Double-pivot Fantasy assets and knowing when to dump a poorly-performing player were among the key discussions on the boards this week. We also heard from some of the community’s quieter members in an epic post and look back at the latest action in the community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Dufflinks has highlighted an emerging theory as to why players such as Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure have emerged as a greater source of points this season. Both play in a double pivot role, Dufflinks argues, and are able to bomb forward while defences deal with the more established attacking threat of a striker and three attacking midfielders. Judging by Ramsey’s lacklustre performance on the right wing against West Brom in Gameweek 7, this is perhaps a theory with some credibility.

At what point does the ownership of a player become so huge that to ignore them runs the risk of a dramatic fall in the rankings? The Sarjeant’s discussion on this issue will prove particularly interesting reading for those without Ramsey, who is owned by almost half of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Tinkerman posed a question for those who use the site, but rarely take part in discussions, asking what would make them comment more often? What followed was one of the most epic discussions we’ve ever seen, with more than 200 replies. It was great to hear from those posters who rarely comment – Tinkerman’s post gave them the courage to wade into a community discussion for the first time. We’ve also been given lots of requests for new features within this thread, which we will consider over the coming weeks.

Ever thought about just quitting Fantasy football? Of course not. No matter how bad a Gameweek is we always come back for more. Not so for BennyDeBull though. He’s quit FPL after seven years, deleting his account in the process, after a particularly bad start to the season. Adios Benny. In his memory we decided to ask the community if they have ever walked away from their team or ruined it through hits. For most of us it turns out no matter how bad it gets we can’t resist coming back for more – Roscola also revealed that ignoring his team in a fit of pique ended up boosting his rank.

Instead of ditching an entire team, the more sensible ploy after a bad start is of course to ditch the worst players. But timing is crucial when dumping a player, warns The Dark Defender. His hot topic asked when is the best time to get rid, with history and experience of being burnt before emerging as key factors in his decision.

Scored asked just why is it not a good idea to double up on strikers? With Liverpool’s “SAS” strike-force of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge both performing well, why not acquire both? With the duo in such compelling form it is a very persuasive argument indeed.

Wakey has delivered an update on his Falling Stars, the name he gives to those who have dropped in price but could be set for a points haul over the coming weeks. Romelu Lukaku once again delivered, as did Patrice Evra. Meanwhile, waiting patiently on his bench for the Gameweeks ahead are Christian Benteke (now down to 8.8) Theo Walcott (9.2)and Glen Johnson (5.8). Wakey has also looked at the number of risers and fallers by team. His findings prove surprising reading, especially for Manchester United fans.

Finally, Deme’l’ God teamed up with us for a joint hot topic this week on whether we can learn anything from those currently in the top ten.

Community Leagues

The scouting stage of FFS UEFA’s Beach Soccer World Cup team tournament is now in full swing ahead of its launch in Gameweek 8. We’ve dedicated an article to the competition – those interested should use this as the place for discussion on the tournament.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s FA Cup themed tournament saw 116 winners emerge from Gameweek 7. They will now be joined by 44 teams from Conference North and Conference South for the Second Round Qualifying. The draw can be found here.

In Tommy We Trust’s six All Things league leaders going into Gameweek 8 are La Roja, Chilin_Dude, LawnDart, Snevitz, Crouch Potato and Binij. Tommy has also released a cup competition with a £50 prize starting in Gameweek 10. It’s called All Things 50 Quid and more details can be found here.

HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First- 2 Million+ Club, for those with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks has a new leader Barboa II, who has climbed to 221,725th. Of the 23 involved, 11 are now in the top 1,000,000.

Dogba is the new main league leader of the It’s A Long and Winding Road competition. Its head to head league leaders are Hay Number 2, Gaz Downright, IAmSuarez, Beric, Super Hans, ManAmongst and Iain_90.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life the league leaders remain Thomass, Daniel and Al Pacino.

Sorry for the repost...managed to get it at the end of the last topic....

      Falling stars

First the blurb…sandwiched between the knee jerk and the coming GW falling stars is a fictitous squad/team made up of fallers and crocs all valued below their opening GW values and collectively on or less than the original 100 mill budget and an antidote to chasing those 0.1 increases on the green side of TOTALFPL.

GW7 update (as posted 8/10)…a quiet week but nonetheless above average and a small boom..

