Yesterday we offered further congratulations to Chris McGurn who bettered over two million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to win the crown, but he is just one of a few Fantasy Football Scout champions deserving of a round of applause.

With the untimely demise of the “Can You Kick It” game we took it on ourselves -after a World Cup dry run- to take up Metro Fantasy Football on their offerings as our “bit on the side” and now we have our first official champion.

I begrudgingly abdicate my World Cup throne to a more than worthy winner by the name of Pascal Evans

Pascal’s late surge up the rankings has not only won him the Fantasy Football Scout title (pocketing himself a fancy iPad machine courtesy of the folks at Metro for his efforts) but he also has the small matter of business of finishing second in the overall rankings and pocketing £2,500 hard cash in the process.

If anyone -be it the girlfriend, wife or misunderstanding friends- say there isn’t anything to be gained from playing Fantasy Football then I’m sure Pascal has two thousand and five hundred answers to that question tucked in his back pocket. Even those devout FPL managers need know that there is certainly gold in them there hills.

Added congratulations must also go to the unfortunate Andy Potter (otherwise known as Aldershot Rejects on our site) who is sat in a highly commendable fifth place overall but having lead for many weeks likely won’t have recovered from his late stumble just yet. My colleague Big Dunc also deserves a pat on the back for his 99th place. The swine.

So congratulations to those guys and one more time especially for Pascal, who is no doubt counting his money while playing an extra-large game of Angry Birds as you read this. Well done.

Further congratulations (and details) on our FPL Head to Head leagues will be with you next week as well whoever decides to pilfer another of my titles and win the Fantasy Football Scout Champions League crown this Saturday evening.

For what it's worth this is my main mini league, and jsu wanted to show it, as I have two teams!!
Dont hate me, it was an experiment that went wrong.
My winning team was balanced and this is what I concentrated on, but my second team started off as a big guns, and nobodies experiment that failed miserably!!

However, with my second team I hardly spent any time thinking about stuff, just went with feelings, and took hit all the time, and had a storming end to the season from my crazy starting place.

Not sure what im saying, but I guess too much thinking doesnt necessarily help your team, sometimes its better to log on, go with your gut and captain hunches.

In fact could somebody Greasemonkey my B team as it would be interesting??

Had a fairly average FPL season - won my mini-league months ago but finished with a disappointing rank compared to last season... however, my moment of glory has arrived; finishing 2nd in the Popbitch League (was leading for months) and getting a shout out on the message board:

Andy of Aldershot Rejects I agree that The Metro game was down to luck to a large extent. Andrew Hill was leading most of the season. I do not think there is too much luck to be in the top 1000 or so but after that some luck is required.I have played FPL for 5 years and have 4 top 1000 finishes but have never been anywhere near winning FPL. This year I tried Metro for the first time but until about March it was 10 minutes on a Saturday morning and I was not that clear on the point system. Once I realised I had a chance then it became less enjoyable. I was too nervous on Sunday to listen to the games and fortunately I was doing a running event and could avoid the games and checked the points later. However, I thought I had lost when I heard at 3.45 Glen Johnson was not playing for some reason. Had he started I would have won the top prize(assuming the winner was not equally stupid as me). I suspect that everybody, including the winner, will have had unlucky moments on the final day.I was lucky with Lescott and O'Hara but Johnson did not play and I should have picked Berbatov rather than Van Persie as captain. How Andy did you know I had Lescott ?

By looking at the mini-league and clicking on the team names you could see the team names, although this only works in mini-leagues.

It is interesting, for most of the season I was like you spending 10 minutes on a Saturday morning, I became more interested in February.

The comment about luck was tongue in cheek; I actually think there is less luck in the Metro game overall because there is a range of ways of scoring goals. A player in FPL can bring out three great saves from the keeper and get nothing, in Metro they get points for shots on target.

On reflection, Lescott was a much better choice for the DGW and the remainder of the season than Kolorov who was always a rotation-risk, mind you two goals in two games including the one versus Bolton did take the biscuit.

Anyway, well done - enjoy the iPad and the cash!

Pascal - it's easy to spot some individual players in a team when there is just one game played midweek. Just look at the points total difference and match it to the players' live scoring. I knew you had Lescott.

You're right - everyone at the top had a few sob stories, or ifs and buts, or led the table at some point. When I was 1st, had I left Dempsey as captain in Fulham's double game week, instead of stupidly transferring it to Zamora at the last minute before the deadline, I would have walked it. Better still, should have ignored Zamora altogether!

First time I played Metro or FPL. Started FPL two weeks late so never bothered checking the national ranking, just made sure I won my works league.

Metro game is more down to luck, or rather the points system averages out because it rewards so many different things. They are going to make the game even worse next season by introducing automatic substitutions, which IMHO helps people who don't do their team news research and penalises those who do. I've put my views on their Facebook page, as they seem to change things based on suggestions from just a few players.

