The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

Triggers, care to give some advice on my transfers?

    Team:

    Mignolet Lewis

Mertesacker Ivanovic M. Turner Chester B. Turner

    Hazard Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Ravel

    Soldado Lukaku Dzeko

    £ 1.0 in the bank

Willing to do Ivanovic-> Coleman and Lukaku -> Lambert for a 4 point hit. Is it worth it in your opinion or are there better options?

I'd prefer Sturridge to Lambert, even with Coutinho, but it's probably too early in the season to know who the real studs are yet.

Soldado looked promising today but i think Tottenham need a better player in the hole than Siggy.
Siggy ok but all he does is shoot when he gets the ball. They need a playmaker of the Silva variety.

Will probably capt Soldado but not very happy about it, just hoping Swansea are worn out after their european game

Right?! Siggy blew a sitter Soldado laid on and looked a bit sluggish on the whole! As to Swansea's back line, I'd expect them to be tired but would think Laudrup won't field such a weak line-up after the massive misfire that he threw out against Utd.

I think spurs will be better for the run, Soldado could have easily scored another and was denied an assist by Siggy side footing past the bottom corner.

Siggy was ok, to be fair Palace closed out in the midfield really really well. The major concern for Soldado is the flanks, Lennon is so very good at getting by his defender but so very poor at delivering quality ball. Meanwhile Chadi looks like he has eyes only for goal, cant remember him making a decent cross all day

So it looks like in games with clean sheets defenders get a good share of the BAPS. Interesting. Under the old system, assisters and shots on target would have dominated the BAPS in those low scoring games.

Yes , even with 2 0 like in the Chelsea game , all those defenders (except mine) getting the bonus points.
A clean sheet is now worth 5 or 6 points to the main central defender

    Match Ratings for Cardiff
    http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/rate-cardiff-city-players-v-5746155

Now i believe this to be massively inflated.
    here's mine

Marshall, 5, had too much pressure on him, not his fault he gave up so many chances, although did look as though he could have better foot work

Connolly, 4, poor, looked slow and provided very little for the side. (Should be replaced by either McNaughton, who i'm sure would have played a better game on Jarvis who ripped Connolly and Cardiff as a whole to pieces. Perhaps a victim of the match up, but how often do sides play slow wide men....

Turner, 2, slow and out of position, looked very very poor, will be cringing if he's selected next week. Perhaps Hudson or even moving Connolly to the inside would be an improvement.... I'm not sure if we can compete with such poor options at centre-half

Caulker, 6, Showed why he was such a big signing, looked quick and switched on and attempted to get Turner and the rest of the back 4 up and about, looked undoubtedly up to the challenge.

John, 4, was under too much pressure, is only 18 years old, although that doesn't justify his performance. looked a bit nervous and a bit over cautious at times, while at others giving up a lapse as west ham controlled the game. (for around 55minutes of the match we looked pinned to our defensive third)

Medel, 7, a shining beacon in a dull performance from the boys. great clearances, had quality and looks like he has the intensity necessary to win games and hopefully maintain our place in the premier league.

Gunnarson, 4/5, average..... not bad, but not overly impressive, combative and tough which is nice.

Pete whittingham, 6, looked a lot safer in possession than most (including many of the west ham, players) dangerous flicks and what not make him a decent pick in fantasy.

Kim Bo, 5, he has the touch and skill level, just needs a little time to adjust to the prem league, not just the level of player, but the physicality and atmosphere as well, West ham away was a rough introduction for him.

Craig Bellamy, 5, disappointing considering his experience, but at the same time, it was not at his fault that we went down 0-2.

Campbell,4, Poor, wouldn't bother with him this year, looked sloppy a few touches went well away from him.

    SUBs:
Maynard and Rudy got a run out
and Mutch came on for all of 10 seconds

Malky, 4, needed to do more, but at the same time, not his fault we didn't perform much better, he had the systems in placed for us to play a reasonably attractive and potentially succesful style of play.

    NEXT week changes
    hoping
Connolly and Turner should be benched in favor of Brayford (or McNaughton) and Hudson.
    Perhaps
inject Cornelius in at the expense of Campbell
maybe find someone else to enter the midfield to add some depth... but, it was mainly our defense and fwds who struggled.

      *If Cornelius is fit,
we lacked passion and drive to be totally honest. Perhaps a genuine presence (From all accounts Cornelius fits the build) could really help our success

Admittedly i see the Man C match as a "Free" shot at a point or 3, i don't think we'll be much trouble for a quality side

Thanks for the up votes lads,
I was predicting 15th, but anything out of relegation should be considered a success!

Declan looks like has a future, I feel he fell victim to the games' atmosphere and physicality. ideally would've liked him to be introduced in a home game as a sub... But Suspension meant he had to have a run. I'm by no means writing him off

Osvaldo but it's definitely a wait and see. The general opinion of Saints fans seems to be that Rickie's lack of pace will see him drop back into the hole and then out altogether at some point. Osvaldo is tipped to start on the right to ease him into the team before he takes the central spot.

