Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 15 – Monday

Robin van Persie scores twice as United see off Southampton to move into third. Wayne Rooney and Dusan Tadic bag an assist apiece, whilst Graziano Pelle’s first goal since Gameweek 8 isn’t enough to prevent the Saints slipping to another defeat.

Van Persie at the double

At a time when Sergio Aguero owners are looking for a likely exit route, the United frontman stepped up with a deadly brace to fire his side into third spot last night. There’s no doubt that Van Persie has toiled under Louis van Gaal so far but his recent form suggests he may have turned the corner – that’s three goals, an assist and four bonus points in his last trio of appearances now, and at 12.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he is certainly affordable for those holding Aguero. Upcoming opponents Liverpool, Villa and Newcastle have all tightened up in recent outings, though, and with far cheaper options offering better form, the 2%-owned Dutchman may remain a differential for now.

Rooney Ticks Over

The England international arrived at St Mary’s in decent form, having scored in each of his last two league outings. Handed a role alongside Van Persie as Van Gaal turned to a 3-4-1-2 formation, Rooney’s dead-ball duties came to fruition after he provided the assist for the Dutchman’s second. Whilst his minutes have been diminished by suspension and injury this term, Rooney has been relatively consistent for the Red Devils – he’s now scored or assisted in six of his last eight in the league. With Radamel Falcao remaining on the bench for the 90 minutes, Rooney’s more advanced berth may well turn a few more heads, with a 10.4 price tag far easier on the budget than Van Persie’s.

Pelle Ends Goal Drought

The Italian was back amongst the goals at St Mary’s after firing his first strike in seven Gameweeks. Pelle has dropped from 8.5 to 8.1 in recent weeks as his woeful form persuaded plenty to look elsewhere but last night’s strike served a reminder of his abilities and took the Saints summer signing up to second spot amongst forwards in the FPL game. An assist from Dusan Tadic – his first points since Gameweek 8 – suggests Ronald Koeman’s main men still have the potential to deliver ahead of a run which pits them against a trio of opponents (bur, EVE, cpl) that have been far from convincing at the back.

Saints Stutter Again

It’s four matches without a clean sheet now for Ronald Koeman’s side as the stern fixtures prove a test too far. Having conceded just five times in the first 11 Gameweeks, Southampton have since shipped seven goals in the subsequent four, and with Toby Alderweireld joining the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork in the injury room, their toils look set to continue. Koeman’s defence face Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United in the next six and may be best avoided until the schedule smiles kindly again in Gameweek 22.

    Guzan
    Ivan, Baines, Clyne (Bartley, Yun)
Boyd, Sanchez, Downing, Siggy, Hazard (C)
    Costa, Sakho (Austin)

£7.1 in the bank. Thinking I may get rid of Austin for a -4.

Dzeko if he looks decent against Roma, hopefully he doesn't play a full 90 though.

    ::::: Dead Team Challenge - GW15 Leaderboard Updated :::::

Ladies and Gentlemen, we finally have a new leader... give it up for Woeisme... his superior consistency has seen him jump into the lead this week on 831pts, which gives him an overall rank of 19k, helped by his mightily impressive 58pts this week...

To be 19k after 15 gameweeks of having a completely inactive team is absolutely remarkable I think... fair play mate...

Our perennial contender The Casual sits close behind in second on 823pts, with Mull stumbling back to third after his breakout performance last week, sitting on 810pts...

Congratulations to Jagshmash and Manchest-Hair United, who blew the competition out of the water this week, each with an impressive 60pts and a GW rank of around 15k... well done lads

Please click on this link for the latest GW15 leaderboard:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1raAyvT8NYalwe4_-1EqJZBOOcbwjmixKpFu18ySKGVQ/edit#gid=296085668

You can also click on the 'teams' tab and scroll through to check your team individually... the teams are listed alphabetically so that should make it easier to navigate...

And finally, a huge thank you to Billy for his continued work behind the scenes, without his ongoing tech support I doubt I'd be able to do any of this in a timely manner, if at all...

    Thanks...

