Robin Van Persie sits out Holland training with a toe problem. Luke Shaw and Ashley Williams withdraw from international duty, Brendan Rodgers talks up Jose Enrique’s recent displays, while Samuel Eto’o admits he’s yet to adjust to the Premier League.

Van Persie Toe Concern for Dutch

Reports yesterday indicate that Robin Van Persie missed Holland’s latest training session due to an injury to his little toe.

The Scout Says: The omission is likely to be no more than precautionary and could well be linked to the problem that had been reported prior to United’s trip to Sunderland. Certainly, if the issue was serious there’s every chance that Van Persie would have withdrawn from the squad or failed to feature against the Black Cats – given that Holland have already qualified for next year’s tournament in Brazil, there’s no need for the Dutch to take any unnecessary risks with their star striker ahead of Friday’s home clash with Hungary. Nevertheless, Fantasy managers will be hoping for a more positive prognosis ahead of a run of three home games in four for United, with the hope that Van Persie can rediscover his scoring form whilst on international duty after a poor domestic run has seen him manage just a single converted spot-kick in the past six Gameweeks.

Eto’o Needs Time to Adjust

Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o has admitted he has yet to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League since moving from Russian outfit Anzhi in the summer transfer window. Speaking to the club’s official magazine, the Cameroon international conceded:

“Already I have noticed that English football is very physical – more physical than other types of football. It hasn’t been too much time yet, so I need to continue working to make sure I keep improving my level. Every game here is important and I realise that – I have come here to enjoy playing for Chelsea and to enjoy the football. I go into every game with the same approach. It doesn’t matter where you put me, I will play football. My team-mates are helping me a lot and also the coaches, so I feel that I am settling into the team.”

The Scout Says: Yet to score for the Blues, Eto’o’s lack of impact has been somewhat surprising. Handed back-to-back starts in Gameweeks 4 and 5, he managed just an assist and has been afforded just 18 minutes since, with Jose Mourinho preferring Demba Ba’s more physical presence for Sunday’s trip to Cardiff. With Fernando Torres still sidelined due to a knee injury, Eto’o could make a return to the XI for the upcoming home clash with Cardiff – a good performance against the Bluebirds and he could be handed the chance to continue as Mourinho’s side prepare for games against Newcastle and West Brom in the next four. The Chelsea manager’s rotation policy suggests he would admittedly be no more than a punt, however, with Oscar still the only attacking option to justify our interest so far, having struck three of Chelsea’s nine goals in the opening seven Gameweeks.

Shaw Skips England Under 21 Duties

Southampton’s left-back has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad to face San Marino on Thursday. Shaw has failed to recover from the illness that forced him out of Sunday’s win over Swansea but is hopeful of recovering in time to face Lithuania next Tuesday.
The Scout Says: Shaw’s weekend absence was the latest in a series of issues that have affected his game time this term. The Saints left-back has managed just three lots of 90 minutes in the opening seven Gameweeks, with his propensity for picking up problems proving a real source of frustration for Fantasy managers. With just two goals conceded thus far, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been the most resilient defence on offer but while Artur Boruc leads the keeper rankings and Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren sit on 46 points apiece, Shaw has registered just 32 points by comparison. Indeed, with both centre-back now priced at 5.2, many may turn to Nathaniel Clyne instead – coming in at 4.4 to Shaw’s 4.7, he has now started each of the last four after winning back his starting berth and looks nailed-on at right-back.

Williams out of Wales Qualifiers

Swansea’s Ashley Williams is also amongst the international withdrawals after being forced to skip Wales’ upcoming games against Macedonia and Belgium. The centre-half had previously stated his intentions to appear but has since been ruled out after being examined by medical staff:

The Scout Says: The news will appease Swans boss Michael Laudrup, who has been without his skipper for the past two Gameweeks due to an ankle injury. Laudrup had called upon Chris Coleman to overlook Williams when naming the squad and has insisted for a number of weeks the player requires rest in order to recuperate – with another 10 days until their next league game against Sunderland, Laudrup will be a little more optimistic of welcoming Williams back to the fold as the Welsh club prepare for a very kind run of fixtures. With doubts still hovering over Williams (who is now down to 4.9 in FPL) and Ben Davies also out of international duties as a result of a hamstring problem, those eyeing up the Swansea defence for the next five Gameweeks (SUN, WHM car, STO, ful) could turn to Chico as a safer option if neither of the former two make it in time for the Black Cats encounter.

