West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

I am thinking this... for some reason I think the defence will remain Cole, Terry, Cahill and Ivan. Jose doesn't seem too keen on Luiz, he seems to make terrible choices when playing alone the back, much more suited to a DM role.

it's a close call between them but i fancy Gerrard to get forward more this season, plus he's always on pens/corners/free kicks.

Did think about Mignolet but wary of too much Liverpool. Anyone think Lescott is worth a shout for the early GW's with injury to Nastasic?

This is the problem, undoubtably. BUT, everyone has a price, utd just can't pay it anymore. Should have thrown everything at Fabregas when there was a sniff of opportunity. If Fernandinho was £30m, it was obvious Cesc would be £40m at least.

I don't think it's a finacial issue more an issue of leadership. If Jose was at Norwich then all the top players would be there. Moyes is a nobody outside the premier league and although that may change, that's just how it is now.

Moyes one hope is to bring that youth through, we've been buying young players up for years and developing them only to see them sold or leave for free.

            No, I don't think so.

You'd expect a Premier League club to make a bid for Luiz Gustavo now that Bayern are hinting that he's surplus to requirements, but it hasn't happened yet.

          You pervert my meaning ...

Some would have United make bids for/sign 6 "World Class" players. We neither need that many nor do *any* team have a realistic chance of signing that number without an owner who owns their own harem.

Ajay, just saw your question about Palace midfielders and here would be my suggestions for each of them:

Thomas: Probably the best fantasy pick there is from the Palace team this season at 4.5. He could pick up some occasional goals and assists, but then again he's nothing special. As with all Palace wingers there is an imminent danger of rotation considering all of the wingers we've picked up.

Jedi: What a player. A great asset for Palace, but a horrible fantasy pick. Too defensive for FPL, wouldn't recommend picking him.

Williams: A great young talent, potentially a future star. I reckon this will be his breakthrough year, but Holloway has tended not to play him as much as he deserves. I can see him picking up some points, but consistent starts may be an issue.

Keep your eye on: Campana, Bolasie, and Garvan (on pens). All potentially great players, especially Campana. If he starts scoring goals, he could be one to consider.

    Word of warning:
We've seemed to have signed an excessive amount of wingers this transfer window, in order to replace Zaha. Although this is great for the depth of the squad, I honestly believe picking a Palace winger may be harder than predicting the strikers for Man City each week. If we manage to sign Bent and Chamakh, the same can be said for our forward line.

I'm staying away from our midfield to start, but if you choose to do otherwise, I hope this helped a little. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

    The value of transfers

There was an earlier post where people were discussing having the Chelsea goalkeeper a defender a midfielder and a villa striker. The idea was you can transfer out the goalkeeper (and villa forward to a lesser extent) when you get a free transfer. This is however flawed logic for the following reasons.

There is no such thing as a free transfer. All transfers have the potential to gain you points so wasting a transfer on a low scoring (differentially ie gk tend to score very similarly so you won't gain a lot by switching them in theory) position like a gk should actually cost you points. You have to think of opportunity cost when planning to burn transfers like this.

There is also the added unknown of how the new managers and there teams will go as well as the usual unknown new players and the usual surprise bandwagons you will want so ideally we should be trying to get a team we would be happy with for the first 6 gws with as few transfers as possible.

Personally I am looking at trying a team with three chelsea where I can bench two for the blank so only one transfer required.

"Personally I am looking at trying a team with three chelsea where I can bench two for the blank so only one transfer required."

I believe this is what those people with Cech and Chelsea defense are doing: benching them for the blank and transferring them out when the opportunity arrises.

But I think you might be omitting the fact that a Chels GK means you have 4 subs to cover for the bye week, rather than 3 ... so it's easier to maximize the DGW while also being able to make switches for week 3.

Haven't seen the hot topic as not been on for a few days trigg I'll check it out.

As per below the post is about the value of transfers and the opportunity cost not having a fk as a valud dbl strategy (which incidentally I don't think it is in this case).

