Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

        No it wasn't.

I had Nolan the whole pre season. Then took him out for Jarvis for gw 1. Nolan scored 10pts week one. Then on WC in gw 3 I put Nolan in, then took him out 10min out prior to lock out. For Jarvis once again. Guess what...Jarvis got injured in warm up.

Look at my gw 3 trsfr history if you don't believe me.

That stupidity screams for some +1's!

Continuing GB's discussion on goal keeper rotation:

i have tried to predict the values of the first team keepers of the teams.
    Swansea(5.5) /Cardiff(4)
    United(6)/City(6.5)
    Liverpool(6)/Everton(5.5)
    Newcastle(4.5)/Sunderland(5.5)
    Arsenal(5.5)/Tottenham(5.5)
    West Brom(5)/Villa(4.5)
    Chelsea(6.5)/Fulham(5)
    Palace(4)/West Ham(5.5)
    Norwich(4.5)/Hull(4)
    Southampton(4.5)/Stoke(5.5)

if this is the likely case with the prices then i'll surely going to look into the fixtures of only three rotating pairs:

    Swansea(5.5) /Cardiff(4)
    Newcastle(4.5)/Sunderland(5.5)
    West Brom(5)/Villa(4.5)

Wouldn't surprise me if De Gea will be a 6.5 now he seems to have cemented his place.

I think Newcastle will be more solid next season so Krul at 4.5 could be a bit of a bargain.

Also, you really think Lloris will be only 5.5? I'd say 6. Let's wait and see.

I would think that DDG will be 6.5m, Cardiff keeper 4,5m, Vorm 5m, Mignolet 5m. However if Mignolet leaves after the prices Westwood would be great value, hopefully at 4m

I'd expect them to do what they did last season and make 4.5 the lowest price for a first choice keeper. And I'm hoping Vorm will drop to 5.0 after a fairly uninspiring set of points this time round.

For Ince if you want to stick with someone from England just wait for the lineups, same goes for Insigne. If in general and competition term, I'd probably have a look at Netherlands / Spain so maybe De Jong/Rodrigo up front and a midfielder with a suitable price.

Have you got WC? You want to be within 6 transfers of a semi squad.

So Insigne + Ince to Gabbi and a random punt from group A from seeing line ups

    u21 tactics

Summarising from a post yesterday that got a little washed under the HC arrival.

If you still have a WC you can select a team with; 3 Italian, 3 Spanish, 3 Dutch, 3 Norway, 3 Israel/England and thus be only 6 transfers from a semis team. Choosing a German or Russian over one Spanish or Dutch player still works.

    The advantages;

We can see the lineups for group A, so should be able to avoid non-starters due to rotation.
Group B is over so they only have pride left to play for.
Best time to play WC if you still have it as we have loads of transfers for all future rounds.

    Disadvantages

Could miss out on points from Group B.

Now which Spanish, Dutch (Russian, German) players would you pick if using this system?

For me it is, De Gea, Cara, John, Fer and Van Ginkel

Also you have to consider there is likely to be some players rested as nearly all the teams are guaranteed to be through, Im sure at least one big name won't play but who that will be I don't know

If I am correct you only have 6 transfers for the Semi's so in order to maximize your points as well as the fact that you can have more players from the same team wouldn't it be better do so for the Semi's?

On the other hand it is quite a sound tactic.

As anonymous says there is likely to be a lot of rested names, so seems sensible to load up on group A who we will know the line ups of.

True but I could do that even with 2 transfers, at least I doubt there would be that many rested, plus I could trade the players I have from group A to the ones who actually play.

My concern would be with the amount of rested if you go for Group A and B you might mess up your semi's by having people who were good for round three and may not play Semi's?

