Scout Report- Fernando Amorebieta

Martin Jol moved quickly into the transfer market last week, as the Fulham boss snapped up centre-half Fernando Amorebieta from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year deal. The 28-year-old moves to Craven Cottage on a free transfer and looks likely to partner Brede Hangeland in the heart of Jol’s back-four over the season ahead:

With midfielder Derek Boateng also arriving under freedom of contract, the Cottagers boss is wasting little time in addressing a poor end to the previous campaign which harvested a mere four points from the final eight Gameweeks. Speaking to the Fulham official website upon completion of the deal, Amorebieta revealed:

“I’m delighted to have signed a four-year deal with Fulham and I’m looking forward to competing in the Barclays Premier League next season. I’m impressed with the talent already at the Club and I look forward to meeting the players for pre-season training in July.”

The Statistics

Starting his player career at Athletic’s feeder club, Baskonia, in the 2003-04 campaign, Amorebieta then stepped up to the club’s reserved side, Bilbao Athletic, the following year before finally making his first-team debut in 2005-06. The 6 foot 4 centre-half spent the next eight seasons at the La Liga outfit, making a total of 195 appearances and producing three goals and three assists, though it is his disciplinary record which really catches the eye. A real no-nonsense approach at the back has seen Amorebieta register an astonishing 75 yellows and 11 red cards over his time in Spain’s top-flight, with plenty of suspensions picked up over his time in Bilbao.

On the international stage, he represented Spain Under 19s on four occasions and was also called up to the senior side by Vincente Del Bosque, though never made it past bench-warming duties. As a result, he was free to represent his native Venezuela and has turned out eight times, scoring one goal – the winner in a World Cup qualifier against Argentina last October.

The Prospects

Certainly, there’s no doubting Amorebieta’s talents. Comfortable in possession, his ability to pick out a pass from deep and prowess in the air have caught the eye of Arsenal and Liverpool in previous years but his temperament has proven enough of a deterrent for any would-be suitors.

Mainly left-footed, his arrival should see Hangeland switch to the right of the central defensive pairing and knock both Philippe Senderos and Aaron Hughes further down the pecking order. With Jol also snapping up Sascha Riether on a permanent deal after last term’s successful loan spell, it only leaves question marks over the first-choice left-back area, with John Arne-Riise and Kieran Richardson alternating over the last few games of 2012/13.

With eight clean sheets accrued last term, Jol’s backline are unlikely to either fall or rise in price across the Fantasy games, keeping their initial costs at the mid-price level. Despite a likely starting price of around the 5.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Amorebieta may find it difficult to attract early investors unless he can chip in with some attacking returns. Hangeland, for example, finished a full 60 points behind Mark Schwarzer last time out after failing to produce a goal or assist, while the Australian’s save points and spot-kick heroics earned him sixth spot in the FPL keeper standings, by comparison.

As Schwarzer hints at an exit from the Cottage, however, Jol looks to have further rebuilding on his summer agenda. Fantasy managers are likely to approach with plenty apprehension, then, with many more than happy to hold fire and assess just whether Amorebieta can rein in his reputation as a card magnet before contemplating any possible acquisition.

So they want people to shell out hundreds of pounds to be able to watch TV, play Fifa and Call of Duty.

I think this site has a bit of a problem in the off season. With no fantasy football what is there to talk about? Perhaps it wouldn't necessarily be a bad things to have off topic discussions. I think the occasional new signing will only promote limited discussion when it comes to fantasy football matters.

last summer was much better. there were lots of good discussions about fpl (strategies, improvements, etc), discussions about different teams players etc, discussion about transfers, discussions about the euros, and then super random discussions which were some of my favorites.

this year there's limited discussions period. all i have to say is thank god all the trivia and who am I things are done.

p.s. the transfer game will give us something to talk about 😉

I think there is a good period from say July where fantasy football comes alive again. Its like an epic lead in to the new season with the anticipation building. However the first half of the off season is a bit of a black hole I think.

I think Ryan's right. With a huge football void, there's little to talk about that hasn't been covered loads already.

      Depends on the "Off Topic".

Religion for an example that shouldn't be discussed here.

Of course regarding the rest. They all get a mention but the main purpose of the site is Fantasy Football. Seeing the main reason isn't available until the fixtures coming out in 3 weeks, the site has a lull. Your tournament & the Ashes will promote activity.

I'd say the next thing in line to fantasy football is the FFS community itself. Peoples experiences or whatever. Perhaps that could be a theme somehow.

