Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Going all in the first Gamesweek

    Foster-Boruc
    Tourne-Koscielny-Turner-Brayford-Chester
    Walcott-Mata-Hazard-Coutinho-Thomas
    Lukaku-Dzeko-Benteke

This is a pretty risky team but one I feel like can give me a good start. I am planning to bring with a (-4) of Rvp and two decent other players replacing the ones having missing GW. So what do you guys think?

Planning to replace Dzeko for Lambert for game time as well. Or een switch Coutinho-Dzeko for Mirallis-Sturridge? Opinions people please and Cheers 🙂

Not a huge fan of Thomas or Foster, and I'm hesitant to endorse 4 DGWers, I'm anxious about having 3!

Also, is Dzeko worth the selection headache every week? Maybe, I don't know if my nerves can take it.

Well yes I am planning to bring in lambert for Dzeko. But I am going with 4 DGW's and feel like attackers may give me the best points. I could pick Szc-Davis Mig-Davis or this Gk pair. Felt this might give me some room in rotating the keepers.

    Szczezny, Boruc
    Yanga-Mbiwa, Lescott, Toure, Brayford, Chester
    Oscar, Mirallas, Hazard, Walcott, Kim
    Stur-Fry, Lukaku, Soldado

.5 in bank for flexibility in GW2, most likely doing Oscar-->Coutinho

I will admit I'm worried about Y-M, but Lescott will play with an injured Nasty and it saves me a Chelsea headache.

Maybe I could do Mirallas-->Snodgrass and then Y-M-->Dawson or another 5er...

It's not the cost of the player, it's your selection of player for that cost. Change Y-M to Clyne or Shaw if your not going to play them GW1, they should be fit for GW2, if not Yoshida. And Lescott isn't nailed on. City are in the market for a new CB. Swap Lescott for Koscielny.

This is all my opinion though, you may think differently, as I'm going for a Southampton defender and transferring Cole to Koscielny for GW2.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew says he has no qualms about handing the captain’s armband to Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa this season – if Fabricio Coloccini doesn’t feature in his starting XI.

Yanga-Mbiwa will do battle with Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson for the right to partner Coloccini in the heart of Pardew’s defence.

Or do what I'm doing with my keepers and starting with Boruc and benching Vorm for a few weeks, until Swansea's fixtures look better. Boruc and Vorm's fixtures may not rotate home and away, but they rotate with decent-ish opposition. That'll free you up £0.5M and you could use that on a defender. And transfer Lescott to Koscielny got your Arsenal cover.

For a while I had Rat just because it amused me to have "Rat" looking at me every time I looked at my team. Then decided Reid was more nailed on for the same price, although Rat is more likely to get 1 goal and 4 assists for the season whereas Reid will be lucky to bag one of each.

Then I recall that you like getting the players that will increase your team value, so Reid's out.

When/if enough people realize Coleman is often playing OOP, he's more likely to go up in value than Rat.

So Coleman for you I think

New Czech player maybe (not listed in FPL yet)

Biggest problem is Di Canio has been favoring using Colback and Gardner as defensive starters (alas, they are both listed as midfielders in FPL).

Oscar weakens C and D because he might end up not playing in one of the DGW games and then blank GW3, Fulham are so bad away from home and Dzeko has the fixtures and managers blessing to play.

He's a Romanian fullback. He's name's pronounced Ratz. He's currently the captain of the national team, but more impressively he comes from Shaktar Donetsk where's he's won consecutive league titles for I don't know how many years (3-4) and he has a considerable amount of Champions League experience, given the fact that Shaktar have made it out of the group stages every year for the past 3 years. He's past 30 so he may be rotated at times, but he brings a lot of experience to the team and has already showed some very nice link-up play with Jarvis further down the line.

Reid or Rat are likely safe at 5.0... Reid slightly more nailed on... Rat will go forward more and probably snag 1 goal and 4 assists for the season (as per his averages)

Collins not nailed on at 4.5 and withdrew from Welsh team mid-week for injury

That can tend to be the problem of FF sites. A fixed set of ideas takes over and perfectly decent teams are told to just move so-and-so to so-and-so else, resulting in a template site team.

