Fixture Analysis – Rotation Pairs – West Ham and Southampton

Wednesday’s announcement of the 2013/14 Premier League fixture list has already given Fantasy managers plenty to ponder. Having rolled out our guide to the principles of rotation on Thursday, our attentions now turn to some of the most favourable pairings in accordance with the season’s schedule – to start things off, we take a look at the potential offered by West Ham and Southampton.

The Fixtures

The Hammers and Saints’ respective schedules complement each other perfectly, offering a home/away rotation pattern for all 38 Gameweeks across the upcoming campaign. Significantly, both sides have been handed strong schedules in front of their own fans over the opening few months – alternating in accordance with home fixture, you would face only three of last term’s top six in the opening 14 Gameweeks in a run that would read (CAR, SUN, STO, WHM, EVE, CPL, SWA, MCI, FUL, AVL, HUL, CHE, FUL, AVL).

Indeed, the West Ham/Southampton rotation pairing hosts one of the previous season’s top six sides just six times over the first half of the campaign – on one of these occasions, where West Ham host Arsenal in Gameweek 18, Mauricio Pochettino’s side travel to Cardiff and could take the place of our Hammers assets. In terms of fixture difficulty, then, that’s 14 home matches with a shade of blue on our tickers, plus one favourable away match from the opening 19 fixtures – an eye-catching partnership which will surely be utilised by many.

Long-term, the schedule does tighten up from Gameweek 31, though. The partnership would host United twice, in addition to home clashes with Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham over the final eight matches – something to consider when planning for the final few months, then.

Defence

West Ham
For the Hammers, the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen, Joey O’Brien and new boy Razvan Rat look the main protagonists. While Allardyce has snapped up new keeper Adrian from Real Betis, the Fin is still expected to remain as first-choice but his appeal across the Fantasy games is price-dependant. Although he registered 11 clean sheets last term, Jaaskelainen’s propensity for picking up save points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) helped accrue 144 points, joint-second for keepers. Starting last term at 4.5, he was a real budget favourite – a hike to 5.0 would be acceptable to most but 5.5 is likely to severely dent his prospects.

Thanks to a starting price of 4.0 and 123 point haul, O’Brien was the best value FPL defender of 2012/13 and a price rise is also on the cards here, with 5.0 the likely result. With Rat set to take his place on the left, O’Brien should vie with Guy Demel for game time on the right – his attacking potential certainly offers more than the Ivorian and could see him knock the site favourite down the Hammers’ pecking order.

From a Fantasy perspective, West Ham were a little difficult to predict when it came to clean sheets. Only six of last term’s 11 arrived in front of their own fans, though given that one of those arrived against City, they clearly are capable of nullifying any side at home – on the road, a Gameweek 32 goalless draw at Liverpool was their most impressive backline performance.

Southampton
Having conceded 60 goals over the previous season, the Saints’ defensive assets will surely remain in the budget bracket. Analysing their results a little closer, though, there’s reason for optimism at St Mary’s – as the players became accustomed to Mauricio Pochettino’s high pressing game towards the end of last term, they shipped just nine goals in the last 10 fixtures. The Argentine guided his side to four clean sheets in 16 matches, though after a goalless home draw with Everton on his debut at the helm, Pochettino’s defensive record was more impressive on the road, with just two goals conceded in the last five away matches.

The installation of new boy Dejan Lovren will add further stability to the Southampton backline, though there’s a fear that the Croatian’s big-money move could convince some Fantasy games to price him higher than his team mates. In all likelihood, though, a cost of 4.5 seems realistic but with Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw pushing on from the full-back areas, Lovren’s appeal may be somewhat diminished. Clyne will be hoping to improve upon last term’s goal and three assists, while Shaw now seems nailed-on at left-back ahead of Danny Fox and may be set to step up after establishing himself as a regular.

Between the sticks, Artur Boruc seems to be Pochettino’s preferred choice, starting all but one of Southampton’s matches since the dismissal of Nigel Adkins last January – again, a 4.5 price looks likely but if Jaaskelainen comes in at 5.5, may are likely to baulk at the idea of spending 10.0 for a pair of keepers.

Attacking Options

The Main Men
Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan are likely to remain the Hammers’ chief goal threats but with a mere 11 strikes away from home all season, West Ham were the poorest of any side on their travels. Trips to Newcastle, Southampton and Hull in the opening six offer Allardyce’s side the chance to remedy their abysmal form on the road but with both likely to come in around the 7.5 to 8.0 mark, they’ll be a little too pricey to bench. Carroll’s home form towards the end of the season offers plenty promise, though; he produced attacking returns in six of the last seven in front of his own fans, racking up four goals and four assists in the process.

As mentioned in yesterday’s article, Rickie Lambert produced 98 points away from home compared to 89 at home, scoring on the road against the likes of City and Chelsea – despite climbing off the bench in both games. Considering he finished last season as the third highest scoring forward in FPL, a significant price hike looks on the cards – starting last term at 6.0, a jump to 8.5 or even 9.0 looks likely. The schedule still remains in his favour, though, and with trips to West Brom, Norwich and Stoke in his opening 10 fixtures, Lambert – with spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces – could still prove a canny acquisition.

