Glen Johnson expects to return to training next week for Liverpool, while the Reds coach Mike Marsh elaborates more on the recent switch to 3-5-2. Oscar finds the net for Brazil but has picked up a calf knock. Jozy Altidore nets as the US ease past Jamaica and Phil Bardsley could be set for a surprise return to the Sunderland fold under new boss Gus Poyet.

Johnson Close to Return

Liverpool’s right-back revealed via twitter he was edging towards a first-team comeback somewhat sooner than expected. Johnson took to twitter to announce:

“Six weeks of hard work as paid off. Back with the team on Tuesday. Finally.”

The Scout Says: A potential return for Johnson in time for the Gameweek 8 trip to Newcastle would bring him immediately onto Fantasy radars. Liverpool registered a clean sheet in each of the first three fixtures with Johnson in the XI but have conceded in all of the subsequent four after he was sidelined following a clash with Patrice Evra in the Gameweek 3 win over United. Now down to 5.8 in FPL with an ownership under 5%, he looks an enticing differential – all the more so if the Reds decide to retain their recent 3-5-2 formation, affording him an out of position berth on the right of midfield.

Marsh Discusses Reds 3-5-2

Liverpool coach Mike Marsh hinted that the new 3-5-2 system may not be Brendan Rodgers’ default formation, however, after shifting from 4-2-3-1 in the last couple of league matches. Speaking to the club’s official website, Marsh stressed:

“We have had to adapt. It’s not natural to certain players on the pitch, but it’s not massively different from where we are. It’s a 3-5-2 when we start, but it’s fluid throughout the game. A lot of the stuff that we do in the game are things that we work on anyway, so training hasn’t been radically different. It’s an opportunity to try something different. You need different formations to play against different opposition. We’ve played in that formation now on a couple of occasions, which shows that we can do it and so if we need to flip to it we can do it in the game”.

The Scout Says: Despite the undoubted success of the new system, the picture is likely to become a little clearer when the treatment room empties. At present, Glen Johnson’s absence has had a significant say in the decision to switch to a three-man defence, allowing Jordan Henderson or Raheem Sterling to take the right flank berth instead. In addition, Philippe Coutinho – once fit – also looks tailor-made for such a system with the Brazilian able to slot into the role in “the hole†behind the front two. Given that Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have scored five goals between them in two league games since the Uruguayans’ return from suspension, Rodgers certainly has little reason to change the system right now.

Aspas Struggling to Settle

Liverpool’s summer signing has conceded his lack of game time over the last few matches is becoming an issue after a slow start to his career on Merseyside.

“I’m finding it hard to be a sub at Liverpool having started games in the past few years. When I left Celta Vigo I was aware that to start for Liverpool wasn’t going to be easy. And now the team is winning and we are among the leaders in the Premier League, it’s very hard to get a game. I hope to carry on working hard and little by little to get more game time with Liverpool. I want to change the current situation”.

The Scout Says: Having grabbed 12 goals in 33 La Liga appearances for Celta Vigo last term, Aspas arrived at Anfield with a decent scoring record. So far, though, he’s done little to justify a regular role – handed a start in each of the first three Gameweeks, he failed to find the net and has since been utilised as a sub, with just three minutes of game time over the last two league games. Suarez’s return, allied with a change in system has hardly helped his cause, with the Spaniard looking set for further time on the periphery unless injuries hit hard.

Oscar in the Goals Again

The Chelsea midfielder maintained his recent scoring form by grabbing the second in a 2-0 win over South Korea courtesy of a Paulinho assist. The pair were two of three Premier League starters along with David Luiz, whilst Ramires and Lucas also featured as second-half subs. After the game, Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari revealed Oscar is a doubt for Tuesday’s clash with Zambia, going on to say:

“He had a knock on the calf, and felt a little dizzy. I haven’t decided yet whether he will start.”

