The international break beckons, the Fantasy Premier League wildcards will be fluttering and after today’s games, there’s little doubt where you can find the first profit-making bandwagon.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s two goals against Villa at the Lane today won the game and will surely fetch him his second maximum FPL Bonus Point haul of the season. The Dutchman has arrived in the Premier League, hit the ground running and has established himself as not only a creative force but also a direct and devastating threat on the oppositions goal.

So the Van der Vaart “transfer in” is a no brainer. Well not quite. Gareth Bale appears to have hogged the limelight around here in the last 24 hours and he suddenly becomes a consideration again when it comes to coveting his influential team-mate.

Can any Fantasy lineup afford to have two Tottenham players, let alone two of their midfield? Those Fantasy Managers who have resisted the charms of Bale or even shipped out the Welshman over the frustration of his ever-changing role, can turn to Van der Vaart without hesitation. Bale owners however have a conundrum to consider.

During a kind run of fixtures having two Spurs players would be palatable but Redknapp’s side face three away games in the next four, one of which is at Old Trafford. Their home fixture meanwhile has them facing Everton – a side who have conceded just two goals in four away games and who sealed the season-starting win today at Birmingham. That won’t be easy.

Between these four fixtures, Spurs will face a Champions League tie at Inter for undoubtedly their biggest European tie so far. The fixture falls after Gameweek 8’s trip to Fulham and before the home game with Everton. Even if we felt that Van der Vaart was a rotation risk (it doesn’t look that way), he is suspended for the San Siro visit after his red against FC Twente in midweek. That will surely mean that the Dutchman is protected from being rested for both the Fulham and Everton games. The same perhaps can’t be said for Bale, who could either be rested at Fulham, or find himself at left-back once again away from home.

Is this enough to seal the fate for the 50% Bale and see thousands make the switch to jump aboard the Van dar Vaart bandwagon? Bale’s 1 point return today and his failure to notch a goal or an assist in his last five league starts, isn’t a statistic that helps his cause.

This is the knee jerk – so in-depth thinking isn’t allowed. For now there’s no doubt that Van der Vaart has become a hugely influential figure for Redknapp’s side, who having started four out of four league games since his arrival, looks to have his role well and truly cemented. Right now that role appears to allow him license to support a lone striker and provide a constant menace to opponents.

Van der Vaart will surely play the next two matches at Fulham and against Everton. Based on showings so far, he will take free-kicks, he will notch around 10 efforts on goal, he will earn Bonus Points if Spurs can win those matches. With an international break now beckoning, he will surely rise in price at least twice between now and Gameweek 8. It’s hard to deny the Dutchman’s draw.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Morning Evs, How you doing? Is it still raining in Wales?

Have fun with the WC. I layed mine before the start of last gameweek and so far it's having the desired effect.

However if Drogba goes mental today, and Torres does bugger all then I will be buggered.

I reckon it's worth it, although not many will rise by 0.2 and they may be ones you want to keep.

Don't sell players that have risen in price since you've bought them that you think you might want to keep in your final team. Otherwise you will lose value on them. Have fun.

If Pavlachenko could finish then he would have had two assists Si he's not doing nothing.

Sorry to hear about the weather mate. I guess the Ryder Cup won't be finished until Wednesday at this rate!

Unlucky with the injuries. It's a pain in the ass when you have to firefight to replace the crocks in your squad rather than look at ways to improve it. Play your (wild)cards right and you can push your way back up there, though.

Do you have a good feeling about Torres today? He has to come good now, surely??

This makes Berbatov very appealing. However, one of the two guys ahead of me in my mini league has him. Depending where I am at the end of today (only 10 points behind leader) is whether I get him or not.

No one in my league has Tevez, which makes him a tasty differential until Balotelli comes back from injury.

However getting Tevez in is more expensive and means I have to ship out Gerrard, whereas Berbs means I can take Bale out instead.

Don't worry about the top scoring team this week, he's only got one player left to play today.

And although he is in the top thousand, he did captain VdV. Also I am not convinced that doubling up on ManU, Everton and Stoke defences, as well as having a front line of Odenwingie, Jerome and Ormerod is the way to go.

      Interesting aproach though.

It does look like Van der Vaart has stolen Bale's thunder right about now.

My concern for VdV will be what happens when Defoe returns?

However, I really need to get either Tevez or Berbatov as my 2nd striker to pair up with Drogba, so getting rid of Bale will have to wait.

The other thing is that, if you've been watching the Spurs games Bale has still been supplying good ball and, but for some wasteful finishing, he could have had a load of assists in those games.

