PlayON Returns To The Scout

We’re delighted to announce that Fantasy Football Scout will be supporting PlayON over the coming season – a weekly Fantasy game which debuted on the site at the tail-end of the last campaign. Many of our community tried the game out at that time and, due to the positive reaction from you and our own enjoyment in playing the game, we’re now supporting the game for the duration of the 2013/14 season.

This will mean some pre-season guides which will outline the deeper strategies of the game next week, with regular weekly articles offering tips for the forthcoming Gameweek. We’ll also be running official Fantasy Football Scout game with prize pools donated by PlayON. There’s also plans for specific PlayON tables for our members, to help give them that extra edge. More on all that to come.

What is PlayON?

The concept of PlayON is beautifully simple, although there is a welcome level of depth underpinning the game; a factor that will appeal to the more seasoned Fantasy manager.

You pick a starting eleven from the Premier League squads, limited by a budget of £100 million. There is no restriction on the number of players you can sign from each club and you must build your squad in a 4-4-2 formation. Easy.

The depth comes in when you start to look at player prices. These vary week to week and are based on an algorithm that measures recent performance and adjusts their price accordingly. With a bit of research and knowledge, then, you can easily spot a bargain to hopefully give you an edge. You can resave your team as many times as you want right up to 2 hours before the first kick-off. It’s your last saved team that gets entered into all your games.

Once your team is built, this can then be used to enter a number of multiplayer games or one-on-one challenges. You can play a free multiplayer game without making a deposit or just challenge another player for fun.

Alternatively, you can play for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of wining your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings. Similarly, you can challenge another player one-on-one with a slider used to select the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Gareth Southgate and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged.

Why Should I Play?

Apart from the pricing system giving the knowledgeable Fantasy manager an edge, PlayON’s scoring system plays into the hands of those familiar and comfortable with statistics.

While goals, assists and clean sheets all contribute big points to your players’ totals, you also score points for shots on target, saves, interceptions, clearances and tackles. All the data is gathered from Opta so, those Scout visitors who have access to our Members area will have a real edge when it comes to team selection. Using our tables and player comparison tool, you can quickly begin to unearth some gems when you couple this with the player pricing.

The live matchday page is also worth experiencing. Once the matches kick-off, you can watch a live feed of the match events that effect your team with your points totting up as they roll in, vidiprinter style. The standings in your games are also updated live so you can see how you’re faring and if you’re currently in the money.

The game is also developing communities of players, united under their own club. Simply choose the club you wish to represent. Each week you play your team points get added to your club total. In addition, the top points scorer from each club represents the club in the “League of Titans” the following week. Every 10 weeks, the top two teams in each division are promoted and the bottom 2 teams are relegated. We’ll bring you more on this feature next week.

How Do I Start?

It’s all pretty easy. Register an account at PlayON at www.playon.co.uk. You don’t have to make a deposit as you can play the free multiplayer games without shelling out.

We’ve been set up as Ambassadors in the game along with Fowler, Southgate and OptaJoe. This doesn’t mean we’ll be handing out Ferrero Rocher before the match but it does mean we get a fancy badge and can set up multiplayer games and be challenged for one-on-ones.

There is a “Freebie” game running that all can join and you can find us and challenge our team to a one-on-one game for £1. You can also easily create your own games for you and a group of mates. You’ll also find the Fantasy Football Scout team in the “Ambassadors Game”.

As it is the start of the season, PlayON have an offer for people creating a multiplayer game for their friends – set up a real money game for Gameweek 1 and when 10 people join, PlayON will add a £10 bonus to the pot so everyone benefits.

We’ve also got our own regular Fantasy Football Scout multiplayer game dedicated to our community. That’s just £2 to enter and PlayON are guaranteeing a £500 prize pot in Gameweek 1 – potentially, this offers a fine start to the season for one of our community members. PlayON will also be providing more guarantees and bonuses each month throughout the season – so get involved!

You have to be aged over 18 to play real money games at PlayON and if you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hey guys,

I think I'm pretty set in my team for the start of the year. Not going crazy on DGWs as I want to have a safe start to the year with out to many punts. I'm thinking of starting with Torres as he is rested from Spain and should play around 120minutes over the two games.