I have noticed a few people mentioning rotating Austin with another attacker. A risky tactic, although QPR's away form is dire to say the least he has scored away at two of the meanest defences this season Southampton and Chelsea so is potentially fixture proof.

He's unlikely to score away to Arsenal, although stranger things have happened, but could certainly get himself a goal in their next away game at Burnley.

I've had a few requests from people so I'm happy to run another comp in line with the current one...

Is this something that you guys would be interested in?

Also, I would ask that you pay a quick visit to this link and sample the form that Billy has taken the time to create for me...

GW6 is the best time to use your WC, imho. I'll be using mine and getting 11 starters from the Tuesday games

Luckily no Russian games, so team news will be out.

However, the Big 2 of Ronaldo and Messi are always likely to start, even if their team is already through. Isco might be worth a shout

    Guzan
    Baines Zabaleta Azpilicueta
    Sanchez Hazard(C) Sigurdsson Downing Boyd
    Costa Dzeko

    Gilks - Duff Austin Saylor

    No hits taken, FTs being:
    Aguero & Chambers --> Dzeko & Zaba

Sorry didn't notice your reply earlier!

I guess if he started and got subbed off around 60min that would be a positive sign for the weekend. If he was playing alright of course.

Aguero dropping again tonight is annoying though since it affects my selling price...

Similar questions have probably been asked umpteen times in recent days but what duo do people think is better choice: Dzeko & Silva or Sakho & Yaya?

Sakho now a possible rotation risk with Carroll back and Valencia fit has me thinking the former.

Last season Yaya played 1879 minutes with Silva and 949 minutes without him. I'm including partial games here, where one was subbed off earlier than the other (usually Silva going off).

    Yaya goals per 90 WITH = 0.53
    Yaya goals per 90 WITHOUT = 0.83

So Yaya still scores with Silva on the pitch, but at a nearly half the rate. Of course, it's a pretty small sample size so feel free to write it off as an anomaly. But there's an obvious narrative - when Silva goes off, Yaya pushes up.

With Silva and Jovetic back i don't think he will play as far forward as people hope. Factor in his four yellows and it could be a false dawn. Its the jammy pens that worry me.

Possibly. I couldn't be bothered to trawl the data for Kun too 🙂 Be my guest though ...

And yeah, all is pretty well, though as I say, super-hectic. Fortunately, it gives me a lot less time to over-think FPL, hence my half-decent rank.

I love David very much. My favoured solution to both the injury crisis and the upcoming Christmas rotate-a-thon is swapping Aguero & Boyd for Striker & City Mid. I can do that with Dzeko & Silva or Sakho & Yaya, hence going fishing for anti-Yaya evidence 🙂

This is excellent, thanks. I was just about to write something similar, albeit without the research into last season. Yaya's goal scoring run has certainly coincided with Silva's absence this season.

I've been waiting for a hot topic on Yaya because lots of people are asking the same questions about 4YCs, ACON, etc

Here's my bullet point list on Yaya for what its worth:

          Good
          - He’s coming into form with 3 goals in 4 games and picking up 8 BPS in that time. BUT looking at his stats, there’s not a clear improvement in his goal threat recently (e.g. compare GWs 1-3 with 12-15 in the members area). [BUT Yaya defies stats, remember last season!]
          - He’s on penalties now.
          - Man City have excellent fixtures.
          - Man City’s fixtures rotate home/away with Chelsea until the end of January, which works well from a captaincy viewpoint. BUT is Yaya really a captaincy option?
          - With no Aguero he’s the main man in the City team so more likely to get Bonus points. BUT how will City perform without Aguero, they’ve looked like a one man team most of this season.
          Bad
          - Silva’s coming back. See above! In the first nine GWs this season (when Silva was playing) Yaya had one goal and no assists.
          - He's on 4YCs. So could be suspended BUT he only got booked 4 times last year (6, 8 and 3 in the previous seasons). He got 3 bookings at the start of the year when he was playing badly, now he’s doing better his disciplinary record has improved.
          - ACON. BUT his first match is on the 20th Jan. GW21 is on the 10th Jan, GW22 is on the 18th Jan and GW23 is on the 31st. Those of us who like to leave our wildcard late in January would only be affected in GW22. This could be dealt with by a free transfer. Only a big issue if you’ve got several other African players – even then the wildcard is your friend.