Football is like any other sport in that players go on hot and cold streaks where the luck either all goes for them or suddenly, for no reason it all goes against them. Bale could quite easily start getting assists and BP's again in a few weeks time.

Its a hard one but I think most people will cash in on Bale's value before it starts dropping.

Agreed Evs. Even more so with Harry's post match comments about having more balance with just the one striker. Bale at LM and 1 striker means he will cut inside more and support.
With the 2 strikers in the first half yesterday, he was stationed wide left for the majority of time, and supplying crosses rather than passes/shots.

He's not going to score lots of goals in any season, but with 1 up top, he's much more of a fantasy threat. Nomar's comment about Defoe is exactly my concern too. Defoe is not a 1 striker player and if Harry insists on finding a place for him it will be VDV/Bale (and potentially Spurs) that will suffer as a result.

Good point, Harry pretty much admitted yesterday that one up top is the way he will go now, Bale and Lennon will come into the points a lot more now as they will need to support the striker aswell.

VDV did well yesterday and at that price he really is the poor man's Fabregas hey Anorak?

                Peace, joke.

😆 but VDV doesn't have wooden hammys, Chill.

Seriously though, I was thinking about this a bit, How Spurs/Arsenal have been building their teams.
                  So,

                  Moody Russian Striker? Check (Arsh/Pav)
English right winger with questionable delivery? Check (Walcott/Lennon)
                  Welsh wunderkind? Check (Ramsey/Bale)
                  Aging French CB? Check (Squillaci/Gallas)
                  Young Brazilian DM (Denilson/Sandro)
                  African francophone fullback? Check (Eboue/BAE)
                  Eastern European playmaker? Check (Rosicky/Modric)
                  and now
Western European golden boy? Check (Fab/VDV)

If you also add the injuries galore this season, we're not so different.

True although its a bit like Waitrose and Lidls if you catch my drift.

In all seriousness though the Spurs squad is looking pretty good at the moment.

You're right. Much like Waitrose, prices are inflated at the Emirates, and the experience at both leaves you short of money and atmosphere. 😉

You've got to ask yourself though, is VDV worth the 1m more (if you can sell Bale for 6.8ish) for his goals, set-piece hogging and likely more BPs? He certainly is if you ask me. The question is do you go Bale + VDV, or just VDV... not do you go Bale or VDV. That jamiesp guy was on all week shouting down VDV fans, I imagine he was quiet yesterday. Or backtracking.

LM Jim. I was at the game - he was plenty involved.
Like Chill says earlier, Pav could ahve converted a couple of chances, and as the game went on, it was Bale and VDV swapping passes in most of the build up.

Aside from a silly booking for kicking the ball away, he had the Villa defence on toast for most of the game.

I'm going to do the WC thing, in 2 minds when to do it as there could be international injuries but on the other hand if the prices go up I'm screwed!!

Please take the time to rate this, I would really appresiate it

    Carson / Robinson

    Shawcross / Ridgewell / Figueroa / Coleman / Elmohamady

    Arteta / Fabregas / Nani / Etherington / Adam

    Berbatov / Rodallega / Drogba

I'm also considering Elmander in place of Rodallega? £1.6m in the bank

Malouda? Tevez? VDV? I'd say you need at least 2 of those 3.

I would have Odenwingie in place of Roda
Alcaraz over Figs all day long.
      Prob Albrighton over Adam?

      Hell, I dunno, just ideas.

That one wasn't directed about you mate.

It's just like urgh, of coure Tevez is gonna be a popular option. He's scoring goals and has tasty fixtures.

Fair enough mate, Rodallega will probably do alright in Wigan's decent spell I just can't see him delivering the same kind of value as Odem. I don't have the lad myself but if I was wildcarding he'd be in.

I do think you should try and find a way to get Malouda in though! I feel he'll be essential all season.

                Didn't think it was!

You make a good point, Malouda will come at the cost of Fabregas, take a look at the second option above and see what you think.

Also, for a cheap defence with good potential I think my choices look great, your thoughts?

Yer it's the old balanced team vs. expensive players dilemma. It's a call - I think Fabregas is a must have when he's fit but both midfield options look good to me.

I'm all about cheap defence. You only have to look at my team to see that. I like your choiced but as I mentioned I think Alacaraz is a better option that Figs. I was looking at the OPTA stats and thought he looked a better call. Other defender you could look at are Konchesky or Jara. Both good options.

As soon as Agbonlahor is fit not sure Albrighton will have a start as Young will move back into midfield......maybe

You know with a wildcard you can keep making free transfers right up until the deadline in 2 weeks time? International injuries won't matter, you'd just transfer those players out before the deadline. If you want to play your wildcard, you need to do it right now to make the most of price rises.