Wanna take a look and let me know what you think?

    Mignolet (Marshall)

    Mertesacker, Turner, Collins, Shaw, Brayford

    Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Mirallas (Kim)

    Soldado, Giroud, Torres

    0.0 in the bank.

I still don't think Torres will get 120 despite being rested. Also ,I think having Giroud and Walcott is a lil overkill, but otherwise solid.

Oh, and are you sure you want 2 Cardiff Def options in Marshall and Brayford?

What was the verdict in the Cech V chelsea defender debate?

Im back on Cech , just feel it allows more flexibility as there is less rush to replace him , as GW3 can simply play the other keeper.
There is no way i would want to keep a Chelsea defender anyway , so would be forced into an early defender change if getting Terry or Cole

Also think there will be far less downward price pressure on Cech , those who do choose him wont be in a rush to remove , so shouldnt lose any money on him.

Of course the downside is lack of attacking points . Had Ivanovich last year who outpointed Cech by 18 points in DGW1

yes go for attacking points in your DGW players for max returns.

cech might get 2 clean sheets but a defender with 2 clean sheets and a chance of a goal/assists as well and BP providing he's nailed on is better. price is less important than the actual points the player brings home - RVP is very expensive to get but dont bet against him scoring another 20+ goals this season - very hard to find a striker that can score so many plus RVP has consistency as well. Only real thing against RVP is the opening fixtures and the fact that other big teams like chelsea have had a DGW handed to them making not owning RVP for 1 or 2 GW's a possibility.

          for the playing keeper,
and if you want to switch them out, it is basically taking a 4pts. hit, as transfer will be better used on outfield player

I have been debating the same. While i agree that there is no rush to get rid of Cech however that is 6.5 tied up in a GK when the funds could be used elsewhere. IE. Mignolet over Ccch saves 1.0M this would be necessary if you ever need to bring in RVP or Bale, meaning that the transfer needs to be made eventually to free up funds.

Yes but the same could be said for a defender , your not likely to want to play a chelsea defender in GW2 away to united , so you only have 4 other defenders to find three good ones.
With Cech you can bench GW2
After gw1 priority will be taking out Lukaku , thats fairly certain , so the Chelsea defender/goalie is dead money anyway in GW2

I think those vying for a CHE defender have a pretty simple argument: choosing Cech limits your point potential virtually to 12 over the two games, because Cech won't get a goal/assist, most likely won't get many saves, and will not rack up bonus points.

With someone like Ivanovic, you have the potential for him to score an odd goal (like he did last year), and has more BP potential while still being a benchable option come GW3.

But personally I don't think it matters between the two.

Even if Ivan only plays the game against Hull, him scoring 1 goal equals Cech cleansheeting the second game.

And besides, Cole seems nailed on for both games as well.

I like Cech too, part of the reason is that there are a bunch of 4.5 defenders who I like, for 4.5 goalkeepers, there's basically the promoted sides, Boruc, and one of Mannone/Westwood. Not beautiful stuff.

Like you i will have Boruc Cech and my 4.5 and 4 defenders

Then when im readyi will downgrade cech to Marshall or Mannone , whichever is looking better.
And who knows there could be a keeper injury by then , so a 4.0 keeper could be playing.
By starting with Cech have chance to have a good look at the cheaper keepers

Just because they aren't popular picks doesn't mean they're weak.

Sturridge will probably be one of the highest scoring forwards this season,

Altidore is a bit of a punt but should play and Sunderland's first 3 fixtures are pretty good.

And Jovetic is just as good a pick as any of the other City front 4, imo.

While different is ok my GW1 advice is get players who are guaranteed 90mins. You will need your transfers for catching form players, price rises and shifting Chelsea players.

That said, i always take one 'punt' keeps it fun and different. Just 1 at most

Oscar, Jovetic, Sturridge(as only just back, no fitness, agree with you he will be a good player later though).

Altidore is a punt but for .5 more opens up so many players Lambert etc.

