Arsenal’s in-form Olivier Giroud done the business for us last week, though the surprise omission of Adel Taarabt from Fulham’s home clash with West Brom proved a bitter blow. We cast an eye over this week’s PlayON price list and get scouting in search of bargains once again.

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a seasoned player, read on for our selection of early weekend targets…

Gameweek 5 Picks

Goalkeeper – Boaz Myhill
One of only two sub 8.0m priced keepers definitely in line to start this weekend, the Baggies man welcomes basement-dwellers Sunderland to the Hawthorns as Steve Clarke’s side go in search of their first win of the season. Coming in at just 7.6m in PlayON, Myhill is substantially cheaper than any of his defensive team-mates – Liam Ridgewell is the least expensive of the back-four at 10.2m – and has save points to fall back on if he does concede. Given that the Black Cats have scored three times in four games, though, a second clean sheet of the season could well be on the cards for the midlands outfit.

Defender – David Luiz
The Portuguese centre-half has started each of Chelsea’s previous three games across all competitions since recovering from a hamstring injury late last month. A home derby with injury-hit Fulham affords Jose Mourinho’s side the chance to recover from back-to-back defeats and Luiz’s eye for a long-range effort could well be set to trouble the visitors at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. Priced at just 8.3m this week by PlayON, Luiz is far more budget-friendly than any of his fellow Blues defenders and looks well worth a punt. Alternatively, Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna comes in at 8.4m ahead of a home clash with Stoke, while Liverpool’s Andre Wisdom also looks strong value. Priced at just 7.8m, he got the nod for the right-back slot at Swansea last Monday and will be hoping to retain his starting berth as goal-shy Southampton roll up to Anfield.

Midfielder – Yohan Cabaye
Re-installed to the Newcastle starting XI last weekend, the Frenchman’s presence at the heart of the Magpies’ midfield was fundamental to Alan Pardew’s switch from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3. Cabaye’s set-piece duties and creativity will be crucial for the Tyneside team this weekend as Hull make their way to St James’ Park – priced at a bargain 6.5m this week, he looks a cut-price gem as the hosts aim for a third straight win. Stephane Sessegnon is another budget option here. Priced at just 6.8m, West Brom’s record signing is poised to make his debut against former club Sunderland, whilst Norwich playmaker Robert Snodgrass has slipped to 7.7m ahead of a home showdown with Aston Villa.

Forward – Wayne Rooney
Three goals in two games since returning from a head wound highlights the United forward’s form ahead of Sunday’s all-Manchester showdown. Handed a role alongside Robin Van Persie up front by David Moyes, Rooney seems to have a renewed vigour to his game and, with confidence flourishing under the guidance of his former Everton mentor, could be the man to make the difference as the champions take a trip to the Etihad. At 11.5m he’s far from cheap but, when it comes to derbies, Rooney has a tendency to deliver. For those willing to take a punt, Romelu Lukaku is now down to 9.0m and looks in line for his Everton debut – he faces a tough time of it away to West Ham, though.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like up to 2 hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 tomorrow) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 69% win rate so far!

Facebook £100

In addition to guaranteeing a £1,000 pot this week, PlayON is also running a competition on its Facebook page – “Guess how much Van Persie costs on PlayON this week”? Just answer their Facebook poll with how much he costs and one correct reply wins £100 of free credit – more Facebook promotions on the way from PlayON over the season too.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Is RVP essential or not. Argggh

Its doing my head in now....

My closest rivals in my ML have RVP as do I at the moment. My team looks so much more balanced without him.

Some weeks it will spectacularly back fire not having him but in the long run i think the more balanced team without will come out on top.

The no balance RVP team is an absolute myth. I had quite a nicely balanced RVP team as you have. I have however decided to go without him for the next 2-3 weeks just to see how this Rooney partnership will affect him whilst giving me three good alternatives upfront while I wait

Yes you can get him in without gimping your team as much as people might think. Here is my RVP team:

        Mignolet | Boruc

        Vertonghen | Ferdinand | Zabaleta | Wilson | Chester

        Walcott | Michu | Barkley | Lucas | Ramsey

I still think your midfield is weak though...

              Ramsey?
              Lucas? Weak
              Barkley? Weak

You could have Benteke, Eriksen and Barfa instead of

              RVP, Lucas and Barkley

I personally don't have RVP in my team and I'm not sure I agree with your analysis of the midfield, apart from Lucas.

