With Gameweek 2 now behind us, our attentions turn to the upcoming schedule as we assess the forthcoming four to six Gameweeks. Our first instalment takes a look at those sides with more favourable fixtures, with the Tyne-Wear duo and struggling United afforded reasons for optimism:

SUNDERLAND

“involvement

Having performed admirably in their clash against Man United at the weekend, it’s two points from two matches now for Gus Poyet’s side, and a superb run of fixtures awaits the Black Cats in the weeks ahead. The visit of in-form Tottenham to the Stadium of Light in two weekends’ time will undoubtedly be a tough encounter, but that fixture sits in between trips to newly promoted QPR and Burnley, which are then followed by home showdowns against Swansea and Stoke.

The main source of points for the Black Cats so far has come from the midfield, with goals from Seb Larsson, Lee Cattermole and Jack Rodwell inspiring their side against West Brom and United. The former has set piece duties in his favour and also chipped in with an assist on Sunday afternoon to boost his prospects, though is the most expensive of the trio at 5.5 (compared to 4.5 and 5.0 respectively).

Up top, Steven Fletcher is yet to get his scoring tally underway, though has been fielded as the most advanced forward in his side’s opening two fixtures and looks most likely to benefit from the creativity of those in behind him. Sunderland’s defence, meanwhile, have maintained their budget appeal for this season, despite accumulating 11 shut-outs in their last league campaign. Vito Mannone (who totalled a noteworthy 134 points last year) is still first choice between the sticks and on offer for 4.5, though for the same price, Fantasy managers can acquire Patrick van Aanholt, whose strong performances at left-back since joining Poyet’s side from Chelsea in the summer have attracted our attentions.

MAN UNITED

“involvement

It’s a shame that Louis Van Gaal’s acknowledgement that he’s a slow starter with new clubs is holding so true, as United struggle to justify our heavy level of investment. Nonetheless, a strong set of opening fixtures continues for the Red Devils as they welcome QPR and West Ham to Old Trafford in their next six, with trips to Burnley, Leicester and West Brom also holding plenty of promise for the out-of-form Red Devils. Everton’s visit to the Theatre of Dreams in Gameweek 7 will be their first big test of the season, but Van Gaal will be optimistic that, by then, his side will have begun to click and better the performances evident in their loss to Swansea and 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Sunday.

The 12.5-priced Robin Van Persie made a somewhat unconvincing comeback against the Black Cats, and will be hoping to get back up to stride quickly to help his side overcome their current slump. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney remains the most popular player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with an incredible 46% ownership, though his team’s poor form has already seen over 40,000 managers jump ship since the weekend.

Subject to a mass exodus and a subsequent price drop to 8.9 last week, Juan Mata came back to haunt those who traded him out with a 10-point display against Sunderland – with the fixtures in his favour, the Spaniard could now cement himself as a key midfield option in the weeks ahead, though it remains to be seen how the potential signing of Angel Di Maria would affect the playmakers role in the side. Faith in United’s rearguard assets is understandably low, though Phil Jones’ displays in the first couple of Gameweeks have been reassuring, with an assist against Swansea indicative of his superior appeal over his defensive team-mates.

SOUTHAMPTON

“involvement

An opening-day defeat to Liverpool may not have been the ideal start for new manager Ronald Koeman, but the Saints performed well enough to convince many of their doubters that the season ahead may not be as doom-and-gloom as many had predicted. Whilst last Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with West Brom was hardly full of attacking verve, a clean sheet and first point of the campaign for Koeman’s side should give them some momentum ahead of a strong set of upcoming fixtures. Home matches against Newcastle, QPR and Sunderland hold plenty of promise for further defensive returns, with trips to West Ham, Swansea and Tottenham also featuring in their next six.

Currently the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL, Nathaniel Clyne burst onto radars with a goal against Liverpool on the opening weekend, though it was Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida who were the main beneficiaries on Saturday, after picking up three and two bonus points respectively. Fonte may be the most expensive of the trio at 5.5, but his penchant for acquiring bonus points, allied with his threat from set pieces, make him the most attractive asset in the Saints’ backline right now.

In midfield, James Ward Prowse will be looking to make the most of a share of set pieces, and at 5.0 the youngster could be a steal, whilst new signing Dusan Tadic will be hoping to build upon his debut assist against Liverpool. Up top, Koeman will be eager to see new boys Shane Long and Graziano Pelle build an understanding in the coming weeks – the former is up for grabs for just 6.0, and has the fixtures to cement his place in the side whilst Jay Rodriguez remains sidelined.