I prefer to see that different squads may have equal chances at the beginning of the season since none of us really knows who will do well.

If players are rotation risks or just hopeful punts based on a cheap price, I think it worth pointing out.
      Or if they're injured.

Well said sir. I'm in and out of the site during the day, and that group mindset is easy to spot in those circumstances. Log in early and the current crowd are telling RMT ers that Dzecko is No1 City striker and must satrt, your teams no good if Kim isn't your 5th midfielder. Log in later and the new group has decided that Dzecko is rotation risk, Kim only plays for Cardiff so is useless.

That said RMTers looking for guidance on each individual player is misguided, not even the sharpest of posters on here knows who is nailed on in their managers mind and close season can only go so far in determining form. Probability of game time, balance of your selections and reasoning good enough for YOU are the best you should be looking for in an RMT

Yeah, the only reason I would want ramires would be for the DGW coverage but I think I might downgrade to Taraabt and upgrade elsewhere in my team. Which combination would you rather have RVP and Taraabt or Soldado and Cazorla/Mata. I'm personally leaning towards RVP and Taraabt.

I'd pick Ramirez over Lallana. But I'm not going for RVP, he's too over priced imo. So I'd go for Soldado & Mata. Maybe even Hazard if you don't already have him and use the extra money somewhere else or bank it in case of price rises. Or if you already have Hazard instead of Cazorla you could go for Walcott?

Honestly not a fan of rotating keeper,

Better get Turner instead of Ruddy for Norwich coverage. And Forster is better rotating with Boruc.

      Interesting Chadli and Jovetic choice.
I like Negredo better at that price, but Jovetic is class and can be a nice differential.

      Also, double up Liverpool attack?

Yeah, Coutinho and Sturridge will be at the top of the rankings this season I think, and they have great fixtures to start.

I like the looks of Negredo as well, but I think Jovetic's versatility will have him see more game time.

And the reason I chose the keepers that way is to get coverage all around. I figure they'd at least get some save points. I prefer rotating to having one the whole time anyway, just in case one doesn't play.

I actually will at some point double up Studge and Cout. Can be GW 2 if suddenly Sturridge hits form right from GW 1

Cool if you like rotating keepers. Although the worst feeling is choosing the wrong keeper to play purely because of fixtures.

If you're looking at the long term then Jovetic is probably better due to his versatility. But I can see if Negredo hits form early in the season, he'll partner with Aguero up top for the rest of the season.

Rat is a defender they brought in this summer, Romanian international with a lot of experience, should play.

Morrison is a youngster who is lighting up pre-season but may not see much actual game time, kind of like Barkley from Everton.

Rat in then. Since Collins might not be nailed on.

Morrison is gonna be my 5th midfielder - a bench fodder.
On that price range, there are only mostly defensive midfielder who will get 1-2 point each games.
Whereas Morisson can play and explode in any random time.

So choosing between if my 5th midfielder is gonna play, I would rather take a risk on getting either a 0 pt up to a possible 12 points (ala Puncheon) from my bench rather than a guaranteed 1-2 points.

      So Morisson. Yay.

I'd do with A myself. A little more security with the heavy hitters.

So.. Mannone's started most every game in preseason and he looks as nailed on as ever on here. Yet on the sunderland forums tehy reckon westwood a cert for the no. 1. Any sunderland fans on here? i've got him in at the moment, but i aint convinced about it

At least 3 different Sunderland fans say its going to be Westwood. Westwood played better in ManC match and started their last pre-season match.

I decided to avoid Sunderland D until they've played a couple of games. Nothing but O'Shea is clear to me at the back of that lot.

      Hard to play Cole GW3

      4.5
Clyne or Shaw at SOT when healthy - Shaw likely out GW1, Clyne 75% chance of playing
      M.Turner at NOR
A.Taylor ar CAR, but suspended GW1
