I've had 3 bad years of FF but I've changed tack a bit this season:

I mostly disregard advice on here, which is largely about 4 and 8 point hits;

I check very closely likely price rises on FPL, trying to jump on bandwagons before they set off.

I've made transfers mostly early in the week instead of waiting for Friday/Saturday.

I'm not saying I'm doing great but maybe better than the ususal tactic.

PS: a WC in January looks useless when you have so many players that have gained in value and would lose you money to trade them in.

  I like the way you think if you're taking a pro-hit, pre-bandwagoner, early week transfer stance.
  
  I too have made some tactical changes as you describe, but only in part. And not just to try and improve my score, but to be a little ahead of the curve. Be the market and tactics leader rather than a follower. I also tend to read a lot of the advice and opinions on here and try to take the temperature of the DZ just by absorbing it all and then coming up with a consensus "DZ hivemind" opinion that does factor into the decisions I wind up making in FPL.
  
  As for Jan. WC, yes, you may 'lose' some money, but you don't have to look at it as a cleanout of your squad. Perhaps only 3-4-5 transfers are made to get rid of dead weight, injured folks, overpriced assets.
