With Gameweek 23 done and dusted it’s time to reassess our Sky teams using the usual info, including the Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, the bonus point beneficiaries and the current market trends. As always, we also look ahead to the forthcoming fixtures, offering our preferred captain setup for Gameweek 24 and keeping one eye on Gameweek 25.

Gameweek 23 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players twho won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man-of-the-Match award.

FixtureMoTM
Sunderland vs SouthamptonJack Cork
Arsenal vs FulhamSanti Cazorla
Crystal Palace vs StokeYannick Bolasie
Man City vs CardiffYaya Toure
Norwich vs HullRobert Snodgrass
West Ham vs NewcastleYohan Cabaye
Liverpool vs Aston VillaRon Vlaar
Swansea vs TottenhamEmmanuel Adebayor
Chelsea vs Man UnitedSamuel Eto’o
West Brom vs EvertonKevin Mirallas

The awards this week were unsurprisingly once again mostly attributed to midfielders, with seven in total claiming the MoTM award. The others were awarded to two forwards and one defender. Yaya Toure picked up his fourth of the season and now sits top of the midfield rankings overall with 156 points. Eden Hazard, who sits in second place overall with 149 points, has the most MoTM awards, with eight to his name.

Gameweek 23 Bonus Points

Five goalkeepers managed five saves or more – Tim Howard, Jack Butland, Adrian, David Marshall and Vito Mannone were the top shot-stoppers. Mannone produced seven saves which was the largest number for the week and has now joined four other goalkeepers at the top of the bonus point table, who are all sat on an additional ten points.

In defence, a total of 11 players gathered bonus, six for tackles and five for passes completed – Angel Rangel, Ashley Williams, Chico and Jordi Amat, all of Swansea, managed to gather bonus points for passing as their style of football continues to be favoured by the bonus system. Full-back Joel Ward has now been joined by centre-back Chico as the top defenders for bonus – both have 18 additional points.

In midfield, 17 players earned bonus points – five for tackling and 12 for passing. Fulham centre-midfielder Scott Parker was the closest to achieving both as he missed out by just one tackle. Newcastle midfield enforcer Cheick Tiote is the bonus point darling, with his 32 additional points putting him top of the overall standings.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout Members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

NameTeamValue% of Managers
NegredoMan City8.65.56%
RamseyArsenal5.85.44%
LovrenSouthampton5.25.41%
BarkleyEverton4.35.18%
NasriMan City6.34.17%

Once again, injuries are the main reason for this week’s top five for transfers out. Lovren, Barkley and Nasri remain sidelined, though Ramsey is back for Arsenal’s trip to Southampton. Negredo is looking to recover from the shoulder injury sustained at West Ham last midweek, though his departure from Fantasy teams is no doubt also affected by Sergio Aguero’s return to action.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
AgueroMan City9.86.91%
JanuzajMan United4.24.66%
CabayeNewcastle6.64.02%
HazardChelsea8.83.77%
LallanaSouthampton5.93.70%

As mentioned, Aguero’s immediate return to scoring form has Fantasy managers rushing to acquire his services – a scenario we’ve already seen in the FPL game. Cabaye and Lallana’s mid-price consistency is making a persuasive case for many, whilst Januzaj’s recent run of starts for United has heightened the youngster’s budget appeal.

Gameweek 24 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the captaincy choices for Gameweek 24 we will have to settle for just two captains as there is no Monday night game this week.

Our Strategy:
Luis Suarez (Everton at Home) β†’ Emmanuel Adebayor (Man City at Home)

It looks like Luis Suarez will be the popular choice again on Tuesday 28 as his form at Anfield suggests he will return big once more – for those looking for a slight differential, Wayne Rooney looks a great alternative option at home to Cardiff if he gets the nod to start.

For the matches played on Wednesday 29, we opt for a captain change to Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor – whilst most would argue Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is a better choice as he plays at home to West Ham a quick glance at Gameweek 25 shows that Adebayor plays on Saturday February 1 away to Hull whilst Hazard doesn’t feature until Monday 3 when the Blues make their way to Man City.