For instance I've really enjoyed Jonty's pieces on members of the community it kind of gives us an insight into each other a little beyond fantasy football.

I enjoyed Evs interview & Matts written interview. Easier to talk about those with an article or scoutcast as reference. The Scouts need some time off too.

I would guess even FISO has gone quiet & they have a better forum in terms of topic selection. Time of the season & all that.

Not everyone is as open as Evs & Matt into giving details regarding their life or experiences.

I'd be interested to see what the scouts' views are on this.

Obviously there's no place for religious and political discussion on here (or anything that could cause offence for that matter), but I wonder if they prefer off-topic chat to no chat at all.

              That is quicker than google!

              18 x 2 = 36

              36 + 30 = 66

It's interesting though that people find the need to use technology instead of doing a simple sum, thinking about something or asking someone else. All this outsourcing of processing from the brain to computers will lead to the downfall of the human race!

This wasn't aimed at you in particular Berb, I'm very much guilty of it, especially using the calculator in my phone for simple arithmetic.

then sign up as a scout if that's what you fancy the most. owner has the most power though and can run things how he wants. meaning you could be an owner and also help with scouting responsibilities. likewise you could be a manager and help with scouting responsibilities. also in all honesty your team strategy and team discussions are more important than any scouting you may do (at least that's the way I see it but I might be wrong)

"Each club has an Owner, Chief Scout and Manager as a minimum. Each club may choose to have multiple Scouts (the maximum is up to the club to decide). The owner holds the budget and is the link between the club and FFS UEFA. The scouts quite literally scout for potential players. The manager builds the morale in the team and steps in for the owner when necessary. It is up to the club to decide each member’s roles."

so basically the owner is the guy in charge, they recruit others to their squad and manage the squad. the manager is their right hand man and assists them

Hmm I'm not too keen to hire other people on these boards, and I'm not too keen on building up moral because if anything my moral will need to be built up to stay interested. I'd say scouting would suit me best.

the moral thing is just what ENR wrote. the manager is mostly to just be the owner's right hand man.

but if a scout interests you the most then sign up as a scout!

cmon mate it'll take like 30 seconds of your time to fill out. and it ensures that you're on people's radars. and it makes it easier for them to contact you . you'll still probably get 20 offers to join on and this way you can get recruited by more than just owners on at the same time as you :).

He did well with Wales and Blackburn but that is going back 5 to 9 years. He hasn't followed that with anything worth mentioning and a good manager can't only be judged on his early successes. In recent years he has shown a lack of ability to turn draws into wins and not even managing to stay at a club for more than a year.

He also brought Bridge, Ben Haim and Jo to City.

    Who do you think is the best "sleeper" a la Tim Krul for each club;

    Arsenal: AOC
    Villa: Westwood
    Cardiff: Gunnarsson
    Chelsea: Oscar
    Crystal Palace: Speroni
    Everton: Jelavic
    Fulham: Hangeland
    Hull: Boyd
    Liverpool: Borini
    Man City: Silva
    Man United: Rooney
    Newcastle: Krul
    Norwich: Ruddy
    Southampton: Ramirez
    Stoke: Wilson
    Sunderland: Jonhson
    Swansea: Pablo
    Tottenham: Holtby
    West Brom: Jones
    West Ham: Carroll

    🙂

Is a sleeper not supposed to be a player that did well in the past FPL wise, but due to injuries, rotation etc he has gone of the boil?

If so, I can't see why Holtby should be there for Spurs. I would replace him with Adebayor.

Very True. Struggled with a couple of them. Holt and the Verminator's playing time is done though

A sleeper has to be proven, just had a bad season last season, so most of those don't apply.

People like Silva, Aguero and HBA etc are prime candidates.

not at all. I disagree with most of these

first off the promoted sides don't get sleepers

don't think you can classify oscar, a player new to the league, as a sleeper. chelsea is probably JT, cashley, or ba

      man city: silva or aguero
man united is certainly not rooney!!! their 3 wingers are the biggest sleepers in the epl imo
      stoke is shawx perhaps?
sunderland is mcclean. with an outside shout for sess or fletcher perhaps
      spurs is siggy or dempsey
      wba is odemwingie

          yeah you're probably right.

walters or crouch for stoke? or no sleeper at all for them?

I don't think Oscar will get one. Was he even expected to play much in his first season at the bridge with that quality Chelsea has in their midfield?