Lambert Hails Villa Versatility

Villa boss Paul Lambert reckons his players’ versatility has been vital over the past few matches. Lambert has trialled a number of formations in order to cope with injuries to key players including Christian Benteke, Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Westwood, with a 3-5-2 rolled out in the Gameweek 6 win over City:

“The beauty of it is they can adapt. The lads know it (3-5-2). They played it last year, so they know how to do it. The good thing is we can change to different ways of playing. They can adapt to whatever we ask them to do. It all depends on who we’re playing against and what players are fit, but we try to get a team to win. I played three at the back against Manchester City. Even though it was the first time this season, I thought they did exceptionally well.”

The Scout Says: Lambert had shifted from his default 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent games in order to cope with a growing injury list but with Agbonlahor and Westwood available for last week’s trip to Hull, it was perhaps telling that he reverted to 4-3-3 once again. The likes of Leandro Bacuna and Antonio Luna had been utilised as wing-backs in the win over Manuel Pellegrini’s side but the duo were moved back into defence for the Tigers trip, as Lambert relied on Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann to supply the width further up the pitch. In spite of the success against City, then, it seems likely that Lambert will only return to such a system if injuries force his hand again – thus instantly quashing Luna’s out of position prospects on the left of midfield.

Enrique Praised By Rodgers

Just a day after Aly Cissokho capped his comeback from injury with a 90-minute run out for Liverpool’s Under 21s, Brendan Rodgers has been talking up Jose Enrique’s recent displays. The Reds boss also went on to reveal the Spaniard has been nursing a slight injury over the last few matches:

“Jose has been playing with a little bit of an injury, but he’s still been showing his determination and pride for the team. He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. He’s a threat when he goes forward and defensively he’s very difficult to beat. The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He’s one who is looking to improve his game and his passing. There’s no doubt that on his day he’s one of the best in that position in this country.”

The Scout Says: With little alternative on the left of defence, Enrique has played more than 100 minutes more than any of his defensive team-mates in spite of his minor injury. Indeed, Liverpool’s only defeat arrived in Gameweek 5 when Rodgers omitted Enrique from the XI and opted for Mamadou Sakho on the left of a back-four in the 1-0 home defeat by Southampton. The result prompted a change in formation to 3-4-1-2 and saw Enrique re-installed to the starting line-up on the left of midfield and, whilst Cissokho now offers an option should Rodgers choose to rest the Spaniard, Rodgers’ praise will offer reassurance to Enrique’s owners ahead of the resumption of the domestic programme in 10 days’ time.

  1. Moyes's Young Guns Research

    Long Post Alert!
In light of huge interest in Adnan Januzaj & the related game time risk, i researched a bit on the PL Debuts of wonderkids given by Moyes (at Everton) & their subsequent appearances in PL.

    Wayne Rooney
DOB: 24.10.1985, Premier League debut in 2002.

    Season 02/03 age 17 , Goals 6 Assists 4
He was part of the club's lineup 33 times. He was 14 times in the starting team, got substituted in 19 times.

    Season 03/04 age 18 , Goals 9 Assists 3
He was part of the club's lineup 34 times. He was 26 times in the starting team, got substituted in 8 times.

    Jack Rodwell
DOB: 11.03.1991, Premier League debut in 2008.

    Season 07/08 age 17 , Goals 0 Assists 0
He was part of the club's lineup 5 times. He was 0 times in the starting team, got substituted in 2 times and stayed on the bench 3 times.

    Season 08/09 age 18 , Goals 0 Assists 0
He was part of the club's lineup 35 times. He was 9 times in the starting team, got substituted in 10 times and stayed on the bench 16 times.

    Season 09/10 age 19 , Goals 2 Assists 2
He was part of the club's lineup 28 times. He was 17 times in the starting team, got substituted in 9 times and stayed on the bench 2 times.

    Ross Barkley
DOB: 05.12.1993, Premier League debut in 2011.

    Season 11/12 age 18 , Goals 0 Assists 0
He was part of the club's lineup 22 times. He was 2 times in the starting team, got substituted in 4 times and stayed on the bench 16 times.

    Season 12/13 age 19 , Goals 0 Assists 0
He was part of the club's lineup 19 times. He was 2 times in the starting team, got substituted in 5 times and stayed on the bench 12 times.

