Mikel Arteta has been ruled out of Arsenal’s home game with Villa. Andre Villas-Boas is set to be without Gareth Bale for Spurs’ trip to Palace, where Jerome Thomas is sidelined for a couple of weeks for the hosts, Liverpool have good news on the defensive front and Southampton are still doubtful over Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw.

Our team news section has been updated on the back of the latest press conferences and will be refreshed as today unfolds – keep an eye on this and our twitter feed ahead of what is set to be a hectic next 24-hours for Fantasy managers:

Arsene Wenger will head into tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa without the influential Mikel Arteta. Speaking to the press in the last hour, the Gunners boss admitted he is uncertain when the Spaniard will return, though according to The Mail, the playmaker could be out for up to six weeks with the injury – potentially handing spot-kicks duties to Lukas Podolski and forcing Jack Wilshere into a deeper role alongside fit-again Aaron Ramsey in front of the back-four.

Although he ruled out the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Ryo Miyaichi, Wenger failed to mention Theo Walcott, Bacary Sagna or Santi Cazorla this morning. The first two had picked up minor problems on international duty, while Cazorla was late flying back from Spain’s match in Ecuador amid worries of fatigue – Fantasy managers will be optimistic the trio are fine, then, though some confirmation would have gone a long way to easing our fears as we finalise our squads.

Elsewhere in north London, Andre Villas-Boas looks set to be without Gareth Bale for Tottenham’s trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Welshman hasn’t played for three weeks due to injury and, when asked whether he would be available to face Ian Holloway’s side, Villas-Boas replied:

“No, because he’s been out injured for most of pre-season. He was involved in the games against Brentford and Swindon but not any others, for different reasons; pulled a muscle in his gluteus that prevented him from being involved for two weeks and he’s been complaining of pain in the foot. I think the most natural thing is to see him not involved against Palace.”

With Bale out of the equation, it’s possible that Gylfi Sigurdsson could tuck in behind Roberto Soldado, with Nacer Chadli on the left, if the visitors line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, though the Belgian has also been fielded in “the hole” during pre-season. Alternatively, Villas-Boas may opt for the 4-3-3 shape he preferred at Porto – a scenario that could see Paulinho as the most advanced central option, with Sandro, Mousa Dembele and new boy Etienne Capoue offering plenty dynamism in the middle of the park.

Brendan Rodgers has received some positive news ahead of Liverpool’s early kick-off with Stoke tomorrow. The Reds boss expects both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel to be fit to face the Potters, though while the Dane will return to the starting XI, Skrtel is likely to warm the bench – Kolo Toure is firmly ahead of the Slovakian in the pecking order and has started every pre-season friendly he has been available for.

Martin Jol will hand Alex Kacaniklic a late fitness test as Fulham make their way to Sunderland. The Cottagers boss has admitted Adel Taarabt’s fitness is still an issue and with the Moroccan only likely to make the bench, Kacaniklic could be in line for a starting role on the left wing providing he gets the all clear after impressing in pre-season, according to his manager.

Southampton full-back pair Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both remain doubts for tomorrow’s trip to West Brom. Speaking to the press yesterday, Mauricio Pochettino revealed the pair are making good progress:

“We’re very happy because Luke has responded well throughout the week. With one training session left tomorrow, I think he could be in the 18 players called up for the game against West Brom. Clyney has been recovering from a little niggle that he’s had since Austria. [His involvement] depends on the training session tomorrow but, if he’s not in the group for West Brom, he’ll be most probably available for the game after. “

Clyne pulled out of the midweek England Under 21 game against Scotland after being withdrawn in last weekend’s friendly win over Real Sociedad, while Clyne has yet to feature over the summer. Pochettino may turn to Danny Fox and Callum Chambers in the event of any potential absence and the Saints boss also conceded he has yet to assess the fitness of Gaston Ramirez and Maya Yoshida, who both featured in the Japan v Uruguay friendly on Wednesday.

Michael Laudrup was awaiting the return of Wilfried Bony yesterday, after Swansea’s new forward turned out for Ivory Coast against Mexico in New Jersey in the early hours of Thursday morning. Laudrup – who will be without Jonathan de Guzman due to concussion – seemed far from happy with the situation as he prepares for tomorrow evening’s match against United:

“Bony will be back late on Thursday with jetlag, which is not great. To play for your country is great and the club should be proud of all our internationals, but having a friendly three days before the start of the season is strange. This is the last year when it will happen fortunately. That’s an intelligent decision.”

Ian Holloway handed Fantasy managers a heads-up after announcing Jerome Thomas is ruled out for two weeks with the ankle problem that saw him limp off against Lazio after just 22 minutes last weekend. Yannick Bolasie added to Palace’s boss with a hamstring injury that will keep him out “for some time”, according to the Eagles boss. With his options on the flanks limited, Holloway could keep faith with Jonny Williams as an option out wide – fortunately, he comes in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same price as Thomas, and looks secure for game time in light of yesterday’s news.