Is it worth wildcarding this week and chasing some bandwagons for cash? Team at the mo (already done bale -> vdv)

      Foster (Hahn)
Alex - Coleman - Mummy (Gohouri Foley)
Nani - Gerrard - Malouda - VDV (Albrighton)
      Drogba - Berbatov - Carroll

Could end up with pretty good team of above plus these changes, but maybe a waste right now?

      Berbs -> Tevez
      Gerrard -> Fabregas

Berbs -> Tevez: mostly just due to annoyance with United and the perpetual uncertainty that a player will start, despite ongoing form. Prob a bit rash though you're right.

I'm not sure that I'll be getting Fabs back.

I think I'll probably be shaping up over the next few weeks with a Drogs/Odem/Berba or Tevez trio up front, have 4/5 good solid MF'ers (Etherington, Nani, Malouda, VdV and 1 other) plus some Man City, Chelsea, Liv coverage in def.

I may swap Fabs for Malouda but having both takes up too much money in my team. Plus most weeks I think most people would captain Drogba rather than Fabs which means you don't get double points off the Fabster.

Me too Teddy. If N'Zog gets an assist when Berra clearly hits it against Rodallega for the goal, then there was certainly as much intent in Davies' through ball for Dempsey.

          C'est la jeu I suppose.

I agree, Anorak. And FAQ says: "If during this pass, an opposing player significantly alters the speed or direction of the ball, then no assist is given except if this intervention directly results in an own goal."

Is there any way to contact (e-mail) FPL and ask?

              huh?

The deflection did significantly alter the speed and direction of the ball. I have Davies and don't think that it should be an assist.

Really? I wasn't even sure if there was a deflection. I thought it possible that the last touch (after contact from the defender) was Davies's. It was certainly very close.

I'm pretty certain from watching it, that the ball has a lot of top spin on it when it goes through to Dempsey... hinting that the ball came over the defender last..

If the defender had kicked it into Davies then it would most likely have back spin on it.

Bale gets another lifeline for me. Harry seems to have found a way to play him in midfield and accomodate VDV. Those who watched the game said Bale was dangerous and could well have had a couple of assists.

My patience ran out with Chamakh after last week, he wasn't delivering and Tevez seemed the obvious replacement based on form and fixes.

If Pavyluchenko wasn't such a mong, then Bale could have had a couple of assists, and then inevitably a couple of BPs.

'Harry seems to have found a way to play him in midfield and accomodate VDV'

You sound as if you're praising Harry! It was blatantly obvious that they should play 4-4-1-1, with one of Modric or VDV in behind a lone forward... It only because he's so intent on playing with two forwards, that why he's struggled to fit VDV, Modric, Lennon and Bale into the same midfield.

I bought Charlie in this week so I am buzzing over his 3 point bonus and score.

                  Nice ranking mate!
Fair play on the VDV front, from what I've heard he is a poacher at the min, roaming behind striker, very tempted...looking at one of VDV/Zog/Arteta to go with Fabs...

WTF happened to that stupid c**t Evra yesterday? He plays every game for United, doesn't he?And the only game he had to miss out on was when United kept one of their rare CSs these days.AARGGHHH!!!Would have scored 6 pts. had he played, but he'll now be replaced by Foley who got just 1 pt.-that's a massive 5 pts. lost.GRRRRRRR!!!!!I'm on a sorry total of 9 pts. with Drogs(C),Mal,Carlitos and Carroll still to play.Don't think I'll be making the first round of the FFS Cup,and for no fault of mine.

Ferguson swapped in O'Shea due to the threat of Elmohamady in the air from the left. He's acknowledged it in his post-match comments. We mentioned this problem for Ferguson in the ScoutCast but didn't go so far as think that Evra would be dropped to the bench.

Good call Mark, little proud of that specific identification in the podcast?! Have to say I havent joined yet and am always a little doubtful about how useful all those stats are...but there is a use!

this is pathetic to be honest.

Evra has apparently also had his worse form for many seasons, according to a united fan i know. another player who have been turd since the world cup...

Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed Leicester City's new manager and unveiled a news conference on Sunday.

          What's Andy's take on this?

just fired off an e mail to fantasy towers regarding davies assist ,maybe if enough davies owners do the same maybe we will get a positive response ,i feel we have a case as in the fact without his contribution of the forward pass ,dempsey would not have scored ,come on men object bitterly, fingers crossed.

It took a massive deflection off a west ham defender. The pass was not intended for Dempsey. I'm glad it went through to Dempsey though because i have him! 🙂
