Di Matteo Dismissed

Chelsea have this morning confirmed that they have “parted company” with Roberto Di Matteo, who leaves his position at manager of the London club with immediate effect.

In a statement issued this morning the club state…

“The team’s recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season…. The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager.”

The move follows last night’s 3-0 defeat to Juventus in Turin, which left the club on the brink of Champions League elimination – a season after Di Matteo led them to glory in the competition.

Although reports circulated this morning indicated that Di Matteo “expected” to be dismissed for last night’s result, the events will send shockwaves given that, up until recently, the Italian had steered the club to the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea now go into the crucial clash with Man City at the weekend, presumably without a manager. It seems likely that a replacement has been lined up in the background, with Rafa Benitez a popular name being discussed in the morning press. Pep Guardiola is the overwhelming fans’ favourite, though he is expected to remain on a sabbatical after leaving Barcelona in the summer, while Harry Redknapp’s name has been thrown into the hat this morning.

For Fantasy managers, this leaves us pondering all kinds of issues. Clearly we will now anticipate a fairly extensive overhaul of the team and tactics in the coming weeks, with our established thinking now in doubt.

Immediate changes ahead of the weekend would seem unlikely, although Chelsea’s preferred back four, their midfield formation and certainly the situation up front all now seem in flux while the dust settles.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Despite the recent run of form I still think sacking Di Matteo is a rash decision, especially mid-season. Did they really expect to beat Juventus - the best team in Italy - in Turin? Did they really think they'd be above the Manchester clubs having only recently taken on a new, more 'pro-football' play-style?

And to think even as an Arsenal fan I was starting to like Chelsea...

Roman should have waited till March or so before sacking RDM. Then he should have got Roberto Martinez. We all know he would have pretty much guaranteed 100% win record in his favourite time of the year. The last two or so months.

I've seen quite a few posters this week (and pretty much every week before) tying themselves in knots trying to decide whether to play certain players who face each other. This weeks prime example is Berbatov vs. Begovic/Cameron.

The logic goes something like this:

    - If Berbatov scores then Begovic/Cameron lose their clean sheet(s).
    - If Begovic/Cameron keep a clean sheet then Berbatov hasn't scored.
    - If they can't all succeed then I must be best off benching one of them.

This is essentially true, but ignores several issues:

    - Picking all of them gives you the best opportunity to earn points whatever the outcome (granted, if Stoke concede and Berbatov isn't involved you suffer but that would be the case whatever you do).
    - If you bench Berbatov and he scores and ruins your clean sheets you'll be furious.
    - If you bench Begovic/Cameron and they shut out Berbatov you'll be furious.
    - How often have you had a GW where all of your defenders kept cleansheets and all of your attackers scored? What's that? Never? Well maybe you should worry about this a little less.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that you should judge each player on their individual merits and their likelihood of scoring points in the gameweek completely independently of all of your other players and pick your best XI on that basis.

If you think Stoke have a better chance of a cleansheet than West Ham or whoever your next best option would be, play your Stoke defenders. If you think Berbatov has a better chance of scoring than Maloney or whoever, then play him. You'll make fewer costly mistakes that way.

All that said, this is a game of opinions and varying tactics - this is how I play the game but if you want to play differently and it works for you, more power to you. I'm just trying to provoke a little interesting debate 🙂

We badly need to recapture some of last season's form, 4-3-3 seems like the way to go, brings out the best in HBA (amongst others) although the loss of Cabaye is going to be a blow whatever we do. I think we have to try it.

Indeed. Was our winning formula last season. Question i would have is how would Cisse fit.in. With Ba on.form he would have to go in up top. Cabs is a blow no doubt, and something tells me Jonas' range of passing wont make up for it! 😉

Ha! Bless Jonas, he's got his attributes but spraying the ball about like Cabaye isn't one of them!

You're right - Cisse would either have to be on the bench as the first option to change things round or he'd have to be prepared to put a shift in on the left of the 3.

Would be nice to see Marveaux/Ferguson get a bit of a run, I like the look of both of them.

      Very well put.

One other factor to consider is that spreading the risk is sometimes a better idea. Although it works in favour of your argument, it could also mean that instead of playing two Stoke defenders this week vs. Berba, perhaps it would make more sense for your to play another defender.

True, there's a 'hedge your bets' type approach to factor in, although from a purely statistical approach you'd be better off doubling up if you believe the cleansheet is more likely - long term that should work out but it's a tough tactic to stay true to.

        Ha!

Well that's slightly different since you can't play them all but I'd still apply the same logic - who do you think is more likely to keep a cleansheet - Begovic or Schwarzer? Play whoever you answer to that question.

Do you think Berbatov is more likely to score than your alternatives? If yes, play him.

