Rooney Out of Ajax Game

Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of Manchester United’s Europa League game with Ajax tomorrow evening. Sir Alex Ferguson’s afternoon press conference revealed the striker has been struggling with a throat infection for a week and, with a 2-0 first leg advantage, will not be risked against the Dutch side.

Rumours were rife this morning of a possible absence- reports had indicated Rooney had missed training and have subsequently proven to be correct. United have since published details on their official site, with Ferguson going on to say:

Rooney’s out for tomorrow. He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday and he’s been in bed for a lot of the weekend. He came in this morning for the first time. We’re trying hard to get him ready for Sunday [at Norwich].

With Dimitar Berbatov back in contention after recovering from a knock, the blow is slightly lessened for United but the news is a significant worry for Fantasy managers. Over 46,000 have transferred Rooney in this week prior to the champions’ trip to Norwich- only Demba Ba has been more popular.

Back-to-back braces against Chelsea and Liverpool have seen Rooney’s stock soar, with his price rising 0.2 over the last couple of gameweeks. With United’s schedule looking particularly enticing from gameweek 28 onwards, many have overlooked the likes of Sergio Aguero, despite home fixtures with Blackburn and Bolton up next for City.

While Ferguson hasn’t ruled him out for the visit to Carrow Road, Rooney’s owners will be anxiously awaiting the United manager’s regular Friday morning update, where more light will hopefully be shed on his chances of recovery. Any absence could mean a simple short-term switch to Aguero and, with Ba also afforded two home games – against Wolves and Sunderland- the alternatives are clearly enticing.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

In light of the team sheet , I gotta say I have early doubts on both Richards and Aguero starting against Blackburn irrespective of their performance today. The armband is almost definitely going to Ba, but I had hate to see if both Aguero and Richards had just cameos against Blackburns. Thoughts?

It will be interesting to see who gets subbed off and at what time.

Game sewn up and early substitutions for Silva and Aguero would be nice as it would clearly indicate preserving them for the weekend.

We may have to wait and see.. If city kills porto with a ton of goals, Mancini might sub him off in half time... and Kun might still play 70min on Sat.. 😉

can see them paired with him, not without. he was MOTM last home game, i am normally one to speculate when it comes to rests but i am really not concerned about aguero. silva would worry me more with the abundance of mids and not getting the rest aguero got in the 1st leg

Silva has also been relatively out of form.

          Silva 2011 > Silva 2012

I think he's the most likely to get rested if Mancini feels like a tinker.

    RVP OUT, Rooney IN

Ignoring Rooney for a moment, it doesn't really get any bigger than that transfer-wise in FPL, and is a true test of the size of a manager's cahunas. While it can easily be argued that this is a short-term move at best and foolhardy at worst, the decision to sell 13.4m Van Persie and leading FPL points scorer is not a reflection of the man's (undoubted) quality, but a realisation of 3 key factors.

    1. Arsenal are struggling as a team

    PL10 W4 D2 L4 F18 A12

Arsenal have scored 18 goals in their last 10 PL matches. 7 of those were against Blackburn - a team that has conceded 22 goals in their last 10 PL matches, and as such are not a reliable indicator of a team's form. Arsenal are not going to be playing the likes of Blackburn every week.

Arsenal's away form is also troubling. Since the turn of the year, a 2-1 defeat to Fulham, followed by a 2-3 loss to Swansea, was followed up with a scoreless draw at Bolton.

Some will point out that it doesn't matter if Arsenal win, lose or draw, so long as Van Persie scores or assists, but away from home and against the tougher teams at the Emirates, I'd argue Van Persie(c) is no longer a cert.

    2. Arsenal's fixtures aren't great.

Their next 3 read; Tottenham(H), Liverpool(A), Newcastle(H). While I wouldn't rule out Van Persie scoring in any of these games, I'd have doubts about captaining him. The Newcastle home game stands out, but by this time, Newcastle should have Tiote and Cabaye restored to their midfield meaning this will be a much tougher game than it looks currently on paper.

    3. Other strikers are hitting great form/fixtures.

Perhaps this is the most critical of considerations. We only have 3 striker places up for grabs, and the likes of Rooney, Aguero, Adebayor and Ba all make very strong cases for themselves.

Rooney - 4 in 2 against Chelsea and Liverpool, now faces Norwich(A), Tottenham(A), and WBA(H).
Aguero - not in goal scoring form but a sweet run of fixtures including, Blackburn(H), Bolton(H), and Swansea(A).
Adebayor - tricky fixtures (Arsenal(A), Man Utd(H), Everton(A)), but difficult to drop after a goal and 4 assists in his last game,
Ba - a goal on his return from the ACON and 3 home games in 4 against Wolves, Sunderland and Norwich.

Sure, there will be other areas of concern in FPL squads to address, but for those managers looking to catch a mini-league league leader, I think losing Van Persie now for another captain option is not such a crazy decision as it may first seem.

