Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's last chance saloon for 3 of my players this weekend. I'm saving my transfer and giving Lamps, Soldado & RVP another chance to wow me.

If they fail then I can see all 3 leaving my team for a 4pter next week

    Mignolet
    Zabaleta - Mert - Clyne
    Michu - Eriksen - Lamps - Barkley
    Sturridge - Giroud - Rooney

Bench: Marshall - Kim - Murner - Ward

    bank: 2M

I generally can see 3 options here:

    1. I go like it's written here and save my FT as planned to have 2 FTs during international break.

    2. I transfer Walker in for Murner and play 4-3-3 with Barkley benched for his game at Etihad.

    3. I transfer Ramsey in for either Lampard or Kim and play him with Kim / Barkley on the bench.

    What do you think, guys?

Time to lose Kim (says another Kim owner who keeps using up transfers elsewhere). What to do depends if you have other plans for the money. Ramsey is killing non-owners and could cover your fear of missing out tho people still struggling with his transformation and whether it can last. If no other obvious moves that route seems sensible. Otherwise amalfitano keeps all but 0.2 of your cash reserve with what looks to be a bargain who will rise in price, cover your bench for injuries and rotation and get the nod over Barkley this week

There's a guy who is literally one of the worst FPL players I have ever come across, its an ongoing joke among us how bad he is.

He was a big fan of the classic 5-4-1 in recent years.

This year pretty much every player he owns is the highest owned in FPL.(think barkleys, ramseys, yaya's etc). He currently tops the minileague.

I think this sums up this season.

I think what has caused a lot of people to slip this season is the unwillingness to change.

Sticking with RVP when there are better options
Sticking with premium mids and not upgrading defence
Not being prepared to change formation.

With some tales of woe from captaining Baines I got to thinking, what is the likelihood of a defender scoring 2 weeks in a row? I know Baines is on penos and frees and is a different kettle of fish, but it still got me interested.

It can't be that often that a defender goes on a streak and who do you remember? I remember Vermaelen banging a few in succession before he got injured a couple of years ago.

He scored 5 goals last year so if you say there's a random chance of him scoring in any game then it is a 0.017% chance for Baines scoring goals in consecutive games.

If he scores in 5 matches out of 38, and these results are independent of each other, then the chance of two of these goal-scoring matches being consecutive is actually greater than 4/37, which is 10.8%.

In practice, however, the facts that most players score more goals at home than away, that home and away matches often alternate, and that the opposition will be more aware of his goal threat in the following match, will mean that the results will not be entirely independent.
