Andy Carroll is expected to miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Alexis Sanchez is uncertain to feature for Arsenal’s showdown with Middlesbrough. Robin van Persie is a doubt for United, Jon Walters could return for Stoke, whilst Mile Jedinak is likely to miss out again for Palace.

Arsene Wenger has admitted Alexis Sanchez remains a doubt for Sunday’s clash with Middlesbrough due to the knee injury sustained against Leicester on Tuesday. The Gunners boss had some positive news, though, revealing Aaron Ramsey will only miss the next two weeks with a hamstring problem, whilst Jack Wilshere is back in normal training.

Yaya Sanogo remains a doubt for Palace’s clash with Liverpool due to a hamstring problem, whilst James McArthur is struggling to overcome a thigh injury. The Eagles have new left-back Pape Souare available for selection, after the Senegal international finally received a work permit. Skipper Mile Jedinak is likely to miss out again with a knee problem.

Matthew Upson has returned to training for Leicester after recovering from the knock picked up against Arsenal on Tuesday. Robert Huth is cup-tied for the Foxes, whilst Chris Wood misses up despite stepping up his recovery from a minor ankle injury.

Robin van Persie is a doubt for United’s clash with Preston on Monday, whilst Daley Blind and Phil Jones remain uncertain to feature after both were forced off against Burnley in midweek. Speaking to MUTV, Louis van Gaal conceded:

“I don’t know. We have to wait and see. I don’t think it’s a heavy injury for Jones. With Blind, I say what the doctor has said – we’ll wait and see. I think he shall play on Monday – that’s my expectation, but you never know.”

Reports in the Newcastle press suggest the Cheick Tiote could be ruled out for up to ten weeks with the knee injury sustained whilst playing for Senegal in the African Cup of Nations.

Mark Hughes rolled out an injury update ahead of Stoke’s clash with Blackburn, with the Potters boss optimistic on Jon Walters’ chances of recovering from a knee problem:

“Jon Walters is the only one who realistically looks like he could be okay. We left him out on Wednesday with the sole purpose of hopefully having him available on Saturday. He has a little problem which we have got to manage correctly, and that is what we have been doing with him. He hasn’t trained this week, but we will see how he is today. Erik Pieters has trained this week, but again he has been out for a month so we have to decide what we feel is best for him as we don’t want to compromise him. The likes of Ryan [Shawcross], Marc [Wilson] and Stephen Ireland could all return for Aston Villa next weekend.”

Jack Rodwell is available for Sunderland’s trip to Bradford, though Anthony Reveillere is a major doubt due to a hamstring problem. Fellow defender Billy Jones has recovered from a similar complaint, whilst Emmanuele Giaccherini misses out due to illness. Lee Cattermole and Will Buckley are still sidelined due to knee injuries.

Baggies new boy Callum McManaman is a doubt for the cup clash against West Ham. Skipper Darren Fletcher is cup-tied, whilst Victor Anichebe continues to struggle with a groin problem.

Big Sam’s side look likely to be without Andy Carroll for the remainder of the season – the forward is set to undergo surgery on knee ligament damage on Tuesday, West Ham have confirmed. The Hammers have successfully appealed Adrian’s midweek dismissal against Southampton and the stopper is available for selection with immediate effect, whilst Allardyce also welcomes back Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan, after both missed out against the Saints in midweek.

The FA Cup semi finals will clash with GW 33 and cause blanks (followed by DGWs).
These are the GW 33 fixtures (the teams in caps are still in the FA Cup):

    ARSENAL v SUNDERLAND
    chelsea v MAN UTD
    hull v LIVERPOOL
    PALACE v WBA
    LEICESTER v swansea
    VILLA v qpr
    everton v burnley
    man city v west ham
    newcastle v spurs
    stoke v southampton

I'm assuming the the blanks from GW 33 will be rescheduled to GW 34, so if you still have a WC you should plan to use it in GW 34. Just make sure you'll be able to play a full team in GW 33.

    Remember:
Tottenham & QPR have a blank in GW 27 and a DGW in GW 28
Chelsea & Leicester have a blank in GW 27 and a DGW in GW ?? (probably GW 31)

Good reason to go Spurs-heavy in GW28 then.

Triple up on Spurs after the blank, avoid transferring in Man Utd & Arsenal players.
Stoke, Saints & Man City players won't have any blanks or DGWs this season.

Still some way to go though. With 7/8 fixtures, should be easy enough to field 11 in GW23. Agree on Spurs because they've good fixtures. Don't think now is the time to avoid Arsenal.

Be careful, most people will have 3 Chelsea players for their blank in GW 31, then they'll be scrambling to field a full team in GW 33, plan ahead.

There's a decent chance that Chelsea will have a DGW in GW 31 and a blank in GW 33.

Could cause havoc if this is a draw. Could be a replay on a league weeknight due to liverpools Europa commitments. Southampton blank potentially..

They'll play the replay on the Quarter Final weekend I expect, then the winner will play their Quarter Final midweek after that. Either that or their GW28 matches will be postponed.

I started the season with Trevor Howard in goal, and was frustrated by Everton's leakiness. When he got injured, I was glad to have an excuse to replace him, and brought in Miranda Hart. That ended up just as bad, so in the January wildcard I reshuffled my goalies and instead tried Norman Wisdom in defence, only for him to be dropped from the 1st X1.

    2FT: Wisdom -> Les Dawson?

Also, who is the best replacement for Wisdom? I'm thinking of Zouma as a long-term replacement but not before the blank.

Thought I'd compare AVB and Sherwood's respective records in the league last season. It gives some statistical credence to back up what many are saying - Sherwood's arrival at Villa is likely to be good news for their failing attack, and given that they need wins to stay up, it's an understandable appointment.

The common assertion that his arrival may also have a negative impact on their defence is harder to judge though - These numbers suggest that Spurs were slightly tighter at the back under AVB, but the difference was very small.

    Overall:
    AVB - 16 games, 8 wins, 3 draws, 5 defeats. 1.69 'Points' per game.
    Sherwood - 22 games, 13 wins, 3 draws, 6 defeats. 1.91 'Points' per game.

    Attack:
AVB - 0.94 'Goals' per game, 8.13 'Shots In The Box' per game, 1.75 'Big Chances' per game.
Sherwood - 1.82 'Goals' per game, 7.68 'Shots In The Box' per game, 2.64 'Big Chances' per game.

    Defence:
AVB - 1.31 'Goals Conceded' per game, 6.5 'Shots In The Box Conceded' per game, 1.56 'Big Chances Conceded' per game, 0.44 'Clean Sheets' per game.
Sherwood - 1.36 'Goals Conceded' per game, 7.00 'Shots In The Box Conceded' per game, 1.59 'Big Chances Conceded' per game, 0.32 'Clean Sheets' per game.

Reliant on backs to the wall defending, sure, I take your point.

Check Goals Conceded, Clean Sheets, Big Chances Conceded, Attempts in Box Conceded, Attempts from Set Plays Conceded, and Saves (i.e. Shots on Target Conceded) though, then look at the alternatives in the same price range...

I'm not expecting fireworks, the fixtures aren't all perfect and they'll let in a couple on occasion, but avl/STO/QPR/LEI in the space of five gameweeks is good enough for me.
