Wayne Rooney is expected to be back for the weekend trip to Sunderland after missing United’s draw against Shakhtar. Alvaro Negredo climbs off the bench to notch City’s consolation as they are taken apart by Bayern. Fernando Torres should return in three weeks from a knee injury, Ashley Williams remains sidelined for Swansea’s Europa League match this evening, while Andre Villas-Boas hands Jan Vertonghen and Paulinho the night off as Spurs make their way to Russia:

Rooney Shin Absence for United

David Moyes recalled the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia and Robin Van Persie for United’s trip to Shakhtar after ringing the changes for Saturday’s loss to West Brom. Whilst the Dutchman’s indifferent season continued with another blank, Danny Welbeck was the goal hero as the Red Devils registered a crucial point against the Ukranian champions.

Most of the talk centred around Wayne Rooney, however, who missed out after picking up a training ground injury – with United set to travel to basement-dwellers Sunderland on Saturday evening, Moyes assured the media he expects the in-form forward to be available to face the Black Cats:

“Wayne will be OK for Saturday. He clashed shins with Danny Welbeck in training and at a push we could have risked him, but in the end we decided not to. My plan wasn’t to use Wayne tonight anyway. He picked up a crack in the shin and it has swollen up. He was going to be on the bench, but he was not able to make it.”

The Scout Says: Rooney’s Fantasy owners will breathe a sigh of relief after a somewhat uncharacteristically candid Moyes eased fears of any potential lay-off. Having notched in three successive league games (compared to Van Persie’s single converted spot-kick since Gameweek 1) Rooney has taken up the mantle as United’s most potent striker under his former Everton mentor so far. With games against Stoke, Southampton and Fulham to follow the Sunderland clash, his potential for points will surely bring plenty more investment his way – current owners and would-be suitors will he hoping for further confirmation of his availability at Friday afternoon’s press conference to quash any concerns completely and get the bandwagon back on track.

Negredo Strike Scant Consolation for City

Manuel Pellegrini welcomed back Sergio Aguero to the City starting line-up last night but watched on as his side were dismantled by reigning champions Bayern. The Argentine was surprisingly partnered by Edin Dzeko as Alvaro Negredo was omitted from the first XI but the latter once again demonstrated his eye for goal by emerging from the bench to grab the hosts’ only strike in the 3-1 defeat. David Silva also appeared as a sub to signal his comeback from injury, while Pellegrini’s decision to opt for Micah Richards over Pablo Zabaleta at right-back raised an eyebrow. After the game, the Chilean defended his decision to opt for Richards, who has rarely played this season after a hamstring injury curtailed his game time:

“I think Micah Richards played very well in the game, Ribery is a very dangerous winger and I don’t think that Ribery was the key factor to win the game today, so I don’t think Micah has responsibility for the score.”

The Scout Says: Whilst the return of Aguero and Silva is a welcome boost to Pellegrini, his decision to drop both Negredo and Zabaleta for such a vital game suggests the pecking order is yet to be established. Having started each of the last three league games, Negredo seemed to have edged ahead of Dzeko after beginning the campaign from the bench but it’s clear Pellegrini’s intentions up front remain difficult to predict, with Aguero the nearest to nailed-on of any frontman. The call to drop Zabaleta was undoubtedly huge, though. The Argentine has played every minute of the league season so far and is owned by almost 33% of FPL managers – the most popular defender in the game – but last night’s team sheet suggest Richards could be set to steal some game time in the right-back berth. Having been benched last night, Zabaleta will surely now return to the XI for Saturday’s home game against Everton – if he’s dropped for that one, though, many will be weighing up their options.

Torres Knee Relief for Chelsea

Chelsea were handed some positive injury news last night after scans revealed Fernando Torres will only be sidelined for three weeks with the knee injury sustained against Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday evening.

