Arsenal have this afternoon confirmed they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen for the transfer of Per Mertesacker. The deal is rumoured to be in the region of 9 million Euros and is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

The recent 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford was likely the straw that broke the camel’s back and Arsene Wenger has moved to address the abject defensive display from the likes of Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny by bringing the 6 foot 6, 26 year old Werder Bremen captain to the Emirates…

The Statistics

Mertesacker started off his career at local club Hannover, making 74 appearances across three seasons with 7 goals also coming his way. A standout performance at the 2006 World Cup persuaded Werder Bremen to hand over 5 million Euros for his future endeavours.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength as one of the most experienced, yet still reasonably young, members of the national team with over 70 caps to his name thus far.

Five years at Bremen has seen Mertesacker rack up a further 142 appearances and another 12 goals as his height advantage got him on the end of a number of Marko Marin set-pieces.

The Prospects

Following the shell-shock of last weekend Wenger will be looking to shore up the Arsenal back-line, and pronto. Laurent Koscielny was signed for £10m just last summer but will be expected to fall down the pecking order as the German brings some experience and solidarity to the Gunners. For more info check out the twitter timeline of real-life scout Tor-Kristan Karlsen.

With an expected price of around 6.0 to come in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) he’ll be a risky bandwagon for the early wildcarders but if he can get beyond the springy Thomas Vermaelen and get his lofty bean on the end of some corners and free-kicks, he might just be worth his Fantasy crust.

Martin Keown just stated on BBC that Ross Barkley is going to be one of the best players to ever play in this country.

I've not seen much of the kid... is he really that good?

Seems a bit excessive, but certainly a talent from the little I have seen of him. If Arteta goes to Arsenal, does that make him nailed on?

Keown seems to think he is nailed on even if Arteta stays.

        Could be a good pick

Definitely. He seems an obvious alternative to Moses for Wildcarders such as myself.

Eh???? Inverness is a lovely place, a hell of a lot nicer than anything in Yorkshire. Granted, they've been punching above their weight for a while in the SPL and looks like their lack of funds are catching up with them.

I do worry for Arsenal now. With no Arteta, is Benayoun enough creativity for them? And what happened to Wenger's supposed 'French conquest' today? Martin, M'Villa, Gourcuff????

Up until today there was always some belief they would seal Martin, MVila, Hazard or someone of similar quality but all stories today have been about players like Benayoun and Arteta.

That's not good enough, is it?

    What is wrong with Wenger?

Probably needed to offer around 15million to get his man, perhaps a little more than he wanted to, but you have to pay a bit over the odds to get your man sometimes. Even more so when you've left it to deadline day, I don't know what else he expects. If he stayed fit Arteta would have been a top signing for them. But his stubborness has once again cost them from a top signing. Benayoun is not the answer.

It's going to be a long season for the Gooners.

andre santos is a good player good going forward should be first choice over gibbs

per mertesacker will get found out he had a shocking last season and is exceptionally slow

park will be good backup for RVP clever player but reason for cheap price is he needs to do 2 years national duty before he is 30 and he is now 26

benayoun will be decent if fit but reminds me of joe cole of last season

alll in all not enough for arsenal and will struggle to get top 4 with those signings
