Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Surely he has to be cheaper than Carroll, though. NEW and WHM scored the same number of goals last year, but Carroll is the definite #1 striker for WHM (when he's healthy, I know). Is there really a guarantee than Remy would be an every game starter for NEW?

The fact that you're undecided on these options tells me you believe one of either Snodgrass or Mirrallas might possibly equal Coutinho's output and therefore be a much better value. If you're willing to make a bolder move, pick the one of B) whose opening fixtures look more appealing to you, partner him with Kim (who you're likely to leave on the bench anyway) and spend the extra cash to upgrade a striker or a defender.

If you're not feeling bold, I like A) with Kim on the bench unless auto-subbed.

Someone in an earlier comment said that whereas it'll take 30,000 people to buy RvP to make his price go up one notch, it would take 300,000 for him to fall to 13.9, because he has such high ownership.

Another comment then said that Lukaku will plummet in value before GW2. I can understand the rationale that more people will ditch him because of uncertainty of game time and the blank week.

    RvP has 36.7%.
    Lukaku has 22.2%.

In my opinion, though, Lukaku is still a viable opportunity for GW2. I'm ditching any Chelsea defense before the United match, but attackers are still pretty good in my book. I don't see that being a scoreless draw.

Decided once and for all I'm not going with RVP, just so many more options available without him.

    So, onto my latest effort:

    Migs
    Cole Ivanovic Collins
    Hazard(C) Coutinho Mirallas Nolan
    Benteke Giroud Dzeko

    Harper Shaw Kim Parr

1.5 in the bank to catch any early flyers. May look at downgrading one of the Chelsea defenders after GW1 and upgrading Dzeko to Aguero if he looks like the City attacker to own.

Anyone else wishing Gareth Bale would stay at Tottenham just because of how much fun that team would be to watch after all their new signings? And with Soldado garnering more defensive attention than Defoe and Adebayor could ever hope to draw, how many goals do you think Bale would top out at? Could he get 30 with the same form he showed last season?

Hi all! It's my first time posting here, just wanna say I'm really excited to be a part of this community. I've only stumbled across this website at the end of last season unfortunately. Also i can't wait for the season to start already! Anyways, enough of the rant. I'll jump straight into my train of thought.

Firstly, this is Arsenal's go to offensive formation at the beginning of last season.

    Wilshere - Arteta
    Cazorla
    Walcott - Giroud - Podolski

Towards the later part of the previous season, Wenger has shown hints that he may prefer to utilize Podolski as more of an impact sub rather than a week-in week-out starter. Imo, this might be the result of Podolski's increasing age, prompting Wenger to use him more carefully. As a result, Cazorla on multiple occasions was shifted to the left flank. Consequently, it leaves an empty spot in the 'hole' and both Wilshere and Rosicky have been placed to fill this empty position.

Now as we all know, Wenger has made Suarez his no. 1 target this summer. I'm personally a bit skeptical about the success probability of this particular transfer (it seems crazy if Liverpool would let their best player go directly to their league competitors). One thing that strikes me, however, is that Wenger's pursuit of Suarez might be a sign that he has plans of keeping Cazorla in the left flank, since Suarez's best position is arguably in the hole. Assuming this transfer fails, and Wenger's plans for both Cazorla and Podolski stays the same, this might open up a space for Wilshere to play in the famous no. 10 position.

I've seen a few people dismiss Wilshere as a fantasy prospect this season. Even though he's probably one of my favourite players, I have to agree that if he continues in the double-pivot alongside Arteta, he's not the best option when we have the likes of Snodgrass and Nolan in a similar price bracket. However, if indeed Wilshere can nail down a place in the 'hole', would you guys reconsider his prospects? Or do you guys think he's the case of "a good real life player, not so good fantasy wise"?

Narky point aside, Podolski is 28 (same age as Merts). Put into perspective Rosicky is 32 Arteta 31. Podolski's role as an impact sub was mainly due to his poor levels of fitness and his inability to play a full 90 mins.

No definitely that age thing is just a guess from me. But like you said, there is a particular reason, whatever it might be, that Wenger started using Pod as more of an impact sub. Do you think he will continue being that, or do you see him as a guaranteed starter this time around? The way I see it, Wenger has other options in Pod's case, and it might make Wilshere a better fantasy prospect consequently. With Verm injured, Mert is definitely first choice. Arteta is also a guaranteed starter, since he's easily one of Arsenal's best midfield player.