The Scout Says: Having lasted only 10 minutes of the 4-0 win in Romania, fears were building that the Spaniard was set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Last night’s prognosis is likely to ensure rest and rotation remains firmly in place up front at the Bridge, then – from a Fantasy perspective, a lengthy injury absence would have been a significant boost to Samuel Eto’o’s prospects given that Jose Mourinho seems wholly unconvinced by Demba Ba. If Torres (who is suspended for this week’s Norwich clash anyway) returns on schedule, he will be back in contention for the Gameweek 9 home clash against City, with Eto’o only secure for the previous week’s home game against Cardiff before his fellow forward is once again available for selection.

Mata Determined to Nail Down Regular Role

Juan Mata has spoken of his intentions to finally clinch a spot in Jose Mourinho’s first XI this term. Discussing his manager’s call to add more defensive work to his game, the Spaniard admitted:

“I have to do this. I will try to improve, score goals, assist and do what I have to do. I’m not the kind of man that gets down. I just keep going, train well and prepare for every game. It’s important to play with the ball and without the ball, but I’m very happy and looking forward to playing a lot of games throughout the season.”

The Scout Says: After earning his manager’s praise for his displays against Spurs and Steaua Bucharest, Mata is finally being afforded the platform to demonstrate the sort of form that produced 162 and 212 points over the last couple of FPL seasons respectively. Down to just 9.6 and with an ownership now under 5%, he approaches the second international break as a real differential – with a home clash against City in Gameweek 9 arguably the only difficult game in the next 10 for Mourinho’s side, Mata could be set to offer an explosive option in our five-man midfields if he continues to adhere to his manager’s demands.

Vertonghen and Paulinho Given Night Off

Andre Villas-Boas has rested Jan Vertonghen and Paulinho for Tottenham’s clash with Anzhi this evening. The duo will skip the trip to Russia along with injured quartet Aaron Lennon, Emmanuel Adebayor, Aaron Lennon and Danny Rose, though the latter is reported to be on course for a return to action in Sunday’s home clash against West Ham.

The Scout Says: The news will be somewhat reassuring for both players’ owners ahead of the weekend match. With Younes Kaboul fit again and Vlad Chiriches offering options in central defence, Villas-Boas is clearly keen to give his star defender the occasional break – Vertonghen, along with Paulinho, is one of only four outfield players to have managed every minute of the league season so far for Spurs. In a campaign where many of the other title contenders have already been hit hard by rotation, it’s somewhat pleasing for Fantasy managers to see Villas-Boas clearly prioritise the duo’s game time in the league over cup ties.

Williams Still Sidelined for Swans

Michael Laudrup has confirmed Ashley Williams will miss Swansea’s Europa League game against St Gallen this evening. Pablo Hernandez is expected to miss out again for the Welsh side, while Angel Rangel remains a doubt with the ankle injury that forced him out of the weekend clash against Arsenal.

The Scout Says: The centre-half has now missed three in a row in all competitions with the problem and with Laudrup again calling on Wales boss Chris Coleman to be cautious with Williams’ game time over the upcoming internationals, it may well be that he chooses to leave the player out of this week’s trip to Southampton. A rest over the international period, however, could prove hugely beneficial to Williams and bring him back onto the radar as the Swans prepare for an eye-catching run of fixture. With a schedule that reads (SUN, WHM, car, STO, ful) from Gameweek 8 onwards, investment in Laudrup’s side seems a viable tactic and Williams (now down to 4.9 in FPL) would surely be targeted by many if he’s given time to rest and recuperate.

Clarke Praise for Amalfitano

West Brom boss Steve Clarke was full of compliments for in-form midfielder Morgan Amalfitano yesterday.

“Morgan’s come in and done great..When you come from a different league sometimes it can take a bit of time to find your feet. But he’s hit the ground running, which is good for us and good for Morgan. If you watched him play at Marseille you would understand why he has settled so quickly into English football because he works ever so hard in games. And I think in the English Premier League you have to have players who are prepared to work really hard. Morgan has always shown that appetite for the game.”