        Simple game this 😉

Torres up front with Gerrard behind him with Kuyt and someone (cant remember who) on the left? Just wondering if he takes charge how he could get Chelsea to line up.

      ----------- Cech
      Ivan - Terry - Cahill - Cole
      ----- Lampard - Ramires
      Mata ---- Oscar ----- Hazard
      ------------ Torres

      Yup, Benitez played 4-2-3-1

Two attacking full backs, solid CBs, Chelsea's defence is fine.

Masherano and Alonso were in the double pivot, so a destroyer and a playmaker. For this read Mikel and Lampard/Ramires? Though I wouldn't say Mikel is as good a DM as Masch, and neither Lampard nor Ramires is exactly an Alonso-mould playmaker.

Then Liverpool had X - Gerrard - X playing behind Torres, with Gerrard pushed up as a support striker and essentially given free reign.

The two Xs were filled with whichever shite wide players Liverpool had at the time (Babel, Riera etc or Kuyt)
So Chelsea's 3 behind Torres are better in this regard, though again, there's noone of Gerrard's mould exactly, I'm sure Benitez won't be complaining about those three.

He will basically be playing the same formation as Di Matteo, but might give Marin a run out if he wants more natural width.

Benitez's formation also morphed into a 4-4-1-1 with Gerrard pushi up and the wide players dropping deeper.

Yeah, thanks.for the confirmation. Im thinking he could look.to stick Hazard or Mata in behind torres permanently. Watching the "interchanging" 3 in.Hazard Mata and Oscar it seems that Mata is the most effective in that central role.

Doesn't make me mad if he goes to them. I don't see it happening but what you have to understand in La Liga, especially with the bigger teams, 4 years of being the manager is a very very long time. Most managers don't last that long and it is a much more pressurised environment. Even if they had won the CL, Pep would have left. He was tired and worn out.

They'd count exactly as normal - the nature/reason for the goals doesn't affect the points.

Any thoughts on what with this team? 1FT and 0.2 in the bank. On 676 points..

My thoughts at the minute are Ba to Suarez GW15 and Walcott to Silva probably funded by down grading Baines (and get him back with the January WC).

    Begovic
    McCartney Baines Rafael
    Mata Walcott Michu Puncheon
    Ba Van PersieTevez

    Subs: Tremmel Gorkss Nelsen Fellaini

    Sugguestions welcome..

He never. He was only there for the end of the season as an agreement and yet he won a trophy too.

            Mourinho, Hiddink, Ancelloti, Di Matteo.

Oh no, we mustn't get rid of Wenger, who would we get to replace him, we would be finished - Honestly!

Totally agree, the top managers if they had any sense should tell them where to stick their job offer. The owner who controls the club decided no striker was going to be purchased after winning the CL. This is the main reason they are (struggling).

No. But I think he did have a good connection with the Chelsea player, which helped his man management. But all in all, I agree with you.

That being said, it's sad it went down this way. If this was the plan, it wasn't right to give him the contract at all. Should have just gotten a new manager right away.

Me too - the fact that Roman/Chelsea are complete arses is completely true but it's clouding the fact that RDM was not good enough for West Brom and got phenomenally lucky last season.

Perhaps. Trouble is they had ridiculous luck at the end of last season and as a Manager RDM was sacked by West Brom. The only reason he got the job was because he was assistant at the time AVB got sacked and technically he was babysitting, did very well and I'm sure has been richly rewarded. That Champs Lge title is on his CV and I'm sure he'll get another managers job, something that wasn't so sure when he was ousted from the Hawthorns.

      Morrison, Hernandez or Ramirez?
Honestly I'm not keen on Morrison with his upcoming fixtures especially compared to the other two.

Or is there another mid priced mid worth considering?

I chose Morrison, as WBA is in good form, and morrison playing in the hole.

in fact, I have dne pineear>morrison already.
also, their fixture is not that bad, just away games, but certainly not hard away games.

Look at Cazorla in the members area since Walcott came back :0 do not regret shipping him last week now!

With Chelski's problems and Eve's fixtures I see these as the clear top 5 mids for ther next 6:-

      Bale Silva Walcott Valencia Michu

I think this was always going to happen. RDM has actually done very well and I like the style that Chelsea play now but I'm convinced that Abramovich, like many of the players he decides he wants, wants Pep and was looking for any excuse to get rid of RDM. Shame, I thought RDM could win the league with them this year if given the time. This possibly means Chelsea won't be as competitive in the league now, losing a good manager and potentially reshuffling the team will take some time to begin to click.

Abramovich has too much money and time. This is all a game to him. He doesn't know what to do with all his money so he indulges in repeated chopping and changing, just so he has something to spend his obscene wealth on.