      Hey Guys,

There was some mild concern amonst saints fans that Osvaldo might disrupt the current fairytail that is Rickie Lambert esepcially as the new guy seems to have an ego. The following article has helped ease some of those concerns, seems Osvaldo is adept at playing as part of a front 3 or out wide in a 4-2-3-1 system (mo pos prefered option). Given Rickie cant play any other role but target man and you're not going to spend $15m and have a lad sit on the bench it looks likely that it might be Jrod/lall/Ram that make way but both Rickie and Pablo with both get game time rather than canablising each others.

      http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1738942-pablo-osvaldo-to-southampton-roma-star-would-be-a-great-tactical-fit

Only 39 points from my players but interestingly not a single i already regret owning. More of frustated with the likes of Hazard and Lukaku - but there's still hope with them vs AVL - and Turner, perhaps.

I'm sure we have to be patience with the players that we got if they had a decent game already, unless they are no-shows and absolutely below-par then i can understand the need of losing them early.

So, the plan is still i) to hold fire on WCing until after GW3, and ii) to get rid of Lukaku this week.

With just the next 2 fixtures to bear in mind then, loading up on MCY could be a great play (car, HUL) even if their players come with some uncertainty. I can only afford 8m or less strikers for Lukaku's replacement, so that brings Dzeko into the mix from MCY. Other alternatives look like being Lambert (in form, great fixtures, on set pieces) or Berbatov (at home to a patched up Arsenal defence, on pens).

So, which striker to go for? Currently I'm on Lambert, but depending on how things go tonight that could easily become Dzeko....

    Boruc
    Zaba, Toure, Terry
    Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Mirallas
    Sturridge, Soldado, Lukaku

    Davis, Morrison, Chester, Ward

Lambo for me. but depends on how confident you are of Dzecko playing.

Don't think Berba's gonna do it ..even against our Frankenstein defence!

Quite a few options. Strikers is where it is.

      RVP
      Soldado
      Berba
      ManCity striker (Negredo)
      Lambert

Agreed. Sturridge still a decent option (mainly because he is the most selfish player in the league), but Villa will be flying after the w/e and I think Soldado/RVP and the right MCY striker are better options.

If you can pick the right MCY forward then probably him (Negredo/Dzeko/Aguero), otherwise Soldado, Sturridge or RVP for a safer option.

What do all the other Arsenal fans out there think? If Wenger fails to bring in 2-3 marquee signings and 3-4 squad players then this window has been a disaster.

Whatever they do, they need to act quick. They need some players ready by as early as next weekend or the following one.

With their current squad, I can't see them stringing a win in either game.

If Wenger had just paid the 35m fee for Higuain and was quicker to snap up Gustavo (Wolfsburg got him), I'm sure we wouldn't be in the state we are in now. I highly doubt a team with Higuain leading the front line and Gustavo taking out legs in midfield will lose 3-1 to Villa.

he'll bring in one or two high quality signing maximum

draw with Fenerbache, beat Fulham by some absurd score (guessing at least 5 goals), get you feeling good, then lose to Spurs at home, rinse & repeat hope & anger

He keeps saying there's nobody to buy!!

Arsenal should have someone else responsible for transfers.

Last season, it looked like even the Board were getting frustrated by publicly stating that funds are available.

I wish he stop banging on about the 'beleef' and SPEND!!!

No love for Joe Cole for that kind of performance?

Currently i have Nolan (my only big performer this week), but i think Hazard to Joe Cole, though it sounds too knee-jerky, is the best move for me for several reasons:

    1. WHU fixtures are very good that i think doubling on up their attacker is not a bad idea. Nolan & J.Cole are both nailed on, and if you watch the former's goal, he was in the striker's position while the latter is on some set-pieces as well.

    2. 2.5 itb + 4.0 from this transfer allows me to do direct Lukaku to RVP transfer later on.

    3. If i do Nolan > other on-form midfielder (if any) at his price range (eg. HBA, snod, SUN mids, kdb), i'd still have a WHU attacker.

    4. I tend to play with 3 strikers and WHU mid rotates perfectly with Kim, my 5th midfielder.

    5. i used to think that Hazard is a season keeper, but after watching the game yesterday, i think CHE mid is too much a minefield for selection and he can be so frustrating to own when he's off form. At 9.5m, i expect my player to be the key player in his team (Wally, Cout, etc.).

I know not many people will consider this, but i think players who have form + fixtures should be considered highly, despite his old age. Hey, even Ryan Giggs is not a bad shout now at 5.5m 😉

      no love?

he's 2nd most popular mid-fielder to transfer into after barkley

that's ridiculous love for good ol' joe cole

the last time he played more than 1000 minutes in a season was 09/10

the last time he played more than 1300 minutes in a season was 07/08

      love for joe cole indeed

I know that, i'm thinking all those trannies are made by casuals, but not enough mention here as a consideration, that's what i thought.

yep, his prime may have passed, but he has fixtures and probably form (since pre-season btw), so i think he's worth looking at.