The Scout Says: The on-loan midfielder has made an instant impact upon his arrival from Marseille. The architect behind the Baggies 2-1 win at Old Trafford with a goal and assist, Amalfitano has now notched in both his 90-minute appearances for the midlands club and has racked up 24 points in just three games. Although his form is flourishing, the upcoming schedule is proving to be a deterrent for most – with Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the next five, in addition to a derby against Stoke, he remains firmly under the Fantasy radar and, with a current ownership of less than 2%, looks a real differential option right now.

Mirallas Doubtful for Weekend

Roberto Martinez has given Fantasy managers a heads-up in his early-morning press conference today. The Everton boss has admitted Kevin Mirallas’ chances are no more than “50-50” after the Belgian was forced off with an ankle complaint against Newcastle on Monday, whilst Darron Gibson is a doubt and Steve Pienaar is again likely to miss out.

The Scout Says: Mirallas’ potential absence is a real blow for the Toffees after an upturn in form earned him an assist in each of the last two Gameweeks. With Pienaar sidelined, the Toffees boss (who is without loanee Gareth Barry against his parent club) could roll up to the Etihad without either of his first-choice wide men and – providing Gibson is fit, Leon Osman should continue on the left again, while Steven Naismith and on-loan Gerard Deulofeu could battle it out for a spot on the opposite flank, though Arouna Kone was an unused sub against the Magpies and could also stake a claim.

Top 5 players team value and hit count

I’ve been having a look at the top five overall in the FPL game to see what their team value is and how many hits they’ve taken to achieve their high rankings.

Here’s what I’ve found. Only two of the five have taken hits and in both cases it was just one.

The average team value of the top 5 is 104m (103.98 but I’ve rounded up) The highest is 105.3, the lowest 102.9.

Also just two out of the five have played their wildcard.

In my opinion this is the kind of team value we should be aiming for at the moment. Also backs up my case for taking as few hits as possible.

I think you're probably right but looking at the top five at this point is very vulnerable to the old monkeys and typewriters argument.

For every player in the top 100 who hasn't taken hits, there are a thousand in the bottom million. They're just the ones who happened to start with enough of the players who have done well so far.

They are up there as they had the high scoring players already and didn't need to take hits to get them. It's also why they have high TV. It doesn't, in any way, serve as proof that hits are bad.

Last year at gameweek 38 I did a similar thing with the top 10....most took between 7-10 hits. I'll wager that'll be the same again this year.

There will be the odd player who takes 15-20 hits that will do well over a season, but its not the norm.

Very true. Last year's winner played his Wildcard in GW2 and many argued that this was therefore a good strategy to try this time, but it was clearly a case of correlation rather than causation.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way though...They are up there coz they were "lucky" enough to own/buy the highest scoring players from the start. Those players did well and we(the sheep) followed resulting in those players prices(and their TV) going thru the roof.

It's like looking at the top players and saying none of them own Rvp.

It's obvious. That's why they are up at the top.

Partially true although have a look at their transfers. For example the no.5 guy started with Bent and Hazard, which is pretty unlucky, and has since got in Giroud and Lukaku.

The world number one started with RVP, Morrison, Hazard Hoolahan and Gerrard and has since used his wildcard wisely. He got 'lucky' with Coleman but I'd hardly say he overall had the top players from the start.

No seriously, I just think it's a waste of time to look at "trends" up top of the overall ranking. It's kind of obvious what you will find up there.

Yeah this hits the nail on the head.

Especially only 6 weeks in, you'd be surprised if a top player had a low team value, as otherwise would mean they had high scoring players that people haven't now chased.

At the mid season mark this will be worthwhile though.

that's hardly a suprise though. we have such a large sample size that i bet someone already had the players some other got for a hit, therefore top players are without hits and also that's why they have high team value. similar case as wondering "this weeks top scorer captained gomez!?" or whoever unpopular high scorer for that one week.

That clearly says taking on average five hits a week is a sure fire way to finishing last. 😉

Jonty, as much as I would like to agree with what you are saying, its too early to make such a judgement. I have been saying for a long time that those that do best take fewest hits, but in hindsight, this is because the best managers in FPL are the lucky ones. You have to compare with your peers in MLs, and realise that some calculated hits are worth it.