The Scout Says: With a long-haul flight back from the friendly (which takes place in China), Oscar’s growing band of Fantasy owners will perhaps be keen for the Blues playmaker to be rested ahead of Saturday’s home game against Cardiff. The 8.8 priced midfielder has been particularly consistent at Stamford Bridge and has racked up double figures in two of his three appearances in front of the Chelsea faithful – over 44,000 FPL managers have already snapped him up on the back of last week’s strike at Norwich. Luiz’ owners will also be hoping Scolari takes it easy on the centre-half – he was the only one of the Premier League-based quintet to play the full 90 minutes last night. Jose Mourinho does, of course, have the option on calling on Gary Cahill as a potential partner for John Terry for the meeting with Cardiff. Cahill has made way in the last two league encounters.

Bardsley In the Black Cats Frame

Gus Poyet’s arrival on Wearside looks good news for Sunderland’s out-of-favour Phil Bardsley. The right-back was frozen out under Paolo Di Canio for disciplinary reasons but has recently recovered from a foot injury and has returned to full training for the Black Cats – reports in the local press suggest he could return to the first-team squad for the trip to Swansea as Poyet looks to bring more Premier League experience to his first XI.

The Scout Says: With his new side sitting six points from safety already, Poyet’s arrival could hand a few faces a lifeline after many were overlooked by Di Canio. The likes of Lee Cattermole has already made a return under the Black Cats’ brief interim boss Kevin Ball and with Di Canio’s raft of summer signings failing to gel or acclimatise quickly, Bardsley may well oust Ondrej Celustka from the right-back berth. Aside from upcoming trips to Hull and Stoke, the schedule remains rough on Sunderland, with the fixtures looking a little kinder from Gameweek 16 onwards – few will be looking to invest right now until the Uruguayan can prove his side are worth our consideration.

Altidore Ends Goal Drought

Poyet was afforded a boost up front after the US international returned to scoring ways in a match against Jamaica that finished in the early hours of yesterday morning. Altidore grabbed the second in a 2-0 win and is starting to find his feet again before a trip to Panama, with the game kicking off at 2.30am Wednesday morning.

The Scout Says: Having arrived on the back of a season which saw him score 23 league goals for AZ Alkmaar, it’s something of an understatement to suggest Altidore has failed to live up to expectations. While the likes of Craig Gardner and Emanuele Giaccherini have chipped in with a couple of goals apiece, the US international has yet to find the net in six league appearances but with Steven Fletcher still sidelined due to a dislocated shoulder, Altidore – who is now down to 6.5 in FPL from an initial price of 7.0 – will be handed plenty opportunity to prosper by his manager over the next few weeks. Given the above-mentioned schedule, though, his acquisition is a risk few will be willing to take.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Here we go....

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

Following on from The Sarjeant’s excellent recent long term planning hot topic (see side bar to the right) I thought I’d have a look at the next six gameweeks and see if we can come up with a perfect team based on fixtures.

In terms of fixtures SWA, EVE,, AVL, ARS, CHE, SUN and CPL have the best set of matches so it’d be best to base our main captaincy options around CHE, ARS, EVE and SWA. In terms of cheaper options those teams have some options but SUN and CPL could also be good for one or two spots. Obviously Sunderland is based on Poyet in succeeding on turning them around. From my experience of seeing a Poyet team at Brighton he sets them out not to lose possession and to defend well. I believe chances will be fewer but there could be some clean sheets plus passing bonus here.

So based on that here’s my stab at a best 15 for the next six gameweeks (I haven’t checked price but have made my choices with price in mind).

    I’ve also labelled captaincy options

    Vorm Westwood/Speroni

    Baines B Davies/Chico Terry O Shea Ward

    Barkley Michu(c) Oscar (c) Ramsey Walcott(c)
    Lukaku (c) Benteke (c) Giroud(c)

Obviously form is going to come into it too, so I expect that one of the striker spots to be reserved for Sturridge/Rooney perhaps. But I think this team could really propel someone up the leagues.

