With such a proliferation of midfield talent, a strong five across the middle will leave many Fantasy Managers with one striker benched for the majority of the season. It makes perfect sense to explore a budget option for this third striker then, but at the same time, this option needs to be one that can at least contribute points when called upon.

The Blackpool pairing of DJ Campbell and Luke Varney are that rare commodity – bargain basement strikers that appear to offer regular starts and the promise of Fantasy returns that more than justify the outlay. Currently priced at just 4.5 and 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League game, they offer the perfect solution for those Fantasy Managers looking to balance the books to help crowbar Cesc Fabregas back into their lineups.

Varney certainly has the statistical edge on his team mate. The former Charlton striker has returned 2 goals and 4 assists so far this term and his Opta stats appear to show greater potential in both areas. Despite those numbers, Campbell seems to offer the greater security when it comes to a starting role and pitch time. The diminutive striker has started every game since his arrival from Leicester and has completed the 90 minutes in each of them. Varney, in contrast, was on the bench against Blackburn and was subbed against both Newcastle, Chelsea and again this weekend at Birmingham.

You get the feeling that Ian Holloway is a massive fan of Campbell and has faith in him to produce. In my view, barring injury, Campbell will play regardless of form, while Varney has competition for his starting role from Marlon Harewood and Brett Ormerod. There’s no doubting that Campbell’s form is a concern, no goal in his last five starts, has kept him under the radar, but the striker is performing well enough and Holloway is keeping the faith. Only today, reports include quotes from the player himself bemoaning his lack of goals but promising an improvement…

“I feel there is a good run coming on and a few goals on the way, so I just have to keep getting in the right places and fingers crossed it will happen.”

Regardless of your weapon of choice, this is a good time to consider the Blackpool pair. The return of Fabregas as an option in midfield will have bloated the midfield budget and while cheap defensive options are always available, the shift to 3-5-2 as the preferred FPL formation, surely creates a need for a budget option up front. This is compounded by the fact that both Varney and Campbell actually offer potential as Fantasy starters over the mid-term.

Ian Holloway’s side have a very decent run of opponents to come (WBA EVE avl whm WOL bol ) all of which appear to offer the potential of attacking returns. If you can’t find a place for Charlie Adam in your lineup, then one of Campbell or Varney offer the opportunity to capture those returns.

They are also major differentials of course – neither top 2% ownership right now, with Campbell registering a paltry 0.3%. That appears to make them good options to help with the “route to recruit” for Cesc Fabregas, with the promise of some cheeky cheap returns to come over the next month.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I did this very thing earlier in the week, Varney (jumped on before the rise) and Fab in for Tevez (jumped off before the fall) and Albrighton. 3-5-2 and 4-5-1 are certainly the way to go right now.

Glad I'm not the only one. Varney is last in my sub list and will never see a match I shouldn't think.

bold move coming up, written in a wine induced slumer during the week, ive decided to stick with my premonition ladies,my mid is too nice -vdv,nasri,nani,adma,arteta. no fabs for me! (unless arteta is injured!)

    October 27 at 3:31 am

the darkening is upon us, let all who be unholy transfer in boselli, and be cast down with the mennonites, and turn their back on the saviour jescus fabrecus. The dark one will run rampant sowing seeds of destruction in the Fulham rearguard, obliterating clean sheets with his shitty residue, own goals aplenty, assists apaucity, barren point returns shall lay waste to dimanche happiness, a festering foreboding will descend upon the land as the fabrecus returns one point for a 32 minute cameo cut short by the scithing wrath of the darkening’s hammy. Woe will be all who gaze on the flint of the gunners, in anticipation of a conflagration, cathartic stagnation will be thy deathbed.

And Boselli, oh dark one, will fade into the shadows to a price of 4 million, and another season will be dashed upon the rocks of despair. And on the shoreline yonder a light will shine, one of teasing hope, but fading, as the nani hits a second, and a third…a new kingdom will be born, and the old feud will drag its protaganists to hell, from whence, never to return….

so eh, yeah lads, captain nani, fabs is gonna do fcuk all 🙂

I contemplated this very thing but in the end went for Franco di Santo. A near certain starts with a few assists and bonus in the last few weeks put his nose in front of the Blackpool pair for me. That and the fact that whoever played there won't get into the team this week with Carroll/Drog starting and a 5man midfield- 'wasting' one of Blackpool's more plum fixtures on paper.

That said, I expect Di Santo to only stay for the short term, with Touré to Bosingwa and Di Santo to Odemwingie on the horizon in 2 weeks. So he basically has the Lancashire derby to impress for me next week, good luck son!

He might well do mate, but might is the word. I'd be suprised if he was on for over 65mins, I just think play it safer. Why Nani not Nasri incidentally?

i have both, just captaining nani over him i think. BAE versus nani, no contest, and nasri might get nothing. even though ive had him for his purple patch, i still dont REALLy rate him , know what i mean?

You could park a jumbo jet and Fabregas will find away through. One flew over the cuckoo's nest. You know you need to keep taking the pills, remember what happened last time you stopped taking the pills!

Yea, I have Fabs Silva,VDV,Malouda and Nasri already.

However, I'm wondering if Bent is enough, I like his next 3 fixtures. He gets Tottenham, Chelsea, and some other team. Bent was wonderful (even after two missed penalties) at Tottenham last year, and he seems to always score goals vs big four clubs.

I can sell Bent, Balotelli and VDV to work Drogba into my lineup...Is that also worth it?

Yes you could, given Sunderland have 3 away in the next 4 and are poop travelers.

Luckily, of those three one is a derby so will be "fraught" and the other is against Spurs so he'll want to "do them".

He's a solid pick, but not a great one (or an awful one).

This transfer was what I spent my morning looking into, however I opted for Taylor-Fletcher instead...does everyone else know something I don't? How come he's not even mentioned in the post, with 2 goals, an assist, and 2BP's, as well as 4 consecutive 90min games?

    Oh dear...

Taylor-Fletcher is the Richard Garcia of 2010/11, he's not a footballer he is a janitor.

Somehow he gets the minutes but I'd have to gouge my eyes out if I saw him in my XV.

Haven't done a RMT in a while. Anyone up for it?

    Foster
    Mummy - Bosingwa - Enrique
    VDV - Nani - Fab (C) - Nasri - Adam
    Drogba - Berbatov

Bench: Hahn - Carrol - Shawcross - Jara

Stick with Nasri or bring in Arteta in his place?

With WHM and NEW to come, surely stick with Nasri. If you want to get Arteta in then maybe VDV away at ManU and Bolton in the next 2 despite him playing well... though I think your midfield is strong enough as it is.

I'd also probably play Carroll this week ahead of VDV