Right - good premise - It indicates that, imo, RVP is not outstanding captain material. You've made a good argument for this.

but the alternatives have their drawbacks too. This would convince me about captaincy, but from now to the end of the season, RVP + 2 from that list will score higher than any other combo. Maybe 😉

Just think of all that juicy 13m you can spend on the rest of your squad, though 😀

I have my doubts (obviously) that RVP + 2 others will be the highest scoring combo, but when you also factor in upgrading a cheapie defender to Kompany or Srktel, etc. it's worth considering.

the everton media man tweeted saying the merseyside derby has been pencilled in for 20/21 march (the midweek after gwk29) which means that

              everton v arsenal
              qpr v liverpool

cannot take place that gwk if it happens

on the flip side rvp will have a double week at some point so youll want him back for that

i duno whether to just keep him n bench gwk29 or not

          Certainly adds more options!

Realistically, I can only see Ade and maybe Kun having a shout after 28, when fixtures change. Assuming Ronney are Ba are certainties.

similar situation to Silva imo. They won't match their 1st half scores, but will they be outscored by 3/4 players? I don't know about that.

          It's a big call - cajones indeed.

I agree that the other strikers look a better prospect than RVP in the short term.

But the Gunner fixture list eases up for long term. It is also unlikely that Arsenal will be in such poor form for the rest of the season. And add to that to finanical cost of losing him, many will be in the same boat as me - getting him early at around 12.2m, that's a lot of value to loose for a potentially short term decision.

So it may look good for the next 3, but not for the next 13 IMO.

There is that - I actually bought him at 12.1m - and it is a punt, no getting away from that, but only the Wigan and Norwich home games scare me. They're a long way away though and both teams are likely to be fighting for relegation while what will Arsenal be fighting for?

Everytime the other person I put it on bettered him or equalled (more often bettered).

I wouldn't want to get rid. I mean, he'll still be trying to impress Citeh, Real Madrid with his last 13games for Arsenal 🙂

Not sounding very positive for the Roon then? Been patting myself on the back ever since buying him in at 11.9 last week. Oh how I curse my FPL luck this year, just goes from bad to worse.

Evening gents looking for advice on a transfer. Have 2 freebies and an okay team on paper this week, but may as well use one freebie than lose it.

    Sorensen (Vorm)
    Evans, Richards, Simpson
    Bale, Silva, Essegnon, Dempsey
    RVP, Ba, Aguero

    McClean, Taiwo, Kelly

    £.8m bank...Thinking 1 of these:
    1. Richards -> Kompany (more guaranteed)
    2. Taiwo --> Caulker (free up cash in future)
    3. Taiwo --> Cahill

    Any suggestions?

Great team...if you were to do anything I think Richards to the security of Kompany could be an option rather than losing the transfer.

Taiwo is at home and more than capable of assisting.

Enough money in a bank. After tonight and 2morrow games thinking of doing FT Sturridge to Kun. Good? Other option is Valencia to Yaya who seems attacking mid atm with very low ownership and captain Ba. Thinking of doing the Kun transfer atm. Please thoughts.

Evans in my opinion. Evans has a chance of keeping a clean sheet. Taiwo will not keep a clean sheet, and his chances of making an assist or a goal are smaller vs Fulham.

looking for advice for FT, currently thinking kun

    Mignolet/Kurl
    Cahill Senderos Kelly Kompany Taiwo
    Demp Silva sess mcclean bale
    ba rvp dzeko

defence is obviously a mess, but it seems like i don't have any chance to sort it out anytime soon.

    any advice?

I think you need to get rid of Silva and get a cheaper mid like Pilkington, Chamberlain, or even Sigurdsson. Also get rid of Dzeko, it looks like Balloteli is going to take his spot in the starting line up.

Use the extra fund to get defendors like T aylor, Evans, Lescott, Walker, Assou-Ekotto.

Defence isn't as bad as you think.........Senderos could be back soon and Fulham have some decent fixtures approaching.

I think Taiwo shoud be traded soon, don't see many clean sheets there for QPR.

Cahill could do ok, certainly worth keeping now that you've got him, at least for the next couple.

Dzeko to Aguero seems obvious if you can afford it, but wait and see what City's Europa match brings first.

No United cover which needs to be resolved in a few weeks at the very latest. Taiwo -> Evans?

Might also want to think about trading in Sess perhaps if you need to free up cash. Sunderland fixtures are mixed on paper, and you have Mclean to cover them anyway.

      Few thoughts there for you.

    Lindy - Sorensen
    Enrique - Senderos - Evans - Caulker - Santon
    Silva - Valencia - Dempsey - Walters - Sessegnon
    RVP - Aguero - Ba

    1FT, 0.2m in le banque.

Clearly there are some issues to resolve, but with no outstanding options thrsuting themself into my face, and the fact that I can still field a half-decent team this GW, I'm tempted to hold on and have 2 FT next week with which I can give my team a better overall tweak, and may well also have more news on Lindy and Senderos soon.

    Thoughts?
