Manchester City continued to add to their first-team squad yesterday with the acquisition of Jesus Navas from Sevilla. The 27-year-old, who is currently in the US with the Spain squad ahead of this month’s Confederation Cup, is City’s second big-money signing in the past week after Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho arrived at the Etihad from Shakhtar Donetsk:

With Manuel Pellegrini expected to be announced as the new City manager by tomorrow, City’s pre-season plans are beginning to pick up pace following the dismissal of Roberto Mancini towards the end of the previous campaign. In an interview with the club’s official website, Navas – who is believed to have been cost City a fee in the region of £15m – went on to say:

“Manchester City is an exciting project and this is the right moment for me to take this step. I’m very happy with the opportunity and the decision. The Premier League is a competition where the football is very fast and will suit the way I play. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to a great club in England and I want to continue developing my game there. The club has put a lot of faith in me and I want to repay them out on the pitch.”

The History

A product of the Sevilla Youth Academy, Navas joined his hometown club at the age of 15 and made his first-team debut three years later at the end of the 2003-04 season. Firmly established as a regular by 2005-06, the winger has spent a total of 10 campaigns at the La Liga outfit, starting 30 or more times in all but one of the previous five seasons, when injury curtailed his game time over 2009-10.

Navas arrives at City on the back of a less-than-prolific campaign. The winger failed to find the net at all last season and supplied just six assists as Sevilla finished ninth in the table but there’s no doubt his creativity from the flank has been crucial to his side in recent years. In three of the last five seasons, he’s provided 13 or more assists and overall, has chipped in with 24 goals and 62 assists over 276 La Liga appearances.

In terms of silverware, Navas won six major trophies over his time with Sevilla – two UEFA Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, two Spanish Cups and a Spanish Super Cup. He’s also represented his country on 23 occasions, producing two goals and six assists, and has helped his nation to the 2010 World Cup, with the European Championship following a couple of years later.

The Prospects

Navas’ arrival certainly looks likely to afford City an extra dimension on the flanks. While the likes of David Silva, Samir Nasri and James Milner were utilised out wide by Roberto Mancini, none of the trio possess the speed and directness of the new boy – with Fernandinho also bringing a more dynamic edge to central midfield, the former champions seem set for an evolution under the incoming Pellegrini, with a much-needed injection of pace throughout the team.

Both Silva and Nasri may possess the trickery but both had a tendency to move into the middle when on the ball, with City all-too-often lacking any real width. Opponents were able to nullify the danger by packing the middle of the park in Mancini’s final season as his side became a little too predictable in possession – having scored 93 times in their title-winning 2011/12, City found the net just 66 times last term.

Navas’ introduction is clearly part of a tactical plan to utilise the width more efficiently, creating space and stretching opponents’ backlines, which, from a Fantasy perspective, will hopefully be good news after the disappointment of the previous campaign. In terms of Navas as an individual prospect, however, he’ll find it difficult to persuade us to initially invest, given that Silva, Yaya Toure and potentially Nasri will also be vying for our attentions in the City midfield.

Furthermore, his price isn’t likely to be cheap across the Fantasy games, with a cost of 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) anticipated. With Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all offering explosive potential in the premium bracket, it seems, in all likelihood, there will be better value to be found for our five man midfields as we look to balance budgets.

Ironically, the introduction of Navas and a more expansive style of play could, in turn, bring Sergio Aguero back onto our Fantasy radars. Having started 2012/13 costing 11.5 in FPL, the Argentine could conceivably drop to 10.5 or 11.0, potentially making him a viable option once again for those unwilling to fork out the expected 13.5 for Robin Van Persie. If he can overcome the serious bouts of homesickness that have blighted his international career, Navas has the potential to be a major player for City next term, though whether he can persuade Fantasy managers he’s worthy of a place looks another matter altogether.

United want 8.5mill for Nani. Where do you think he'll go though (assuming he does go). Would love to some him in another PL club(other than City/Chelsea.) 🙂

"The players that haven't played are eager and willing. We are one team and all the players are selected because of their quality. I've already decided on my team.
We are not a nursery where all the players can have a turn. We are a professional side who have 23 players in the squad and the best players will play."

I fear this. I keep telling myself that this surely won't be the case. Already he throws a ball and shouts "goal!" but I need a plan of action to ramp things up. Is he too young for Subbuteo? 😉

Obviously, the PC approach is to say "my son can be into what he wants - as long as he's happy". I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be disappointed if we don't get to go to the footy together though. Feel guilty about it.

Hehe...you know what, I've always struggled with that rivaly. I know that any Forest fan reading this will be furious at such a response but, truly, when I was a season ticket holder, I struggled to pipe up for "We hate Derby" chants. We always seemed to roll them out when the team was playing badly, when there was little to sing about. At those times, I was more concerned about my team to sing about Derby and a hatred that's forced upon me. Rivalries are a stange thing - the best ones are engrained and undeniable - I've never really felt that for Forest and Derby. Surely only me, though.

I'm pretty fiercely passionate in my hatred for Sunderland, but only really within the confines of the football stadium. I always want them to lose/be unsuccessful but not to the extent that they no longer become genuine rivals.