What do you think of that team? How would you change it and what players do you think will make the highest scoring team over the next six weeks?

I couldn't decide between Davies and Chico or Westwood/Speroni as a back up. I'd probably play Vorm most matches anyway over this period.

Its intresting what you say about Poyet and Sunderland. I have had Celsutka in the sky game from the start and couldnt be bothered wasting a transfer to take him out, you think he will start to pick up some cleanies? Also worried about Bardsley....

No idea who he will start..but what I do know is that he will get them organised and in grain in them the ideal of never losing possession.

At lower league level he turned a bunch of long ball players into a tightly knit group of possession hoggers. League 1 had never seen the like of it since Swansea went all Barcelona. The DM is key to Poyet...whoever he picks there should be good for Sky bonus...Liam Bridcutt was key to his Brighton success.

Indeed, it's an interesting post that should generate good discussion, thought, etc. I was just thought a topic first generates dialogue thus proving to be 'hulk' worthy...I didn't know a topic could be hulked before proving itself - that's all. Again, a good topic nonetheless.

Jonty, it is not really an odd comment imo...indeed, as stated, this post is a good topic that will generate good discussion, thought, etc. The point is, why 'hulk' a post before it's generated healthy dicussion? I dare say that, due to the post being 'hulked' it's generated 50+ comments...if some joe shmuck, like me, posted this same comment, it'd probably generate little to no discussion...

Actually for the next 2 games I dont mind Giroud at all, the fixtures are just so good. Othervise yes I think one of the SAS is a good idea, Remy after the fixtures ease as well. If that were my team than Ramsay would be an obvious place to get one of the awesome cheap mids in. Januzaj for the biggest risk vs Reward, Brady once fit, the WBA frenchman or Ravel and upgrade Ward with that cash.

I wouldn't trust Sunderland until I see a clear indicator of improvement. If budget allowed, I'd like to swap O'Shea for Ivanovic. I think he could earn many points during this good run.

Attacking wise, I don't think Oscar is a good (c) choice. Also, I may choose not to have 3 Everton and swap Barkley for Januzaj. Also, with 2 Arsenal MF, I would have Suarez/Sturridge over Giroud.

agree with brutus. And two swan-mids +defender may be too much. Both probably good value in the upcoming fixtures, but i would've wanted either rvp or suarez in my team, and michu>hernandez is a good way to fund for the extra spent in front three.

I'd find a way to rotate Boruc with someone if his fixtures worsen. He's still tremendous value even if the fixtures aren't great.

Also, while Giroud is a pick you won't go wrong with, I think a front 3 of:

Lukaku Benteke Suarez is going to be absolutely unbeatable till the new year*.

*the added benefit of these 3 are that you can't really substitute any of these for midfield coverage from their teams unlike Giroud and Walcott perhaps...

Also about Poyet, does he rotate players a lot?

He did at Brighton, especially wingers...but that may have been because he didn't fully trust them. The defence and DM spots were fairly rigid. Also we didn't have a single great striker for much of his time so the strikers rotated alot.

If I WC right this second I could have this team (slight attacking variation of yours). I'd love to have this one over that team though (if only they all were declared fit):

      Boruc, £4m

Can always swap him out for Oscar/Hazard/Mata later but at £9.6 and playing for Arsenal he might be good value.

Pretty similar to the MF I am looking at having right now with my WC.

I'm veering towards a front 3 of Lukaku, Benteke and Sturridge. Defensively only Terry on that list.

I also wouldn't touch Sunderland players. No such thing as an easy schedule when you are bottom of the league and only 1 draw in 7 games.

Swansea defence is a bit of a teaser too. Have had Vorm and even in the so called easier games he's beeb quite disappointing really. I think its the curse of Europa League. Other than Michu I'm not sure I want any more Swans than that. I think Stoke defender would be better option, Huth or Cameron maybe.