Of course if you have a surplus of transfers you could still go for Hazard vs West Ham and prepare for Gameweek 25 by using a transfer in order to maximize your captains.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

I don't get the double Southampton thing... They've just lost their best CB and don't have many good home fixtures left. I'll probably get Yoshida for a while, but wouldn't want to be banking on their defence every week.

Had been planning on going for a big name (Cech/Szczesny/Hart) and a non-player but given the inevitable fixture chaos I think it's wise to have playing backup in all positions. Haven't got any further than that in my thinking though!

Never understood premium GKers. Just look at the PPG of all the GKers.

        Jussi – 4.9
        Sir Chesney – 4.6
        Mannone – 4.5
        Begovic – 4.5
        Howard – 4.4
        Boruc – 4.4
        Adrian – 4.2
        Foster – 4.2

Then comes the rest of the premium keepers. At a MUCH higher price.

Save points and lack of baps for CS skewers the whole thing. Premium defenders and premium GKs are vastly different, not sure it's supposed to be that way...

Add to that no attacking returns either like many premium defenders. Premium GKs should be cheaper, is what I'm saying.

Yep, it was just something I was toying with based on the historic trend of the big teams tightening up at this stage of the season. I don't think I've ever owned an expensive keeper to actually try it out though!

I did own de Gea second half of last season and it was amazing, but not often will the big teams go on a run like that. Also I'd probably be better off going cheap GKers and getting a defender instead of him, so... yeah, cheap GKs is the way to go.

    GW23 Preview & Tips:

    http://elitefpl.blogspot.ca/2014/01/gameweek-23-preview-tips.html

For those asking why I didn't include Hazard in captain picks... simply because Chelsea always have a hard time with West Ham. Despite that, Hazard is really inconsistent FPL-wise, and you just never know. He can get 2 or 15.

I have more confidence in the other 4 I selected over him. If I had a 5th, it would probably be him.

    Goodnight all.

on the point that Chelsea always have a hard time with West Ham, here are Chelsea's recent EPL fixtures vs West Ham.

      23-11-13 West Ham 0 - 3 Chelsea
      17-03-13 Chelsea 2 - 0 West Ham
      01-12-12 West Ham 3 - 1 Chelsea
      23-04-11 Chelsea 3 - 0 West Ham
      11-09-10 West Ham 1 - 3 Chelsea
      13-03-10 Chelsea 4 - 1 West Ham

Aside from the 1-3 loss Away, Chelsea pretty much own West Ham and win comfortably at home. Not to say you are wrong, as you do bring up fair points about whether he's captain material.

Just to share a balanced view with regards to the statement that chelsea ALWAYS have a hard time against West Ham. you're a respected poster and no doubt many will follow your recommendations - just that I do feel Hazard is a good pick this week.

How can VP be deemed to be a 'solid' captaincy pick? The guy has not players for donkey's years and has no form whatsoever. A massive punt at best, and that's being extremely generous.

My midfield is currently Hazard, Cabaye, Yaya, Eriksen, Jedinak.

I've already gone -4 to get Aguero in.

Would you play Jedinak or take another hit to go Cabaye > Ramsey.

To compound the problem I have Coleman and Chester in defence with the non playing Burner as my only sub if I play Jedinak.

    Help!

No freebies I'm afraid - he'll be flagged red and stop getting points just like if he was suspended/injured. You'll need to transfer him out in the normal way.

Hi, Would Mata's assist potential take a hit with RvP taking the corners? Or will corner duties be shared?

If RVP takes the corners, definitely. Rooney's been the best set-piece deliverer this season though, so who knows how the duties will be shared. Nothing to keep Rooney taking them from both sides, or does Moyes only curl corners one way?

Pretty close. It was under the old rules where touches in the box by opposition players didn't mata. He'd get assists from like 2 ricochets off of opposition defenders.
