West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

How many people feel loyalty to their job? Why should football be different? But you do expect people to behave with dignity, especially with these kinds of wages. Sadly that doesn't always happen...

So far, Bale is an interesting counter-point to Suarez. Even Ronaldo was dignified in respect to his public comments before his move to RM.

But dignity largely means either *not* doing 'bad' things or at least doing them behind closed doors. If it's the latter, it doesn't indicate any amount of loyalty.

The reality is a player is paid buy the club to provide a level of performance and poccess a level of ability at the stanard required y the club. Once he is unable to do this, he becomes surplus to requirements, it's the way it has to be. I've not sure fans react as you say they do, to the extent to are suggesting.

If anyone is interested I put together a small Excel spreadsheet to help visualize the fixtures your team is going to face once you've selected your team, which you enter on the first worksheet. I ranked the fixtures from 0 (hardest, greenest) to 10 (easiest, reddest), and sorted them two different ways: one (which I called 'absolute') that does not depend on which team is considered (so for example no matter which team you're thinking of, Liverpool away is going to be considered kind of a hard fixture), and one which, well does, so for example if you're looking at Man. City fixtures vs. Crystal Palace fixtures, Liverpool away is not going to be considered as hard a fixture for City as it would be for Palace. I called that one 'relative'.

So basically you enter your team on the first worksheet ('Team selection'), and after that you can visualize on the worksheets "team fixtures (abs)" and "team fixtures (rel)" what the fixtures will look like. I figured it could help some people... hopefully the link will work.

can you sort by offensive difficulty or defensive difficulty?

for example last year stoke would be a relatively difficult fixture for an attacker but a pretty easy fixture for a defender

likewise Villa would be difficult defensively but easy offensively

Hang on, let me find my paypal account... 😀

Probably, it's a good idea. But I guess it's subjective. By the way, you can change the fixture difficulties. The way they are right now is how I see them but I'm sure some people will disagree...

yeah but my point is how can u put fixture difficulty for a team like stoke or villa where they are weak in one sense but pretty strong in another sense? a general dificulty rating doesn't seem very helpful in that case

because i'd much rather have an attacker vs villa and a defender vs stoke than vice versa but if you do general difficulty ratings they could have the same rating....

Save it twice. Call one defensive planner and one attack planner. You can then modify the difficulty for each team accordingly in each spreadsheet.

Michael Turner is Murner. Pennant I picked because I don't like the rotation in the wingers we've signed, so didn't really want to pick Thomas. I reckon Silva could be vital at the start of the season when strikers are trying to prove their place.

Can understand Liverpool's reluctance to sell Suarez to Arsenal given they currently occupy their target spot of 4th, but to demand a world class player stays with a team that doesn't even play in any form of European football is unjust.
Any team has its key players but when a player is so clearly head and shoulders over the rest it's unfair to expect him to expect playing out his career in the company of inferior players.
They should reluctantly allow to leave to anyone besides Arsenal or Spurs as long as a price of £45-£50m is met

I believe part of Wenger's plan with even going after Suarez is to move the realistic target HIGHER than 4th. Which Suarez would clearly do.

I'm an Arsenal fan as well. He'll move the club up the table, but he'll eventually try to screw us over like he's doing to 'Pool. And he's second only to Terry in scumbaggery. I hope we don't get him, as well.

it's unjust? he's the one that signed the contract with them in the first place, and therefore has contractual obligations until his contract expires or he is sold. his team has no obligation to sell him and can chose to keep him until his contract runs down if they wish (a bit like the Lewa situation at Dortmund)

They have no obligation to sell but now Suarez has thrown his toys out the pram it's in their interest to sell. It's just about finding the right price and destination from Liverpool's point of view. Arsenal for £40m is neither of those things for them.

So if Liverpool were relegated then Suarez would still be obligated to stay? It's an extreme example but you cannot treat players like drones
When Ronaldo wanted to go to Real, United didn't need the money but it wasn't right to stand in his way given the players desire to leave and in his view make a step forward in his career.

Anyone think the West Ham Morrison may be worth MF bench fodder? Decent team, done pretty well in preseason, 4.5. Obvious neon-sign drawback that he's not a guaranteed starter, but it seems he could maybe get a run in the side...

