Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

Steve Sidwell grabs Fulham’s only goal in a home draw with Spanish side Real Betis, as Adel Taarabt prepares to move to the Cottage on a season-long loan. Ravel Morrison bags a brace and Kevin Nolan is amongst the goals as West Ham hit back to see off Sporting Lisbon. Jose Mourinho hints at Chelsea rotation, Daniel Sturridge returns to full training for Liverpool, while Pablo Hernandez could be back in time for Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo this week:

Fulham 1 Real Betis 1
Martin Jol named three of his summer signings in the starting line-up for last night’s draw at Craven Cottage. Maarten Stekelenburg, Fernando Amorebieta and Derek Boateng got the nod in a side that contained Kieran Richardson at left-back and Bryan Ruiz and Ashkan Dejagah on the flanks, with Jol selecting Dimitar Berbatov as the more withdrawn forward behind Hugo Rodallega as a result of Ruiz’s move to the left wing. Ruiz supplied the assist for Steve Sidwell’s opener thanks to his corner-kick duties, though he was withdrawn later in the match as the Fulham boss made five alterations as the second period progressed – Rodallega had an effort disallowed but the hosts were unable to add to their goal haul and settled for a stalemate.

The main talking point occurred after the match as Jol confirmed Adel Taarabt was undergoing a medical with a view to a season-long loan deal.

“I was too late to sign him when he went to QPR and he did ever so well there. He was over a £10m player 12 months ago and hopefully he will show his potential here.”

Depending on further acquisitions, the Moroccan’s arrival may have a knock-on effect on the likes of Damien Duff – if a new forward arrives and Ruiz is shifted to the right, Taarabt looks likely to slot in on the opposite flank, given that Jol is clearly a fan. Certainly, the Fulham boss is hopeful on adding to his squad before the season gets underway:

“All I can say is we have several doors open. But the new Chairman is not here to burn his money; we have to find a healthy way to do our business and we will find the right players. I’m excited about the youngsters and if we can get some players to this Club then the future will be bright. I want to do better than last season.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 West Ham 3
Sam Allardyce shuffled his pack for the first of two games in the space of 24-hours last night. The Hammers boss handed Joey O’Brien and Matt Taylor the full-back roles, with Joe Cole and Matt Jarvis flanking Modibo Maiga up top and Ravel Morrison in midfield. Razvan Rat replaced Taylor on the left at half-time and his endeavours down the flank proved instrumental – a cross was flicked on by Maiga for Kevin Nolan to notch the visitors’ first before Rat teed up Morrison to fire the Hammers ahead. Rat also played a part in the third – his shot deflected to Cole, who supplied the assist for Morrison’s second of the match as Allardyce’s side won for the seventh time in eight pre-season encounters.

Former United man Morrison seems to have finally settled down and justified the hype heaped upon him earlier in his career – he has now notched five times over the summer, the Hammers top scorer, with Nolan next best with three goals to his name. After the match, assistant manager Neil McDonald spoke highly of Morrison’s upturn is performance:

“He has certainly grown up a touch. With all due respect, when he first came from Manchester United he thought he was the top kid and he was going to walk straight into our team and it certainly doesn’t work like that. We sent him away to get the experience at Birmingham and he’s certainly come back and he’s used that experience. He had some experience around him as well [in midfield] with Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble pulling and pushing him, as you’d expect. If we can get him on the ball in the final third then he can produce and he’s produced two goals on Monday. He missed his penalty at the end but that’s good experience for him. He’s come back in good shape, just like the rest of them.”

In Other News
Jose Mourinho has served notice of his intentions for the season ahead by hinting at the possibility of rotation amongst the Chelsea attacking midfielders. The Blues boss praised the recent displays of Victor Moses over the summer and with several high profile players vying for the three positions behind the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1, he admitted he was keen to ration out game time across the busy schedule, with the number of options on the left hand side particularly generous:

“Where can I can fit all the players in? I hope to play 60 matches. So we will use a rotation of players that’s for sure. Victor has been terrific, working very hard. In his position, we have Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle, and with Victor, we can change during a match and give new life to the team.”

Bearing in mind that Mourinho feels that Hazard, De Bruyne and Schurrle – along with Oscar – can play through the middle, Juan Mata certainly looks to have less competition for places on the right. The Spaniard has mainly featured in “the hole” over his two seasons at Stamford Bridge but with his manager admitting he prefers a left-footer on the right, his consistency of starts looks likely to remain strong.