I'd say Wiltshere could be one for the watchlist, but unfortunately it's more wishful thinking because of his 6.5 pricetag.

Podolski may get a look in if there are injuries to key players (i.e Cazorla/Giroud) but otherwise his place is firmly on the bench.

Even if the Suarez deal doesn't come off, I'd say a player to fill that role will definitely be signed by 1st Sept

Thanks! I think I'll pass for now, but the membership thing is definitely something I would consider in the future. I really thought Wenger should've focused on getting Higuain instead. The thing that Arsenal really needs is a reliable, consistent goalscorer imo.

Abt Wilshere, is it solely because of his more withdrawn position? Or do you simply think he doesn't provide enough end product?

I feel like we're all grabbing the "best" guys, but we're not grabbing the "best guys for GW1."

How many of you are looking at GW2 and saying: "Yeah, I'm just going to WC GW2 and I'll be good."

Obviously, the Chelsea/AVL DGW is going to need some cover (and you can cover that however you see fit), but look at the rest of the fixtures.

Norwich are playing a now 3-4-3 Everton, meaning there should be a lot more opportunity for the likes of Snodgrass.
West Ham are playing newly promoted Cardiff, and they just beat Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.
West Brom play Southampton at home. Whether or not they tightened up at the end of the season, the Baggies were more than just Lukaku in front of goal.

Now, look at the first THREE GWs. Sunderland play Southampton GW2 and Palace GW3.
Even after Newcastle play City GW1, their schedule opens up with two winnable games at home in a row.

Everyone is extremely short sighted. Yes, form > fixture, and the likes of RVP, Coutinho, Hazard, Soldado, etc. will more than likely always be good value for your money. But you don't have to get every single heavy hitter straight out the gate GW1. I've been back and forth between template and somewhat template teams, but I need some fresh air.

Snodgrass and Nolan are going into my side. I think I'll even take a punt on Altidore because he was absolutely on fire at AZ, and had one helluva summer with the USMNT. Who's to say he can't put a few past Hull and Palace?

I guess what I'm trying to say is: look at the big picture guys. At the beginning of every season we freak out and always go for "the best players," without even considering that it's still a game week, and "the best players" aren't always "the best players this week."

I also have nolan and snodgrass to start the season and fell sunderland may have some hidden gems if they can prove to be a winning (or at least not shit) squad. not including any in my starting squad though. going with a expensive midfield an three some what punts at the 6.5-8.5 striker range

I did a GW2 Wildcard last year and regretted it for 37 weeks. DON'T DO IT FELLAS.

Considering a punt on Altidore as well, or even Giacinerri to start the season. They could be a much better side this year (couldn't well be worse I guess.)

Sorry but it terrible , far too much money sitting on the bench .
If you want a strong defence you better picking three really strong ones that will play almost every game , and two cheaper ones that rotate , spend the extra in attack

Welcome. The two defenders on your bench are both rotation risks, and besides that are too expensive. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to get someone not to tell you to downgrade three of your defenders to 5.0 or cheaper, but maybe that is your plan anyway after Chelsea's double game week.

      Mids could be decent..
      Keepers could be decent..

Basically get rid of Assou-Ekotto and Evans for two cheapies from WHM / CAR / SOT etc.
and then upgrade Long or Lambert to one of:

      Lukaku
      Dzeko
      Soldado
      Sturridge/Aspas
      etc.

    Template revisited

A few weeks ago i posted my template for expenditure on each position , thought it was time for a revisit.
It seems to me that people are concentrating too much on who they pick . At this stage it is more important to look at the balance of the team. I feel that with Bale probably leaving, many people are spending the extra money in defence , and are in danger of having a bottom heavy team.

Its been proven year after year that its better to spend money on the mids and strikers , it works .
Here is my template , which if followed makes it much easier structure your team

    Keepers

4.5 m 4.5m Basically no more than 9m spent on keepers

    Defence

    4 m 4 m 4.5 m 5m 6m Only thee to start each week (23.5m)

    Midfield

    12m 10m 7m 6.5m 4.5m This works well (40)

    Forwards

14m 8m 5.5 m (27.5m) This will probably allow any striker in top spot

It dosent matter if you distribute the money differently within each group. For example i may ignore Van Persie and go 9 9 9 on forwards , or something similar.