From the above information, we can infer that except Rooney, both Rodwell & Barkley made limited starts at the initial debut age & game time increased gradually in the following years. Rooney made more starts due to his sheer quality & world class potential. Perhaps the appearances of youngsters directly depend on their quality & competition for places at that particular position.

Although the circumstances at Man Utd r different now, as Moyes has a much bigger squad than he had at Everton but Januzaj cud make a few more starts if he consistently shows his quality & the other wingers continue to show lack of form. But Moyes won't play him in every game because the pace of the Premier League is frightening. Moyes will nurse him and look after him. He'll put him in, bring him out, put him on the subs' bench etc.

The fact that they have so many other options on the flanks, despite them being in terrible form, points to him being in and out of the starting lineup at best.

Correct. He has to compete with Nani, Valencia, Young, Kagawa for the wings, which means he wont be able to feature regularly.

He's up for the 5th mid spot, and your right, a prerequisite for that spot is that they play every game. januzaj won't, so he's not an option.

However, I'm on a WC and I'm happy to have him in my team at the moment, I will take my .1 and then it will be time to part company.

I think for most he's a 2 game punt for Uniteds home fixtures ..
I've personally brought him in for 2 games with 5.5 in the bank tobupgrade to Walcott when he's back from injury!

True that. Talent wise Januzaj is more talented than Sterling. But see Pool's bench during Matchdays, it is made up of teenagers, whereas Utd have a much better bench & squad.

United are trying to get hime to sign a new contract, he can leave at the end of the season for free and start talking to other clubs in January.

Once he signs he will get put back in the reserves/U21 for the rest of the season.

Everyone needs to wait at least a year before getting him.

i think Januzaj's Contract must be really on Moyes's mind, given the interest frm Barcelona & other clubs. So looking to keep him happy at the club by involving him more, either as a sub or by starting him.

I have considered this as well on my hypothethetical wildcard team. If clyne is your fifth defender I don't see why you shouldn't triple up. He's good back up and his value should continue to rise. Defensively Southampton seem to be the new Stoke, tripling up on Stoke worked wonders until the second half of last season.

Right, I saved a transfer last week and now my 2 FTs are burning a hole in my pocket. Need to shift HBA, but first of all I have to to free up some cash. While I want to keep Rooney, I fail to see how he is worth £3M more than Lukaku on current form.

    A) Rooney > Lukaku
    B) HBA > Oscar

    Good moves?

I agree on the Rooney to Lukaku move (although i can see a case for keeping, i just think Utd are clearly struggling at the moment and better options can be found elsewhere)

Oscar seems OK, but im not sure if there aren't better/cheaper options (possibly Paulinho?), but until they emerge Oscar is reasonably nailed on.

hmmm....You could just do Kompany > Terry/Ivan and save 1 FT.

Im preserving my faith in Eriksen, has an excellent run of fixtures, with Villa next. Still a great FPL option IMO.

          or

Kompany > Terry and Eriksen > Paulinho/Ramsey (I'd go for Paulinho or keep Eriksen personally)

Well, at least that's what I think 😉

Kompany & Eriksen -> Terry & Ramsey is the other option, yes, but I think I prefer Coleman & Oscar, to that, to be honest - bit more attacking threat in there, imo. Think the Ramsey wagon is finally about to stall, as well... 😉

Honestly with those fixtures, I think so. I'm a fixture man though, and I think the "form" will come as a product of it. Less attacking threat, more baps though.

Everton next five are HUL, avl, TOT, cpl, LIV
Swansea next five are SUN WHM car STO ful

All 5 of Swansea's fixtures are IMO excellent for CS potential, while Everton I only really like HUL and cpl. Swansea have 2 home games in a row, you never know how short-term the move could be.

I'm not sure exactly how much appetite there is for the below information, but I'm bored during the Intl break and thought I would share my thoughts on West Ham's early season developments in respect of FPL. I know various FFS articles will have alluded to some of this information already, but hopefully a few points will be helpful.