NEWCASTLE

“involvement

Two games and no goals for the Tyneside team doesn’t bode too well, but home fixtures against Crystal Palace and Hull City in the next three should provide them with a chance to get their tally up and running. On the other hand, a clean sheet against Aston Villa at the weekend has seen a number of their defensive options climb our Watchlist and, should they take advantage of their favourable fixture list, they may climb further still.

Between the sticks, Tim Krul is available for a mere 4.5 after a leaky campaign last time out and currently rests at the summit of our goalkeeper Watchlist. In defence, Fabricio Coloccini is available for the same price as Krul and picked up maximum bonus points in Saturday’s 0-0 draw to ensure he remains our defender of choice for Alan Pardew’s side.

Further up the field, Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have offered plenty of creativity and drive over Newcastle’s opening two fixtures without any returns to show for it, suggesting that Siem De Jong may be the attacking asset du jour. Returning from a calf injury at Villa Park for the final 20 minutes of the encounter, the 7.0-priced midfielder came closest to netting for his side and gave Fantasy managers an impressive first taste of his talents.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
Managerless, surrounded by controversy off the field, and with two defeats in their first two matches, Palace’s fortunes aren’t looking too great at the moment. Nonetheless, the Eagles have home encounters with Burnley and Leicester in their next four to turn things around, whilst this weekend’s trip to goalless Newcastle won’t hold too much fear. Joel Ward and co will be confident of clean sheets, then, whilst Jason Puncheon – now back from a one-match suspension – has the platform to find the form that saw his popularity surge towards the end of last season.

Stoke
A late equaliser from Ryan Shawcross against 10-man Hull City on Sunday brought the Potters their first point of the season, and once they are on the other side of this weekend’s trip to Man City on Saturday, Mark Hughes’ side will be looking to kick on as their fixture list (LEI, qpr, NEW, sun, SWA) picks up immensely. In goal, Asmir Begovic remains a popular pick with 9.4% ownership and could be primed to prove his worth, whilst Bojan Krkic’s legion of owners will be hoping the forward can shake off a knock and live up to his pre-season form by delivering the points.

Liverpool
Monday night’s defeat at the hands of Man City will have a few minds wondering whether Brendan Rodgers’ side really can maintain last season’s quality without a certain Uruguayan on board. Encounters with Tottenham and Everton in their next six will put the Merseyside outfit under the spotlight once again, though trips to West Ham and QPR, allied with the visits of Aston Villa and West Brom to Anfield hold promise for the attacking fortunes of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, both of whom will be eager to press on after their opening weekend goals against Southampton. With injury worries at the back, few will be willing to invest in the Reds until they show some signs of resilience.

I can't help but think Arsenal will struggle without Giroud.

They looked miserably bad without him in the first half against Everton.

I agree. Makes me think that a striker will be bought before the deadline. Remy or Bony might be a nice fit.

      Agreed, Sanchez can't do it...

He was out of place up top in the Everton game, 0 touches in the box...

They're just so soft. Without proper hold up play from a focal point they're lost.

It's causing me to think Ramsey's appeal as a captain prospect this week hasn't been carefully thought out.

As an Arsenal fan I am deeply concerned. Sanchez does have the potential to be very effective through the middle, but we are far off from being tactically prepared for this fundamental shift in focal point. He is also not 100% match fit and attuned to the team.

Having said all that I wouldn't be too concerned with Rambo - his instinct in front of goal and positioning make him fantasy gold and it wouldnt surprise me if he bagged a brace against a vulnerable Leicester.

Have to take Begovic out, but for whom?

    Current defence:
    Bego
    Terry, Jones, Coloccini, Wisdom, Duff

    A. Krul
    B. Forster
    C. Someone else

conceded against a toothless villa and 10-man Hull. Thought I might get at least one clean sheet by City game. He has the fixtures but Stoke's defence isn't looking good.

Stoke have nice upcoming fixture so I don't really suggest to waste your transfer on a keeper.

However you insist to to take Begovic out then Forster is the way to go. Just don't double up on defense.

the fact that i'm a spurs supporter. he is first-choice rb for england, has been first-choice rb for spurs for the last 3 seasons. no, he's not the best defender, but he does the job asked of him and is improving as each season passes..his attacking potential is why he'll start. yes, dier has scored two goals in two starts, but he was purchased as a back-up and i dare say that is what he shall remain.