I'd like to accentuate how good soldado is

He will be in the top 10 point scorers over the season, there is no doubt in my mind. He's a proper striker, he doesnt miss like others do, he bangs them in. Aguero had a similar track record before he came to england, defoe/ade are down the pecking order. 26m so he will play most of the season in a very decent team, if bale leaves he has to step up and he will.
So for 9.5m, you'd be a fool not to make space for him in your team.

(btw where are the bonus point rules for this season?)

I don't know about his preseason, but when a player is class, they don't need time to adjust. Giroud had to, because he wasn't world class. Soldado is miles better. Why didn't we bid for him ðŸ™

it'll still take him time to adjust. new league, different teammates, new manager, different tactics, new country, new lifestyle, etc.

even world class players don't adjust immeditely. and it's not just adjusting on the pitch you have to remember. it's adjusting to life off the pitch as well

I have two defenders who will play every game , and have come up with a cunning plan for the thiird spot

Collins Chester and Parr , one to play each week it gives

    GW1 Collins H Cardiff
    GW2 Chest H Norwich
    GW3 Collin H Stoke
    GW4 Ches H Cardiff
    GW5 Colli H Everton
    GW6 Ches H Wham
    GW7 Ches H Newastle
    GW8 Parr H Fulham

Cant be bothered looking further not too shabby considering the combined cost is only 12.5 , dont expect much from them , but they allow some great firepower further upfield

Can you not work something with norwich/sou, cardiff, hull rotation? Not sold on par and wham were jot very reliable with there cs last year with them coming home and away. Norwich the best def to do in rotation imo as they were beasts at home last year and muck away so at least they were pretty predictable.

I'd put more fire-power up front.

I was toying around with a RVP-less team and easily fit Benteke, Sturridge (or Giroud) and Soldado in with your midfield + Mirallas, all while keeping A. Cole, Toure, and 9.5m worth of keepers.

Not saying you need to get the above players, but rather you've got lots of options available.

I'm about unsure about Mirallas as well as finding himself in wife positions very often he is highly injury prone

No worries. Wasn't trying to persuade you to get specific players, but rather that investing money up front is beneficial.

I've read that Brazil have a match a few days before Chelsea's first match so he could be benched
I'm wary about Liverpools limited attacking threat which us the only reason making me ponder Sturridge - whom is prefer to Countinho for the same price

its versus switzerland isn't it? so it's not that far. Mourinho has hinted azcu,,,, torres and mata wont play the first game

So luiz will play either centre mid, or centre back with ivanovic playing right back. Mourinho will not rest the whole team.

Good side but no point in having 3.5 in the bank when it can be improved. Use the 3.5 for Soldado. Downgrade Kompany and get a 2nd keeper and upgrade Robbie. Get another defender for Toure cos Pool will conced att ime (hope it's seldom!) and your fkt with him and Mignolet in that case.

Disagree on Liverpool defensively. Rodgers at SWA and LIV has proved that his teams will commonly be involved in low-scoring matches
Will Soldado come straight in for GW1 with only 1 week training with the squad?

They'll conced with a new keeper and new CB no matter how good they are. Hopefully they'll keep plenty of CS too but no point asking for a doublehit against better teams.

I have become extremely partial towards two players after their pre season show; Giroud and Anelka. Although having both of them in the same team to start the season off with seems wrong for some reason.

    Currently on (Dzeko/Lukaku) - (Giroud/Sturridge) - Anelka

I don't think dzeko will play much. They signed 2 forwards. I would stay clear.

I was looking at short term actually. I plan to ship Dzeko to RVP by GW 4.

Teams with Anelka are usually supplemented by the presence of RVP. Maybe that's what feels so out of place.

Can't really go wrong with Giroud or Sturridge, but Dzeko and Lukaku are too risky.

TW - Im actually looking at a scenario where Bale actually stays, unlike all the RMTs on here. If he does; ill stick with him and wait and watch on Soldado. Got Theo already. If Bale leaves, Soldado is straight in.

DIETCOKE - I agree mate. Thing is, I've crafted this team with Bale in my midfield. Anelka becomes a great option in my front three for when I do Dzeko/Lukaku > RVP for GW 4. Thoughts?

With both Bale and RVP, you're kind of stuck with Anelka regardless. Not much wiggle room there.