Sorry guys I think I must not have emphasized enough the reason for the post in the first place. It is the opportunity cost (in points mainly) of transfers. Having a 6.5m gk on the bench or playing means you have money tied up that could be spent elsewhere getting you points and unless you wc you will waste a transfer taking out the gk and then another redistributing the funds on the rest of your team (most likely)

Imo you need to view every transfer as the potential for points and try not to waste them.

True, but this assumes that one always uses transfers as it is. What if - shock - you don't always use transfers? Then your point becomes moot.

And, yes, I have done this. Often.

Fair enough king but how far into the season do you get before your team is settled enough to not make a transfer. Usually it is more the second half of the season in my experience when we have a lot of value built up in players and so a lot less flexibility in our squads.

Even if you do think your team is fine and you use the transfer on a gk the opportunity cost still exists as you could have used it to change a fwd or mid who scored a hattrick that very gw.

I think too many just see transfers as free unless there is a -4 involved but I always try and put a value on them so that I don't end up wasting them.

I think you're over complicating things... I view this rather simply as:

Points scored by the players we transfer in = x
Points scored by the players we transfer out = y
Number of points we spent on the extra transfers = z
What's the net overall gain / loss of the transfers we made during the season = ?

      x - (y + z) = ?

Some weeks will be hits & others misses but, so long as we have a positive return by year-end we've done alright for ourselves, no?

You are right kyle this is the gist of my post.

However what I was trying to point out (and a lot don't seem to realise) is that that the points that the accumulation of points of player x you transferred in is what improves your rank overall hence the reason we make transfers.

If you waste a transfer or two taking out a gk and having to redistribute the funds across your team there is a high likelihood that your net accumulated points will be less as you haven't been using your transfers to gain maximum points.

What people should be thinking every time they make a transfer is there is an opportunity cost involved. Think of every transfer as a -4 (the opportunity cost could be even more) and try and get the maximum return for all of your transfers.

I think this is a philosophy that all the players that have played the game for a decent period know instinctively as we don't tend to waste transfers on the cheap defender/midfielder or goalkeepers very often due to the fact we know the potential returns from the transfer are likely to be not as high as transfers regarding the attacking positions where form and point returns can vary massively with fixtures.

Opportunity cost - we all know it exists instinctively but we need to acknowledge it when planning transfers like the one mentioned earlier involving a gk imo.

Ok, let's talk 'Opportunity Cost' & look at the case of Cech.

GW1 he's the best 'choice' / GK we have given our 'scarce' budget.
(Two home fixtures to weaker sides & nailed on)

GW2 & GW3 however, is an away trip to MUN & then a blank.
Which, will probably only garner us 2pts.

So, I'm thinking the best 'alternative' to keeping Cech is another finding keeper, right?

Granted I'm making a few assumptions here but, let's look at it his way:
Cech gets us 8pts in GW1 & we then take a -4pt hit to remove him because of his GW2 fixture & GW3 blank.
Then the keeper we replace him with nets us 4pts over the following two weeks.

          -Points scored by the players we transfer in = 12 (Cech's 8 + New GK's 4)
-Points scored by the players we transfer out = 2 (Cech's 2)
-Number of points we spent on the extra transfers = 4
-What's the net overall gain / loss of the transfers we made during the season = ?

          12 - (2 + 4) = 6

Also note, that we didn't include the 'other' CHE player or his replacement in this equation.
I believe if we did include our 'free' transfer's contribution, it would certainly tip the scales in our favour.

*Honestly, I think we're both on the right track here...
I 100% agree we shouldn't 'waste' transfers on low scoring defenders / keepers & hope to come out ahead but, a DGW followed by a blank certainly changes that dynamic.

Also something to consider regarding the transfers is the fact that lots of people will start full of Chelsea with a side of Villa and then as soon as GW2 starts, they will sell, sell, sell and nobody's going to buy with the International Break coming after GW 3 too.

