Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Euro 2012 Friendlies

Michal Kadlec nets a penalty as the Czech Republic suffer a shock 2-1 defeat to Hungary. Roman Shirokov scores twice and provides an assist in Russia’s 3-0 win over Italy, while Andriy Yarmolenko sets up both Oleg Gusev’s goals as Ukraine lose their unbeaten run to Austria:

Czech Republic 1 Hungary2
Michal Bilek fielded Michal Kadlec at centre-half last night as the Czech Republic stumbled to an unexpected 2-1 loss to Hungary. With questions surrounding the heart of defence, Kadlec’s shift from left-back allowed David Limbersky a starting role, with the former partnering Tomas Sivok in the middle for the first half. Sivoc made way for Roman Hubnik after half-time, with Bilek keen to try out other permutations in his side’s final friendly before their opening group game against Russia next Friday. Priced at 5.5 in the McDonald’s game, Kadlec’s spot-kick duties have seen him snapped up by 8.3% of Fantasy managers and he served a reminder of his potential by slotting home from the spot on 25 minutes after Milan Baros had been fouled in the box. The Czech’s five game unbeaten run came to an end, though, after Adam Gyurcso slotted home the winner for Hungary with just a couple of minutes remaining.

Czech Republic Starting XI: Cech; Gebre Selassie, Sivok (Hubnik 46), Kadlec, Limbersky; Plasil (Lafata 79), Jiracek (Hubschman 79); Rezek (Rajtoral 72), Kolar (Darida 61), Pilar; Baros (Pekhart 62).

Italy 0 Russia 3
With their Tuesday game against Luxembourg cancelled due to an earthquake, Italy were left with just last night’s game against Russia as part of their preparations. Cesare Prandelli started with a 4-3-1-2, lining up Riccardo Montolivo behind a front pair of Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano before moving to a 4-3-3 just before 70 minutes – Balotelli was shifted left, with Antonio Di Natale and Sebastiano Giovinco making up the new front line. At the back, Federico Balzaretti started at left-back before being replaced by Angelo Ogbonna, while Morgan De Sanctis hardly covered himself in glory in goal, producing an inept display after coming on for Gianluigi Buffon at half-time.

İtaly Starting XI: Buffon (De Sanctis 46); Maggio, Barzagli, Bonucci, Balzaretti (Ogbonna 53); De Rossi (Motta 61), Pirlo (Di Natale 69), Marchisio; Montolivo (Nocerino 61); Balotelli, Cassano (Giovinco 69).

Dick Advocaat gave each of his two main keepers 45 minutes apiece in the 3-0 win – Vyacheslav Malafeev was replaced by Igor Akinfeev at half-time but, with both impressing, the Russia boss may still have trouble picking his first-choice stopper. Aleksandr Anyukov and Marat Izmailov were both rested, with Advocaat refusing to take any risks on either player’s fitness, while Alan Dzagoev was handed his first start over the recent run of friendlies and seems fully recovered from a toe injury, lasting 85 minutes before making way for Aleksandr Kokorin.

Aleksandr Kerzhakov opening the scoring after being set up in the box by Roman Shirokov before the latter stole the show with his nation’s next two goals – priced at 6.0, Shirokov is sure to see a hike in ownership thanks to last night’s display, with just 7.1% of Fantasy managers currently snapping up his services. The 3-0 triumph means Russia have now recorded eight clean sheets in their last 10 matches, demonstrating their potential at the back ahead of the Group A clashes with Czech Republic, Poland and Greece.

Russia Starting XI: Malafeev (Akinfeev 46); Nababkin, İgnashevich, A.Berezutsky, Zhirkov (Kombarov 87); Zyryanov, Denisov, Shirokov; Dzagoev (Kokorin 85), Kerzhakov (Pavlyuchenko 62), Arshavin.

Austria 3 Ukraine 2
Oleg Blokhin’s Ukraine side lost their six-match unbeaten run at the hands of Austria last night. Andriy Voronin and Marko Devic kept their places up front after the 4-0 midweek win over Estonia, though both were replaced by Andriy Shevchenko and Artem Milevskyi at half-time. Andriy Yarmolenko maintained his strong recent form by providing a pair of assists – both goals came courtesy of Oleg Gusev. The latter has now netted four times in the last three matches (including a couple of spot-kicks), though despite being classified as a midfielder in the McDonald’s game, is currently fielded as a right-back.

Blokhin handed Oleksandr Goryainov and Maksym Koval a half apiece between the sticks and has now given game time to all three of his keepers in the last couple of matches, with Andriy Patov playing 90 minutes against Estonia. The result means Ukraine have recorded just a single clean sheet in their last five friendlies, suggesting they may be a risky investment at the back, though they still offer plenty threat going forward, having netted at least twice in eight of their last nine matches.

Ukraine Starting XI: Goryainov (Koval 46); Gusev, Mikhalik, Khacheridi, Rakitskiy; Yarmolenko, Tymoschuk, Nazarenko (Rotan 63), Konoplyanka (Butko 59); Voronin, (Shevchenko 46) Devic (Milevskiy 46).