Hi all. Me again. Apologies for the sluggishness this morning. We solved it. The Scout Picks was making just so many requests to the DB it was slowing down the page loads and causing timeouts. We've removed and I'll use a flat image for those this evening.

We've been getting unprecedented traffic this morning - probably caused by the Metro article this morning and the FPL Scout article going up this morning.

Hopefully we'll be ok. There's a pretty large number of servers keeping the site running. A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes in the last 24-48 hours (and long before that too) and we're discussing what steps to take next. It's a continual process of improvement.

Hey mark – have you considered ajax loading the paginated comments? I think it would save a lot of load on your server because every time you click a new comment page we are loading the rest of the page all over again which strikes me as very inefficient.

Also if you used Disqus to handle the comments here you would relieve the load on your database tremendously. You could still have users etc.

We've considered it, yes. But there's a lot of tie up between our user accounts and the comment system that can't (for security reasons) happen over an AJAX request.

We did consider disqus as well as a number of other systems.

Hmm – what sort of security reasons? Can't think of the risk myself, would be interested to know what it is. If there are some risks, I'm sure you could work around it. Seems like it would be worth it. Apart from relieving the load on your database, it's a much better user experience to have the comments load in the same spot rather than reload the page all over again.

Partrice, feel free to email me via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you like and we can discuss further. Of course there are always ways to achieve an AJAX load but there are a number of factors to consider.

For our volume of comments, Disqus would just not be an option. Their costs ramp up considerably for high traffic sites.

Besides - Disqus also take some ownership of your user database and we'd have little control on adding new features.

That's fair enough regarding Disqus – I didn't know it got that expensive. Still, I'd be interested to see the savings you could potentially make on your hosting bills and not to mention the Disqus experience is about 1000 times better than this.

So.. Silva or Dzeko / Negredo as City coverage for the next 4 GWs?

I will have Soldado Sturridge and Dzeko by GW 3,
Well no Dzeko if I go with Silva.

But whos best for GW 1 only?

Soldado - due a debut goal?
    Sturridge - main goal threat
Dzeko - on form and easy.

Shameless repost, got no response couple of pages back.

Hey guys. Can anyone help me out with some thoughts on this bunch? Starting to come close to finalizing the team. Decided not to go with RVP as I think there could be too many good options up front and I'd like to be more flexible for now.

    Mignolet Marshall
    Terry Mertesacker Collins MTurner Brayford
Haz (c) Walcott Mirallas Nolan Kim
    Giroud Benteke Lukaku

Terry is my punt for the DGW with Luiz struggling for fitness and Cahill being below par in the games I've seen pre-season. Left some in the bank (1.5M), again for flexibility, hoping I won't have to take any hits. Can get pretty much any striker pretty easily (Sturr, Soldado, Negredo).

I really like it and I like your plan with the extra funds for another striker. With those funds you can easily do Benteke & Lukaku to Sturridge & Soldado/Negredo which is a great plan.

      I love the Terry punt.

The rest looks solid as long as Collins is fit to start the season then I think you have a good team.

Why won't he. If there's one game of the three in 8 I don't see him starting, it's the United one.

Because they've also got Luiz, Cahill and Ivanovic who all play centre back, he only got 950 minutes last year.

It is my day off yes 😀 But seriously, 10.5m for Rooney! Not saying he should be in your team GW1 but when the transfer window closes whether he's at Utd or Chelsea he'll be hugely under-priced

Before Ferguson messed him about he was easily an alternative RVP even when playing a second striker role. He'll get +200pts comfortably

    Which one is better:

    a) Hazard - Walcott - Mirallas - Brady - 4.5 mid

    OR

    b) Hazard - Walcott - Snodgrass/Adam Johnson - Brady - 5.0 or 5.5 mid rotate with Brady.

Am I mad for having silva and Dzeko and no Pool coverage?

Sturridge isn't fully fit and I can't see the value of spending 9mil on coutinho..

I've got Toure/Coutinho and thinking whether to do Lukaku to Studge in GW2 ... 3 x LFC is too much aint it? That's swapping out Migs for Szcynessssy also

Got 1 mil in the bank - but hell bent on bringing Studge in for the Villa game. :/

    Mignolet (Davis)
Ivanovic - Koscielny - Collins (Murner - Chester)
Hazard - Walcott - Mirallas - Snodgrass (Morrison)
    Soldado - Sturridge - Lukaku

Have £1.5m left in the bank - spend now, or save for post-GW1 changes (e.g. Lukaku -> Negredo)?

Hmm... always tough when trying to squeeze in RVP, but what stands out to me is that you have four 5M+ defenders who could be downgraded to improve your midfield. I assume you'll be rotating Schneiderlin and Kim? Maybe upgrade Kim to Noble and rock a WHU/SOU rotation? Like that you were able to squeeze in Soldado, from the clips I've seen that guy is a classy striker.
