PlayON – The FFS Strategy Guide

As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Repost from last post... sorry!

What's the latest with West Ham's goalie situation, surely Jussi wouldn't be ousted after last years performances?

Good team, maybe a little too heavy at the back and I don't rate Anelka as an FPL prospect but each to their own.

I am championing picking Marshall as your back up to Migs not Boruc, reasoning below:

If you run out of luck this weekend your strikers may struggle to get in 250 mins out of a possible 360.
Midfield very strong. I would rather have strikers that are sure to play 90 mins. Lambert Benteke Aspas......to help support that midfield. Don't get me wrong, your players can cause serious damage, but only if they play!

      Hi Snowman,

At the moment you can play for real money if you are from UK, Austraila, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway and a few others. We are adding the ability to play for real money for all other geographies except the US, Hong Kong, Israel and Turkey over the next few weeks. You can play for free from anywhere in the world.

We're cutting of the team changes at 2 hours before first kick-off this year as we don't want there to be any disadvantage for someone finalising their team on a Friday afternoon - makes it a fairer game for all. Tinkering away as per usual and probably going to ruin a decent (ish) team.

    The current draft is

    Boruc Lewis
    Coleman Turner Parr Ivan Chester
    Haz Cout Wally Snod Sissoko
    Soldado Lukaku Giroud

    1m in the bank

The question is this: Double up on Arse attack with Wally/Giroud or downgrade Giroud to Kone for Everton attacking cover and upgrade 2nd keeper. Also got some worries about Parr starting. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Is it probably too dangerous to go with both Dzeko and Lukaku?

For me yes it is. Pick your poison and only punt on one as far as I am concerned. You always have the option of going with Lukaku for the double then making a hindsight choice on which one you want long term after that.

    Hi Guys,

RMT please - been struggling with the RVP decision (decided to go without)

    Foster / Boruc
    Cashley / Turner(nor) / Collins / Brayford / Yanga-Mbiwa
    Wally / Hazard / Silva / Miralles / Thomas
    Soldado / Sturridge / Lukaku

    thoughts?

Starting to think that the Chelsea DGW could be a minefield that is not worth trying to navigate.

    1. Only defenders likely to be 'nailed on' are Cole and Ivanovic. And that's open to debate with the latter. And you'd have to say that it's likely that either Hull or Villa will grab a goal.

    2. Midfield? Lottery, no idea how what Mourinho is going to do. Mata/Hazard/Oscar/Lampard all likely to be rested for some of the 180 minutes.

    3. Fernando, Demba, or Romelu? That is the question. Tempted to take a punt on Lukaku, mainly because he is the heaviest player in the league and got a hat-trick on the last day... but José could easily give him a bench role in both games.

So, in conclusion, seems it might be better to think longer term rather than loading up on Chelsea and giving yourself some headaches in GW3. Especially when the inevitable bandwagons will have started and there may be other transfers that would be more beneficial to make.

But then you're taking the risk of Lukaku scoring big and two clean sheets. Do you want to be playing catch up so early?

      Never ignore a DGW.

I expect 180 minutes from any attackers, but attackers get subbed always.

      130 minutes beats 65.

Unless Chelsea take full advantage of two easy home fixtures. I'm being optimistic about the potential the double holds.

Most here have concluded that 3 is the optimal number of Chelski for GW1.

Forget the fact it's a DGW.

      If Chelsea were playing Hull

Would hazard be a good pick?
Would cole be a good pick?
Would Lukaku be a good pick?

Three an argument to say 2 or 3 would anyway, even if the weren't playing Villa too

I agree with a lot of people here that the DGW shouldn't be ignored.

However, to your point, it shouldn't be overcapitalized to the point of hurting you come GWs 2 and 3.

And this is the problem facing many people who are squeezing in 3-4 DGW players. They commit themselves to a long road of very strict transfers that in some cases also includes benching valuable players, playing crap players, and taking point hits.

The debate isn't about if DGW players have value (which is an obvious yes). It's whether or not you're getting the most out of that value in the long run.

Finally some sense and sensibility around here 🙂

For me when picking any defender even the best case scenario will be all but wiped out by the likely hit you will later collect.

I was always picking Hazard and I will be keeping him long term and so that gives me a viable caption option safe in the knowledge that he should get a combined 90mins against weaker opposition.

I have two rock solid performers up front and so I can choose to take a punt on Lukaku if I wish as I have not also got the likes of Dzeko or Anelka and if I did then Lukaku would be a step to far to even consider.
