The Burning Question – Is Lukaku A Risk Worth Taking?

Next up in our series of Burning Question articles, we cast an eye over Chelsea’s in-form Belgian forward ahead of double Gameweek 1. Home games against Hull and Villa have Romelu Lukaku firmly on Fantasy radars – currently the third most popular frontline option in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with over 22% ownership, plenty are willing to take a punt as they look to get quickly out the blocks.

With both Demba Ba and Fernando Torres vying for a starting berth as Jose Mourinho’s lone striker, the issue of minutes over the pair of matches is something of a concern, bearing in mind there’s a trip to Old Trafford the following Sunday. Having racked up five goals and two assists over just 256 minutes this summer, though, Lukaku’s form gives our contributors plenty to consider.

Evs says….
Quite simply, I would say yes. I am not convinced Jose Mourinho is thrilled by a poacher such as Demab Ba, and will he really turn to a second-gear Fernando Torres? I’m not having it.

Unless a move for Wayne Rooney is fast-tracked, I see Lukaku as the only real option up front for Mourinho; he can hold the ball up, bring in Chelsea’s weapons in midfield and has the ability to turn and run at opponents. The comparison with Didier Drogba is lazy but it’s also a good fit.

Lukaku’s numbers speak for themselves: 31 goals in two seasons at Anderlecht (he scored 131 goals in 93 games at youth level) plus last season at the Hawthorns he netted 17 times in 35 games – again, a ratio of a goal every other game. In his year-long spell at the Baggies, the Belgian netted six times in 15 substitute appearances including a hat-trick against United, so no worries there.

I suspect he’ll start at least one of the two matches in Gameweek 1 but, even if he doesn’t feature in the first XI in both, I will settle for 20 minutes off the bench in either – he’s explosive enough to make the difference with limited pitch-time.

Tinkerman says….
No doubt Fantasy managers will be looking at the two very favourable fixtures in the first Gameweek and anticipating a slew of goals from Chelsea. Lukaku seems to have been handed his fair share of pre-season minutes and has responded well with goals, assists and some lively performances. Jose Mourinho will surely be mindful of the fact that the Belgian outscored both Fernando Torres and Demba Ba in the league last season, despite having played over 500 minutes less than either of his fellow-forwards.

Judging by Mourinho’s comments, however, rotation is a real worry and I suspect he will make full use of his squad over the double Gameweek, especially given the importance of the fixture at Old Trafford on Sunday week. This would likely see Lukaku playing significantly fewer than the 180 possible minutes over the two Gameweek 1 fixtures, with a real possibility of him starting on the bench in one of the matches against Hull and Villa.

Many will point out that he didn’t need much game time last term to rack up the goals. Regardless of this, we have to take into account the fact that starting with Lukaku leaves us facing an additional tough decision: we either bench him in Gameweek 3 (as well as having a dilemma the previous weekend when he plays against United) or use a precious transfer to swap him for another player after one or two Gameweeks. I personally think he has the potential to score well in the opening Gameweek, but I’d rather pay more attention to the prospects of alternatives who seem guaranteed to get close to 270 minutes over the first three Gameweeks and who don’t require us to factor in the use of a transfer.

Spencer says…
Looking at the Blues’ fixtures for the double Gameweek, I feel that a Chelsea forward is a must have. No disrespect to their opposition, but Hull are newly promoted and Lambert’s teams have never been the best defensively. So who are the contenders?

For all his recent gongs – the Golden Boot in Euro 2012 and this year’s Confederations Cup – Fernando Torres still fails to convince on the Premier League stage. As for Demba Ba, his 38 goals in just 80 appearances in the Premier League is impressive but I question whether he play as the lone striker role in Mourinho’s preferred formation.

That leaves Lukaku. While 17 goals in 43 appearances is less impressive than his two rivals, he is seemingly ready-made to fit Mourinho’s tactics. Big, strong, and powerful, the Belgian has all attributes that Mourinho likes in his forwards and, for me, that will see him get the minutes that will repay Fantasy investment.

Applebonkers says…
For the double Gameweek I really think so. While he seems unlikely to get 180 minutes, paying 8.0 for a striker who looks good to start at least one of the games looks a bargain – particularly if that game is against promoted Hull. As a guilty recipient of his 16 points off the bench in Gameweek 38 last season, we’ve also seen how he can impact matches without earning starts.

Beyond the double, Torres has the European experience (and goals last season) which Lukaku and Ba both lack – the Spaniard looks favourite to start the European Super Cup against Bayern Munich after Gameweek 2, adding more weight to Lukaku’s chances of going up against a United defence. We have to consider that Mourinho will have seen his hat-trick against the champions on the final day of 2012/13 and United’s rearguard will hardly relish an early re-union with Lukaku’s pace and power – as the most advanced central attacker, either in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, he could still thrive on limited game time. After that, I’d consider other options. Sell for Chelsea’s blank Gameweek 3 and monitor the rotation policy.

