Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Nacer Chadli bags a brace while Emmanuel Adebayor serves up a goal and assist as Spurs hammer QPR at the Lane. Juan Mata nets for United and Seb Larsson is in the points again for Sunderland, while Bojan Krkic is benched and James Chester sees red as Stoke grab a point at 10-man Hull.

Eriksen Blanks in Spurs Rout
Spurs continued their early-season form with a 4-0 home demolition of QPR yesterday. A double from Nacer Chadli, allied with a pair of assists from Erik Lamela underlines the growing number of midfield options under Mauricio Pochettino, although Christian Eriksen, with over 12% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership, again failed to get amongst the points. Up front, Emmanuel Adebayor continues to get the nod for league matches and a goal and assist from the Togo international suggests he could yet be the standout candidate in the mid-price forwards bracket.

Dier Does it Again
With Kyle Walker still sidelined and Kyle Naughton suspended, the summer signing was shifted to right-back to accommodate Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs defence yesterday. Dier replicated his goal-scoring exploits of Gameweek 1 by netting once again, and while there’s no doubt the competition for places is heating up at the back, his threat in the box is making it very difficult for Pochettino to leave him out right now. Despite a home encounter with Liverpool next weekend, the bandwagon looks set to continue over the next seven days.

Austin Sidelined with Hamstring Problem
Charlie Austin’s hamstring injury absence allowed Matt Philips to partner Loic Remy up front for the R’s yesterday. Harry Redknapp’s side now have home fixtures against Sunderland and Stoke on either side of a trip to United but with their form has been far from convincing. Austin owners may be tempted by a trade to Steven Naismith – priced at 5.1 to the QPR man’s 6.0, the Scot has picked up a goal and maximum bonus in each of his two appearances thus far and looks poised for continued pitch time – at least until Everton enter the market for new attacking options.

Mata Opens His Account
Sold by over 94,000 FPL managers last week after an opening day blank, the Spaniard picked up the points in United’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland. While Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie toiled up top in a disappointing display by the visitors, Mata’s strike, allied with the maximum bonus points, underlined his potential in the role in “the hole” behind the front two. In spite of an uninspiring display from United, Rooney and Mata owners will likely be persuaded to hold as Louis van Gaal’s side now square up to each of the promoted sides in the next three Gameweeks. Those considering Van Persie may choose to monitor for now, with the Dutchman looking some way short of full sharpness – he failed to register a single attempt on goal before being replaced midway through the second period.

Larsson On the Radar
The Swede provided the equaliser for Jack Rodwell’s strike to maintain his impressive early-season form yesterday. Larsson grabbed a goal and couple of bonus points in last week’s draw at West Brom and has now climbed to fourth in the FPL midfield standings on 14 points. Despite a very kind 5.5 price tag, the Black Cats man currently sits in just 3% of sides right now, but with QPR, Burnley, Swansea and Stoke in the next five, he could be set for further investment.

Chester Sees Red in Tigers Stalemate
Drafted in by almost 130,000 FPL managers on the back of a 15-point return in Gameweek 1, the Hull centre-half is set to miss next week’s trip to Villa. Chester lasted just 13 minutes before being dismissed for a professional foul but, despite playing most of the match with 10 men, the hosts still managed to pick up a draw against Stoke after Nikica Jelavic opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw. Tom Ince retained his spot alongside the Croatian up front although he was forced to drop back into midfield once Chester was dismissed and was eventually replaced on 55 minutes as the Tigers looked to shore things up further. With West Ham, Newcastle and Palace also still to follow in the next five, Ince still remains a viable budget midfield option if Steve Bruce fails to secure new faces before the transfer window closes.

Bojan Benched for Potters
The Spaniard dropped to the bench for Stoke’s first away trip of the season. Owned by over 16% of FPL managers, Bojan was introduced just before the break as Mark Hughes attempted to take advantage of the 10-man Tigers but he failed to make an impact as the Potters struggled to break down the hosts’ rearguard. With Naismith looking increasingly tempting as an alternative, Bojan already looks on borrowed time for a number of Fantasy managers – with a trip to Man City up next, plenty look poised to part company over the next few days.