Both Ramsey and Barkley are playing in attacking positions and are capable of scoring goals or getting assists.

I could also swap Vertonghen for Dawson and Zabaleta to Koscielny|Ferdinand which would free up 2.8/9 million and then upgrade Lucas to Redmond [better bench option] and Ramsey to Eriksen and still keep RVP.

Ramesy wont be in the team for long....

Cazorla will come into the team as will Arteta when fit.

                  No place for Ramsey.

Barkley will also be dropped soon when gibson returns.

                  Both poor choices

I agree with you about Ramsey being at risk of not being selected when everyone is fit but he is guaranteed at the minute and great value. When the time comes he needs replaced then it is a simple transfer away.

I'm not sure Martinez will drop Barkley when Gibson is back [Moyes would have for sure] as he gives youth a chance as he has proven at Wigan. Anyway if Gibson does take his spot then I simply swap them with a simple transfer.

Add to that, if both these guys keep performing then their price will rise for sure and I will have added value to the team.

Time will tell, but the way I see it is: there are a lot of players capable of monster scores (particularly Wally, Benteke, Michu, Suarez and GIroud in my eyes). What differentiates RVP from the rest is that he's far for likely to get such scores on a regular basis, and the assumption is you are going to have C on him, so when you do, you essentially have 2 monster scores, whereas others have presumably 0 monster scores. Therefore, you can almost match their entire team score with 10 players left to play.

Having said that, he hasn't quite looked like RVP of the past few years (though his finishing has been just short of very sound most of the time) and I think we can attribute his mediocre performance FPL-wise to a poor performing Man U. I'd give Man U time and he should come good.

For now, he's not essential, but he could be essential at any moment, and I hope that's sooner rather than later.

And, to be honest, people go on about non-RVP teams being more balanced but my RVP team would be better than my non-RVP team (as I wouldn't have picked players like HBA, Coleman or Collins).

At the moment I would not say he is essential as there are a number of better options who have a better PPM.

However, I think it is important to have your team set up so you can get him in relatively quickly if he becomes essential.

Really really tempted to go with Ben Arfa, but currently on Walcott vs. Stoke at home. Both could blank though as they are both facing fairly solid defences even if at home.

But most games I've seen Giroud has been really instrumental, they are playing of him and around him. A lot is going through him, he is putting people through, he has been with Walcott, Walcott just aint been finishing though.

Lolarov entered the side before Clichy's injury, after the disaster 3-2 defeat to Cardiff. Clichy sat on the bench for the 2-0 Hull win, then got injured for Stoke and Kolarov has picked up 3 CS in 3 games (Hull, Stoke, Plzen). Wouldn't assume Clichy is replacing him.

Yeah Moses is a relatively short term option, but think until Coutinho's back he'll play most games.

I take it you need to do Lolarov > Wilson to do the Nani upgrade?

If so, I can see the logic and looks good moves to me.

Also replace JWP as he is guaranteed starts. You can also swap Vidic or Kos for Dawson to get a little extra cash. Would also get rid of HBA as he has shit fixtures after this week but nothing wrong having him this week if you are going to transfer him out next week.

1 FT, 0.2 in the bank.

    GK: Mignolet (4.0)
DEF: Vidic, Ivanovic, Collins (Hangeland) (Turner)
MID: Walcott, Ward-Prowse , HBA, Brady (Hernández)

Could do with a quick bit of help regarding the price drop mechanism...

Does a player need double the price drop threshold for a second drop in one week? So Aguero - having fallen already this week - is approaching 50% towards another drop. If he does get to 50% as of 11:30 on Saturday, will that then be 100% for a drop in the new week?

    If that makes sense....

Nope. Neither rise nor fall thresholds double or triple any more (think that was the case many seasons ago).

Excellent. So Aguero isn't at any real risk of dropping then?

Shouldn't be! TFPL (the more reliable atm) has him on -41% having only fallen 14% today. Still just under 12 hours to go to price changes on the busiest night of the week, so would monitor, but it would take a heck of an acceleration now.

If he's not lower than -80% by midnight you should be safe.

Which one would you play? I am leaning towards the home player.

    A. B. Turner (TOT)
    B. J. Chester (new)

Flip a coin. Though the home defender is usually the safer bet.