With reference to an earlier discussion, how does playing a wildcard early (as suggested) help increase team value?

It is a bit of a myth I think. You only increase value by playing the wildcard if you bring in players that rise .2 between gameweeks. Not too many of those. If they do rise that much, they are probably players you want to keep, not sell right away for a profit. I wouldn't play the wildcard primarily to increase team value, but rather to sort out a team that needs to be sorted out. Often, the early wildcard is necessary due to bad GW1 selections (Boselli, Petrov, etc)

Another great season JMS, nicely done and good to be back in form again after last year I'd say?

I hear you re bad early selections (oh the pain, the pain I had almost blanked those names out of my memory bank).

If you want to make money from your wc you have to play it early in the gw (after the deadline before the price changes that night) and then you have to hope some randomers a la harewood do some extra ordinary things that gw and merit a lot of people transfering them in leading to double price rises.

An international gw is also good for this as it helps you deal with any unexpected injuries as well as the longer transfer period generally leading to more transfers (not an awfull lot extra though).

It has also been shown (I dont have the figures to hand) that more transfers are made in the early part of the season (this could possibly be due to newbies taking multiple point hits chasing last weeks points or maybe just because there are more active players at the start?)

In short you can make cash by playing the wc early but you need to be fortunate to have some useless players score brilliantly the week you play it that you can bring in and take out before setting your team to rights. Although cash is handy (especially near the start) this should not be a primary reason for playing the wc as it can often work out that after you have played it there is a flat gw where nobody does anything incredible and therefore there are no risers you can transfer in short term to make cash.

Bit long winded but there's my twopence worth

Thanks Dino. Much better than last year. I think I mentioned at the beginning of this season that I would pay less attention to the comments/suggestions on this site and focus on the tweets and articles.

Excellent summary of wildcard strategy. You are correct. There are more transfers early in the season and international gw is a good time to use it (if for no other reason than making a lot of transfers helps with the boredom of a two week fpl break!).

haha yeah the boredom can be a killer, trying hard not to think about when fpl will be back up again as I know it will only make the wait longer.

I think thats the key alright. Just spend the time on your team strategy and keeping informed with the injury news etc and you'll do fine. I quite like the whole forum thing and enjoy the interaction almost as much (if not more maybe) than the actual game itself.

Maybe next year I will be one of these silent types who storms to first place overall??

Re ; Ashley Young to Man Utd.

I know the Daily Mail have a bad rep for inaccurate transfer rumours but I reckon they could be spot on here.

Young has a lot of detractors but I rate him highly even though he has probably stagnated at Villa for a season or two now. I reckon he is exactly the sort of player that Purple Nose could nurture (ie. still young and undoubtedly talented).

I also don't buy into the concept that Utd don't need him because they have Nani and Valencia (and Park and Giggs) already. When a team is pushing for top honours on several fronts it makes sense to have quality back up in most positions.

I'm just gutted he will probably choose Utd over Liverpool.

If we don't get Young, which looks likely, I would like to see Dalglish/ Damien Comolli go for Hazard/ Downing/ NZogbia/ Mata as our main winger summer targets (Carroll needs service).
These are quite realistic targets for LFC IMO.

A lot of United fans are looking for a hollywood signing, but do we actaully need one? I know there's one missing, but we've relied on a squad this year, a squad that has done almost as good as possible. He'll give more squad competition, he's someone who can play in a few positions, at a good age, and can give us some decent set piece potential. I'll be glad to see him at OT.

ashley young wouldnt help us that much when we have 4 wingers (altho giggs is more central now) hes still a winger and he cant play every game anyway

if were going to play 4-4-2 we need to have giggs/nani/valencia/park on the wings rotating along with either fletcher/carrick in defensive mid and an attacking midfielder like sneijder/iniesta (aint gona happen) or eden hazard

Major overhaul needed. Think the boss might have just cottoned onto this fact.

Fabregas is gone. Eboue, Happy to see this bunch leave - Bendtner, Arshavin, Rosicky, Almunia, Diaby & Denilson. That should free up the wage bill a little.

              Nasri I'd like to keep.

I'm no United fan but I don't think there is any chance you will have any possession apart from the small periods in the second half when Barcelona might slow down.

The quality of movement and passing in the Manchester United midfield is not good enough to cope with the pressing of Barcelona. I reckon they will need to go for pace, strength and expansive attacks to win it - the central midfield is already lost.

Stop posting so much sense Garg 😛

I fully agree, you have to beat Barcelona with only 35% of the possession. A pacey direct game could do it for United. Rooney and Hernandez could do a lot of damage to Puyol and Pique with their pace and movement.
United can't be afraid to attack down the flanks either, you have to put the pressure on the Barca fullbacks or they'll be attacking you.

Park Ji Sung could play a part.

