Pre-Season

Results Round-Up – Thursday

With as many as 16 Premier League sides preparing for friendlies tomorrow afternoon, the stage was left for Swansea last night as Michael Laudrup’s side eased through to the Europa League play-offs. Elsewhere, Jan Vertonghen is optimistic he’ll be ready for Tottenham’s trip to Palace, Sam Allardyce is doubtful over Andy Carroll’s availability, while Liverpool owner John W Henry has stated Luis Suarez is going nowhere this season.

Malmo 0 Swansea 0
Michael Laudrup made seven changes from the side that triumphed 4-0 at home in the first-leg of their Europa League qualifier last week. Only Ashley Williams, Wayne Routledge, Michu and Wilfried Bony kept their places, with summer signings such as Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo getting the nod in central midfield and on the flank respectively. Chico also recovered from the thigh injury that has kept him on the sidelines recently as Jordi Amat dropped to the bench in a defence that also included Neil Taylor and Ashley Richards. Routledge and Michu were both subbed off midway through the second period as the Swans secured a comfortable passage into the play-offs, with the draw set for later today.

After the game, Laudrup praised his side’s defensive display after the visitors kept out their opponents yet again. The Swans have now registered seven clean sheets in a row and have conceded just one goal in nine games across their entire pre-season campaign – a record that their manager reckons bodes well for the season ahead:

“I am happy with the clean sheets. Not only that, but we are not even giving away chances and that’s important. That gives confidence to the whole team, the fans, when you know you are strong and that you won’t give much away. It is different when you concede every time then you need to score two goals to win a game. We had periods last year when every time opponent came close to our box it was a goal but I think we have improved and I am pleased that area…If we had to find something negative then maybe offensively we did not play that well and we could have done much better. We have to do much better. But when you play away in Europe or the Premier League you cannot always dominate and clean sheets are always important. “

In Other News
Liverpool owner John W Henry remains adamant the club will not be selling Luis Suarez this summer. The Uruguayan has been forced to train away from the first-team after his very public attempt to push through a transfer earlier in the week and despite threatening to bring the PFA into the matter, it seems Suarez may well find himself unable to force the issue.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Henry revealed Suarez and his agent had been informed any transfer needed to take place earlier in the transfer window in order to allow Brendan Rodgers time to draft in replacements – despite the fact he is banned for the first six matches of the season.

“I think the issue has been resolved now. We have said ‘no’. Luis will be a Liverpool player on September 3 [the day after the transfer window closes]. I’m unequivocal that we won’t sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal’s majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won’t be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement.. It’s a football reason. It’s not about finances. That’s why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who’s already moved or isn’t moving, we can’t replace him. So for football reasons we can’t sell, and especially to Arsenal.”

With the relationship between Suarez and Rodgers having broken down completely earlier in the week, it remains to be seen just where this leaves Suarez in the Liverpool pecking order, should Henry keep to his word. Certainly, a move to the Emirates looked the best solution for both parties but the Uruguayan will need to ingratiate himself in Rodgers’ good books before Fantasy managers will contemplate him once again, with Daniel Sturridge’s position as the main forward looking stronger by the day. Over at the Emirates, the situation also bodes well for Olivier Giroud’s prospects for the season ahead. After also failing in a bid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger may well decide to keep faith with his compatriot, handing us an 8.5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) priced option as the Gunners’ lone forward – given that there’s still over three weeks left of the transfer window, though, this one is likely to run right until the death.

Jan Vertonghen remains hopeful of making Tottenham’s Gameweek 1 opener at Crystal Palace. The Belgian was stretchered off after turning his ankle on a rain-soaked pitch in Hong Kong against Sunderland recently and looked likely to be ruled out of the Eagles clash but speaking to the press yesterday, he revealed:

“It was two weeks ago that I was injured in Hong Kong and I’m making a lot of progress. I’m starting to run, but the next game is in 10 days’ time so it is going to be quite close. You never know what can happen and I will always aim for the best and hope next week I’ll be very close.”