Interesting you are sticking with Ramsey. I really think Ozil is hugely overpriced for what he gives you. An even more expensive David Silva.

Interesting timing for this. I've had GW10 marked as the real tipping point where fixtures stiffen for some top teams - Liverpool, for example - whereas others, like Chelsea, take a turn for the better. I would have thought then would be the time to be planning for, not making wholesale changes now.

Oscar and Benteke in for me then, I'm thinking.

Best team for the next 6 weeks IMHO :

      Vorm Cech

Baines Chico Ivanovic Mertesacker Celustka/O Shea

      Barkley Michu Oscar Giacherini Walcott

      Lukaku Giroud Benteke

Bony could turn out to be a decent option though

Does this supercede the outcome of Dig Dunc's Breaking the Template part II? 😉

Few thoughts on your RMT options.

Seriously? Palace GK or defence? Ha ha. I'd suggest Villa as they have favourable fixtures from 11-15.

Prefer AJ to Giaccherini - streaky but if he starts scoring add quickly then get rid of him a few weeks later. Ki is the DM who can pass at Sunderland. He might be key (sorry!) to a resurgence in form as he can create as well as score the odd goal. He's worth adding to the watch-list and analysing the stats on.

Chelsea mids remain a minefield. At some point Hazard will show up on a weekly basis, hopefully when they get a pen every other week and Lampard is rested those days! Oscar a safer option right now but TBH I think I'd prefer the steady returns of Citeh's Silva even though not a C option. Five potential C's is enough!

Sturridge over Giroud. Podolski is coming back soon and Giroud hasn't had a break all season. With Cazorla only just returning fro injury himself they aren't going to sit him down and put Podolski on the left instead.

I would not have Vorm, as Chico is a better prospect. Therefore I would go for Speroni/Krul. I won't go for Terry, as I don't believe that he is nailed on. Also, I would want Mertesacker. It seems to me silly to avoid Clarke in this scenario. I also much prefer Gabbidon who, I hope, will be repaired shortly.

Michu and Barkely are no-brainers, and I would have 2 Arsenal too. My Chelsea man over six would be Ramires - I don't see Oscar playing much next match.

My Forwards would be: Lukaku, Rooney and Sturridge, as I believe that form is much more important for Forwards than elsewhere, and I also believe that Giroud is a donkey.

      Speroni/Krul
      Baines, Mertesacker, Chico, Clarke, Gabbidon
      Michu(c), Barkley, Özil(c), Ramsey, Ramires
      Lukaku(c), Rooney(c) and Sturridge(c)

      🙂

Anyone think DDG could be a decent GK option being overlooked by everyone?

    Also, Begovic and Howard too.

Just too expensive with GKs being the most useless options this year.

Ruddy another option. Rotates well with Vorm on fixtures up to the January WC

With Pienaar back and all the Deulofeu talk any Mirallas owners gettin a bit worried? Was gonna keep him for a while but finally got a free transfer to swap him to Barkley if required

Sooner or later Deulofeu will get his chance to start though whether LW or RW is another matter. Strange deal with Barca means that the more he plays the cheaper the loan deal is.

Used my wildcard 2 weeks ago, and if I was to have another now I'd completely change my team. Oh how things change.

Is it ever a sensible decision to hold a transfer if more than one of your squad is injured? I currently have Brady and Davies, but I'm happy with the rest of my team and I'll only want them back when fit.

No doubts about my XI, and Fonte on the bench who will start but just has a poor fixture.

Well it would be busier if FFS as a whole was doing better collectively.

Anyone else think that doubling or tripling up on SOT defence is a bad decision with their fixtures coming up

Doubling not bad given the value that Clyne represents, I would not go triple

Clyne & Boruc enables good cash distribution throughout squad.

Doubling is fine but don't triple up on them. They won't keep up this tight defense forever imo!
