Moving Target

Moving Target – Ahmed Elmohamady

After acquiring Curtis Davis from Birmingham earlier last week, Steve Bruce continued to strengthen his first-team squad by signing Ahmed Elmohamady from Sunderland on a three-year contract. The Egyptian arrives at the KC Stadium in a deal believed to be in the region of £2m and is reunited with the Tigers after a successful loan stint in the club’s promotion-winning 2012/13 campaign.

Having found himself out of favour under Martin O’Neill at the Stadium of Light, the 25-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirement in Paolo Di Canio’s summer overhaul of the Black Cats’ squad. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Elmohamady – who was voted the club’s Player of the Year for 2012/13 – was clearly thrilled with a move which should offer him plenty of game time in the season ahead:

“It feels great to be here permanently, especially after what happened here last season. It was a great year and I thoroughly enjoyed playing for this club. Everything about it was great – the players, the staff, the fans – and I am delighted to be here again. It’s going to be great to play in the Premier League again, especially with Hull City, and I am very much looking forward to the new season. Moving here was an easy decision to make. The fans are fantastic and it will be enjoyable to play in front of them in the Premier League.”

The History

Elmohamady’s career began as a 17-year-old in his native country with Ghazl El-Mahalla back in 2004. Starting out as a forward, he notched three times in seven matches before being snapped up by Egyptian outfit ENPPI in the summer of 2006 – utilised as a right wing-back, he popped up on European radars after producing 11 goals and 12 assists over 61 appearances for the club.

Despite interest from Germany, Belgium and Romania, Elmohamady made his way to Sunderland on a season-long loan in July 2010, having impressed then-manager Steve Bruce during a trial spell the previous year. After producing three assists over 36 appearances in his first season at the Stadium of Light, the Egyptian sealed a permanent deal but his game time ended with Bruce’s departure midway through the following campaign – having returned a goal and assist from 18 appearances, he was cast aside by incoming boss Martin O’Neill.

Reunited with Bruce last season, Elmohamady produced three goals and nine assists in 41 appearances as the Tigers finished second behind Cardiff in the race for promotion. Midway through the previous campaign, Bruce explained just how crucial the Egyptian is to his 3-5-2 system:

“With the way we play, he is a key player and makes the wing-back position look very easy. The ability to run up and down the wing is an art and the position suits him down to the ground. We’re delighted to have him back.”

On the international stage, Elmohamady has turned out for his country on 43 occasions, scoring twice, and has helped Egypt to the African Cup of Nations trophy in 2008 and 2010.

The Prospects

Fielded as a right wing-back for virtually all of the previous campaign, Elmohamady’s potential for the season ahead is likely to be determined by his classification across the Fantasy games. If he’s listed as a defender, the Egyptian’s appeal would be significantly boosted, with a budget-friendly price of around 4.5 anticipated in Fantasy Premier League (FPL); although the Tigers racked up 16 clean sheets in 2012/13, they are likely to struggle defensively in the top-flight, with Elmohamady’s attacking potential key to his prospects.

On the other hand, if – as perhaps anticipated – he comes in as a midfielder, his case would be far less persuasive. A price of around 5.0 could be expected in FPL and, while his game time is guaranteed under Bruce, he may struggle for our attentions if team mates such as Robbie Brady (four goals, 13 assists last year) or Robert Koren (nine goals, five assists) are similarly priced.

Furthermore, it was perhaps revealing that Bruce opted for a 4-4-1-1 in his side’s decisive league game against Cardiff – it may well be that the Tigers boss tries to tighten up in the top-flight and turn away from a three-man backline. Although Elmohamady retained his right wing berth for that game against the Bluebirds, both Brady and Koren offer options in “the hole” should Bruce opt for a lone striker system and with both sharing corners – in addition to Koren’s spot-kicks – there’d be little case for Elmohamady’s inclusion over either of the pair if he comes in as a midfielder.

In terms of fixtures, Bruce’s side have been handed four strong opening home games to kick off the new campaign. With Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham and Villa all rolling up to the KC by Gameweek 7, the Tigers are afforded a decent platform to get some points on the board early on – Elmohamady has the potential to benefit, then, though just how favourably we look upon the Egyptian relies firmly on where he’s placed when the player lists are rolled out later this month.

This season is set to be really intresting, I think the departure of SAF, the arival of Mourinho, City having a new boss, Liverpool and Spurs seem to be buying well might be stronger, Arsenal (assuming they land Higgy or rooney or both) will be strong - it feels wide open this year, for the first time in years........Naturally this should lead to a pretty intresting FPL season too.

      I agree, very interesting.
Plus if you look at the first six gameweeks you can see some very enticing fixtures for such sides as Hull, Norwich, West Ham, West Brom and Southampton.
Some of these outfits' home matches alternate with one another.
So are the likes of Rodriguez, Snodgrass, Carroll, Clyne, Rat, Martin the way to go?