The Belgian’s return looks vital to his side after the decision to sell Steven Caulker left Andre Villas-Boas with limited options at the back. A superb opening schedule sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the opening nine Gameweeks and, having finished fifth top scoring defender in his debut campaign, with five goals to his name, Vertonghen – providing he proves his fitness – certainly looks to have the platform to push on and take advantage of a very favourable run of upcoming fixtures. His potential return dents the appeal of Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul, though – as yet it remains unclear as to who is regarded as the first-choice partner for Vertonghen in central defence but with both priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy managers are hoping Villas-Boas gives an indication to his preferred regulars as we look for a budget-friendly route into the Spurs backline.

Andy Carroll is facing a race against time to be fit for West Ham’s opener against Cardiff a week tomorrow. Yet to feature at all this summer due to a heel injury, the Hammers forward had stated earlier this week that he felt on course for a return but, speaking to the media yesterday, Sam Allardyce was far more sceptical and even suggested Carroll may not be fit until Gameweek 4:

“Andy is making good progress and doing some running. We will look at things over the next week but considering where he is in his preparation. I would have thought that we’re looking more realistically at the match following the international break, which is Southampton away on September 15.”

Providing Carroll is ruled out, the Hammers first three fixtures (CAR, new, STO) may see ownership in Kevin Nolan pick up. The West Ham captain notched a hat-trick in his previous home game (albeit with his sidekick Carroll leading the line) and has already notched three times in pre-season – at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he looks a decent shout for those Fantasy managers intent on wildcarding after Gameweek 3, in order to cash in on the typically hectic market activity over that two-week domestic hiatus.

Overlooked players potentially ready to defy the fixtures...

    Vorm
    Williams

Swans' season has already started and they look super solid throughout. 5m options, nailed and reliable. I'd only have Kolo/Mig ahead of them actually in their price bracket.

    Pieters
    Cameron

Wilson looks out of favour, but I think we're forgetting the defensive stronghold Stoke is. 5m again for a seemingly nailed on link.

    Diakete

PDC could quite well have them firing on all cylinders and this 4.5 link may well start tempting me if I can eradicate the memories of Villa Park.

Stoke used to be defensively strong under Pulis, this season we can't be sure how they'll do.

When you have Toure for 5.0 at Liverpool, Coleman, playing OOP and if you're happy to accept Stoke staying defensively sound then Everton aren't bad either, at 5.0m. Then there's all the 5.5m options if you can find the budget for them.

From a comment someone made, Mata or Hazard?

I say, Mata because as far as I know, Mourinho said that Mata is the only midfielder comfortable with both feet so he can play him in the center or down the right wing. Surely that means he has more chance of playing?

It was strange that last season the winners had no star midfielders (in fantasy terms at least), but this year I feel there could be real value in MNU's midfield. Here are the prospects:

Michael Carrick £6.0 Projected Points: 111 Probably the only one nailed on, although not the most attacking, the new BP system should suit his style of play

Shinji Kagawa £8 PP: 133 The most promising option for me, unlucky with injury last year. If he plays in the 10 role and performs to his best he will be a must have.

Antonio Valencia £7.5 PP: 48 Overpriced, one to avoid unless he recreates his form of 2010/11

Ashley Young £7.5 PP: 55 One to avoid. Fullstop.

Nani £7.5 PP: 84 Potentially top class if Moyes can get the best from him. Overpriced, plus as with all of United's wingers, gametime looks limited.

Wilfried Zaha £6.5 PP: 78 Will be great value IF he can nail down a starting spot.

Tom Cleverley £6 PP: 89 Has failed to live up to potential, poor attacking return and limited gametime likely.

Anderson £5 PP: 14 IF his form dramatically improves, and he nails down a starting spot he will be the bargain of the season. Is that really likely though?

Powell £5 PP: 4 Same as above

Adnan Januzaj £5 PP: 6 A very promising youngster, he has been heavily involved in pre-season. One to watch, but dont expect too much PL action this season.

Jesse Lingard £5 PP: 3 Same as above

To conclude then, United's midfield is very much unknown, and I think it is very much a case of wait and see. I do believe that there will be brilliant value in United's midfield, I do think that a couple of Zaha, Powell, Zanuzaj, Lingard or Cleverley will nail down regular spots in the team but predicting which of them will do so would be a massive gamble. In short, WATCH THIS SPACE.