It is fairly important not to alter too much between the groups. There are no doubt other ways to do well , but this formula has allowed me to finish in the top 1000 the last three seasons in a row

No doubt many of you will know better 😀

    Thoughts

Interesting , all fairly similar so far . Must admit that with my structure its the defence that involves having to do the most research etc.
The Mids and forwards are easier .
We all tend to concentrate on the sexy playmakers etc , really its the cheap defenders we should all be concentrating on , they are the ones that will make a difference . Any idiot can choose Hazard etc, but uncovering a diamond 4.5 defender is where the skill comes in

Garrido (103) was the highest scoring 4.5m def last season. Then Collins(90).

No use spending to much time on it. After 3 weeks most will jump on the relevant 4.5m bandwagons and we should know who are the nailed on 4m defenders.

True , the good thing about the 4.0s is that they dont have to actually be good to benefit your team , its the extra firepower they allow that does that.
Most people expect too much from them , forgetting that they are helping their team in other ways.
Likewise , they think its great when their expensive defender keeps a clean sheet , but ignore the fact that the cheap forwards they are forced to buy only get two points most weeks

I quite like this idea, mine is almost similiar allthough I fear I may have fell into the "bottom heavy" trap as you mentioned... might need some more tinkering mine is currently

      GK 8.5 m
      DEF 26 m
      MID 39.5 m
      ATT 26 m

I have to have RVP in my tream I cant see any way around it, to me he is nailed on and if he replicates his form from last season he is a must have!

my DEF is currently Zab - Ivan - Mertesacker ( Parr - Brayford) who would you suggest guys that I downgrade and then where would you improve with the extra cash?

      My Team

      Mannone (Davis)
Zab - Ivan - Mertesacker (Parr - Brayford)
      Hazard - Wally - Coutinho - Snodgrass - Kim
      Dzeko - RVP (Moore)

So many decent attacking options for £9.0m and under that I haven't stretched my budget that far up front. Similarly, a lot of good choices in midfield but they cost quite a bit (Walcott 9.5, Hazard 9.5, Silva 9.0, Michu 9.0, Kim 5.0 currently). Good chance I will downgrade Cech to Mignolet (save £1.0m) and invest the money elsewhere - probably in attack.

I don't agree at all I'm afraid. I think you had a reasonable point till you mentioned that last bit about not making transfers between different groups.

You sighted an example from the forwards group where 9,9,9 is just as good as having 14, 8, 5.5. I simply cannot agree with this as it seems to conflict with your main point on balance. This is because you'd still have the same problem if you need RVP or any other expensive 11m+ forward. You'd need two transfers to get that expensive forward and you can do that just as easily by selling a midfielder and a forward instead of only selling two forwards.

You always disagree with my posts Ryan , i would expect nothing less
If you read it properly you will see the 999 scenario is only if i decide to IGNORE RVP
That has yet to be decided/

Dont get bogged down in the detail , im just giving a template that has worked for meits the distribution between def mid and forward thats important , how its spent within the group less so

Fair point I did misread that slightly. However I don't quite see the necessity in having to trade within a particular group? Especially when you have the ability to save a transfer so you can make two changes accross different groups for free.

No one is saying he will be. Prob only needs 2 x 45min in gw 1 to score well.

        Then he is gone.

Great, I found the definition http://www.optasportspro.com/fr/a-propos/blog-d%27optapro/posts/2012/optapro%27s-event-definitions.aspx but unfortunately I do not understand it.

Sess is the best of these imo followed by Ben Arfa and Other (who has shown form lately)

Over the season I reckon Ben Arfa (if not injured). Closely followed by A.Johnson/Sessegnon

I would go for one of the sunderland for the first GW though.

do you think AJ might outscore Sess first few gw, and as a differential? or Sess is just better

I think AJ will just outscore Sess for a couple of reasons.

          1) World Cup Season and think he'll be really wanting to prove he can get in England squad.

          2) With new sunderland striker Altidore, might take a while for them to link up so the wingers, giaccherini and AJ will provide more goals imo

I don't the you have to sell him straight away. Just have a reserve keeper who plays.