Can you see any other treasures in these outfits?
Am seriously considering fielding quite a strong lineup consisting of midpriced players considering the heavy hitters are going to be so bloody heavy...

This season I am really hoping for more players to be consistent points scorers.

Last season was weird. Most had RVP, Suarez, Michu, Bale, Mata. Alot with Zab, sometimes Fellani and Santi. Add to that just a few different goal keepers many of my mates teams looked identical to mine.

Now of course this is to be expected, top points scorers get picked. What last season missed was also Silva/ Aguero/ Rooney/ / Toure/any other Spurs player who isnt Bale/ a Man U midfielder/ an Aresnal forward etc to also be scoring decent points so teams had a bit of variety.

Thats my hope for this year.

Looking for a few opinions and thoughts on the following:

    a) Best city defender to get considering all aspects, price, gametime etc.etc?
    b) Kolo Toure to come in at around 5 and slot straight into the the Liverpool defence?
    c) Hazard or Mata and why?

we won't be able to decide until price is released, but I assume Clichy will be the best value
hard to say, may get eased into first team
Mata, more involved, but we will see if the rumours of Jose having a bad relationship with mata is true or not

      a) Way too hard to say at this stage (especially the price aspect!) but if Lescott got himself back in favour he could be a bargain. That's a big 'if' though.

      b) At least 5.5, maybe 6 I'd have thought since the move will be taken into account. I may be being pessimistic though.

      c) Hazard - greater goal threat (Mata's stats look unsustainable long term), Mata may be unfavoured by Mourinho (could be nonsense but hey) and Hazard really looked to be finding his feet in the league last season.

A is difficult to say due to the combination of no prices and a new manager. But I suspect the best early option will be Kompany.

I expect Kolo will be about 5 but a non-starter. Liverpool have been strongly linked with Papadopolous. If they don't get him, I expect they'll get someone else. Kolo was signed as back up IMO.

Hazard. Wasn't a lot to choose between them last season but I felt Hazard finished the season stronger and has had a much better rest over the summer. It's also rumoured that Hazard will be favoured over Mata by Mourinho. When Lampard isn't on the pitch, Hazard is on pens and Lamps isn't getting any younger...

Mata outscored hazard by a lot in the run in. I know to my cost as I brought in hazard thinking he would be a differential and because he had two more efforts inside the box in the preceding games. Lesson here is stats can mess you up but they should be checked to back up your gut instinct

      a) Nastasic probably. Won't know much until we've seen preseason though.

      b) Can't see us not buying another established CB. Again wait for preseason though.

      c) Hazard. More direct than Mata and should improve in his second season, whereas I doubt Mata will. He's also more rested.

      a) We don't know who Pellegrini likes but the most affordable will probably be Nastasic again so pay attention to lineups in pre-season

      b) Unlikely to be £5.0m IMO. He'll be widely expected to be first choice and has a strong PL pedigree. £5.5m minimum, I'd say

      c) Hazard. More of a goalscorer and I think he'll be doing just that this year. Also, Mata will be knackered from the confed cup (as he was from Olympics at the start of last season)

      1) seems Kompany is favoured around these areas due to his security of starts under the old regime. We'll see what happens with the new manager.
      2) not convinced about Kolo. Agree with the others he's been brought in more as a back up and am expecting another signing that would be more nailed on.
      3) I was impressed by Hazard's overall performance last season and the fact he didn't slow down over the run in and finished strongly. Think he's an enormously talented player both in real football and in fantasy, where he's a real treasure.

      A) In my opinion, Richards is the best option at the moment because i don't think Pellegrini would start Clichy or Kolarov and Richards had a chance to leave already but seems to have been convinced to stay (i can only assume it's because he was promised game time, and maybe Zabaleta will start playing at left back and Richards on the right) so if no full back is signed, go for Richards.

      B) I'd expect him to be 5 or 5.5 but i don't think he's going to be a starter, i see Rodgers signing another CB because he doesn't seem to like Skrtel and Toure seems to be a squad player.

      C) I like Mata more in terms of fantasy potential and in general, but there are too many reports about Mourinho not wanting to keep Mata. However, i'm sure Mourinho and Mata will talk about it and i expect Mata to leave if he's told he won't be a starter so i can only assume that if Mata stays, he's been promised game time, and so Mata for me (unless he starts playing on the right wing, then thats another headache).

Sturrideg totally depends on Suarez's exit, but I reckon 8 if Suarez is still here at pricing, which is doable. Suarez has to go for Sturridge to be chosen though, we saw at the end of the season Sturridge was throwing his toys out and that'll happen again if he isn't 1st pick.

Coutinho is a tough one eh, 7.5 would be acceptable, maybe 8 if all last seasons big hitters go up lots. Everyone can see he's class.

Yeah you're right, those prices could make them hard to justify but with those fixtures we could come out the starting blocks at a sprint.