Following on from yesterdays post on forwards, here’s my take on the defender differentials. Tried to concentrate on those who offer attacking threat, as that is where you gain an edge (Ranked by % owned, and less than 5%)

    1. Vertonghen (TOT), £7m, 4.9%
Pros: Nailed on in spurs defense, mainly CB but occasionally LB. Highly impressive 5 goals and 3 assists in debut season, expect at least the same attacking output. Kind opening run of 10 games
Cons: Injury doubt for season opener, priced very high, probably too high for many (only Baines more expensive), Spurs don’t keep too many CS so relying on attacking output

    2. Terry (CHE), £6m, 4.6%
Pros: Club captain, 15 goals in 4 seasons (only Baines has more as a defender), a massive attacking threat in the opposition box. One of Mourinho’s favorite’s, opening double gameweek. Cheapest way into Chelsea defence projected to keep 14+ CS (see projections in members area). Honestly feel he’s nailed on to start, with doubts around Luiz (injury), Azpi (Int in Ecuador) Ivanovic (seen as a RB) Cahill (he’s shit) I can see Terry nailed on
Cons: Questions over his game time with Luiz, Cahill and Ivanovic in the mix, and his aging body struggled at times last season. After dgw its mufc away, blank, everton away, not kind

    3. Vidic (MUN), £6m, 3.8%
Pros: Club captain, when fit he will play. Good attacking threat and likely to keep 14+ clean sheets (see projections in members area). Jones, Evans, Rio, Rafael Smalling all qualify also, but Vidic is my pick of these if he’s fit, Rafael (1%) close 2nd but may be rotated
Cons: Injury plagued two seasons, is it a recurring theme? Possible rotation with Rio, Evans, Jones, Smalling, but only a little chance.

    4. Vlaar (AVL), £4.5m, 2.2%
Pros: Club captain, nailed on for 90 mins each week. AVL should improve defensively this season. Bit of an attacking threat to him, 2 goals last season. If they tighten up he could be a steal at 4.5m
Cons: As I said, Villa just don’t do clean sheets. Even if he gets 5 goals, CS are the bread and butter.

    5. Riise (FUL), £5m, 2%
Pros: Left foot: can unleash an unstoppable shot/FK. 10 assists in last two seasons, no goals though, but I can’t see him going another season with no goals. Nailed on LB imo, on FK and corners. Still has goals like his Liverpool days in him I feel
Cons: Has he lost his goal scoring touch? Fulham awful defensively, so like Vlaar, CS are bread and butter, no CS = no good. Tricky opening fixtures

    6. Turner (NOR), £4.5m, 1.9%
Pros: Nailed on, and carries a nice attacking threat (3 goals last season). Norwich showed glimpses of resilience at the back, should they sustain that he will be a very good option. 110+ pts for a 4.5m defender? Yes please
Cons: Norwich alternate from water tight to burst dam on a regular basis. Not very reliable. Slightly injury prone so need to monitor

    7. Lescott (MCY), £5.5m, 1.6%
Pros: Nastasic missing for 6 weeks so in pole position to play alongside Kompany. Very budget friendly way into City first xi. Always a threat from set plays. Scored 14 goals and 6 assists once upon a time, if he nails down a spot he’s essential imo. Also probably the tightest defense in the PL
Cons: Rotation – competition from Nastasic and Richards. Rumours of a move for another CB (Pepe among others mentioned http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2378749/Manchester-City-sign-players-says-Manuel-Pellegrini.html) would make him unpickable

    8. Debuchy (NEW), £5m, 1%
Pros: Nailed on RB who loves to bomb forward. In France he scored 7 goals in his last two seasons. If Newcastle replicate 2011/12 defensive displays he could be an intriguing prospect
Cons: Had little attacking returns (1 assist) last season. Newcastle were dire defensively, will need to shore up at the back before he is considered.

    Honourable mentions:
    Gibbs (ARS), £5.5m, 3%
    Sagna (ARS) £5.5m, 2%
    Coloccini (NEW), £5m, 1.9%
    Kaboul (TOT), £5m, 1.1%

I can't see Tottenham gain more clean sheets with their current squad.
After selling Caulker and Gallas they have:
Vertonghen, Kaboul, BAE, Walker, Naughton and Dawson - 6 defenders that will play
PL + Europa League + FA cup + Capitol One Cup.