Daniel Sturridge has given Fantasy managers plenty to mull over after returning to full training yesterday. Yet to feature in pre-season due to an ankle problem, there was some uncertainty over whether he would make the start of the season but, speaking to the club’s official website yesterday, Brendan Rodgers seemed pretty confident the January signing will be ready to face Stoke on Saturday August 17:

“Daniel had his first training session today with the team and I thought he looked very, very sharp. He’s worked very hard along with the medical guys who have done a great job with him. It’s a great testament to him he’s kept himself fit and it was just waiting for the right time to introduce him. It’s important he has another good week’s training and it was great to see him back today, because for me he can be one of the top strikers in the Premier League this season. He’s played no part in the pre-season so you put him in at the top end of the field with his pace, power and his quality and we are able to add something more to the group as well. So it all bodes well for us for the beginning of the season and sets us up nice and solid and exciting for the first game.”

With Luis Suarez suspended for the first six matches of the campaign, the stage is set for Sturridge to shine from the off. Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas have both caught the eye with three goals apiece during the summer and with Rodgers’ side winning all five of their matches so far, they are approaching the Potters clash in fine form. The Reds face just one of last term’s top six in the opening nine fixtures and with 10 goals and five FPL assists in just 14 appearances last term, Sturridge is the joint-fifth most popular forward in the FPL game, with almost 16% ownership thus far.

Pablo Hernandez is hopeful of a return to action in time for Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo on Thursday. The Spaniard missed the first leg against the Swedish side after picking up a groin problem in training but with the Swans racking up a 4-0 win, it’s uncertain whether Michael Laudrup will risk him. Hernandez has been one of the Welsh side’s star performers over the summer and scored four times in the first seven friendlies but with the season opener against United less than a fortnight away, he accepts Michael Laudrup may decide to keep him fresh for the showdown against the champions:

“While training, I felt a pain in my groin, but in less than a week I should be able to play again. It’s possible I could play in Malmo. The leg feels good, but I will have to train with the team before the game. It feels good now, but I have to be patient. I want to play, I think for me it is better to play in this game. My fitness is good, but it is more important to make sure I am 100 per cent over the injury. It will be good to play against Malmo, but I can wait for the next game against Manchester United. I was feeling good before the injury, I was concentrating on my work in the games. I know it’s a very important position for me and the team. It is always bad when you get an injury, but it’s not a serious injury and whether it’s against Malmo or Manchester United, I have to make sure that I’m fit.”

Bale leaving before GW1 and RVP breaking one of his glass ankles in the Community Shield would bust the joint wide open. Just think of all the beautifully well balanced teams!

Even as an Arsenal fan I wouldn't wish injury on RVP for the sake of the balance of my FPL team.

Also as an Arsenal I hope Bale does go, it suits in every way! 🙂

    The goalkeepres options:

There are mainly four options to goalkeepers IMO and I would like to review them all since I did some thinking and my conclusions might help someone:

Option one - the big hitter

In previous seasons, especially last season, there were long periods that having DDG or hart with a 4.0 keeper was more than enoug.
Two issues with that strategy now:
A - Both hart and DDG have new coaches - one, peregrini, with a more attacking nature, and the other, moyes, is yet to show his control over the team.
B - this strategy usually works better in the second half of the season, where the big teams get tighter in the back and more focused.

In summary - not a great option IMO.

Option two - the two cheapies
Valid strategy at early stages of the season, yet sadly no real power pair is available - some say boruc and Marshall or speroni, some will look at manone, yet no pairing really steps forwards with great fit and high confidence. To find great fits you need to upgrade one keeper to foster or form or krul and now it's already 9.5 - too much for the strategy.

Summary - can work moderately, especially if you try to squeeze Rvp and in need for money, yet not ideal.

Option two - the mignolet card.

Mignolet nailed on ness, general ability, combined with pools good defence and kind fixtures, make him an ideal candidate to be the main man in goal.
But, Who is the best cheap gk to be paired with migs?
    Glad you asked.
Looking at fixtures, migs can basically hold the line by himself between gw1 and gw17 if his understudy can take care of arsenal away (gw10) and tot away (gw16).
If you plan a wc before gw10, and really keen on money, maybe a 4.0 can work.
If you want someone who plays and works best on those two gws, lets look just at them in isolation, by looking at all possible 4.5 relevant gk options:

Boruc - stoke away and newc away - not good.
Speroni - WBA away and Chelsea away - not good
Manone - hull away and whm away - getting better but still away games and not nailed on
Marshall - Swansea home and WBA home - now that's more alike it - not easy teams but also not super strong and both at home. Problem is - its Marshall and his team is not a lock for cs in any game.

The answer is surprising - mcgregor (hull) has Sunderland at home and stoke at home - two teams that are not great offensively and not good away from home.
Maybe have brayford and parr instead of Chester if it burns to have two have to hull in the back line, but If you really plan to not deal with keepers for a long time this might be the answer.