Mark Says…
To be honest, I’m still smarting from pinning Lukaku to my bench for his final day hat-trick. Despite that, I have to consider revisiting the Belgian from the off given the double Gameweek prospects. As I’ve stated in the previous “Burning Question”, I don’t see too many of Mourinho’s men given more than 100 minutes over their two Gameweek 1 home fixtures. Even so, Lukaku has the confidence and weaponry to inflict plenty of damage given those minutes, fed ammunition by the likes of Hazard, Mata and Oscar.

I just wonder if Mourinho will opt for Lukaku at Old Trafford on Sunday week, or whether he’ll go for the experience of Fernando Torres. True enough, Lukaku’s fateful hat-trick in Gameweek 38 proved his ability to dismantle the United rearguard but the prospects at Old Trafford a week into the season look very different to that final day showpiece. If he’s kept out of that cauldron, we could be looking at limited minutes over the first three Gameweeks. With the blank to follow, a price drop could loom and suddenly, Lukaku owners will feel pushed into a change or risk losing early cash.

Having said that, Lukaku will make it into at least one of my Fantasy lineups – probably Sky Sports. I’m undecided whether that will translate to my Fantasy Premier League squad, as yet. Much depends on whether I find a place for Hazard in midfield. As I’ve mentioned previously, Chelsea’s assets come with a health risk – a ticket to frustration. I’m unsure if I want to opt for a double helping.

Guys forgive the random post here...but I see essien is back in the Chelsea squad in FPL after his loan to real....or am I missing something?

If he is back in the Chelsea squad - Do you think he will play much...one of Mourinho's old favourites? I used to think he was a great player ...box to box...cheeky punt at 5.5m?

First off, let me ay that as a Hammer i'm really annoyed that Ravel Morrison is everybody's new cheapy pick. He's been looking class in pre-season and did well for the brum last year.

Secondly, any chance of a bit of a critique of two tentative teams.

    1. sans RVP

    Cech (Boruc)
Toure, Coleman, Rat (Brayford, a.n other 4m)
    Hazard, Nolan, Silva, Mirallas (Morrison)
    Giroud, Soldado, Lukaku

    2.5 mil remaining

    2. With RVP

    Cech (Boruc)
Toure, Mert, Coleman (Brayford, a.n other 4m)
    Hazard, Nolan, Walcott, Mirallas (Morrison)
    RVP, Anela, Lukaku

No money left. Change Lukaku to Bony.

I prefer the frist team as i hate a weak forward line, but i think 2 might be stronger. Any changes to either team?

As a 5th midfielder, definitely. I'm guessing downing and jarvis on the wings, nolan's a cert then two from Cole, Morrison, Diarra, Diame. he will definitely get minutes, especially if he takes his chance early on.

Don't forget, for the first couple of games at least, Carroll is out, so i think Nolan will be playing up top. That's just my guess though. Maiga has been playing as a striker but i doubt if he'll start against Cardiff.

Some good picks. Not sure how nailed-on Dzeko will be either now or in a few weeks. I'd downgrade him, downgrade Ivanovic and upgrade Lucas, possibly to Chadli/Mirallas amd rotate Kim and your cheap striker. Your keeper choice will definitely cost you points, get a 5 and a 4 or 2x 4.5s that rotate well.

Adrian, you are the Hammers fan, and your inclusion of him is making me consider him.

Maiga I will probably never agree with but again you must have seen something in him.

A little concerned by Schneiderlin & Noble making you too light in midfield.

Good Chelsea picks, surprised by the lack of Ivanovic in teams around here given his goal threat and Azpi's lack of preseason.

Liking Cech in goal, this is currently my plan too to save a transfer getting a Chelsea player out. Although I have been warned it will make my team 'too inflexible' and be 'too much money in goal', though I see it as a very likely CS spot all season which has to be worth the money. My plan is actually to keep him, Boruc deputizes well for him in GW3.

Crystal Palace defence looks a bit crap so Ramage doesn't look ideal, but HUL/CPL rotate don't they so having Ramage/Chester might be OK.

Not familiar with Cabral - is your Morrison the WHU one or the WBA one? The latter looks like a good bet.

        Good forward line!

Solid, there's not much choice in budget mids anyway so you might as well go for someone cheap like Thomas at 4.5 and get City defensive coverage.

Oscar seems to be gaining some momentum round here, I am considering him, think he will establish himself as the #10?

You reckon Sturridge will start? Was tempted to get Aspas but that completely depends on the Sturridge situation of course.