      Cech 3pts
      Koscielny 3pts Clyne 6pts Rosenior 5pts Evra 7pts
      Moses 3pts Cabaye 2pts Mata 2pts Sess 2pts
      Eto'o 1pt Lukaku (C) 12pts
bench 4.0 Johnson DNS Walcott DNS Benteke DNS
46 pts total (gw avg 36pts)

With RVP now joining the ever increasing band of fallers the international break offers a good chance to take another look at the RVP/RVPless debate from the point of view of the red side of the transfer market. With an opening value of 14.0 mill it became quickly apparent to many FPL managers that an RVP squad would leave many spots in their squad looking rather thin…but what of now, seven weeks into the season.

With a gap in PL football I am going to take the opportunity to present two teams over two GW’s for thought and debate…The first an RVP team made up from the latter day ne’er do wells and fallers…followed next week by an entirely different RVPless squad/team made up from similar dysfunctional FPL prospects…thus far !

Very often FPL managers have a format in mind when choosing an initial squad, two heavies at the back (keeper?)..two heavy mids..two heavy hitting strikers.. and a variety of mid priced and cheapies making up the rest, you all know the drill.
Sadly for those who wished for an RVP squad the above was not achievable with the massive 14.0 price tag for RVP, with compromises having to be made throughout the mids and/or defence…
With that in mind I have put together this weeks squad to reflect our initial “squad balance” and see if an RVP “balanced” team is now achievable through clever buying and an obsession with the red side of TOTAFPL…without compromise on overall quality.

Arrows indicate rate of sales travel...Bench =b1, b2,b3

      DDG (5.9v) xxxx (4.0)

      Johnson (5.8v) Koscielny (5.3v) Williams (4.9v) Clyne (4.4^b2) Rosenior (3.9^b3)

      Walcott (9.2v) Hazard (9.0v) Sessegnon (6.7v) Hernandez (5.9v) Morrison (4.4^b1)

      RVP (13.9v) Benteke (8.8v) Lukaku (7.9^C)

Team value 100.0 mill (saving 2.5 mill on original opening GW values).

Not bad and perhaps proves our initial “balance” is now achievable. With six crocs in there, and internationals to come, it will be a big ask for a decent GW score…nonetheless, food for thought and plenty for the watch list.

Selected other fallers…Januzaj(4.7^) Cole(6.4v) Evra (6.4v)Lescott(5.2v)Cabaye (6.2v)Cech(6.4v)Coutinho(8.6v)Ramires(6.4v)Gibbs(5.4)Negredo(9.3)…and on and on.

Hope you liked this weeks choices and keep watching the fallers.

Interesting. At the beginning of the season picking RVP meant 2 heavy hitting midfielders instead of 3 and 3 budget midfielders. Strangely the budget midfielders have fired making bringing in RVP A viable option but RVP has let the plan down. It seems from this article that it is possible to bring RVP in and instead of having 3 budget midfielders you could own 1 budget and 2 mid priced midfielders and field a very good team. All it needs is the budget midfielders to start mid firing and RVP and the mid priced midfielders to start firing. I wont hold my breath.

Yeah...i just wanted to demonstrate how the maths have changed our ability to form an RVP team...I put this together with the original 100 mill budget again but it's worth remembering that most player will now have around 102 mill to spend...not the 100 mill i've used..So in fact it is now almost possible to have a team similar to the above but with three heavy mids not two...or Baines if you like instead of Johnson.

Shouldn't your second goalkeeper be someone who has actually fallen in value such as Mannone (4.3), or do you relax that rule for players who aren't going to play anyway when there are cheaper players available who have not fallen?

Yeah, I relax it in the case of the second keeper to the cheapest throwaway option in the interest of the whole post, which is, hopefully, designed to monitor the options available for the patient player as oppose to the knee jerk and chasing 0.1 risers....

I seem to remember that in my first FPL season one of the early leaders made use of early fallers in order to increase his bank balance. He would transfer in good players who had fallen by 0.1 (usually because of a short-term injury) but were likely to rise again, until he had saved 0.5. Then he would upgrade one of his other players by this 0.5. It seemed to work quite well for him.

So while relying entirely on fallers is probably not the best idea, bringing in some of them in order to afford to upgrade other members of the squad would appear to a strategy well worth bearing in mind. The challenge is to spot the fallers who are likely to recover and score well.

A more popular method of building up one's bank balance is to jump on bandwagons and then sell these players on at a profit. Here the challenge is to let the players go at the best time.