I'll probably have to re-cloak soon enough 🙂

But the more I think about this, the more it seems like a bit of a red herring. For a start, Silva will continue to be subbed off early, leaving Yaya to push on and score. Happened several times last season and there's no reason to think it won't keep happening.

Do try to pop in regularly if you possibly can (without jeopardising your career of course), you're one of the good ones 🙂

I hope it is a spurious stat as I've already made my moves in a bid to stay true to one of my pre-season promises which was not to be afraid of hits and to make more early transfers in order to sustain/boost team value.

I'll gloss over the fact that in doing so I completely ignored my other pre-season promise which was to go form over fixtures where strikers are concerned - Dzeko fluttered his dark blue ticker at me and I couldn't resist. Aguero & Fabregas -> Dzeko & Yaya done.

Chambers -> Azpi/Zabaleta/A N Other for a hit is my last move of the week but price changes aren't forcing my hand yet.

I've suddenly realised that Oscar looks like a prime candidate for a rest this weekend. He started all the recent games (4 in 14 days) and wasn't mentioned as one of the ones who will be rested in the CL. My bench can't cope with that.

I might possibly do Oscar > Yaya for a hit.

Nice going! Be careful - if you're too successful they'll start to question your work/fpl balance. It might be judicial to throw in a dodgy transfer every now and again to reassure them you barely have time to look at your team 😉

The irony being that I definitely perform worse the more time I spend over-thinking it. A couple of seasons ago I gave up with a few weeks to go and my dead team reached a season-high rank by the end 😆

                      That's just exceptionally peculiar!

I did a mildly depressing exercise about half way through last season to see how many points my GW1 team would have amassed had I left it completely untouched up to that point. The points I'd gained over and above that I considered as being attributable to my managerial prowess. I don't recall the figure but it was less than I expected/hoped! Even so, at least it was a positive number!

No reason to think that the consensus is right but I'd say the majority view is Yaya. Silva is coming off the back of an injury and in any case didn't do an awful lot this season.

          Welcome back Ros mate.

Silva points without Aguero would be interesting too, any chance?

I did see somewhere that dzeko got 10 goals in 14 games without Aguero so if silva output increases similarly that would be great.

I've just done some analysis myself of their record when Aguero didn't play (but including his combined 40 minutes from 2 sub on appearances in GW 1 and 2 this season). Sorry for the formatting, but it was done in Excel.

For ease of understanding, Toure comes out on top, but it's pretty close: 8-3 goals, 1-4 assists, and 3-3 in yellow cards.

If it helps, Silva is better pre-Christmas!

Right, I've had a bit of a mull, bit of a think, and I think I've solved my Aguero quandary.

Aguero, Eriksen and Chambers to Bony, Yaya and Cresswell.

Will mean double Swansea (with Siggy) and not really a fan of losing Eriksen, but from what I can see this is the best way of limiting the damage of last week. What do you think?

What does last week have to do with it? Water under the bridge.

Eriksen face 2 of the 3 worse defences in the next 3 weeks. Could bite you in the As*

Ah no, not in terms of damage to my rank, I actually did alright. I meant in terms of the injury/suspension damage (Have fabs, aguero, austin and chambers). Feels uncomfortable getting rid of eriksen, but I'd rather get rid of him than Siggy I think.

Worth doing Aguero + Siggy -> Yaya + Dzeko for a -4 and still have 1.2m itb?
    Then my team would be:

    Guzan (Given)
    Baines - Hutton - Yun - Wisdom - Duff

    Costa - Dzeko - Austin?

    or

Oscar -> Yaya and either of Agbonlahor/Berainhio to Dzeko for a -4.

    Just examined the stats tables...

Since the start of the season, costa vs rvp keys stats resolves 9v1. In the last 4 games this becomes 50:50. Costa is still getting loads of chances he just isnt converting them (9%), whilst rvps stats are nowhere near as good, he has been very clinical of late.

Throw in the cash difference and leaning toward costa now