Mid-Price and Budget Targets
In terms of potential rotation targets, Matt Jarvis could be an option for the Hammers. Subject of a recent Sleeper article, the Hammers winger created chances aplenty last season without being rewarded – a drop to 5.5 would heighten his appeal in light of Nolan’s imminent hike, though spot-kick taker Mark Noble is unlikely to rise beyond last term’s initial 5.0 and could be utilised as a cheap fifth midfielder.

Depending on budget, Gaston Ramirez and Adam Lallana could prove a viable midfield partner for either of those two – both began last term priced at 6.0 but, similar to Jarvis, there’s hope they may dip in price after disappointing seasons. Up front, Jay Rodriguez’s four goals and six assists in 14 starts under Pochettino suggest he could come to the fore this term and offer an alternative to Lambert up top; if he comes in around 6.0, the former Burnley man is another one to watch as a rotation option with a budget midfielder.

However, with the Saints currently courting names such as Roma’s Pablo Osvaldo, Celtic’s Victor Wanyama and ex-Chelsea winger Miroslav Stoch, Fantasy managers will be advised to keep their provisional plans flexible, whilst being mindful of the potential they offer in tandem with West Ham’s assets.

Any football stars you've met in real life?

The only international footballer I've met face-to-face is my one-time idol Diego Forlan. A couple of years back, he came to India to promote a football TV show in my city, and I somehow managed to get a pass to the press conference. I was 16 at that time, and it felt awesome meeting him, and I still have an autograph. :'D

Hardly any international friendlies happen in India, but the one I had a privilege of watching was the Venezuela V/S Argentina friendly in my city. Though the match 0-0, the aura of watching Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria, Carlos Tevez & Sergio Aguero in front of my eyes was surreal.

          Er...Northern Ireland 🙂

Met Big Pat at the maracycle in the 80s when my dad helped to organise it. Guy cycled from Dublin to Belfast, was off his bike 2 mins and was happy to shake my hand / tousle hair etc. Enormous hands although I think I was around 10-12 at the time.

And I can't be bothered typing the Bestie one in again but it was great, will dig out the old post if I can be bothered.

Met Jay Demerit when I actually had him in my FPL team.

Didn't meet them as such, but was on a flight with Solkjaer and the Utd youth team in 2009 - the da Silvas amongst them.

Saw Rio Ferdinand in McDonald's in Leicester Square just before the 2002 World Cup.

Saw Ray Parlour in a bar a couple of months back.

    With so many heavy hitters to get, everyone seems to have decided to go with a cheap defence. I've tried to work it out myself. Considering fixtures; I think my GK's/DEF's will come from;

CPL, NEW, WH, NOR, SHTN, HC, SLD.

Assuming I can get all these for 4.5 apart from Ruddy (NOR) who will probably be 5.0 + CPL & Hull will have starting 4.0 options. Which would leave me with 69.0 for mids and forwards.

I think it's safe to assume that Aguero, Higuain, Hazard, Bale and Mata will set me back 52.0 - 54.0.

    That's 15.0 - 17.0 left to get 2 mids and a forward and improve a defender if I want.

    Flawed Plan? Yes? No?

At the upper end of that Rodriguez and Jarvis to rotate should leave you at least 5m to plug a gap. Certainly no left over to upgrade defence but it should just be manageable.

With Fred, that means they now have 4 attacking midfielders: Fred, Wellington Nem, Alan Patrick and Mkhitaryan

So it is almost certainly to replace Mkhitaryan.

There are issues with Mkhitaryan, given that Shakhtar only own 50% of him. Interestingly fans of Armenia and Shakhtar are apparently planning a protest outside the FFA (Football Federation of Armenia) against the president who supposedly owns the other half of the rights.

So we seem to have the fans over there on the side of him signing for us, as well as aiming to get the president to resign, as he is a bit of douche

Yeah, I posted that very article on here earlier :), I wasn't overly confident of landing him like other Liverpool fans but now Shakhtar look resigned to losing him I think he will sign, but I think it will be later on in the transfer window, I predict it will take us until the later weeks of July early August to land Mkhitaryan and a new centre back 😀

        Exciting times!

One of the best World Cup games of all time. Well worth 10 minutes of your time.

By far the most entertaining Brazil team to never win the World Cup. Best WC finals hat-trick ever and some cracking goals too.

Socrates is simply a legend too, as is Zoff. This game is just brimming with talented players (with the exceptions of Cerezo and Serginho who was utter sh*te, a kind of Brazilian Heskey)

Love this game. This and the France v Germany semi-final (Schumacher v Battiston) are truly all time classics.

      +1. Agreed.

One of the best football films I own is The Boys from Brazil - it's their World Cup history from the beginning to 1986, when the film was released (but it's on DVD).

1982 team could be my favourite Brazil team. Loved 1970 as well though.