Coutinho > MIrallas and get a Chelsea defender in?

Thank you, you are a hero for doing this 🙂

I think Oscar has a very good chance of establishing himself. But I'll probably drop him for Mirallas in GW2.

Sturridge is in for now but if I don't hear that he will definitely start, I'll swap for Negredo or Soldado.

Can't have a Chelsea defender - got Haz, Oscar & Lukaku. I think there's more short term potential in the attackers.

Looks like a reasonably well balanced team, would be inclined to get a more heavyweight striker than J-Rod, a Giroud or Benteke would be ideal. To afford that you might want to look at Coutinho > Mirallas.

I think you could switch Rat to Collins and save a bit of money, but understand if you keep him for potential attacking points.

Decent midfield and attack, can't really find much fault with the team, you know the risk you've taken on with Dzeko. I never get Snoddy but he always pops up with points especially from his set pieces.

Another solid team, Cole is probably one of the safest if not the safest Chelsea defenders to have and I like it that you've spent a bit more to get him.

Yoshida is a nice safe pick with Clyne and Shaw still a little doubtful. Though he is a bit of a shocking defender in real life IMO 😉

Would be inclined to keep Wally for now unless he doesn't play at all for England tomorrow and bad news comes in. Very important for Arsenal.

Might need to free up funds somewhere to avoid having both Anelka, Kim and Thomas, that's 3 cheap players in your front 8 and 2 of them will be playing each week. Coutinho > Mirallas would do the job IMO as I see them getting similar points with Mirallas 1.5 cheaper.

I'm not too confident in Everton's ability to keep CS under Martinez (esp from preseason) so think switching him to someone like Collins would even increase your CS, West Ham are very solid.

Not really tbh, Anelka seems all by himself out in that zone unless you want to take a punt on a striker from a promoted team.

Collins was nailed on last year, pretty sure he will be this year, double check he's ok to play though as a while ago I think I heard someone mention some niggle.

Pennant, wow, a bolt from the blue. Can't say I know anything about his prospects.
Solid attack, good midfield, like the Silva pick though you might have spent slightly too much in midfield as I'd be more comfortable with one better defender out of Murner/Brayford/Chester (as well as a better midfielder than Pennant - though doubt you will play him most weeks).

What about downgrading Rat to Collins - same club, might allow you to upgrade elsewhere.

Great forward three. Well balanced actually. Going with Cech in goal as well, will save me a transfer out.

Understand the Lescott pick with Nastasic out, will probably cost you a transfer down the line but may well be worth it. Don't think he's the only guy who can play CB though so it may be a slight risk.

Two epic picks in there with Baines and RVP, looks like you've had to sacrifice the rest of your team though. Not familiar with Grandon - presume he's not expected to be a points machine. Looks a bit light in midfield with Snod/Grandon/Kim basically, and think Lampard will either miss out on much of the DGW or fail to score. Could be wrong though.

Great attack and nice to have Baines though.

Not familiar with Chambers myself, sure he's gonna start? Wouldn't count on Cahill starting much of the DGW, Luiz and Terry started the last preseason and I'd wager they would be Mourinho's 1st choice (if not nailed on) CB partnership.

Love the midfield, probably the strongest I've seen yet. Unfortunately that has compromised your 3rd striker slot. Think Michu is overpriced now - him to someone like Barfa (great fixtures GW2-5 and you know how good he is) might enable you to get a solid 3rd striker.

Nice to see you squeezed RVP in. Think you won't get too many points out of Kim and Lucas but maybe not worth the pain of trying to upgrade them as serious midfielders start around 7.0.

Nice midfield and defence and am also going with Cech in goal right now. Benteke is good to have for the DGW.

Weimann is a very original pick, I rate him as a player but he might make your strikeforce too light (especially given strikers score the most goals and hence possibly the most attacking points).

Also 1.5 in the bank is potentially a clever move allowing you to transfer in anyone you like - so why WC GW1 if you went to that effort? For me it's either leave money in the bank and save your WC, or use up all your cash and WC.

OK, good options to replace Weimann at up to 7.5 are Dzeko, Lambert, Aspas (slight punt), and some have recommended Altidore who will be Sunderland lead striker - they might surprise us, who knows what Paolo di Canio has done to them this summer.

If you free up 0.5 by downgrading Reid to Collins (same team, slight doubt but would guess he's gonna play, did play recently in preseason) you can get Bony in.

Free up 1.0 and you can get Giroud in - I'd do that by downgrading Reid to Collins and maybe Shaw to Chester.

Zaha's an original pick, most probably avoided him because of fixtures/general United pessimism. He's looked OK without really impressing in preseason, lots of potential though. Hopefully nailed on - I would imagine Valencia might eventually take some gametime.