    The form:

    W / D / L / D / L / L / W

A lack of suitable striking options has really limited our start to the season, especially given the relatively easy set of fixtures (CAR, new, STO, sot, EVE, hul, tot). From those fixtures I would have really expected an extra 2-3 points. With the long term injury to Andy Carroll leaving Maiga as the only recognised fit forward, our chance creation and conversion has been too low. The surprise result however came on Sunday, with a 3-0 victory at WHL. Allardyce employed a 4-6-0 formation, dropping Maiga to the bench, and starting Vaz Te as part of the midfield six (he played on the left wing). Our first two away goals of the season were perhaps fortuitous, especially Vaz Te's goal from a rebound off of his knee, but Morrison's was a great goal which has propelled him either further onto Fantasy radars.

    The players - FPL:

GK - Jussi - He has kept four clean sheets so far, with one MOTM display away to Southampton. His position in the first XI seems secure for now and the mid term.

DEF - Allardyce has used 6 defenders so far this season, with the full backs being unsettled as expected given Demel's injury record and Rat finding his PL feet. The surprise (to me at least, perhaps not for Doosra) however has been the emergence of Tomkins. I think this is a mixture of average form from Collins and Allardyce's realisation that Collins' continual long balls don't work without a proper target man to aim for. Tomkins was introduced to the first eleven away to Hull and had an average game in defence, but it was his impact on our playing style that was most telling. To conclude, I would argue that the only safe pick of our defenders for now is Reid.

MID - Most of this site are already well aware of both Nolan and Noble, and to some degree Morrison. For the next 4-5 GWs, I would expect these three to be nailed on to be the middle three.

Morrison's attacking threat is clear for all to see with 2 goals in 4 starts in the PL. What is encouraging is the positions he is taking up whilst being played deeper than Nolan. Over the last four gameweeks (when both have started), he has made more passes in the final third, more crosses, more chances, more through balls and has had more shots on target, more touches in the final third, more passes received in the final third and of course, more goals.

As for the wide positions, I would advise FPL managers to avoid all of Jarvis, Cole, Downing and Vaz Te. They are all now fit and will likely be swapped/subbed throughout the next few weeks.

The odd one out is Diame, whose position in midfield has changed throughout the season. He has been shifted out wide to accomodate Morrison in a 4-5-1, but played more centrally in Sunday's 4-6-0 and provided a brilliant assist for Morrison. Again though, I would avoid.

FWD: As mentioned earlier, the only fully fit forward at the moment is Maiga, who has been underwhelming to say the least. He is simply not suited to playing as a lone forward, and I forsee his contribution to the rest of the season being limited to appearances from the bench. Petric is returning to fitness after missing a pre-season and will likely be preferred over Maiga. Of course, the factor for WHU forwards is whether or not Allardyce will stick to 4-6-0 whilst Carroll is injured.

My FPL list of viable options would be just Jussi, Reid & Morrison. After his pre season form and recent form, I really expect big things from Morrison this season. I think his appeal will increase even further if Nolan were to get suspended or injured, allowing Morrison to play further forward.

The upcoming fixtures: MCI, swa, AVL, nor, CHEL, FUL
    Last years corresponding results: 0-0 / 0-3 / 1-0 / 0-0 / 3-1 / 3-0 (D/L/W/D/W/W)

I'm aware all of the above may not be very useful as a lot of people won't have invested in WHU players, but hopefully it helps a few people at least.

      Depends.

With Kone and Jelly lurking, surely Lukaku's minutes will diminish.

Whereas Giroud is Arsenal's sole striker, so most of the service is going to him. ( Same as Lukaku I suppose)

Giroud I think , not by much though

I've never had much joy (or patience for that matter) with Silva. He is so creative but I keot finding when I've owned him that he seemed to akways make the crucial but annoyingly penultimate ball and so I struggled to pick up points. Maybe I've been unlucky and lacked the patience to hold onto him for a long spell.

Chelsea and Man City were a baptism of fire literally and they did pretty ok. they've looked tight all season tbh. Away from home they tend to sit back and make it difficult with their 5 in midfield. IF they concede an early goal Everton should get 2-3. if not.. gonna be a frustratin day

Watched both games and they looked pretty solid. If not for the brilliance of Remy in that game Newcastle were kept totall out of it. That being said, we could apply the 'brilliance' of Lukaku to this situation as well. Also considering that Everton have been largely impressive and fluid getting forward when compared to all 3 - City, Chelsea and Newcastle.

I have a feeling Everton will win this one semi-comfortably.

Thing is Hull are also going to Goodison on the back of a dual CS venture vs West Ham and Villa albeit at home.