In light of JK's earlier post, what is the best/most creative FPL team name you've seen?

Was proud of my Chamakh my Bitch Up effort in 2010/2011, although it turned out there were a couple others who had that one too and probably more since.

As a Frenchboy, it was all very emotional. I can still see zidane jumping, flick the heads 90C then, granddad's jumps up and jumps from the balcony to his death! Screaming "Je suis le champion du monde"

Not sure of my first game, but I really started taking an interest around the end of 1977/8.

I still recall the 1978 Cup final like it was yesterday, the whole build up starting early in the morning on TV, watching the team coaches leave the hotels. I was convinced Liam Brady was going to rip Ipswich to shreds that day.

Told all my friends a school that Arsenal were going to win.

Even back then I showed early glimpses of my,ahem, 'legendary' football predicting abilities :S

This, in my opinion, is the greatest single performance by any English team in history.

I remember seeing the highlights of this game and thinking this was as close to perfection as you will ever get. This Liverpool team blew me away that day. And it wasn't like they were playing a bunch of chumps either.

Again, this is seriously worth 8 minutes of your time today if just for Barnes' Taarabt like assist for the 4th goal.

Lets look at some factors, Chelsea's midfield is superior to Utds in an attacking sense as things stand. Rooney as an out an out striker is a completely differant animal imo, that to me is his true position. Will RVP be able to repeat his returns of last season under Moyes this campaign, I am far from certain. The supply Rooney would get from Mata, Hazard etc would create so many chances for him. Plus starts with a dgw. Ain't that far fetched.

Rooney would suit Chelsea's system very well. I didn't appreciate the work Torres did bringing their attacking mids into the play until I saw how badly Chelsea played with Ba leading the line. Rooney is obviously better suited to that sort of play than Nando.

  28. Rotation Analysis: Home Advantage To Norwich

Was just looking at the clean sheet statistics for last season and I'm starting to wonder if we put too much stock into home/away rotation. 115 (58%) of CS came at home last season compared to 84 (42%) away. Looking at each team's stats the trend is fairly consistent in that most teams keep more CS at home than away but not many more.

The only notable exceptions are Liverpool (11 home CS, 5 away), Arsenal (5 home, 9 away) and Norwich (8 home, 2 away). The other exceptions are Wigan, Reading and Villa but nobody cares about from a CS standpoint.

Liverpool and Arsenal defenders are too expensive to consider for rotation and both teams keep enough CS to justify playing home/away every week aside from in the toughest fixtures.

Norwich really stand out from this as being great cheap options at home and very easy to bench away regardless of opponent. If Ruddy is 4.5m he is definitely one of my keepers for a home/away combo. As for the 5 man uber cheap defence, I think looking for a set that give a long run of fixtures against favourable opponents might be more important than worrying about home/away.

Liverpool clean sheets at home is really impressive. Hope they have a good option for 5m. I had GJ as my expensive defender alot last season and he did me well in terms of clean sheets, despite not scoring.

This doesnt even tell the whole Liverpool fpl story. The accuracy with which you could predict the liverpool matches was astounded, they either crushed weaker teams or bent over for better teams, no half measures. It was glorious.

Unless there's an injury or they buy someone from another PL team after FPL opens I can't see Liverpool having an option for 5m. I got Wisdom for 4.5m last season when it looked liked he was going to start regularly. Got a cleanie from him straight away, then he got injured and dropped...

Rotation requires a set of fixtures which could produce clean sheets. Home advantage, opponent, fitness, form, morale etc all come together to determine the chances of a CS.

At the moment, we have two options, judge rotation by pure home advantage, or judge rotation by pure team ability. Both methods have major flaws.

Finding teams that are defensively solid and rotate home/away can be gold for regular CS returns and money saved for elsewhere in the squad. Swansea/Newcastle were exceptional for this in 2011/12.

      great post mate.

I'd be on the 5 man uber defence were it not for that Chelsea DGW. But a GW2 Luiz to cheapie transfer could be on the cards

Right now my plan for defence

      Ruddy/Boruc
      Turner, Clyne. Figueroa, Ridgewell, Rat

Yeah, I'm looking at something along those lines, including the GW2 Luiz to a cheapie bit. Tommy's suggested 5 man defence the other day gave a great run of fixtures, though it contained Newcastle which I'm not too confident about at the moment.

Exp def I'd say jk. Turner 5m, ridge 5.5m, rat 5m, clyne 5.5m figs 4.5m. Thats a lot of money burned in def, too much for that calibre of player if you ask me.

Gk combo might be ok though.

If you go bale and rvp as I think I have seen you mention before this would only leave you with 40m or so for two strikers and 4 mids. Thats only just over 6.5m per spot which would be mighty tight imo

Norwich also have the advantage of being an attacking team, with Martin, Turner and Bassong all earning the right to call themselves goalscoring defenders.

Just the challenge of picking a good rotational pairing. Stoke give the perfect home/away cover, but there are some tricky gws. Spurs are a better fit for my money, but they'll be more pricey...