Depending on if the flagging system and price protection has changed you could lose a fair bit across the 2 or 3 players you intend on transferring out, while all the players you want will likely have their prices rising to leave you well short of affording them. To counter that it might be tempting to make early transfers yourself, but lots can go wrong on International Breaks. You could end up needing extra transfers or having a bad team value early on, missing out on a player who starts on fire.

Say Cech keeps 1 cleansheet a save point and lets in 1 goal in GW1 you wont want to get rid also Hazzard gets an assit and a goal you wont be getting rid either. Bentekke 1 goal plus 4pts for 2 games you move him on on saturday evening you can jump onto an early bandwagon. no loss in team value. maybe an increase and a good start to boot. What value is in that

Say cech concedes in both games and benteke does f all and everyone is dumping both of them like hot potatoes, you would be left having to take them out for a point hit or lose value.

          It works both ways.

There is also the fact that there are a lot of wc and early transfers played in the first week so value will likely drop with all the kneejerkers taking players out even before the second game of the gw. It really is a minefield trying to plan transfers or putting players in you know you will have to take out imo

There's one aspect of this DGW that should be part of this topic, but seems to be overlooked most of the time.

It's certainly an opportunity cost around team investment. Having Cech OR a CHL defender is quite expensive. Even if you are selling them in GW2, 3 whatever, it frees up some cash. The new GK may be 5.5 or 4.5. Similar with the defender.

So how would you have set up your squad differently in the first place without the Chelsea distraction, and how many extra points would that setup get you?

To get from selling the Chelsea player to the point where you have the ideal setup isn't necessarily done in one transfer. It could take numerous weeks or the WC use.

This is why I am going to avoid Chelsea at the back, and only pickup attacking players where I know I can swap in the same value area immediately.

I did hint at that in the post too absinthe but you have put it much clearer here. I agree with everything in your post.

I will probably go with a chelsea def but my draft team has not changed as a result of the double (which I didn't expect to go ahead until after xmas) so I haven't altered things for one gw.

Going to be a lot of panic wc's I reckon for all these people going with 4 dbl gw players I reckon.

I'm not planning any def above 5m, therefore it's too disruptive to get involved. I want to be riding the front 8 form and bandwagons and leaving the def as static as can be. For once is love to not have to WC early on, let alone plan to do it as part of a strategy for one lousy extra fixture.

Yh I hear you. I managed to keep my wc until gw12ish last year then squandered it in a panic trying to get mata in thinking he was essential. He was gone 4/5 gws later, lesson learned.

I'll be holding out for the bumper gws this year hopefully instead of having to gear all my transfers for weeks in advance for one bumper gw or else I'll use it to set my tram up for the run in after a dbl.

That's my thinking as well. Someone mentioned having 2 Chelsea defenders, but I think the attacking players are playable against United and then I'd just have to transfer out a defender for possibly City.

I also had a debate with Silva v Coutinho and I think Silva is more established and, sure, the goals will be shared throughout the squad, but Silva has plenty to pass to and I think those chances will be finished more often than not. I guess I just don't trust Liverpool too much. Coutinho put on some great displays though.

    Speroni McGregor

Thats too strong a defence imo. I would say upgrade up top but there arent any optiins really. Tbh i have 4 mil sitring in the bank not knowing what to do with. If only RVP was 0.5 cheaper

I'd downgrade Zaha to a cheapie and keep that money in the bank for flexibility. If Zaha does well, you can always transfer him in, but if you aren't planning to play him, he's wasted on the bench.

Also make sure you've got a plan for the GW3 blanks. You've got 3 DGW players up front, but only 2 weeks to transfer them out. Maybe that justifies why you have Zaha, but nobody knows if he'll even get game time. If that isn't the case, you're playing with 10 or taking a 4 point hit in GW3.

Kind of pointless to plan so long term, but it's just to get you thinking.

I also like Boruc over the promoted keepers.

Striker spots are a bit more valuable, though. I don't think Bony is worth taking one of those sacred three spots over the likes of RVP, Benteke, Soldado, Sturridge, etc.

I'd need to see more of Swansea with Bony upfront to commit to him. Last year the striker's role at Swansea was primarily to create space for Michu.