I would love to love Kun but i would say hes probably the single most annoying player to own. He seems to fail to start or score when he should (vs Hull etc) and then scores big when you least expect it (vs Utd). He also gets rested before champions league annoyingly. I honestly think he would be the top goalscorer this season if he played every game though.

Toure is kind of nailed on i guess, atleast until johnson is back, but i reckon he'll still be a part of starting XI. Hazard will play the majority of minutes, so no imminent rush to rid him, would transfer collins though, he most likely will not start the next few games or so.

just go through the teams and try to name their player that you think will get you most points?
This year its too early to tell in my opinion, lots of options for the better teams

Michu's value could be dented by Bony until they click
      Lamberts also
Tekkers is the huge one, and perhaps Lukaku
Sturridge / Suarez is up in the air and I think won't be much between them points wise.
      Giroud/Ozil
      Rooney/RVP
I still think Soldado will be spurs main scorer in a few weeks

not really sure what to do with my team during this break

    mignolet (davis)
    coleman, zabaleta, ivanovic (burner, rosenoir)
    barkley, ozil, michu, ramsey (ravel)
    giroud. suarez, sturridge

    £0 in the bank

going to save the transfer but if i was going to use it i would swap giroud for lukaku or zabaleta for clyne, shall i stick or anybody got any other viable options for me?

      Wouldn't get Clyne this GW.
Up to you on the Lukaku transfer.

Wildcard played. Anything you would have done different?

    Mignolet - Lewis
    Terry - Dawson - Wilson - Clyne - B. Turner
    Özil - Michu - Toure - Barkley - Morrison
    Giroud - Sturridge - Lukaku

I think the defence could be a little better, a Swansea defender is a good investment for the next few weeks. Not a fan of Yaya despite him scoring well at the moment

Wilson and Dawson might be issues soon. I own both and I am not confident.

Normally i get players in for a run of fixtures.. eg Eriksen - WHM avl HUL eve NEW , Rooney - WBA, sun SOT STK ful... and dont bother taking them out until that run is over as i expect an ok return on average over the run. With the bandwagons changing every week on here i gotta say it's difficult much more difficult to keep my resolve this year.. Gonna go against the grain and stick with my policy though. Cant swap players out week in week out else you'll always end up missing points(no player scores every week! which seems to be the hope on here) ! Hope patience gets rewarded..

Yep, I do the same. Got to be patient unless there's a real reason to sell e.g. Soldado getting dropped and Lukaku looking unstoppable.

Yup.. dropping rotation risks etc is necessary. It's ppl droppin nailed on options with good fixtures chasing nailed on option with good fixtures that i dont get sometimes. Form can change from GW to another too

Same tactic here, I hear ya. Waiting on Moses, Mirallas and Mertesacker still 🙂 Given up hope on Soldado, he was benched the game that was supposed to be his big shot at FPL fame! I expect a sting at some point in the next two GWs.

        Gave up on Soldado too..
        I got
Mirallas Eriksen Rooney Giroud .. all of whom i've seen ppl on here taking out of their teams, all of whom are nailed on in mine for a few more weeks atleast

I feel vulnerable now that I have Lukaku AND Mirallas, but there aren't too many good replacements for Mirallas... especially with the fixtures he's got. He's got the most shots in the box without a goal this season I think, like 10. Man up and score KevKev!

+1.. He's nailed to my team UNTIL he is dropped/injured(i feared both last week 🙂 )

Thats called playing the %'s and being a good Fantasy player, unfortunately things don't always go to plan but all we can do is try to play the odds in our favour.

Play the same way every year for 4 seasons and it's yielded good results. Seeing ppl in my ML who've been horrid at this game right at the top is a bit jarring but i'm keeping the faith that their bandwagon chasing will make them drop.. With everyone gettin the same information now(thanks to this site 😉 ) it's all about sticking to proper managerial tactics to win now 🙂

I agree, and IMO is the best way to play the game.
However this year that tactic hasn't been very effective, and bandwagoning has been the most lucrative.
Perhaps that's why we are seeing previously high scoring players having a bad season and the casuals cleaning up.
      Hopefully it wont last.

I keep telling myself that the usual method will prosper.. Waiting until the end of the week to make transfers is one more tactic that seems to be backfirin at the moment due to TV. Hoping over the season it'll help me out more often than not
