnight all - my body clock is all over the place. Transatlantic travel is such a bummer for that.
Got to have a clear head for the final pre-deadline decisions.

Is it worth trading Alex to Elmohamady or Alcaraz? Won't cost me anything, but I guess if I wait for a possible 0.1m rise by Alex, then I will gain that full rise.

I prefer Bosingwa when fit. He's cheaper than Alex too.

I'm currently playing Foster and Dann, but have been thinking about playing Hahnemann instead. Wigan-Wolves just seems like it could very well end up a goalless draw. Also considering getting Alcaraz for Alex (which I was going to do anyway to fit Fabregas in) hoping for a shutout. Thoughts?

Now you've gone and Dann it! You're putting doubts into my head about playing Foster over Hahnemann now!

I'm using the 'home player' logic, and the 'Everton ARE actually shit as they lost to Brentford in the League Cup' logic. 🙂

Back the home keeper. Alcarez/Alex similar chance of shutout, save the transfer for next week

True, I'll save the transfer for after the international matches. Still, Wigan's goalscoring record is pretty abysmal. Gonna take me a while to make up my mind on this one, I think.

Speaking of Fabregas - how come he dropped in price but hasn't appeared on the TotalFPL top 20 % drop list? (I don't mind him dropping because it will be easier to get him in the next couple of weeks)

there was a confusion over whether he was protected or not they thought he was, turns out he actually wasn't.

Guys – who to sign this week got 2 free transfers?

    Foster (Carson)
    Alex, Faye, Stam, (Foley, Konchesky)
Malouda, A Johnson, Bale, Arshavin (Barton)
    Drogba, Carroll, Chamakh

It looks like the popular trades would involve one or two of Chamakh (has just gone down in price), Carroll, Bale, Arshavin and A.Johnson. But some of the possible ins have increased in price (eg Tevez, Nani, VdV).