To judge your game on the lucky few at the very top is not a fair comparison. However, I can't agree with too many hits as this will mostly disappoint except for the lucky few.

I think when I say too many hits is a bad thing I get misinterpreted as saying that hits are a bad thing. They are not, just too many are. Strategic hits, to get a great player in and captain them or around double gameweeks or when all your top players are injured are of course advisable.

I guess I am just saying it is easy to be blinded (and I have been to an extent) with taking the same no-hit route that the top players are doing, when they have been able to do this buy lucking into the right players from the off in most cases, or making the right few transfers.

Surely that's common sense though. "Too much" of anything is always a bad thing no matter what it is. I get what point you're making, but I think 'luck' is the biggest factor when it comes to being at the summit.

See above...some of their teams were car crashes and had to wildcard. The fact that they wildcarded early to sort it out and are now in the top 5 is perhaps an indication that they are skilful as well as lucky.

As much as it galls us to look at these top players I think we can learn a lot from them rather than dismiss them as 'lucky'. These players real skill though will be how they ensure they remain in the top reaches of the FPL game.

Fewer hits is definitely the way to go. When I finished in the top 50 the other season I only took 5 hits all season and they were only for when I couldn't field 11 players or to bring in double gameweek players. I never took a hit to jump on a bandwagon.

Last season I took 8 hits, half of which paid off.

This season I've panicked after a poor start and have taken 3 hits already (all have failed) as well as playing my wildcard. My TV is picking up well, but the points haven't landed as yet.

To summarise: Don't make rash decisions out of frustration and use hits sparingly.

i'd guess you also had a pretty good team in that top50 season not needing much hits. people with bad teams need hits, people with good dont. in between lies a gray matter of randomness where hits pay off or don't. you have joined jonty on the cause effect confusion

I think I said this yesterday, but again; I think you are confusing cause and effect here. I am quite sure that these top 5 players picked the "right" squad from GW1, thus they got the points and the bandwagons from the start without needing to take any hits or use their wildcard.

Exactly. Or they have used their WC well, and now are reaping their rewards. There is a massive element of luck by design in FPL (small margins, human beings etc) and some great decisions on paper can go wrong with injuries etc.

The skill comes in the planning of a team, and this will mean the better managers will tend to do better, and the rest comes down to luck.

I think the key to all this is that these guys, in addition to luck with injuries, made sure they had solid starters in their side like Giroud, Sturridge, Michu and the like. So they avoided a lot of rotation issues. There were also guys like Lukaku (@ Chelsea), Anelka, Bony etc that a lot of people fancied but for various reasons did not happen. People ended up with a lot of early deadwood and clearing out one FT at a time just never feels quick enough when you see the boys at the top of the league pulling away...

I replied this about the subject earlier but it had multiple pages since so probably no one read it.

I don't understand why this is being discussed as some intangible and subjective topic, it is not a matter of opinion whether one should take hits or not. It is a simple math problem whether the expected score of your team is higher by more than four points after the possible hit.

When I say simple I mean simple in sense of the actual math. Assigning the correct probabilities to different outcomes is obviously tough and something that in the long run decides whether you finish 60k or 6k.

The leader-board changes every week. How many of the current top fifty will still be there at Christmas, never mind the end of the season?

Also, I think that transfer value is much over-rated. Last season I noticed that while many players had TVs of over 110 by the end of the season, most of the leaders had much lower TVs. It's points that count!

Its a good thing to review but there is no point so early in this season.

I've took a 4pt hit every week and I'm 75000's but I have been in the top 10000 early. There have been a few occasions where I have been either or with players and chose the wrong player. If I'd chosen the right player I would be in the top 1000. That's a bit of luck and the people at the top probably have about 20% luck through the season at least.

Trolling through the total fpl ownership table, I am looking for the best and ultimate "dif". So the requisites are:

      - low ownership of course
      - not flagged
      - nailed on ish and;
      - some possibility of more than 2 points.