To summarise - great option for 10.0

Option four - the cech express

The most promising Dgw in recent history, with a strong team playing twice at home against weak teams, is presenting a major issue - there are really only three players super nailed on - cech, cole and hazard. Cech is very expensive and also has a nightmare of fixtures after the Dgw - but if we have money to spare (no Rvp) we might find a neat solution.
    Boruc.
Cech has horrible fixtures in gw 2,3,4,6 - besides that its smooth sailing with great chances for points in the mood of hart or ddg from last year, especially with the special one back. Quite fortunately - boruc has great fixtures in exactly those gws.

To summarise - great option - but expensive.

    Hope it helps!

I'm actually going with one of your option 2s and going with two cheapies - Boruc + McGregor.

Saves me 1m which I'll need if I want to get RVP in at a later date.

        Remember Swans 2 years ago?

They were more solid first half of the season until teams started to work out their possession game.

Pool play the same style but with better quality players. They kept 16 CS last season, I'd back them to keep more this time around having had a year under BR and with the squad having been improved.

No disrespect to Pepe, but Migs is a quality keeper

Pepe suffered lapses at times last season, and a little the season before. It is yet to be seen how Migs copes with having less than a half of the work that he is used to but I genuinely believe that Pepe cost Liverpool 2-3 CS's last season and with a more settled back line and another season of BR under the belt that Liverpool will get 19-20 this season

Can always load up on a 4.5 GK and a 4m. Play the 4.5 and transfer him out when the fixtures stiffen for another 4.5.

      Not a popular strat though.

Id certainly not be suggesting changing keeper every few games, more like over a ten game period.

Saying that, usually a 4.5 comes to the fore who you just stick with, ala Begovic, Vorm, Jaask etc etc.

      Mignolet + 4.0m = 9.5m

If you have a spare 0.5m later on you may decide on a sub for GWs 10 and 16, but I would have no issue playing him in those fixtures.

Summary I wrote on Mig a couple days back:

      +1 for effort
      -1 for content
This is far too biased towards Mignolet and entirely misses the point that cheap goalkeepers do almost as well as expensive ones due to save points. A pair like Mannone and Boruc (with Boruc playing mostly) will easily match Mignolet + someone else, especially as its at least 0.5m cheaper.

Still working on my 4.5m GK analysis.

Thing is this season we don't have a Beg/Jaas combo at that price - it is the equivalent of trying to create such a rotation with Wigan, Reading, QPR and Southampton last season.

The Beg/Jaas combo now costs 11.0m - but the equivalents are now 5m and not 4.5m (GK's at mid-table clubs)

Take a look at the goalkeepers from last season who played every game. You'll see all there scores very close together even though at the time there were vast differences in price. Then go on FISO and follow their links to previous seasons and you'll see the same pattern played out every season. I'm not saying Mignolet won't outscore Boruc, I'm saying he won't outscore him by £1m, assuming the both play every minute - simply because the way the scoring is set up means that keepers at weaker teams have more chances to get save points and to save penalties.

You only need 20 points over the season to make it worth it.

I gather that Mignolet has a floor of 149 points (in my humble opinion I accept), Boruc last season got 126 points (if you multiply it out) or 120 points if you add up the 3 keepers.

That's at least 20 points, and I think there's massive upside in Mignolet.

Now if you add rotation to the mix you can get a different result I'm sure, and that's what I want to analyse at the 4.5 x2 level. As soon as you add a 5m GK to the mix I'd rather just go for the low decision option of Mignolet always.

Yes, that's 20 points if you play Boruc every week, except that you won't. Also of the seven goalkeepers who played every minute last season only 1 (Howard) failed to get within 10 points of 149, so it should be no problem for two rotating keepers to achieve that if you switch for the easier fixture. Trick is to not get to frustrated if the benched keeper gets a clean sheet when you made the 'right' decision. Play the percentages and it'll work out in the end.

This is good and summarized nicely, but there is one thing which is overlooked when picking Mignolet.

Liverpool overload. Liverpool have great fixtures, and some real standout players. Toure in particular is throwing a big spanner in a lot of teams. Imo, you've got to get Toure if he's 5.0 and nailed on for starts. There's no comparable pick at 5.0. If you pick him up, that means with Mignolet you only have 1 forward slot for a Liverpool player. Then you look at who you can pick from LPool - Coutinho, Sturridge, Aspas, Suarez, Gerrard. Whoops. All of a sudden, with Mignolet and Toure, you're now stuck with only one forward position and 5 potentially form players. If Toure wasn't such a complete steal, this wouldn't be an issue, but fact is, he is, and you've got to work around that.

Good points! I am however slightly reluctant to start with double up in defence before i see actual trends - rather spread over 6 teams and the adjust towards the defensively I press ice ones. Just my opinion of course.

Fair enough. Although if you look at it plainly.

Boruc + Toure vs Mignolet + Shaw.

