Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I was set on on Anelka, but Vydra's signing makes me too nervous. There's going to be a lot of rotation up front for the Baggies. I tried Lukaku for a while last year and the rotation hurt me badly.

I can see Anelka getting a fair few goals when he plays - if you've got a decent bench he might be worth the gamble. There's the risk of a few 1pt bench starts though...

So if I'm planning on going Mignolet + 4.0 every week from the start and then bringing in Marshall when play wildcard sometime in first ten weeks or so, I should go with the least owned 4.0 to avoid price drop on that player, right?

Seems like taking chances with having to start Mignolet at United in GW3 is a small price to pay for the extra 0.5, when the rest of the opening run looks fairly favorable for just letting the Liverpool keeper ride.

Not planning on staying Mig + 4.0 for the whole season, just the start. Eventually Liverpool does run into some tough matches and it would be good to have someone to rotate. But I don't want to have my 4.0 turn into anything less than that while it is sitting there.

          Ok.

Things is Mignolet is a better keeper then what Reina was and liverpool seems a stronger team this year. I would run with Mign the whole season and play him week in week out. I can see 15 CS for you that way.

Probably right. Sometimes I think we try to build in our insurance policies and plans for too far into the future and it has all gone sideways long before the initial plan. Miggy to the end then! Any 4.0 worth anything more than any other 4.0, in your opinion?

Thanks, he does have more experience than the bulk of the other 4.0s, and McGregor is enough of a wild card that he could easily end up suspended for some odd reason or another. Given is the other 4.0 with minutes under his belt, but I don't see him taking any time from Guzan unless Guzan ends up hurt somehow.

Yes Mign + 4 is enough.

Jaask/Bego got some of his biggest point hauls not on easy fixtures but during 'harder' fixtures where there's a better rotating keeper. Those unexpected CS or save points will come back and haunt you.

That's why I'm a naysayer of rotating GKs

Am I right with this logic?

Morisson looks good in preseason but he may not start for West Ham.

But he's gonna be my 5th midfielder anyway - someone who will rarely unless couple of first 11 gets injured or rotated.

On that price range, there are only mostly defensive midfielder who will get 1-2 point each games.
Whereas Morisson can play and explode in any random time.

So choosing between a 5th midfielder who may or may not play; meaning getting either 0 point or a possible 12 points (ala Puncheon) OR than a guaranteed 1-2 points from my bench, I would choose the former.

    So Morisson. Yay.

Unless, Thomas. Nailed on and attacking.

I have a very very VERY similar dilemma, have Cech, Hazard, Beteke and Lukaku too on DGW.......decided to go with Cech but unlike you no back up GK, and used that extra 0.5 to get Kim on the bench.

Plan is to put in Joe Hart after GW1, Sturridge for Benteke after GW 2 and then have Kim off the bench plus a 4.0 mil defender to make up a starting 11 for GW 3. May spend and extra 4 points to transfer Lukaku out after GW 2, depending on how he and other strikers have done to that point should deem whether it merits it

        Mignolet - Cech

I don't know why exactly but I'm just far more confident with a Chelsea defender than I would be with Cech. This is possibly because it gives you the chance to assess the defender options out there after GW1. It gives you a chance to know who who the first team players are and whether they look like good prospects. From there its easy to trade the Chelsea defender for the defender you weren't confident about before GW1. There is nothing to be learned from trading Cech for Mignolet after the DGW, we all know Migs will be a decent option already.

Morning Dzzzzzz, how we all doing? I cant wait for the league to start 🙂

I am close to finalising my team...have basically options

    Option 1:
    boruc foster
    cole ward chester murner amore
    miralas wally hazard coutinho* koren
lukaku soldado* dzeko....1.5m in the bank

    gw2: cole + hazard >> dawson + lallana...small risk as both lukaku/dzeko may not start in gw2
    gw3: lukaku >> rvp
    gw4: dzeko >> lambert/berbs

    Option 2:
    boruc foster
    cole ward chester murner amore
    miralas wally hazard lallana* koren
lukaku rvp dzeko...0m in the bank

    gw2: cole + lukaku >> dawson + soldado
gw3: hazard >> coutinho or whoever the bandwagon is on

    My thoughts:
    - both options lead to the same team by gw3. One starts with rvp and other gets him in gw3
    - option 1 allows me coutinho which i have been trying to fit in
    - option 2 has more flexibility and my striker force for gw2 is better

Does it matter? High score in GW1 followed by poor performance in GW2 & 3 brings one back to the middle of the pack. It is a long season.

We worry about GW1 now because we're waiting... everything will change with how we think about players and teams once play starts.

if he plays down the middle (as Rodgers would like), he's more potent

but... they need another player on the wing first

he's also young, flashy, and fun to watch play with the ball

and... um... Gerrard will play deeper... yet still have the penalties

and Sturridge... well he does get a knock quite often

and Suarez is quite pricey by comparison and suspended

and, well, Coutinho's on my team...

so come to think of it...

I thought about that as well, but that would still lead to a .5 increase in cost. WHU's fixtures are better then theirs as well.

Surely Sunderland's defense is going to be pretty bad this year? They have no fullbacks and an uncertain keeper situation + Brown is always a big injury risk.

Don't you think that Michu is a risk if we consider that Swans have got a better striker than Graham?.

because BEFORE Michu was the obvious player to mark and now there's two players that should be marked which will make it harder for Michu to score... was that the logic, or did I miss a step?

That's what I meant.. It would be harder for Michu to Score, so i think it would be a bad idea to get him.?

Ivanovic + Snoddy or Mert + Mirallas

The former does involve an extra transfer or two i think. 1 extra transfer atleast.