And the third way is to anticipate bandwagons by selecting the best players from the start, and just watching their value increase as they score lots of points. Again, much easier said than done! Many of us probably try to do this, but few of us succeed.

      Afternoon all. little help please:

Latest on Hernandez and Davies for Swansea? Their fixtures look proper tasty so if both okay my plan is to do:

      A thought on hits.

Ok so your rival has Michu this week against Sunderland at home. A fixture which we'd all expect Michu to produce the goods.

My puzzler is about taking hits. Is it worth a hit because there is a strong likelihood that Michu will score, say, ten points. Now for the sake of -4 you can take a safety hit and ensure that your rival doesn't get ten points ahead. Is it ever worth considering?

Obviously this applies to any rival who has a hot shot playing weak opposition.

Don't worry about your rival too much so early in the season. Just weight up the hit on its own.

Anyway, what if Michu blanks, or at least fails to outscore the player you sell by 4 points? Or what if the player you sell even outscores Michu?

Too early to be covering other teams coverage. Slightly different but in The Euro 2012 game a rival was 20 points ahead of me and another rival. He created a spreadsheet of Italy and Spain players and tried to cover every combination that me and the other rival could possibly come up with. What he hadn't reckoned on was both of us picking entirely Spain players. Spain hammered Italy and this rival finished 3rd (and out of the prize fund). If he had picked his own team and not worried about ours then he would have finished 1st with a few points to spare.

So the moral, if picking Michu for a hit benefits your team then do it. If it is to cover a rival then don't do it and just make your own decisions judging on what is best for your team.

If you're pretty sure you want michu longterm i personally see no problem spending 4 points on him particularly if you think the player you transfer out will do much worse in the longterm, and especially because he has a good fixture now.

If he does great this week that is a bonus. Many disagree with taking hits so readily though.

And one more thing - IMO don't think about your rival until maybe GW36. Just think about your team and your points.

What if your bringing in a player to make him your captain or to profit from a DGW?

Surely its a good idea to have a player in who seems destined to score if the rest of your team is under performing or have poor fixtures for that week.

I took a hit to get tekkers in, made him my cap and he scored so it seemed like a good move. (until he got injured the next game)

I know, I've been so excited all week after I discovered I was still top. I thought Jonty would correct his oversight which I complained about last week. I sent links to all my friends on facebook, rang my mum and gave her the internet address, even contacted the local paper but they weren't particularly interested for some reason. I've also had to hold off on adding it to my CV.

I just thought about succesful FPL striker pairings from the past could not remember one unless 1 is behind the other. Suarez, Sturridge seem to be switching points, and Roo and RvP not shining either. I think Lukaku and Tekkers may be 2 must strikers this season

I cant see him being worth 14 mil while playing together up front with Rooney. If you read my post than try to remember a good striking partnership(or 1 where at least 1 did exeptionally) that did well on FPL unless 1 was playing behind the other? I am going for Tekkers/Lukaku/Remy Suarez/Sturridge 3 of them unless Moyes changes formation

I think RvP is a world class fwd, unlike Tekkers/Lukaku/Remy Suarez/Sturridge who are all just very good. If RvP can recreate the form of last two seasons then he'll win the golden boot again.

                😆

I agree Van Persie is world class, but I'd say Suarez is at least as good and Benteke is a class above Sturridge and Remy!

Suarez would've won Golden boot last year if he didn't get into a misunderstanding with Ivanovic, Persie was lucky.

I dont think so, both equally rotation threats while ravel only scored 3 and assisted 3 last season in the championship with 23 starts and 4 sub appearences, this season both of his goals have came from his only 2 shots on target and in total he is averaging 1 shot per game with 4 starts and 2 sub appearences.

While Januzaj put up one of the best fantasy performances we have seen from a mid this season considering shots on target and shots total, only equalled by guys like Michu and Walcott.

Much more competition though at United and Moyes will ease him in gently. Allardyce has already shown that he has faith in playing Ravel.

Ravel competing for Spots with Jarvis, Joe Cole(who just got fit), Carroll will take another spot once back, Downing. I agree that Januzaj will probably start maximum 50% of games but hopefully they will be the easy ones for him to bring in the big hauls. I actually own both, but only brought in Ravel on the WC for bench fodder as he is not really a goalscorer you can rely on even if he plays.