Looks like a pretty strong defence and midfield. Only quibble is you'll have to play one of Kim and Anelka every week but might just have to do that to afford RVP.

Could save money by downgrading Foster IMO, WBA's defence wasn't totally solid last year, not expecting them to produce significantly more CS than the likes of West Ham. Doosra (above) is a Hammer and is going with Adrian (4.5) as their new goalkeeper, might be worth a punt.

Isacki Thank you very much, I was thinking to change lukaku after GW2 to Giroud depending on if im convinced he has improved from last season...

The change of foster to adrian thats an interesting one might have to look into that!

It was Zaha or Snodgrass, everyone is going with snoddy so I thought why not take a punt...

Yeah I may well go with Giroud from the start, I think he's growing!

Adrian is a bit of a risk but he has started almost as many minutes as Jaaskelainen in preseason. Will have to decide closer to the deadline if I want to risk it.

Isacki, you are the man. If you can cast your critical eye over this lot I'd be extremely grateful:

      Mignolet (Davis)
Collins - Murner - Clyne (Amorebieta - Brayford)
Hazard - Walcott - Mirallas - Snodgrass (Morrison)
      RVP - Sturridge - Lukaku

Nice savings in defence giving you a good front 8 with RVP. Is that West Ham's Morrison or West Brom's Morrison? The latter is a good pick IMO, some doubt as to whether the former will start but maybe worth the risk.

Would be nice to upgrade one of Murner or Brayford to a defender not from the promoted teams. Turner would be a good option with good fixtures. I think the Fulham defence is very leaky and Amorebieta is a bit of a card magnet so why not downgrade Amorebieta instead to make that happen?

Be warned Clyne is a doubt, but am kind of expecting him to start.

    Can't decide between

    A. Lescott - Mata - Benteke

    B. Ivanovic - Silva - Soldado

A much more appealing for GW1....but beyond that I'm not so sure.

Doosra, No this is not another attack on you

No matter how much hard work has been done on it, this spreadsheet of yours is really misleading.

    Why?

Cuz it's the damn pre-season! Apkom's played more minutes than Wilshere, doesn't mean he'll be favoured over him

Fabianski's played more mins than Chesney, doesn't mean he'll become the first choice of a sudden.

Yes, it informs of the assisters and the socrers, but the point you're making about nailed on-ness is incredibly misleading

As will be proven this Saturday

It's the tone you're using. Doos has put in the effort and offered a gift to the community.

If you don't want to accept the gift, that's fine. And if you disagree with his interpretations of the facts, that's fine. But don't do it with that combative tone of voice. It's not appropriate for rejecting a kindness.

Might be worth dropping this Nate. Doos has created one piece of information that we can use to help inform decisions. No one is suggesting anyone take it in isolation. If this gets heated I'll lock replies, which I don't want to do, but your tone was a little harsh considering he'd spent time puttng this together and clearly didn't intend it to be seen as the only source of info around.

The spreadsheet reports facts. All else is interpretation, which you are free to do yourself.

Doos is kind enough to report the facts and offer his own interpretation, using his considerable experience. Make your own interpretations as you wish but don't berate his efforts.

Yep. For me, defensive assets are long term investments. For a short term gamble like this, I think there's more upside in the attacking potential.

And it also aligns the process of DGW asset stripping with bandwagon hopping - there are very few defensive bandwagons.

I agree with you for sure, but since Hazard is the only one I am confident of getting more than 120 minutes, a defender is a good option IMO, especially since there is a good chance of at least one cleanie.

That makes sense and I can certainly see the attraction of a defender. I wish we could have 4 Chelsea 🙂

Good alternative but Lukaku is an animal and his physicality alone causes all kinds of problems for defenders. Hull and Villa won't be able to contain him.

Mourinho is the only one who can contain Lukaku.

      50/50 imo
Just dont forget GW2, who will play against United? Depending on how many DGWers you have and if you will take a hit or not, it´s an important question.

Im pretty set on Ivan, Hazard and Lukaku

I'm not sure I'm completely sold on either Lukaku (see article) or Oscar, just wanted to hear what people's thoughts are

Ivan and Hazard are in my team for sure and I may add a third, depending on who my other picks would be and whether I think it's worth the risk.

Cole and Hazard are solid, but I'm not sure I understand the options.

I'm not sure about Oscar or Lukaku as I said. 2 DGWers might be enough IMO but a third would also be good if you think they will outscore the other alternatives by 4 or more points in GW1.

    Away from football.

600m race between Bolt and Farah. Who would win it? I think Farah

      Farah

Beyond 200m and Bolt's muscular endurance wouldn't be there as he isn't conditioned for it nor would he be bothered about training for it.

I think Bolt would blow him away in 400M but 600M would suit Farrah better I think.
