Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

If Suarez stays at L'pool I am really leaning towards Giroud. I may even get him & Coutinho instead of Wally & Sturridge. They are also 1M cheaper than the latter option.

But going to get Aguero week 2.
Plan to have one from Aguero, Suarez and Rooney at all times. Use form of those to switch and build value.
Save 3m on RVP, then get him when I build decent value and he doesn't destroy my side as a whole.

The advantages of only getting DGW attackers:

i'll try to make this short but knowing me it'll end up as anything but that 😀

the reasons to avoid DGW defenders - to start, villa have a poor defense and tough away fixtures so that's a no brainer.

Chelsea on the other hand have a bit of a rotation issue as we all know. 4 players who could possibly play at CB and it's hard to say if any one of them will play both games and 2 who players who will vie for RB (though azpi probably won't play the first game given his friendly in Ecuador). not to mention I wouldn't be surprised if Villa nicked a goal as the likes of Benteke and Agbon can cause most defenses problems.
now this leaves us the safe picks: cole and cech. cole could pop up with the odd goal or assist but honestly the potential isn't too appealing to me. and cech poses the problem of requiring a transfer down the road to swap a GK - hardly an appealing prospect. that is unless you plan on keeping him til the winter wc though your funds can probably be better spent elsewhere (rvp, bale?, suarez, aguero, rooney? could all become viable options within the next several weeks if they aren't already and each of them takes up a considerable amount of your budget)

now onto the advantages of getting attackers - while many will point to rotation of Chelsea's attackers as a problem, in the case of this dgw I don't think it's as big of a deal as many are making it out to be. considering the fixtures which look ripe for goals as well as the potential to play twice, we can all agree that chelsea attackers are a must. while some may be concerned that Lukaku won't start both games for example, he can easily rack up a big score in just one start, not to mention how effective he was off the bench for west brom last year (let us not forget his hattrick against United off the bench along with all the others he scored off the bench). I'd be pretty happy with 1 start and one sub appearance I have to say. and let us not forget dgw's of last year where we learned that players only need one game of the dgw to do their damage - swansea the first game of their dgw are a strong reminder of that, as are liverpool in the second game of that same dgw, as was podolski in the second game of his dgw.

I can see lots of goals in both Chelsea games so loading up on 2 or even 3 attackers is a good idea. and I wouldn't be surprised to see Benteke nick one against arsenal and maybe another one against chelsea

and the biggest advantage of getting 4 attackers in my mind is what it enables you to do after the dgw in terms of transfers. if you get a dgw defender, you either have to keep them long term (which I'm not a fan of given the good defensive options at 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 and given the wide range of quality expensive attackers which I mentioned earlier) or use a transfer downgrading a defender.

on the other hand, by going with 4 dgw attackers (lukaku, benteke, hazard, and one other chelsea mid) you have the ability to instantly cash in on any bandwagons while also getting rid of players who have a blank in gw 3, not to mention it's much preferable to use transfers on attackers than on defenders in most people's minds. with 2 forwards and 2 mids you have the ability to keep the player that's the better option while still being able to trade out for this season's michu whether he's a forward or a mid. with 4 attackers you also have the option to keep one long term if you want (probably hazard) while swapping another out for the new michu, leaving you with two more attackers. downgrade one significantly and you should be able to get rvp or bale if need be.

I think whether I pick Lukaku will come down to the alternatives and what we can expect from them. If Sturridge looks like he is only going to get 30 mins, I will probably punt on Lukaku and do the transfer in GW2.

          Hazard is in regardless.

I also think Ivan should get 60 minutes or more in both games.

You're missing Ivanovic, he is a beast. He will start both games in the DGW because Azpi is well short of match fitness and would have traveled from South America. He might come on as a sub in the Villa game but thats all the game time Azpi will get. Bookmark this if you want.

I like the idea of having the flexibility of offloading to the best GW2 bandwagons the defenders have as much chance of scoring big as the mids/forwards. Nearly all defenders in that Chelsea backline also have a considerable goal/assist threat (maybe only Ashley Cole excluded) on top of probably the best CS chances in the league. I think there is definitely more of a worry with rotation in midfield and up front compared to defence too. One def, one mid, one striker for me.

Chelsea defenders are a bit cheaper than the attacking players though. Obviously this reflects their chances of playing somewhat, but the attacking chelsea players are at least 1.5m more than the defenders.

Also with 4 attackers you will need to trade at least 3 of them out before the blank (one hit and one on the bench hoping like hell that you other 7 will all start). This is a very precarious position, at least with defenders thats another player you can easily bench.

If Arsenal fail to sign anyone significant before their CL qualifier, I hope they get beat!

Wenger will never learn his lesson & simply refuses to spend money.

Almost every transfer window is used to make a profit.

I remember the relief on his face when the final whistle went on the last day of the season...

I thought he had finally realised just how lucky they were to get 4th & that he needs to invest in the team.

But here we are, 3 days before the season, spent no money & sold about 20 players.

Meanwhile Spurs have spent over 50m, still have Bale & Liverpool look as though they will be a threat for 4th place next year too.

If Arsenal's ambition is too spend the absolute minimum & set their target for just sneaking into 4th place, then changes are required.

Although you are correct, that further highlights Wengers failures in the transfer market. Trying to take a punt on risky players, on the cheap, instead of buying world class players.

I agree it is a positive thing that he is now selling them, but he needs to be buying the world class players now.

Since when has more ambition translated directly into spending an absurd amount of money on players?

I believe what Arsene Wenger has done is truly amazing and if the financial fair play rules do come in with harsh penalties not just flimsy little fines, penalties like exclusion from competition and points deductions then Arsenal will be the club to beat.

    From SSN:

If St Etienne make a firm move for Modibo Maiga, it could help West Ham manager Sam Allardyce's pursuit of Demba Ba. Several papers report that Allardyce wants to sign the Chelsea striker, with the Daily Mirror claiming West Ham must offload players in order to afford a deal for Ba

Who would get Ba if he went to West Ham?

The counter argument to this is:

        - his ownership will fluctuate heavily
        - it will be hard to hold on after 2 weeks of sub appearances and no returns and you may end up missing his hauls

I am goin out there and say this Suarez is staying malarkey is more smoke than it is flames.
The source apparently comes from a journalist in Uruguay. He tweeted the first bit about the fans as then tweeted another statement saying Suarez is looking to sign a renewal to his contract which binds him to the club.

After everything he has said it sounds like rubbish (then again he has sprouted a lot of rubbish) but seeing as he doesn't mind talking out in public I don't believe this story, yet.

That just sounds silly to me, the worst of both worlds. You don't have RVP's points but your team is damaged by the lack of investment anyway.

So what? All I care about is where I am at the end of 38.

No point, the whole idea of not having him is to reinvest the money in other season keepers who can collectively do the same/more.

Tell me about it but you will be surprised by the number of people on here in the last few weeks who plan to do that, they need to grow a pair!