Finished the week on 57, so not too bad!

2 players that don't seem to be doing much for me though are Bojan & Caulker. I'm expecting Bojan to be the priority to get rid & expect most will say for Naismith, is that wise though with Everton playing Chelsea next?

Naismith was the only scorer when Everton beat Chelsea at Goodison last season.

Hmm food for thought there then!

Only other strikers around the same price with decent fixtures coming up are Long, Fletcher & Wickham.

Got 1.5 itb but would rather keep hold of that until I play my wc

If you want to catch the price rise, go for him now I think. Bear in mind Everton will have only two good fixtures after Chelsea

Not too fussed about Naismith's price rising more Bojan's dropping tbh.

Have 2 FT's and will use at least one of them but don't know what to do. Any ideas?

    De Gea - Gilks

    Terry - Caulker - Naylor - PVA - Wisdom

    Ramsey - Mata - Eriksen - Siggy - Marney

Rooney - Diego Costa - Dzeko

Don't really want to trade Eriksen, probably giving Caulker another week and wondering how to get Hazard in.

Does anyone think that the changes to price changes are being done by FPL to help casual players and "level the playing field" I.e.

    1. Making it harder for prices to rise / fall
    2. Denying access to the data for TFPL and Fiso

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What key lesson have you learned this week?

This week I've learned that Ivanovic really is worth the extra money. ManU v Swansea really wasn't a blip. I've also learned that I need spurs attacking coverage- but which one?

Not sure on that Ivano point. Yes he gets attacking returns but it won't happen consistently. The other big CBs at Chelsea haven't got them yet but they will

It's happened consistently so far - he could have got the assist vs Burnley and he got one this weekend. Very few full-backs get forward like Ivanovic and he has the set-piece goal threat and clean sheets. He's the only must-have big hitting defender, for me.

He'll have his moments but I still don't quite see him outscoring Ivan over the season. The problem with Baines is that you have to catch his attacking returns. With Ivan, you're always getting clean sheets regardless.

Think Coleman is better than Baines as a fantasy asset now. Same price but regularly scores goals whereas Baines gets assists and the odd dead ball goal

An attacking full back, who is also a huge threat on set pieces and part of a solid defence...about as good as they come. Plus Ivan seems to have found a new confidence in shooting from distance. He'll probably get pens too now.

My point stands. He gets forward loads, but he does that every season. We know full well it won't be consistent, he will get maybe 5 assists, 5 goals max. Sure that's great and worth it, but that's at a max. Draw your attention to Glen Johnson for example, should be amazing but isn't. Past seasons should serve as evidence that he wont be far ahead, if at all, of Terry and Cahill

Maybe but I think Chelsea having a finisher can make a difference. This seasons crosses are more effective than last seasons because there's more chance of an end product.

can't say there wasn't any warnings about it though. Alot of logical arguments were made -

          1) plays for Stoke, 2) no PL experience, 3) lightweight

But many chose to believe he is the ultimate value striker and that Stoke is the new Barca under Mark Hughes.

No sympathy for Bojan owners imo.

Here is what I learnt from all the 9 matches so far:

-Newcastle defense looks solid, Krul is better value for money than DDG and Begovic

-All of Chelsea's attacking assets are well worth their investment, with Hazard being the most explosive of the lot and Costa and Fab being more consistent

-Crystal Palace defense is a no go area for me until a new manager brings some stability

-Southampton will struggle to score as many goals as they did last season, their defense looks solid though

-Bony isn't 100 % match fit and Siggy is the go to man from Swansea

-Everton haven't come out of the blocks firing just yet. Lukaku isn't 100 % fit and their defense looks rusty. Ramsey will continue to produce points week in week out, a better option than Alexis as of now

-Stoke's defense is a no go area, and despite the fact that they have decent fixtures, I would be ditching Begovic as they conceded against 10 man Hull and Villa

-Spurs look a different team under Poch, with Lamela being the go to man. Lamela was more willing to get involved and was on corners as well, with Eriksen some times being happy to drop deep and dictate play

-Man Utd look rusty, their defense is in tatters and Rooney/Mata are the only ones that warrant investment

I did De Gea and Young out for Krul and Siggy for a hit last week...I'm up on the deal for the week, but crucially am happy for the long term having those two players - Krul in particular.

