Scout Notes – Euro 2012 Friendlies

Filed under: Euro 2012 - Posted by: Paul

Mario Gomez is amongst the goals as Germany see off Israel and return to winning ways. Franck Ribery helps France to a 2-0 home win over Serbia as the hosts ring the changes and trial a 4-3-3, while Kyriakos Papadopoulos gets the only goal of the game as Greece chalk up a narrow win in Armenia:

France 2 Serbia 0
Laurent Blanc rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for France’s 2-0 win over Serbia last night, with only two players – Karim Benzema and Philippe Mexes – keeping the same position from Sunday’s win over Iceland. There were plenty changes to the backline, with Laurent Koscielny, Gael Clichy and Anthony Reveillere all handed starts, though Blanc’s midfield plans were disrupted after just four minutes as Yann M’Vila limped off with a worrying ankle injury. Franck Ribery opened the scoring after 10 minutes, netting after the opposition keeper had spilled Clichy’s cross, before Florent Malouda fired home the second from the edge of the area just six minutes later as Les Bleus extended their unbeaten run to 20 matches. Post-match, Blanc was reported to have said M’Vila has “a big ankle sprain” but didn’t expect the player to miss the tournament – further tests are expected today.

France Starting XI: Lloris; Reveillere, Koscielny, Mexes (Rami 72), Clichy; Cabaye (Martin 61), M’Vila (Diarra 5), Malouda (Ben Arfa 76); Nasri, Benzema (Giroud 61), Ribery (Menez 61).

Armenia 0 Greece 1
Greece recorded their first clean sheet in six games as they clinched a 1-0 win in Armenia. Fantasy managers will be frustrated with a change in keeper, as Michail Sifakis replaced Konstantinos Chalkias between the posts. Sokratis Papastathopoulos started at right-back with Vasileios Torosidis afforded the night off after picking up an injury at the weekend – this allowed Schalke man Kyriakos Papadopoulos to return to centre-half and he offered further evidence of his attacking potential by grabbing the only goal of the game. Priced at 4.5, Papadopoulos is one of the most popular players in the McDonald’s game and currently has over 16% ownership, though this will no doubt increase after last night’s display. Sotiris Ninis failed to shake off an injury, allowing Kostas Fortounis to make his first start for the national team in a night where Fernando Santos’ side failed to make the scoreline more substantial by missing two second half spot-kicks; Georgios Samaras (70) and Kostas Katsouranis (86) were the culprits.

Greece Starting XI: Sifakis; Papastathopoulos (Makos 62), A. Papadopoulos, K. Papadopoulos, Holebas (Tzavellas 60); Katsouranis, Maniatis, Karagounis (Fotakis 46); Fortounis (Samaras 46), Gekas (Ioannnis 62), Salpingidis (Mitroglou 85).

Germany 2 Israel 0
With seven of their Bayern contingent back on board, Germany bounced back from their weekend 5-3 defeat by Switzerland to see off Israel 2-0. Joachim Low made a host of changes, as Toni Kroos partnered Sami Khedira in the double pivot due to Bastian Schweinsteiger’s injury, while Mario Gomez was given the nod ahead of Miroslav Klose up front – Gomez justified his selection by opening the scoring five minutes before the break, with Thomas Muller providing the assist. Low made five changes later in the second half, with Mesut Ozil the only attacking player to be afforded the full 90 minutes, as Andre Schurrle – on as a sub for Lukas Podolski – firing home a superb second.

Germany Starting XI: Neuer; Boateng, Badstuber, Mertesacker, Lahm; Kroos (Gotze 86), Khedira (Bender 88); Muller (83), Ozil, Podolski (Schurrle 66); Gomez (Klose 66).

Can someone help me to clear up a few quibbles with the Fantasy Pro site, please?

How do the transfers work? I’m chairman, but when I set the auction up I wasn’t asked when I wanted the transfer window(s) to be. Can I do this?

I the first round of auction during the transfer window (ie not the setting-up-your-team auction) you can only bid on players not in anyone’s squad, right? And I assume who you want to remove from your squad for the new player when bidding? Do you get the funds you bought the incumbent player with? (Say I have a transfer budget of 5m and in the window I want to sell Jack Buckland who I bought for 25m, could I bid 30m for a new keeper?)

    Hope that makes sense. Ta.

    cheeky_ash says:

Well this now has to be England’s worst ever squad surely for a major championship. Very Poor midfield now that the likes of Mr Lampard / Barry have gone as well, and besides Rooney the attacking options look woeful.