Also with 3 Chelsea you setting up for hits transfer wise or a the very least giving no room to shift potential non players and getting on price rises

Only have 2 Chelsea, but yeah, Jovetic and Oscar are definitely not guaranteed the full 90 but neither is Hazard, imo, he just seems the most obvious pick. The points could spread out to so many different Chelsea players that it's such a toss up, I think Oscar could get in on some of that easily.

Anyone here watch the United v Seville game? Testimonial/Friendly or not we were truly awful and have been for the entire pre-season campaign. It really highlighted the fact that we only have 1 central midfielder of any worth in the squad in Carrick and should he be absent we are there for the taking.

Fantasy Football wise it is an easy decision not to back any United players at least though the initial tough spell of fixtures. As and when things ease RVP and maybe Zaha are options, bar that (to coin SAF) there's no value in the market ...

He's already got over 35% ownership already. And I think it'll be very difficult for people to work him into their teams without wildcarding, so honestly I don't even think him scoring twice will affect his value.

    Leighton Baines.

Just look at some of the FPL returns Baines can deliver to your side, year in and year out. Five goals, ten clean sheets, over 20 bonus points and all this, leading to an excess of 170 points. What is interesting regarding this reaction is no-one ever recoils when you suggest a including a midfielder or forward who comes in Baines’s price range.

Propose Nolan and Torres and we are ‘A-OK’ Here is a list of just a few players Baines has outscored on average, over the past three seasons. And he has outscored most of them consistently over the last few years.

Frank Lampard, Kevin Nolan, Steven Gerrard, David Silva, Dimitar Berbatov, Demba Ba, Marouane Fellaini, Andy Carroll, Fernando Torres, Partrice Evra, Branislav Ivanovic, Yaya Toure, Christian Benteke, Kevin Mirallas, Robert Snodgrass, Hatem Ben Arfa, Shinji Kagawa, Stephane Sessegnon and Steven Pienaar. If we could purchase any attacker for £7.5 million who netted us 170 points in a particular year, we would snap him up in an instant.

Outside of his ability to outscore his rivals in the £7.5 million price range, we should also note that Baines’s style of play positively lends itself to the new Bonus Points System as well. Passing with a better than 80% success rate coupled with an average of nine crosses a game, culminating in a chance created every 30 minutes, means Baines’s offensive output will undoubtedly be rewarded generously under the new system.

Well, the idea of Leighton Baines being too expensive has clearly been dismissed. Additionally, his offensive yields have steadily proven far superior to his competition in the fantasy game. On the whole, we should expect even more from Baines this year under Martinez’s system.

Baines is like having an extra Mid in this game, its the Che DGW that has drawn funds away from owning such a player - most teams can afford 1 def big hitter and they are going with Che (Ivan ect) - baines will become a bigger factor after GW1 - its just whether people can fit him in with all the DGW players and still have astrong forward line.

I'm going with Baines this year, you can make a decent team with him too:

      10m on keepers
      3 x rotating 4m def, Baines, mertesaker
      Hazard, coutinho, Walcott, mirallas, Kim
      Lukaku, dzeko, soldado

Baines can be so frustrating though when you get 2pts for a 7.5 defender, which will happen. He does have explosive returns, but also has his dry spells that leave thinking about transferring out. Until you're team has gained some extra value I don't think he's worth it. There will be a similar RVP style points hit knee jerk if he explodes against Norwich though

I know they have had a tough pre season.....but united will still score goals, when they do, i figure RVP to be in on at least half of them, on penos, dead balls, the man is a beast...There is not another player in the FPL to trust with the armband week in and week out (maybe bale).

Depends on whether Eve bring in enough clean sheets - you'd figure Mirallas will score more goals than Baines but baines always has the double chance of a CS and Goal/Assist. Baines is a two edged sword also because if Eve defense turns out poor he gonna get scores of 0 and 1's mixed with 8's but he should score high overall.

The RVP factor. It's like playing with fire...