The former should be at least comparable at 0.5m less. Boruc has save points to bank on too. So why not go with Boruc and Toure instead?

Assuming this was aimed at me.

That's a good option. But now you have to find someone to rotate with Boruc

Options are probably Newcastle and West Ham. So that leaves you still spending 9.5/10 on your GKs.

Comparatively you can spend 4.5m on defenders to rotate with Boruc

Don't need to rotate. I'll pick up Marshall. Their fixtures dovetail decently.

I started the season with Given + Vorm two years back. Everyone wanted a rotator with Given but I was the one laughing as Vorm became a must-have and shot up to 5.3m in price from 4.0.

Do you believe we'll have a Vorm, Begovic or Jaaskelainen out of the four 4.5 options this season though?

Specifically I guess, is Boruc that guy?

Our rotation options in defence just seem cheaper (Collins, Yanga, Turner etc)

            It's an option but
            - Rodgers might buy another cb
            - boruc might lose his place like last year

But I'm splitting hairs - valid option indeed

This is a pretty good point.

I wouldn't really want to double up on Liverpool's attack given how inconsistent they are, but it's definitely worth considering.

I would argue though that you'll get better value out of Mig/4 and someone like Coleman than you would out of another combination of 9.5 GKs and Toure.

Toure's a steal, but so is Mignolet - and there are more options at 5.0 in defense than at GK

          Who said anything about 9.5s?

9.0 is the way forward. Bank the 0.5m and use it elsewhere. We've done it every season.

Every season though we had 4.5 options in the middle of the table - we don't have that this year.

We're now forced to go for relegation fodder at 4.5m, not sure the rotation works out as well for us this season

Disagree. *Option 3 with Mignolet has to be done with a 4.0 for it to be truly effective otherwise there's too much money tied up in a second choice keeper who won't play for basically the first half of the season.

      Great write up. Thanks.

My question regarding GKs, and particularly the Mignolet choice:

How often has the preseason consensus #1 pick been right?

I'm going away from the 27%+crowd toward Boruc-Mannone, or Marshall-Mannone... still on the fence. Leaning toward Marshall as I like Cardiff's defensive line better. (The whole league has already seen Southampton's defense, and don't think this year will be as good as last.)

I have a front 8 of Nolan, Bale, Lallana, Snodgrass, Hazard, Giroud, Lukaku and Sturridge. Is it worth having all 8 of these, or downgrading somebody like Lallana for Thomas since I can only play 7 a week maximum? Would go towards either more in my back 4 or fund a move for RvP provided Bale leaves.

I really don't understand why you wouldn't pick three Chelsea players with HUL + AVL (!!). Especially considering that:

    1. You have two FTs before the blank.
    2. I took -8 and -12 hits in connection with the DGWs after Christmas last season and they all paid off (and the fixtures wasn't even as good as HUL + AVL).
    3. I was a rookie last season and only chose two Chelsea players for the DGW1, which made me start 1,000,000+ OR and that mistake probably cost me a top 100 finish (finished 425 OR).

Well there are many reasons unless you are planning on a very early WC. Mostly just that the starting option for half of the team are unknown and that is ignoring the Spain friendly, the new manager and the likely hood of extra rotation early in the season due to a lack of match fitness.

For me though you are predetermining how your free transfers are going to be used. Transfers are at an absolute premium at the start of the season as even if you are lucky and haven't made any bad picks and even luckier and don't pick up any injuries you are also losing flexibility to jump on bandwagons and gaining vital team value.

I believe that we are all going to have Hazard as captain and so beyond that you are hoping your defender gets both two full games and two clean sheets (which are less likely early in the system) and that your other attacking player get game time and at least a goal and an assist in the games combined. If you can tell me any player that is near guaranteed 8+ points then I will be all over it..........!

I genuinely think this team is the answer:

    Mannone - Boruc
    Zabaleta - Koscielny - Coleman - Toure - Whittaker
    Hazard - Oscar - Silva - Jarvis - (some 4.5)
Van Persie - Benteke - Maiga
0.5 in the bank for first transfer.

Hey, I have been doing a lot of tinkering like many of us, care to RMT?
    Mig (Davis)
    Terry, Collins, Murner (Brayford, Chester)
Hazard (C), Wally, Mirallas, Kim (Thomas)
    RVP, Lukaku (VC), Sturridge
    0,5 left in the bank.

My plan is to do Terry -> Zabs and Lukaku -> Bony or Remy within GW3 (so no hits taken). I keep the 0,5 to upgrade Sturridge to Soldado or Man City strikers if they are firing.
I strongly think Kim has what it takes to be a regular starter and not stay on my bench.

Lampard played 500 minutes less than Silva last season and got more points. I hope he gets his fitness sorted out in time for week one...