I think England will line up against France: -

    ————————————————-HART—————————————————
    JOHNSON——————–TERRY——————CAHILL————————-COLE
    —————————MILNER/JAGS—————-PARKER——————————–
    WALCOTT——————————–GERRARD———————————–YOUNG
    ———————————————–CARROL————————————————

There are better players that we could have had in the squad:-

    - Scholes – I know he’s old, and probably wouldn’t have come if asked – but as Zidane said when he retired that his biggest regret in football was never too play along side Scholes! – world class.
    - Wilshire – a future world class player, shame he has glass legs then.
    - Richards – far better than G Johnson (who will leave England V exposed)
    - G Holt – Better than A Carrol I think at holding the ball up and knows where the net is!
    - A Johnson – quite frankly how Downing has got on the plane for the Euro’s is beyond me? 11/12 stats 0 goals, 0 assists!!!
    - Carrick – shame really as on his day can spray the ball around lovely – shame he has his head firmly up his arse then.
    - Rodwell

Shame the injuries for Lamps / Barry didn’t happen earlier really as we could of cut our losses knowing we won’t win the Euro’s this time around and used the new generation instead and finally put out to pasture Gerrard, Terry, Cole amongst others.

When I first saw Jones play for Man U early in the season I thought – great player, but his form seemed too drop off, and looked average for me – a player for the future no doubt then. I do take your point though and maybe parker / gerrard in the middle makes more sense.

Actually there’s another player which could have come in which may have been overlooked somewhat. J cole. he can play in the hole, as can young…but if young plays in the hole – sadly you know who maybe selected on the left midland – unless Roy is brave and goes with the OX – who I think could change games – another future world class player!

          ajay_kl says:

Jones had indeed dropped off a bit, some of that has been injury related though. People need to bear in mind he is only 20 and has more to give, if we wish to build for future then he should get a good shot at the Euro’s. Milner and Jags can’t play CDM so Gerrard will have to sit back there IMO with Parker.

As far as LW is concerned then we are trouble for first 2 games, it would have to be Milner/Downing really. Ox wont start unfortunately, when he came on against Norway he gave us a bit more directness to the game. He will likely to be an impact sub. When Rooney is back he should slot in behind Carroll/Welbeck and Young move to LW.

Out of those you’ve mentioned, only Richards and Johnson would I have liked to see in the squad and they haven’t played a lot recently (Johnson needs a move if he wants to get back in the England frame).

I think Barry/Lampard will be quite a big miss as I’m not sure about Milner/Jones/Henderson in that other CM role but every team has to deal with injuries.

I do think though Carrol could surprise here, and if Roys brave he could knock Downing on the head and feed the OX instead.

That would mean the MF of Gerrard / Park in the middle and Walcott, and the OX out wide. With Young in the hole.

            That seems more balanced really.

I’d much rather Milner played than Jones.

He’s seriously overrated and not ready to be starting for England (or Man U).

As for the second bit, Walcott has had a good season with a lot of goals/assists and you want to replace him with someone with only a handful of PL starts who shouldn’t even be in the squad…

Milner – just what does he do that is so special? Which position does he play best in? I have honestly never seen him really affect a game. Jones plays for Manutd and is a regular. Milner was nowhere to be seen in the City team.

As for Walcott, cant stand him, cant pass, cant cross, cant shoot. Oh but he is fast – let him run in the Olympics then.

              CABAYE4 says:

8 goals and 11 assists in PL last year, not bad for someone who apparently can’t cross or shoot.

Milner made 26 PL appearances, Jones 29, not a lot in that.

And Jones only played a couple in CM as well.

Also is that role about really affecting a game, whoever plays needs to get on the ball and get it to the likes of Walcott and Young and imo Milner’s passing and distribution is significantly better than Jones’.

        Thats the key…

England are going to setup just like Greece – it’s our only chance a la Chelsea v Barca.

We won’t get the ball that much, but if we build a solid defence and central midfield – with massive pace of Walcott and Ox – we could surprise.

sorry to sound so negative to you all, and yes I still do believe if we are very disaplined and with v quick counter attacks – who knows!

      Jedmonds13 says:

If Carroll bring’s his shooting boots and scoring head, England will be fine and won’t be in peril. Mexes and Rami will have no idea who this 7ft geordie is! He will be very difficult to manage and keep at bay.

I disagree Young will be playing in the hole as second striker, can score from anywhere and is England’s most tidy finisher accompanied with blistering pace and the skill to beat a man.

Wilshere, Rodwell and Cleverley are a shame especially the former, Wilshere can pull the strings from midfield and is in the Sneijder mould, a big miss.

Scott Sinclair deserves a place over Downing, has scored 8 goals and reached double figure assists for high flying Swansea last season, couldn’t do anymore.

Glen Johnson is a liability, one moment away from making a catastrophic error, would rather Micah Richards.

It seems Roy is on some bizarre redemption mission trying to prove he shouldn’t have been sacked at Liverpool. Henderson has been a nothing player this year, a worthy replacement to Lampard, both have proven they can’t play next to Gerrard. Adam Johnson should have been called up in his place, a perfect impact player shown more than Henderson and Downing in his cameo appearances for City than the Liverpool pair have shown all season.

The Lineup will look like this if all are fit:

      ——————————Hart——————————
      Johnson—–Cahill—————Terry————-Cole
      Walcott——–Gerrard———Parker——-Downing
      ——————————Young—————————-
      ——————————Carroll—————————-

Unfortunately I think Downing will be starting as he’s played a lot for England over the last year or so, Oxlade-Chamberlain will be an impact player, think we’ll know for certain after the game against Belgium.