No, he's not first choice RB for England. And even if he were that would be due to Roy Hodgson's lack of footballing nous. Dier is just as good if not better than Walker going forward and twice the defender. No way Poch benches him for Walker, especially considering Dier's form.

when fit i think he is..that's the only reason johnson has been picked of late. but yes, i do agree with you on the lack of knowledge old mate roy possesses. having only seen dier play two games, it's tough to give much info on him, but yes, he does possess skills both defending and going forward, but yes, we have only played west ham (with 10 men) and qpr. walker in my opinion, offer's a lot more going forward, his assist potential is only second to that of baines over the last few seasons. he also has the experience over dier. i just can't see dier starting ahead of him, especially when dier is a natural cb. i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree 🙂

Just thinking about ideas for about whole community champion thing for the scout picks. It could all get a bit political where candidates compete against one another to represent the community. I think the best candidate is the one who will seek feedback for a community scout picks team. Insie has already declared he will do that, and who better than a DZer who can discuss his team in the DZ where proper discussions can take place?

Let us DZers not compete against each other every week but all get behind one representative of the DZ for the scout picks. It'd be a bit like starting a FFS political party, the DZ party. Thoughts?

The thing is though that everyone can't join the DZ because many are asleep at this time. Its more about having a representative who is willing to discuss the community scout picks team. As we all know, the best time for such discussions are in the DZ.

It remains to be seen whether the DZ has enough voters. The process is a tad flawed in that those who post first will have an advantage. The DZ candidate is like declaring your candidacy after the polls have already been open for half a day...

I like the idea Ryan but we need to be careful of this slippery slope. If this goes well then it may create greater DZ identity which may lead to more DZ sponsored activity. Before long we will be seeking independence from the main forum and trying to form our own state. Are we sure we are ready for this independence?

      Definitely considering it!

Chester > Robertson intrigues me but I'm not sure how nailed he'll be (around Europa league time especially) since Hull have the likes of Rosenior and Brady who could temporarily play in his place. Chester is also up to 4.6 so it feels like a bit of a waste removing him without making any profit, despite him rising in price. I am really clueless though, atm. 😀

The reasoning behind not making the transfer is that you will be given ranking preference over those that have the same points but made more transfers...

In that regard, it makes sense not to use a transfer if you don't have to... since he will be at the top of the tree v all those on similar points..

Might be negligible in the long run, but you never know...

Prices are hardly moving, 2 FT's over an International break is always handy, Mata or Rooney *could* easily get some returns and if they do then they will have QPR at home the following week.

But no just because I don't have full confidence in one of the players I own I must sell them, is that right?

Thinking of dumping Begovic for either Forster or Krul. Not keen on Stoke's defence after their last two showings. I was expecting at least one clean sheet by now.

    Already have Coloccini.

So, the question is should I get Krul and double up on newcastle or get Forster?

If getting Forster, wait one more week or get him now? Anyone fancy soton to keep a cleanie against west ham at upton park?

my thinking too but they have good fixtures and I get 0.5

I am reluctant to bring in Forster because its an away game. I dont want to make a transfer if soton are going to concede, might as well keep bego and save the transfer then.

It was quite frustrating, but I watched the game and he played well...

On another day, that FK goes in, and Ade doesn't miss from 3 yards out... boom 10pts plus bonus...

I am always hopeful of players fulfilling the points potential that their stats suggest...

The problem lies in waiting too long for it, when there are other options fulfilling their potential right now...

This is where I sometimes fall down... I wait too long, or I don't wait long enough... 😡

I kept Coutinho for way too long last season, what a poor decision he was.

Eriksen is a much better finisher than Coutinho, but it has the beginnings of a similar situation. Playing well, good underlying stats, but other players on his team scoring better.

Granted, it's really been 1 week for Spurs, they were down to 10 men a majority of GW1.

coutinho's finishing is shocking at best. i had him last season as well, but just couldn't justify keeping him. excellent at getting himself space and getting into great positions, only to send it wide

If it pays off I'm shooting up the ranks, if not, I have a 4 pointer to cry over. In any case, I'm transferring him out straight after Hull, Villa's fixtures are awful after that. For Naismith probably.

Do you normally buy a player in with only one fixture in mind? Do you plan to sell him a week later when Villa's fixtures get really bad?

Last year I did that alot, hence my poor rank, somewhere around 200k or something, I'm trying not to do that as much, but with my 3rd striker slot being filled by 5.5's, I'd like to rotate players around there, so a few punts is expected. I looked around and only Weimann really spoke out to me for this gameweek, will transfer him out immediately after the Hull game, yes, for Naismith most likely.

Its a waste of a transfer mate. Better to get Naismith now and spare the waste. Every transfer is worth 4pts, whether its free or not.

If you're going to do punts at least make good ones.

If you haven't noticed, defenders are getting a lot of bps so far. You could get goalscoring defenders like caulker clyne kolarov and punt on them. Ramsey is a bp magnate so far.

Weimann will hardly ever get more than 1 goal and porbably won't get many bps, so you're punting for 6x2 =12. Whereas if you captain caulker 2+6+4+3x2 = 30 if he scores and gets a cs which is as likely as weimann scoring.