It's simple. There's 2 camps to start the season: The 'RVP Camp' and the 'Anti-RVP Camp'

The RVP Camp is hoping the Dutchman gets off to a flying start, thus giving them the edge. This benefits them as most other players will need to take a hit to obtain the hefty priced RVP in their teams before he rises that dreaded 0.1 to 14.1. Oh the agony.

The Anti-RVP Camp is hoping RVP blanks on opening day away at Swansea, and is praying Super Vorm can hold down the fort, or Ashley Williams can knock him out this time 😉 . This will benefit the anti-RVPers as if he blanks, his price is likely to drop, as many casuals will transfer him out for the flavor of the month.

Which ever camp you're in, it's a risk. You either risk transferring him out before a drop, or transferring him in before a rise.

So, will you pick the right camp, or get burned by the Flying Dutchman?

      I almost agree.

I think that even if RVP does well for the first few GWs, his price will remain firmly at 14 because of his high initial ownership and the difficulty with which transferring him in would be.

However, if he blanks GW1, everybody with him will see the more difficult fixtures he's got ahead of him and panic. And transferring OUT a 14m player is much easier and more justifiable. Thus his value is guaranteed to fall.

So not really a risk of value.

It won't fall if he scores. Sure he might not rise either but I think the 14m price is enough of a barrier that people will be really struggling to get him in and the smarter FPL players won't. This could turn out badly either way for non RVP owners.

I see RVP being all downside risk

        Example

You pick him from the start and he blanks in GW1
With the high owndership he will drop probably .2
What will you do? You cant really sell him as you
will wnt him bck in GW4 , so you have to sit on him
        while his price falls.

Then after GW3 everyone else buys him for half million
less than you paid , meanwhile the rest of their (better)
teams have outscored you and now have more money

I think you articulated the issue nicely. My perspective as an RVP owner is there there is plenty of value in the mid priced bracket that affording RVP isn't really an issue. You can still have a strong and well balanced squad with RVP in it.

It's hard to work in RVP with a bunch of Chelsea players for the DGW.

Getting him GW4 is good because all of those Chelsea players will have been transferred out, leaving enough funds to pick up RVP when his fixtures clear up.

Who's the best mid option at 4.5m - Thomas? I need a 4.5m to upgrade Nolan to Mirallas, so I guess it will be worth it.

Ross Barkley will end up best value £4.5m this season. He is at risk of starting from the off though. Fellaini leaving will liven this one up.

My back 7. Mignolet, Boruc, Koscielny, Brayford, Chester, Turner and Baines. I want to replace Turner because Norwich is going against Everton in first match. Any other 4.5 nailed on defender? Clyne/Shaw is an option but dont want to double up with Boruc.

How much game time do you think Zaha will get?
I never have had many man u midfielders in my teams in the past because of all the rotation.
I wonder if Moyes will be similar
    Any thoughts?

I really feel that there will be vale in the man u midfield at some point this season.

      Zaha/Nani/Young/Valencia/Kagawa

One of them will prove to be golden.

I predict Young will be the real value mid this season, but as you rightly point out, this needs to settle first.

    Okay, so finally decided..
    Migs , 4m
    Zabaleta - Ivanovic - Collins - Turner - McNaughton
    Walcott - Hazard - Mirallas - Coutinho - Nolan
    Lukaku - Anelka - Benteke

Oh wait, I am still confused.
Suggestions please? 0.5 in the bank.

For a team without RVP or Bale, you should not have Anelka. Find funds elsewhere to upgrade him

      Just my thoughts.

I 99% certain that i am starting with RVP. The only factor which might possibly sway my decision for GW1 ONLY is......I am planning a hit by GW3 anyway! (CHE blank). I guess the risk of not owning him in GW1 is minimized as I will be giving the armband to Hazard anyway! this would give me the option to take a punt on for example the likes of Benteke for DGW. Benteke is almost guaranteed 4pts with DGW.

At the 7m mark who do we like as a midfielder? Nolan is in a few teams but not confident on him if Carroll is out. Snodgrass the obvious fire and forget option, but I'm thinking HBA? Ok a tough first fixture but terrific next 4. Any better options?

Don't forget Adam Johnson as well. 7 million could be a bargain for him. And beginning fixtures aren't that bad.
