Pre-Season

Results Round-Up – Thursday

With as many as 16 Premier League sides preparing for friendlies tomorrow afternoon, the stage was left for Swansea last night as Michael Laudrup’s side eased through to the Europa League play-offs. Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen is optimistic he’ll be ready for Tottenham’s trip to Palace, Sam Allardyce is doubtful over Andy Carroll’s availability, while Liverpool owner John W Henry has stated Luis Suarez is going nowhere this season.

Malmo 0 Swansea 0
Michael Laudrup made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-0 at home in the first-leg of their Europa League qualifier last week. Only Ashley Williams, Wayne Routledge, Michu and Wilfried Bony kept their places, with summer signings such as Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo getting the nod in central midfield and on the flank respectively. Chico also recovered from the thigh injury that has kept him on the sidelines recently as Jordi Amat dropped to the bench in a defence that also included Neil Taylor and Ashley Richards. Routledge and Michu were both subbed off midway through the second period as the Swans secured a comfortable passage into the play-offs, with the draw set for later today.

After the game, Laudrup praised his side’s defensive display after the visitors kept out their opponents yet again. The Swans have now registered seven clean sheets in a row and have conceded just one goal in nine games across their entire pre-season campaign – a record that their manager reckons bodes well for the season ahead:

“I am happy with the clean sheets. Not only that, but we are not even giving away chances and that’s important. That gives confidence to the whole team, the fans, when you know you are strong and that you won’t give much away. It is different when you concede every time then you need to score two goals to win a game. We had periods last year when every time opponent came close to our box it was a goal but I think we have improved and I am pleased that area…If we had to find something negative then maybe offensively we did not play that well and we could have done much better. We have to do much better. But when you play away in Europe or the Premier League you cannot always dominate and clean sheets are always important. “

In Other News
Liverpool owner John W Henry remains adamant the club will not be selling Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguayan has been forced to train away from the first-team after his very public attempt to push through a transfer earlier in the week and despite threatening to bring the PFA into the matter, it seems Suarez may well find himself unable to force the issue.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Henry revealed Suarez and his agent had been informed any transfer needed to take place earlier in the transfer window in order to allow Brendan Rodgers time to draft in replacements – despite the fact he is banned for the first six matches of the season.

“I think the issue has been resolved now. We have said ‘no’. Luis will be a Liverpool player on September 3 [the day after the transfer window closes]. I’m unequivocal that we won’t sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won’t be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement.. It’s a football reason. It’s not about finances. That’s why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who’s already moved or isn’t moving, we can’t replace him. So for football reasons we can’t sell, and especially to Arsenal.”

With the relationship between Suarez and Rodgers having broken down completely earlier in the week, it remains to be seen just where this leaves Suarez in the Liverpool pecking order, should Henry keep to his word. Certainly, a move to the Emirates looked the best solution for both parties but the Uruguayan will need to ingratiate himself in Rodgers’ good books before Fantasy managers will contemplate him once again, with Daniel Sturridge’s position as the main forward looking stronger by the day. Over at the Emirates, the situation also bodes well for Olivier Giroud’s prospects for the season ahead. After also failing in a bid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger may well decide to keep faith with his compatriot, handing us an 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) priced option as the Gunners’ lone forward – given that there’s still over three weeks left of the transfer window, though, this one is likely to run right until the death.

Jan Vertonghen remains hopeful of making Tottenham’s Gameweek 1 opener at Crystal Palace. The Belgian was stretchered off after turning his ankle on a rain-soaked pitch in Hong Kong against Sunderland recently and looked likely to be ruled out of the Eagles clash but speaking to the press yesterday, he revealed:

“It was two weeks ago that I was injured in Hong Kong and I’m making a lot of progress. I’m starting to run, but the next game is in 10 days’ time so it is going to be quite close. You never know what can happen and I will always aim for the best and hope next week I’ll be very close.”

The Belgian’s return looks vital to his side after the decision to sell Steven Caulker left Andre Villas-Boas with limited options at the back. A superb opening schedule sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks and, having finished fifth top scoring defender in his debut campaign, with five goals to his name, Vertonghen – providing he proves his fitness – certainly looks to have the platform to push on and take advantage of a very favourable run of upcoming fixtures. His potential return dents the appeal of Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, though – as yet it remains unclear as to who is regarded as the first-choice partner for Vertonghen in central defence but with both priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers are hoping Villas-Boas gives an indication to his preferred regulars as we look for a budget-friendly route into the Spurs backline.

Andy Carroll is facing a race against time to be fit for West Ham’s opener against Cardiff a week tomorrow. Yet to feature at all this summer due to a heel injury, the Hammers forward had stated earlier this week that he felt on course for a return but, speaking to the media yesterday, Sam Allardyce was far more sceptical and even suggested Carroll may not be fit until Gameweek 4:

“Andy is making good progress and doing some running. We will look at things over the next week but considering where he is in his preparation. I would have thought that we’re looking more realistically at the match following the international break, which is Southampton away on September 15.”