          Or am I just miscalculating?

it depends, Spain & Netherlands would likely want to win to probably avoid Italy in the semis. However there is a chance that Italy don't top the group, in that case they may rest players in order not to win

But you have to think three games in six days is a lot and some of these teams have players that I'm surprised haven't started a game yet already such as canales, destro, morata, vázquez etc

Yeh but you are using a transfer in and a transfer out if he doesnt play next game. Im taking a double punt on Morata in the hope hell start and score and then keep his place for the semi.

In my case I'll be probably wildcarding afterwards, so I guess I can afford to risk it, unless I decide to Wildcard this round, but I'm still not convinced on the usefullness of doing that for me.

    U21 Euros
For those that have not used their WC yet, when you planning on using it? I was thinking that this gw could be the best time to do so and take some gambles. It could be 'moving gameweek' to use a golfing term.
Since everyone gets 6 transfers before the semis by then many could have similar teams anyway.

In a day, the quality of the posts on here has improved. Quite drastically. Also, HC seems to have initiated thinking about the new FPL season. Quite a few posters woken up from snooze mode.

    I'm pleased.

Just continuing discussion, lets see the Higuains and Cavanis do join the premierleague, what kind of a strikeforce do you see yourself going ahead with at the start of the season? Also, will it include RVP?

You get RVP for consistency, but I can see Higuain providing that in an attacking Arsenal side for a cheaper price. I'd get both if Cavani goes to Chelsea and Higuain to Arsenal.

      It could go two ways.

      1) Wait for the new arrivals to settle in and go with what you know from last season (RvP, Sturridge, +1)

      2) Gamble on the new boys and rise or fall with them

Could be a season defining moment in GW1

Think I'll avoid RVP at first, 13.5/14 will be almost unaffordable. I've been thinking about Benteke, Sturridge and RVW. That should allow for a bit of spending in the midfield. Although maybe this year was a one off where strikers struggled a little.

With the imminent arrival of Iago Aspas at Anfield, Liverpool's forward/midfield areas are looking more and more risky.

Their formation usually offers an out an out striker position to two inside forwards and an attacking midfielder in behind.

    This leaves

Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, Downing, Sterling, Aspas, Suso, Henderson and even Assaidi all pushing for 4 places.

How much rotation do you think we'll see?

I don't think Rodgers is a rotation kind of person, but perhaps with the resources he would like to have this ability. I believe this is due to the fact that he had only Suarez for half of the season, and the fact Suarez misses the first 6 games. He doesn't want to run the squad thin in order to allow Liverpool to have a better squad foundation. However, doing it with rather unproven players is risky in itself, meaning I'm likely to stay away from Liverpool attack until a first team is established.

    Relating to the article:

West Ham were actually a decent team this season, however unlike other teams their points were largely focused on the forwards. While we tried to cram the highest scoring midfield possible + RvP + Suarez (until he turned cannibal), it wasn't viable to see the benefits of getting a midfielder from here. Even if you did, many turned to the Ns (Noble/Nolan) rather than Jarvis.

West Ham were used more of a defence backup, and keeper rotation, rather than a viable attacking points guarantee. I guess this highlights the need to identify what teams will be strong where ASAP, and keep this in mind when making transfers.

For a good while Nolan was in a lot of teams with his free scoring midfield play but then as the season went on and his point hauls decreased, West Hams options became limited, especially considering striker positions were so valuable.

I strongly stand by the opinion of Carroll & Nolan partnership = returns for both parties on a large scale with others in the West Ham system providing limited points.

As far as the article goes I dare say Jarvis's best football is behind him in his career earning his single English cap in the process.

I would put him in the 'purple patch' section. His going to go on a hot streak at some point much like Pilkington's home run last season.

Hi guys, can anyone tell me the difference between banned and suspended? I seem to remember seeing something along the lines of "two months of the ban are suspended" or something like that. Thanks!

'2 months of the ban are suspended' means that those 2 months will not be served unless they step out of line again, in which case it will then be applied.

Heard from reliable sources that Lazio striker Louis Saha will be reunited with former manager Harry Redknapp at QPR this summer.