And Januzajs competition is basically Ashley Young and maybe Nani who compared to what he showed in 1 game seem like nobodies. I know I am a bit overhypeing the man. But I think 50% of starts in easy games is a realistic prediction for him. Ravel could get more but less points

if he will only start 50% of games buying him seems crazy. At least ravel is .5 mil cheaper if the aim is to put him on the bench every game.

I think its way too early to call. Kostja puts forward what seems to be a decent argument on the face of it, but then you should consider the teams each has played against.

Ravel has started away to Southampton, Spurs and Hull, and home to Everton. Hardly easy fixtures, and he scored against the tougher two of the four. Aside from the PL, Morrison has also scored 2 in 2 in the League Cup (not sure on Januzaj in the league cup?).

Januzaj has made one start away to mangerless relegation fodder of Sunderland.

Personally I'm going for Ravel for the short term due to him being nailed on and trusted (for now) by Allardyce. Of course once Januzaj has strung together 3-4 starts, I will consider him and compare the stats properly.

A classic, maybe too busy a dial for you?

Also need to have some certainty that it is genuine so ebay probably the wrong place to be. But a second-hand classic could work.

With shaw going to old trafford, and not fit for the last game, it is possibly worth a hit to guarantee 3 starters. if so go for a long term replacement, and check they have good fixtures for shaw's tough games (manu, man city, arsenal, chelsea, mostly away)

So I just welcomed my 2nd baby into the world. Hooray for me!

I suppose I'd better write something FF related then...

Is there a better option than Barkley to bring in for Nolan this week? Options seems to be:

        A) Barkely
        B) Ramires
        C) Hernandez
        D) Januzaj
        E) Dyer/Routledge

D & E leave me enough cash for Mirallas -> Walcott in GW9, but A unfortunately leaves me 0.1m short (unless Wally falls by the GW9 deadline - if he doesn't then is probably get Eriksen).

        Boruc, Davis
        Baines, Terry, Toure, Zaba, Ward
        Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
        Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud
        Bank 0.4m

          Thanks all!

          Think I'm between

          A) getting Barkley (and hoping Wally falls). If he doesn't then id get Eriksen instead.
          B) getting Januzaj - very risky but for 4.7m and an injury free squad it's not that risky. Then Mirallas -> Wally in GW9 is certain
          C) Saving the transfer

          Best bet?

Yeah he sucks. I brought him in for Lallana which must be my worst move in some time. Scores since I swapped.... Moses: 2, 2, 3. Lallana: 6, 6, 11.

That's a total loss of 16 points, plus the 4 points I spent the following week that I wouldn't have had to if I'd saved the transfer, plus the other 4 points that I spent getting rid of Wisdom to free up a Liverpool slot for Suarez, and I reckon Moses owes me a total of 24 points.

That said, I'm probably keeping for the next 4 weeks.

you may as well hang on to both of them for the time being.
oscar has the possibility of not playing right after the internationals due to jet lag and getting back later than the others. I believe this was the case right after the last round of internationals..
eriksen to sigurdsson no real benefit that I can see.
          I would hold on both.

he played really well vs chelsea, that was the last game i saw him play tbh.
they have a tough game vs villa next followed by as easier match versus hull.
do the transfer but not for a hit tho. get michu/yaya, see above for reasons to hold off on oscar till perhaps after chelsea's game vs city.

Afternoon all .... my first year getting past GW3 with W/C intact and always regretted when some big DGWs came up last year in particular.

Are we guaranteed similar big DGWs later this season or were they just caused by weather issues last year ?

Last season was due to congestion issues from the cup games (FA and League) rather than with the weather.

If your team is a total mess, then WC. But only if it's a total mess!

You never know what can happen later in the season; ie injuries, DGWs, etc.

There is usally a DGW around GW36 due to the FA cup, and postponed games due to winter can be rearranged earlier, although often aren't rearranged until the last few GWs

I'm also pretty happy I managed to get away without WCing until now, but there is a long way to go yet!!!

        Maybe old news but;

        http://www.voetbalprimeur.nl/nieuws/item/niet-fitte-van-persie-maakt-plaats-voor-kuyt

In English: Van Persie makes place (maakt plaats) for Dirk Kuyt tomorrow, because RvP isn't fit.

Dirk is a legend. Though never as skilful as Van Persie he has the heart of a lion and scored a a fair few goals for Pool. Literally eats, sleeps and drinks football.