Providing Carroll is ruled out, the Hammers first three fixtures (CAR, new, STO) may see ownership in Kevin Nolan pick up. The West Ham captain notched a hat-trick in his previous home game (albeit with his sidekick Carroll leading the line) and has already notched three times in pre-season – at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks a decent shout for those Fantasy managers intent on wildcarding after Gameweek 3, in order to cash in on the typically hectic market activity over that two-week domestic hiatus.

    Draft #11

    Mignolet • (Lewis)
    Cole • Toure • Koscielny • (Chester • Brayford)
    Walcott • Hazard • Coutinho • Mirallas • (Kim)
    Soldado • Lukaku • Dzeko

Very template at this stage, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing, being in a Casual's league.

you're asking him to him to go up in price to get Silva for know obvious reason even though he has no Liv coverage and already has Dzeko and even worse to sell a goal-scoring midfielder in Kim for a yellow card prone DM who never scores and seldom assists???

      All 3 forwards are risky.

Sol is new, Lukaku needs to get his chance and Dzeko will always be the first striker to be dropped in favour of new or bigger signings.

Soladado is a nice differential from the rest of FPL. Everyone has Lukaku for DGW, so I ak in the same boat as many. I like Dzeko as a punt, he will st least start GW1-2

9/10 - having both Lukaku and Dzeko irks me - you're gonna need to take both of those out, once Lukaku has a blank week and Dzeko faces stiff rotation threats. The rest is pretty template but templates exist for a reason.

no matter how hard I try I keep coming back to:

      Mig (Davis)
Zab, Coleman, Mert, (M Turner, Brayford) - perhaps Kos for Mert-

Henry said that it is too late in the window to sell Suarez, as there isn't enough time to find a suitable replacement. He said even if Real Madrid were to make an offer, there would be no chance he could go. Suarez himself was told that if he were to be sold, it would have to be at the start of the window, to allow the funds to be spent.

    Mignolet boruc
    cole collins shaw chester parr
    hazard miralas wally koren jarvis
    rvp dzeko lukaku

    - spending 10m on keepers, can potentially free up 0.5 mil if i want to upgrade somewhere else
    - collins/shaw rotate well, chester/parr rotate well...will transfer cole >> mert/vert in future
    - koren/jarvis rotate really well

    Reckoner.

Is Van Persie worth his 14m price?

I have taken the strikers from the top 6 teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man United & Tottenham) to look at their stats for last season.

I have taken the points each player scored over last year, divided it by the minutes played and then multiplied it by 90 to give points scored per 90 minutes (I know this isn't 100% accurate but give a good estimate).

Below is the results in order of points per 90:

    1) Hernandez - 8.69
    2) Van Persie - 7.55
    3) Lukaku - 7.14
    4) Sturridge - 7.11
    5) Podolski - 6.66
    6) Suarez - 6.46
    7) Dzeko - 6.42
    8) Rooney - 6.39
    9) Aguero - 5.60
    10) Ba - 5.44
    11) Giroud - 4.67
    12) Torres - 4.65
    13) Defoe - 4.63
    14) Adebayor - 4.06
    15) Welbeck - 3.94

This year I have decided to employ a kind of "Moneyball" tactic. I believe there are some bargins to be had if you compare this points per 90 to their cost. So I took the points per 90 and divided it by their cost to give a kind of value (points returned per 90 for each million spent if you will):

    1) Hernandez - 1.158
    2) Lukaku - 0.892
    3) Dzeko - 0.856
    4) Sturridge - 0.789
    5) Podolski - 0.784
    6) Ba - 0.640
    7) Rooney - 0.609
    8) Suarez - 0.587
    9) Giroud - 0.550
    10) Defoe - 0.545
    11) Van Persie - 0.539
    12) Welbeck - 0.526
    13) Torres - 0.517
    14) Aguero - 0.509
    15) Adebayor - 0.507

As you can see Hernandez could end up being a real steal, he won't be in my team from the off but I will be keeping an eye on his game time.

As for Van Persie his 14m is far too high for me, the only time where I could see him being worth this price is if you were to captain him every week which would go some way to mitigate the cost and push his Value up to 1.079 in the 2nd list above.

In your second list though, how many are nailed on to start the first game?

Giroud? Sturridge if fit? Aguero if fit? Not many.

Podolski and Giroud are pretty nailed on.

Analysis is incomplete without looking at Benteke, Berbatov and Lambert etc.

Also super subs have a bit of a weird bias in these types of numbers. You're better off doing points per appearance (so Hernandez's 30 min cameo counts the same as RvP's 90 minutes because each gameweek that's what you're effectively going to get)

It's a dam sight harder to be consistent for 38 games. First on your list that matches that criteria is a banned Suarez, then followed by RVP. Just saying 😉

These kind of stats are never going to tell the full story, you still need to use it in the right way.