Already have him in some formats. Yarmolenko's the preferred pick, though.

I already have Yarmolenko, Kadlec & Shirokov, so yesterday's results were quite reassuring. Except for my double Italian defence....

Italy are actually second favourites to lose their clean sheet. So out of those two i'd say Iniesta, although i don't like how diluted the midfield attacking points are for Spain.

Sorry, just seen this. No idea who's starting in goal for Greece. I like your defence and attack, the only question mark being Huntelaar, especially given the 'RVP to start' rumours. I fancy Poland to score so working Kuba or Lewondowski and replacing the Greek keeper is what i'd do, it's just my opinion on a single game though! Nice team 🙂

It will be one or the other. The Spanish midfield is too good for one to make way. The favourite on here seems to be Llorente but me, and apparently TW 🙂 seems to think Torres. Either is a punt.

Anybody playing the Fantasy League Clasic game?

Signed up a couple of nights ago and paid 10 quid for 2 teams. Went back today and I can't make head nor tail of it?

I've read the rules about 20 times over the past hour and can't work out how you settle on your final 11 for the first wave of group games. i thought it would be a simple case of set your 11 for the first 8 games, set your 11 for the next 8 games etc.... but you can sub during games, do this, do that, jesus!

Anyone care to enlighten me? if not, I look forward to the torrent of abuse for being thick!

Haven't got to that point yet playing Pro, but as I understand it, using supersubs you can preset your subs to come in for each successive game. I don't think substitutions are effective till the next KO. So if you schedule or action a sub during a game it doesn't take effect till the next game.

Thing is, the supersub thing is set up so you can set your team for each game.

It makes it look like you can field each of your 15 players depending on who's playing on which day. But that can't be right! surely you have to pick 11 players to see you through the first 8 games, then change the line up for the next set of 8 etc....

I feel like a right thick twonk but I just can't work it out!!!

you talking about the mcdonalds game?

if so, its run pretty similarly to the champions league fantasy game this last season. anyways how it works is after a matchday you can sub players of and you can change your captain if you want. however once a player is subbed off or a captain has his captaincy removed, you cannot go back. this means its important to have one good captain choice per day so in case your first captain fails you can switch to your day two captain, etc.

also make sure all your day 1 players are in your starting 11 and make sure all your day 4 players are on your bench. then if a day 1 player fails you can sub them out for a day 2, 3 or 4 player. if they do well then you keep them in obviously. because of this format it is very important to have a good squad of 15 players not just a good starting 11.

also you can play a 2-5-3 if you want which is nice

    Gaz

Tis done. I couldn't think of anything particularly amusing for a team name off the top of my head so we are currently called The Gaz Ketsus - With Beauty! With Care! With Speed!

With Beauty! With Care! With Speed! is the official motto of the Ukrainian Boy Scout movement. It has a definite Soviet-era slogan ring to it but at the same time is deeply ambiguous for an organisation of young boys camping out in the woods. Strange. Anyway, if you come up with something better maybe the organisers will let us change it. Good luck with the hangover.

Youve accidentally put Ashley cole in there.

Separate point, why have a load of teams now gone for perquis in the polish defense? Previously everyone had Pizacezh (sp). Is it just the price difference, thought the latter had strong attacking threat?

I'd say Mandzukic OR Jelavic, i wouldn't double up, and according to Forca(the resident Croatian) Jelavic will start. I've gone for Jelavic and Strinc so that i don't spend too much on the Croatians but get good coverage. The money is better spent elsewhere imo.

I understand cheap defence by design, but, if you don't mind me saying, yours is like having Wolves, Bolton and Blackburn defenders and not having Jonny Evans or a Newcastle defender.

I would consider Alba. You don't have 38 games to hold out for an eventual cleanie.

This one is tied to a knock out competition so there can only be a certain amount of players you see, otherwise there won't be enough games in the Euro tournament! There are other leagues that aren't a knock out tournament as well. I haven't stored the codes for them though, sorry. There is a scout league code tons of articles back!

No Italy are looking horrible atm. 3 straight defeats, negative media attention and they just don't seem to have too much about them. Spain will win that comfortably imo. France are going well just now and I don't see England causing them too many problems. Think a draw is the best England will get.

got it, thanks. I figure that he could always be good for an assist or a goal, could get xavi instead.

I initially had young and nasri in my team instead of yarm and shirokov but took them out so i could upgrade olsson and lewandoski to anyukov and huntelaar who will now become rvp. i'm thinking young would be the option playing in the hole but I think france will be a tough game for them and italy just let 3 past russia... hmmm

Yeah it's a tough decision and prediction to make, I'm not expecting a lot of goals in the
Eng v Fra game probably a highest score will be 2-1, the later games could be good against Sweden and Ukraine, both a little bit leaky. I'm thinking of putting in Benzema after gw1...