Liverpool can't have a worse preseason than last year that's for sure!
            Cheers Tommy

Perhaps if Reina stays both his and Mignolets prices will be reasonable, and people can get Liverpool coverage and a great differential relatively cheap. Pre-season will be interesting for us for sure.

Yeah, if Liverpool can start quick they could be pushing for the top 4 around Xmas with the fixture list being kind to them. Have you seen their xmas to new year schedule? 😯

I agree, no chance for a 5m tag for a Liverpool defender. Think Dagger, Enrique and Johnson will all come in at 6-6.5, maybe the higher of the two. The fourth defender doesn't seem to be nailed as of now. Kolo may come in at 5-5.5 but that's for an irregular player and you don't want to field irregular players in FPL.

As it stands only the last 10 hot topics are displayed, as you say, Jonty's community roundup collates quite a few (but not all) hot topics in one article. For now you'll have to bookmark your posts if you want to refer back to them, or if you can remember which articles they were on you can go and sort by sticky/rating.

Longer term there are plans to have a better hot topic storage area so these things are more accessible for longer.

If Reina leaves and Mignolet is £5.5m then I'll just get him and a non-player. Otherwise, a Ruddy-Boruc pairing works for me.

I don't see a problem with doubling up - those teams have been identified as good sources of cheap points. You don't get fewer points for them if you have more than one.

I like the double up option for Norwich/Hull. GK paring for 8.5 mil on top of the uber will give a lottery size budgets for your big hitters.

      Norwich/Hull rotation is;

EVE/NOR/SOT/CAR/AVL/WHM/AVL/eve/CAR/SUN/WHM/CPL/CPL till GW13. By then we will know who is this years Bego/Jussi

I thought there was a discussion on here that unless someone gets injured all the keepers from the promoted sides start at 4.5m?

Jussi was 4.5m i think. Federici?

The bookies don't think much of Higuain:

      http://www.arsenalnews.co.uk/little-confidence-that-higuain-can-follow-in-robin-van-persie-footsteps-at-arsenal/link/692147/

There was a post a few days ago looking at newcomers to the PL and what type of player is successful. Seems to be the more direct, powerful, aerial threat guys that do well, rather than the skilful twinkle-toes guys. Would I be right in thinking that Higuain is more of a twinkle-toes type?

I remember that thread about the best strikers. I did some tables in the members area looking at aerial threat and cross referencing it with shots on target etc.

The overall conclusion was that in the mid to budget price range the best bets were the aeriel threat guys, which makes sense as teams like West Ham and Stoke rely much more on set piece moves, whereas a team like Man Utd will have many more slick passes.

RVP emerged, as you'd imagine as a complete striker, with threat all over.

Giroud as well had very impressive stats as an aeriel threat, but not as a goal scorer. Perhaps that indicates that Arsenal's slick style of passing play is ill suited to an aeriel threat kinda player and better suited to a twinkle toer.

I think Higuain very broadly could be the anti-Suarez....he doesn't take as many shots, but his accuracy rate is phenomenal. I think he'd be a great fit for Arsenal...and Giroud would be a better fit for Stoke or West Ham (no offence to either of those sides..its just a style of play thing)

Exactly. For mid to bottom half teams set pieces are key so aeriel threat is important. They need to play to their strengths.

Key strikers I'm looking at based on their aeriel threat and the team's style of play are

              AVLBenteke
              WHUCarroll
              Whoever lead's Stoke's line
              Cornelius at Cardiff.
              Hull's front man
Palace's front man....just look at Murray last season in the championship...he was the third most prolific striker in Europe at one point. Obviously Murray is injured but whoever Palace sign will be a great cheap option.

Damn you Jonty, I was hoping to rule him out of my drafts 👿

Any chance of having a word with FPL to give us 4 strikers and an extra £10m?

Seriously though, why do you think the bookies don't rate him? His stats in La Liga are incredible, a full 33% more goals per game than Aguero.

Yep, a bit like the RMT tool taking into account likelihood of gametime as well as potential to score well if a player plays.

To be fair, looking at the markets once you get past RVP and Aguero noone is short odds.

Here's another looking at the complete striker. Once again showing how Giroud is clearly a beast in terms of aerial threat but ill suited to Arsenal's play.

            http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/2695/

I'm always nervous questioning bookies. But from what I've seen of Higuain, a lethally accurate front man, who is used to playing with top top players and good passers, that he on paper is an ideal fit for Arsenal.

It's called negotiating. Half the time the rumours are misdirection. They're talking to one club, but want to appear aloof and disinterested, because desperation is never appealing and they want to be able to demand the highest wages and fees they can.

This is why you can never trust transfer rumours.

Perhaps an indent the other way would help. Even under the old system, it still was an issue. Another solution is to continue the conversation with a reply to the comment above & getting indents again.

An indent the other way would just make you think it was a reply to an earlier comment.

Just bring back the grey reply button I say! And perhaps the number of replies being permanent.