But I still believe it provides some more stats that will help in picking the best players.

As I said I'm trying a new kind of thinking this year. Instead of trying to get 1 player that scores 25 goals in 38 games try to get 2 players that score 10 and 15. Spread the risk and makes for a more balanced squad.

          You forget the captaincy conundrum.

If captaincy wasn't an issue it would be better to use the cash in a spread fashion. But players like RvP are able to consistently get you 4-6 points and have blow out weeks. Without them you're hoping to catch the 10-15 goal player at the right time.

I don't mean you haven't thought of it at all, but I think you're underestimating how important it is.

Without Bale we do not have another consistent source of captaincy points - even Suarez last year was too inconsistent - hattrick away one week, then blank in the next at home when everyone captained him.

I played without RvP last year because I figured I could get a good captain out of all my options. While some weeks I was ok and beat/equalled RvP - others I just missed the boat because of inconsistent returns (to be fair I could've/should've just captained Bale - but I had Suarez/Walcott/Mata)

Yeah, but to get your 25 goals that way you've had to use up 2 of your forward slots - surely with RVP in the team you'd have another cheap forward who would pick up a few goals over the season, so you need to add those goals into the equation as well...

How do you come to that conclusion?

He is owned by 36% of players, that would require a mass sale of him for him to drop.

Then factor in all those people who are playing for GW1 and then WC'ing who'll likely have him in their long-term teams and you have a whole bunch of transfers in.

It's not always about value, it's about points on the board. Hernadez may well be the best value by a considerable margin but if he only plays 40% of the time then what's the point having him because you wont get the points? It's the same with Ba, Torres, Giroud etc. RVP guarantees the points, the others you have to select at the perfect time.

But RVP starts nearly every game and you captain him nearly every game. Because he's Reliant Robin. You have to factor in actual game time rather than just the points per minute played IF they all play the same game time.

IF they all played the same game time many of them wouldn't be getting the points that they DO get in their actual game time because of multitudinous reasons - fitness, attitude towards keeping their starting role (or fighting for one) etc.

I like ur analysis, i did similar calculations earlier on.

One important concept missing though is that of Captaincy. 1 "sure" option (RVP) will prolly score more than 4 or 5 "average" options because of the guesswork needed for the latter, unless you are very lucky with captaincy picks

Great post, however slightly flawed ratings.
Using the player cost will never give you the rating you desire.
You need to to take into account the price for the lowest priced replacement option since we have to spend that money.
So for strikers 5m is the price of the cheapest striker who will play, so any analyse of RVP should use 14-5 as the input price.

GREAT POST and I just wanted to add to it for those interested and to complete the top 20 of so strikers from the last the players outside the big clubs looks as follows:

      Lambert - 5.38 - 0.717
      Benteke - 5.30 - 0.558
      Berbatov - 5.25 - 0.688
      Crouch - 4.96 - 0.823
      Fletcher - 4.97 - 0.664
      Kone - 4.29 - 0.614

I told you all Crouch was a bargain! Lol

But seriously I have always said that value should be a consideration but you don't win anything for having spent your pennies most economically at the end of the season you win by having the most points (or else we would all pick two keepers and 6 cheap defenders every week as they always come up highest in the FPL 'value' stats'

Some positions a lot more than others dictate spend over value and the front line has always been one of those which has been proven time and time again by the elite who are successful at this game.

Cole is having a DGW. So he is definitely staying.
Koscielny is one of the best value defenders that we have for 5.5 and Coleman seems to be an OOP prospect and hence drafted to my team.

most probably looking for a 4-3-3 formation although I know that 4 defenders could see me get less points

Yes Mignolet in goals. Liverpool will surely keep a cleanie vs Stoke at Anfield though!

      No.

Koscielny, Collins, M Turner, Yoshida, Chester is mine. Turner about to become Olsson, I think ...

Anyone have an idea as to what formation city were deploying in their pre-season friendlies (having 1 or 2 strikers up top). Still contemplating the risk associated with having dzeko.

B - Although could consider Michu for Silva for your City coverage as they have delicious opening fixtures. Then bring in Bony after the DGW.

I guess this isn't unusual but there does seem to be a lot of unresolved transfers going into the new season. Still time for plans to be turned upside down and for Giroud's ownership to go through the roof... 😉

I have memories of the 2005 semi final against them where we played terribly and somehow got through, knew we would get them.

A very young team won't be able to cope with Mario 😉

Probably a stupid question but Anelka or Dzeko. Just think that Anelka is a real bargain and it great form! Also Snoddy and Nolan pretty even?

    GW1

    81st minute.

Villa lose the ball again. Arsenal on the break. Wilshere to Cazorla who lays it off to Sagna on the overlap. Sagna whips in a juicy ball and GIRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUDDDD.

    Hat-trick!