I know the last one is dodgy, but please bare with me!
The list I come up to you with is:

      1) Kieran Richardson (1,571) - 4.8m attacking fullback ?
      2) Craig Gardener (1,716) 5.5m - set piece's
      3) Mike Williamson (3,141) 4.4 - only a possible I know and Newcastle are crap.
      4) Gary Medel (9386) 4.9 - def mid so clean sheet and baps ?
      5) Liam Ridgewell 20,254) 5.0 - usual suspect + WBA confident with strong mid options to protect defence.

List is bit subjective i.e. my opinion and does not factor in OOP possibility and value for money - but that is where you come. Just shows what little gold mines of points could be out there!

      P.S

Costel Panitlimon (2,283) 4.9m - we all know Hart is really crap

Form over fixtures or fixtures over form?

For me, it's a mixture of both. usually i look at what team has a great run of fixtures coming up, and then choose a player from that team that is in good form. i only get someone with a bad run of fixtures up ahead if they have hit elite form and are must-haves.

would like to hear peoples opinions on this because i know lots of people on here put form ahead of fixtures

During the summer I analysed the gameweek scores of the top 25 scoring mids and forwards in 2012/13. I looked at average scores for hard and soft fixtures, and average scores for players in-form and out of form (form defined by the previous four weeks' scores).

Guess what? Players in-form scored more (on average) than players out of form, players with easy fixtures scored more than players with hard fixtures and in-form players with easy fixtures scored the highest of all. All very obvious but there are doubters out there.

        You're doing it right.

Why do people worry about things like the following?

How cheap/ expensive their midfield is compared to their defence (how does this affect anything?)

Having 2 strikers from 1 team (yet no problem with a mid+striker)

Playing 2 defenders from the same team with good fix (glass half empty vs half full. 2 blanks is more likely, but so is 2 clean sheets)

They are just some of the things I don't get. I'm sure there are more.

Talking to a spurs fan and he reckons paulinho will get 10+ goals this season easy. Always in the box waiting when the ball goes out wide, and is almost too attacking for the double pivot apparently. Couple that with his stats which clearly indicate that and he may be onto somethin

Anyone considered Henderson (6m) as a differential?

The guy was on fire for some part of last season. Looks nailed on. You can also apply "due" concept to him.

My rival just bought him for the next 3 juicy fixtures so don't know I should be worried about it or not right now 😐

Not really important. Just post any & the rest looks after itself. The more interesting/useful your posts are, the more +1s you get which count towards the levels. Not really worth talking about on the site compared to football matters.

Fixtures less important for inform strikers I think. Their points are solely dependent on their own play and confident forwards score goals home and away, the opposition doesn't bother them when the blood's up and they're firing on all cylinders. Giroud is a prime example, took some time to adapt to PL last season, now a more self-assured striker with a great touch, he laughs at so-called 'tricky fixtures'.

If a strikers goalscoring is low they tend not to perform against alleged lesser opposition, see Soldado and Van Persie at the moment. Not getting as many from play as they should be.

I wouldn't say their points are solely dependent on their own play. the defenders are there for a reason and the better the defence the less goals scored against them
for some its not much of a problem but others it is

Strikers more influential on their own points cos a defender could have an outstanding game in a game at 0-0 in injury time, looking guaranteed a sixer plus 3 BPs but a colleague messes up, they lose 1-0, the goalscorer gets his 3 BPs and he loses a CS, because of someone else's mistake. No dispute with who scores goals but defenders are depending on their colleagues for CS.

I disagree. Has only played 2 games and 65 mins returning 1 goal, 1 assist and a bp. That presents good form. As for fixtures, City are capable of scoring big on their day against any side.

Everywhere i read about chelsea it's about how mata is back and will be instrumental from now on. Mourinho was calling for him to improve the defense aspect of his game and they reckon he has.. Won more balls than he has in a long while in the final third. The mata wagon is rolling in and i'm jumpin on 🙂 (i think 😉 )