Do you think only 6 guys could handle all the games in perfect form?
Besides that Naughton isn't any quality and BAE was injured last season,..

Also to add to this, Spurs have either Paulinho, Sandro, Dembele or now coming in Capoue (talented defensive player IMO) sitting infront of that back 4 for protection. If you look at it that way the Spurs don't look as bad defensively.

Plus add to that a international goalkeeper of Lloris's class. Maybe not as bad of an option as you think 😉

I think Stoke could be interesting differential. Seeing that Stoke have not changed their personnel, I think we will see very much the same type of game plan.

      Last 5 seasons in first 10 GW's read, 4, 4, 1, 4, 4 clean sheets.

In preseason so far, we have seen 4 clean sheets.

I am tipping a CS against Crystal Palace in GW2, and potential 0-0 or 1-1 draw against Manchester City.

    Hello everyone!

Here is the new update of my spreadsheet!

There have been new changes for you -

    1. Players added including Soldado and Lugano.

    2. New 'VS' are added between the likes of Silva and Coutinho.

3.There is also a new sheet comparing the 4.5 mids for choosing that 5th mid.

    Will repost if necessary.

Here is the link - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6W3Px_oyV6-a0laUUpLY0FIbjQ/edit?usp=sharing

    RMT

    Mignolet
    Ivanovic Coleman Mertesacker, Baker
    Michu Hazard Coutinho
    RVP Lukaku/Benteke Anelka

Can’t decide between Benteke and Lukaku for the DGW

Team will change to this by GW3 (but with Hazard benched)

    Mignolet
    Baker Zabalta Coleman Mertesacker
    Michu Hazard Coutinho
    RVP Soldado Anelka

    Subs: Harper, Garrido, Barkley, Thomas

    Things still unsure about:

    Ivanovic or Cole
    Bringing in Soldado and Zab
    Not having Bale

Arsenal started the season with Vermaelen and Mertesacker as first choice defensive pairing. Though when Vermaelen went woefully out of form, Koscielny started getting game time. Koscielny should be nailed on now, though.

This may sound strange but such is the vast array of options for the 3 FWD slots, I can see me getting itchy feet and chopping and changing much to my detriment. For the sake of simplicity and longevity, it could be more prudent to buy Dobbie and powerhouse 5 man midpark...

Not really. Been settled on a team for a while but its dependent on Bale staying. If he goes I have lots of money floating about but not enough to get RVP without weakening elsewhere and even then I'm not sure I want RVP from the start.

I'll be set next Friday, hope to be with the team I'm currently on.

            How about you?

Yeah same really, feels wrong with no Bale or RVP but if Bale goes after the first gw or even gets rested because of an impending move then that would really suck for anyone that has him.

no matter how hard I try I keep coming back to:

      Mig (Davis)
Zab, Coleman, Mert, (M Turner, Brayford) - perhaps Kos for Mert-
      Bale, Haz, Coutinho, Walcott, (Brady)
      Sturridge, JRod, Anelka

      ...providing Bale stays..

I don't like two cheap forwards. I'd downgrade Coutinho to Mirallas and upgrade one of the forwards

perhaps Cout > Mirallas and Anelka > Kone?

I don't know how nailed on Kone is. Jelavic has had a good pre season

Re: Corkyote- Yes they are, people bother to gather stats that help everyone and put together long posts for the sake of others. This site is full of RMT and spam, so it is nice when people make an effort to give us information.

Sure, not saying they are never useful just seems a new trend in the forum compared to last season.

Yes agreed but someone did an analysis the other day taking into consideration the language barrier for foreign players and what they will eat for dinner, taking it a little too far IMO just for the sake of an upvote!!

Arsenal getting the tough draw may be a good thing.

Arsene may realise the cost of getting beat compared to the cost of actually buying a new player & that may force to actually spend something!!!

PS Arsenal are currently around +£10m in this transfer window already.

sometimes i log on here and feel like JFK with cuba missle situation, with dozens of advisors suggesting a variety of courses of action.
"you really need ot go all out attack"
        "prepare a good solid defence"
"go with caution at beginning to see what happens"
"stop sleeping with that world famous actress"
"look at their previous track record"

can someone just give me the winning formula and i will go with it