Hi guys! My first post, in order to seek the opinion of the veterans here. Here's my current squad:

    Szczęsny - Given
    M. Olsson - Strinic - Piszczek - Zhirkov - M.Kadlec
Shirokov - Mandzukic - Ribery - Pirlo - Van Der Vaart
    Torres - Gomez - Ibrahimovic

    And planned changes, option one:

    Torres => Kerzhakov
    Zhirkov => Raul Albiol
    M.Kadlec => Evra/Mexes

    Leaving me with 0.5.

    Option two:

    Torres stays. Changing defenders:
    Zhirkov => A.Berezutski
    Kadlec => Evra

Either way, I want to get rid of one defender from group A.
I'm still not sure about Gomez - he might see some rotation.

Looking at your squad, VDV isn't a starter

I like option 1 but Raul Abiol won't start
I would go for Debuchy of France. 0.5 cheaper and very attacking

Debuchy? Are you sure he's the first option, before Réveillère?

        Hmmmm. Yeah, they prefer Sneijder.

I considered changing to De Jong - he usually plays as the second DMC, he could get some points for interceptions/tackles and he'd free up a lot of money for other positions. That would mean I'd have to restructure my whole team. Again >.<

@Count: If that question was aimed at me - I'm more likely to WC after GW2.

Debuchy is looking like the starter before Reveliere. I wouldn't get De Jong. He will likely only get 1-2 RB points and they will be cancelled out when he gets a yellow card

lose vdv and ribery and draft in sneijder and ozil!
think theres better options than pirlo
gomez could be risky as it could be klose starting. if you want german i'd get mueller or podolski

Not getting Robben - he's overhyped, one-trick pony. In the CL final he wasted pretty much all corners.

Reading the rumours about RvP starting in place of Huntelaar, I decided to get him in instead of Gomez.
Got Berezutski and Ozil - that left me with 13m. If I get Debuchy, I have 7,5 left. I have no idea what midfielder should I buy with that.

There's Juan Mata, but I find him average. He's playing because he's from a big club. I'd get someone from Portugal, weren't they playing so poorly and against Germany in the first week. Maybe Marchisio? Maybe someone cheap, to save some dough for better defenders.

    Latest edition -

    Cech,
    Strinic, Papadopoulos, Perquis, Zhirkov
    Sneijder, Gotze, Dzagoev
    Ibrahimovich, Van Persie, Ronaldo

    Lindegaard, Jones, Elm, Yarmaloenko.

Almost certainly will change again but trying to outcast those not definite to start. Jelavic the main one. WIll probably have to swap Jones out but surely Van Persie is a definite starter??? Any thoughts and similarly priced nailed on alternatives if you think any won't start. Go raibh maith agat!

Cheers Aptimus. Yeah. Gotze is class but will probably only start if Schweinsteiger doesn't. I know Jones is unlikely but might take an injured Johnson's starting spot yet. Elm is the one I'm gonna wait a bit longer on. Cheap as chips and I'm being persuaded by reading articles like below.Any midfeield, defensive suggestions? Thinking bout Eriksen. As much as the Dutch know everything about him he's still quality. Larsson is another i have in mind but purely for free kicks and corners. General play not consistent enough. Might even go for McGeady or Andrews. Keith Andrews will score in this tournament, free kick rolled to him and bang from 25 yards. I can see it!

Apparently this is the England team. Do we never learn! Milner is too slow to be a winger that was proven at the WC and why the hell isn't Walcott in his place? Had a great season this year and offers a heck of a lot more pace. His decision making isn't always great but I was sure he would start for England after this season.

After a fairly rubbish first attempt, I've completely changed my team around, would appreciate some feedback:

    Szczęsny (Given)
    M. Olsson, K. Papadopoulos, Zhirkov (Strinić) (M. Kadlec)
    Young, Iniesta, Yarmolenko, Mandžukić, Özil
    Robben, Lewandowski (Ibrahimović)

why have a load of teams now gone for perquis in the polish defense? Previously everyone had Pizacezh (sp). Is it just the price difference, thought the latter had strong attacking threat?

Just because he's cheaper for me... I'd prefer Piszczek but the 0.5m saved can be spent better elsewhere for me.

    Lindegaard Given
Zhirkov M. Kadlec Boateng Torossidis Debuchy
    Källström Andrews Özil Sneijder Young
    Pavlyuchenko Torres Carroll

    Cheers lads...

not sure how to put this nicely but your strikers make me want to puke.... torres is the only one of those i MIGHT consider. please draft in some combo of the following: ronaldo (though I think the others are better), rvp, robben, ibra, jelavic, lewandoski, podolski, muller. even a punt on either klose or gomez should do better than carroll!

assuming he starts, chalkias is a good and cheap option between the posts
I think that ibra is better swedish coverage than kallstrom. shirokov is probably a better mid for that price range

      rest looks pretty solid though!

Nice team but upgrade one of your keepers and spend less on defenders. I would keep Zhirkov. Lindegaard and Given will both concede in nearly every game. Can finish your gameweek with just 2 defenders so easy enough to get a good keeper with savings on defenders.