Fit enough to check Alves and offer an attacking threat, too.

It's just exploiting the money back special on Paddy Power to get what is essentially a free £45 bet on Barcelona winning the CL in 90 minutes.

They're allowing up to £100 in bets refund, if Barcelona win the game in 90 minutes. Although only in markets like first scorer, correct score etc...

So if you back all realistic scorelines, where Barcelona don't win, you can secure a profit of £45 if Barcelona don't win, and you get all the money back if they do.

        0-0: £19.38 @ 13/2
        0-1: £14.52 @ 9/1
        0-2: £8.05@ 17/1
        0-3: £2.59 @ 55/1
        0-4: £0.64 @ 225/1
        1-1: £23.99 @ 5/1
        1-2: £9.60 @ 14/1
        1-3: £4.04 @ 35/1
        1-4: £1.15 @ 125/1
        2-2: £9.60 @ 14/1
        2-3: £2.84 @ 50/1
        2-4: £0.82 @ 175/1
        3-3: £1.89 @ 75/1
        3-4: £0.48 @ 300/1
        4-4: £0.41 @ 350/1

Total staked: £100.00, minimum profit if Barcelona don't win in 90: £43.64

I'm personally whacking that £43.64 on Barcelona to win @ 21/20. A) Because I think they will, and B) I don't want to be supporting United whatsoever!

Thing that worries me about the bet is that the bookies are within their rights to void it if they think you're taking the piss and doing something that gives you a guaranteed win. Always better to do at least part of the bet with betfair or something (like when you said about also backing Barca to win).

Yeah, I'm doing all the correct score bets on Paddy Power (obviously!), and then backing Barca to win on Stan James with the guaranteed £43.64.

I'm thinking of doing it with the £100 odds above (I worked them out myself after we established we couldn't do the £200 stake due to maximum refund of £100).

            However two points...

            1. Isn't it worth covering backs once more by adding a few more bets on 5 goals scored by United. Imagine if some miracle it was a game where United won 5-1 or 5-3 or something, then you would lose your £100 stakes. Would only cost a few pence to cover those extra bets due to odds being 500/1 I think.

            2. If United win in extra time you gain no profit (assuming you put a £43.64 bet on Barcelona to win in 90 mins) - correct?

              1. Yeah, I'll probably have a look at doing that.

              2. Backing Barcelona at 21/20 with the potential profits also only applies to 90 minutes.

              Basically, if Barcelona win: I win £43.64 x 21/20 = £45.82

If it's a draw/United win at 90: I win/lose nothing (give or take a few pennies caused by the inaccuracies thanks to only be able to bet to two decimal places).

              But I'm happy with that.

Yes, I got my maths right in my head and did my backing when I got in from work. There's no doubting I am "cautious" about obvious repercussions, they most know it's statistically circumventable so, you know - the house always wins.

Well, as I've done anyway, I've bet £70 across the board on correct scores and (under the offer) I am either going to get my £70 back or "win" £100 on predicting scores.

There is no single way PP can make a penny off my betting as is.

It's like card counting*, basically. There's nothing actually "illegal" about counting cards, but it doesn't stop the casino's taking you into the basement and beating you with the sharp end of broom.

*though, as Gargamel says, it's as much for publicity for PP and with the limit of betting they obviously may think the amount of pay-outs they'll give to someone with a boring lunch-break and an eye for numbers might come under potential profits/advertising/all that jazz by comparison.

I see, I thought you meant it in that way.

I'm very much contemplating opening a new account with Ladbrokes and betting £10 on United/Barcelona HT/FT (20/1) and then using free £10 bet for joining on Barcelona/United HT/FT for 30/1. Both tasty returns, and all for a £10 outlay (which gets potentially taken from the £45 profit after doing spread bets on correct scores from PP) 😀

I think you guys are onto something great here and that it's a kind offer from PP's side.

Occasionally the bookies actually do nice things, I've seen them refund bets placed on games they thought ended unfairly plenty of times for example.

Then again, with the massive amount of money they make it's probably good PR. Did a quick estimation on how much money a gambling site makes and it did my head in.

The first figure is the percentage of "perfect captaincy choice" that you achieved, i.e. the sum of the points from your highest scoring player each week is 453, and the sum of the points (before doubling) that your chosen capatin scored is 243.

The bench figure is less meaningful - basically you had 11% of your points each week on the bench.

Backing Scotland big tonight at ~1.9, strong team against a weak Wales team.

McGregor, Whittaker, Berra, G Caldwell, Crainey, McCormack, Brown, Adam, Morrison, Naismith, Miller

Myhill, Eardley, Morgan, Blake, Taylor, Dorman, Tudur-Jones, King, Easter, Earnshaw, Vokes

Had a bad day yesterday so hoping for some better success now, I reckon these are great odds for a game Scotland should win.