    What to do with bojan?

The transfer to Naismith seems to be knee jerky to me especially with chelsea as their next game.

No striker under 8.5 appeals to me, so tempted to bench until I have more funds.

Price change sites are all messed up, so is Naismith expected to rise and bojan fall? Still may hold despite this.

He will fall by the end of the week, 100%.

Probably just the 0.1 though. And not convinced Naismith will rise any more.

knee jerking it must be, but with naismith current form, he surely will start everygame with everton. that said, ridding the bojango is a priority, i have 2 FT and spent it on getting rid of bojan before he dropped further. none other than naismith is a replacement i could consider

      so yeah, go for it

£31m for Shaw, £29m for Herrera, £37m for Mata, £16m Rojo and £64m for Di Maria. Total spend of £177m and that team is still probably not going to get top 4 let alone win the title.

direct conflict of 2 golden FPL rules

      1) pick players who play
      2) have a good bench

when you pick players who play, who gives 2 shats about a good bench? Especially 5th mid and 5th def. Would much rather a 4.5+4.0 respectively than a 5.0+4.5 who could come on if one of the 11 doesn't start.

    Option on this.
should I focus on getting the non starts replaced. Ie isgrove marriapa.
or just ignore them and maintain the decent players
any opinions on this team would be amazing

Ignore Isgrove unless you plan on heavily upgrading. Otherwise you've got 4.5 or 5.0 sat on the bench every week and the transfer won't score you any points.

Mariappa can be changed to a 4.5 defender who is likely to get you some points though.

He was benched for tactical reasons and possibly because of fatigue from midweek European tie.

He got the injury right at the death of the match and limped off. He left the hotel with a protective boot.

Even so, Wenger hasn't written him off for Wednesday but, as a Giroud owner, I fear a spell on the sidelines and Wenger doing his "optimistic" view on injuries.

I have made a spreadsheet that analyses players and helps you identify which are the best players to pick regarding form and value for money. It also shows you all scorers and assisters and what team they done it against. In addition it has all the results to date and all goals conceded.

It is totally upto date and I will try my best to keep it that way throughout the season.

Please feel free to use my spreadsheet and provide feedback or suggestions on how it could be improved or any errors you may find. I am also happy to answer any questions if you are unsure of something.

A for effort, but could you kindly explain what the different columns are for Def/Mid/Fwd calculations tabs?

      1. RabMac
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 8 months ago

In the GK calculations, Defender Calculations, Midfielder Calculations & Forward calculations you will see a table with all the players.

The columns in the table are:

        1. PPG = Points Per Game - Shows the average points a player gets each game.
        2. PPM = Points Per Million - Shows how many points a player gets for each million pound you spend - allows you to see who is good value for money and compare to other players
        3. PPMPG = Points Per Million Per Game - Shows how many points a player scores each game for each million pound you spend. - I feel this is a better indicator of who is best value for money.
        4. Points 4 Weeks = Points scored over last 4 game weeks - this helps you identify the most inform players over the last 4 weeks
        5. Performance Indicator = Shows if a player is below the average key performance indicator (low), above average but below high key performance indicator (average) and above high key performance indicator (high)

        ==================================================================
You use these tables to help identify a pool of good players to pick from and then you check the fixtures to see who to pick. You can also use these tables to see if your current players are performing well and if not you should ship them out. Ideally you want to have a full team of people who have high performance and good fixtures.

The person behind the FISO price change tool said that FPL has now hidden the data needed to predict price changes.

You can still see transfers in and transfers out for the round, so is there a possibility to do it manually?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting they do it manually because it would be too time consuming and would need a team on it to keep it up to date. However, if the transfers in and transfers out are accurate then we can work it out for ourselves if we know the algorithm for rises and drops.

Would save the WC - team is fine, would only get rid of Alexis, Jones & Austin