One week to fixtures and an avalanche of rotation spreadsheets. I'm going down a different route this year and avoiding rotation.
Obviously it's very useful for a pair of cheap GKs but how many seasons have you picked the perfect treble 4m def rotation or two pairs of 4.5 rotators only for it all to go tits up within the first six GWs due to an injury or, more likely, one of your cheapies ending up as a non-starter?

And when it does happen, who in their right mind actually swaps a cheap defender for another from the same team to maintain the carefully planned rotation?
For example, when Gorkks or Gunter emerged as pine gatherers who swapped them out for Pearce or Mariappa? Very few, that's who. Wilson or Demel were jumped on instead and BOOM the rotation is out the window already.

I've been feeling this way for a couple of seasons and I'm going to act on it this year.

Sure, rotation for 2 cheap GKs is still a perfectly legitimate tactic.

But whether I decide to get 3 (or 4) uber-cheap defenders at the start, I won't worry about whether they rotate well home and away. I'll be picking them purely on their strength of fixtures over, say, the first 10 GWs of the season.

I gave you the upvote BTW... 😉

To add to your post - no reason to not double up on cheap keeper + cheap def from the same team. I did it last year with turner+rudd and krul+simpson the year before. Especially if the def has a bit of a goal threat.

I'm thinking about chucking out the fixture book completely and try to avoid looking at it all preseason. How many times do the CS's come in unlikely matches? May as well be forced to play your ubers in some "tough" fixtures as they are equally likely to produce the points anyway.

People become obsessed with trying to pick a perfect team which, realistically isn't attainable because there are too many unknowns.

Yeah.. will of course depend on prices and fixtures but this is what I'm thinking at the moment.

By February, nobody was interested in rotation and as long as you have defenders who are playing, things will be fine. Demel keeps clean sheets away from home, Turner scores at Arsenal etc.. it's when your players aren't playing that you have a problem.

Interesting approach but its all about putting the odds in your favor, playing the numbers.

If there is a good rotation out there, i see no issue in going for it. If you are getting 3 uber defenders and now i'm thinking between Defender A and Defender B, i'll inevitably pick one that will rotate.

You're still playing the numbers by going for a strong set of fixtures for your cheapie (say, 6 nice fixtures in the first 10) instead of a home/ away rotation where some of the home matches are against a top-4 side, for instance.

        All hypothetical atm!

Yeah I was hoping that Scotland failed horrifically in qualifying, but the truth is you didnt unfortunately.

To be fair a large part of our fail is not down to the individual players but the management who decided we should go to the tournament without our best players. How can we possibly get better as a nation if our best players arent given every opportunity to compete at their own level rather than being out of depth at the top level straight away.

The first sentence just sounds childish and petty.

They don't need their strongest team to be able perform better than what this side have shown. The squad breezed through qualification looked like they couldn't even compete at this level.

The likes of Bardi, Bianchetti, Caldirola hardly jump out as being head and shoulders above Butland, Clyne, Caulker.

They had players that could have performed alot better and they never.

I know but put Jones, Welbeck et al. in the team and suddenly the pressure is off the rest of the players and Jones etc can cope with the pressure as they are sued to it by now.

They would have done better with the big players coming back but it also defeats the purpose of the tournament. You are supposed to have an accomplished side coming through the ranks.

Insigne has 1 cap for the seniors. Verratti has 3 and the (c) Caldirola has none.

If you bring back Jones, Walker, AOC, Welbeck it's not a true 21 side and you are masking your young side with a bunch of senior players.

England need to start again and produce players who are much more comfortable and competent on the ball throughout the side and across the board rather than relying on a few rare talents such as Rooney then Wilshere to come through and make it appear they are producing the best quality players.

This shows the injustice of seeding for football imo.

Seeding is based on past performance and is used to try and ensure the biggest teams contest tournaments. The only logical reason not to give every team an equal chance is tv revenue but surely sporting integrity should be more important than increasing the supply of money in the game thereby increasing the difference between the top and bottom teams?

What would you rather have at the start of a season:

    A) A 25 point head start
    B) An extra 2 mil in the bank (fantasy mil that is!) or
    C) An extra wildcard

Well let's say a good score is 2,200 points for the season. Divide that by your £100m budget and you get a target points per £m of 22.

Therefore an additional £2m should be earning you 44 points before you consider the points head start.

Having said that, I'd take the wildcard.

The glass is still half full for me , I think things will loosen out a little ,
Don't get me wrong the fundamental here has to be a soccer forum - that is the teams main goal and objective within the Scout,
and I get that but I just hope and this is my concern that Homecrowd doesn't dilute the character that posts his/hers opinions on here but as i said previous that is just my opinion.
I did note that Mark felt the site had gone off the rails so obviously this is the teams response to it - That is their job and they have very successfully created an unparalleled success for themselves in reaching their objectives so by that they are entitled to make changes as they see fit - they've earned that right and no one on here can argue that the community isn't consulted/involved in any changes. Hopefully it won't be a case of "music for the masses"

Poll on talksport yesterday who would you rather at Utd Rooney or Lewandowski?

Personally don't think we need Lewandowski as a Rooney replacement should he leave, would mean Van Persie dropping deeper and Kagawa moved out to the wing again. Rooney is still class but has attitude problems, why keep a player who has now twice asked for a transfer request? I vote for neither haha.

Surprised Arsenal or Chelsea aren't going for Lew, it seems Cavani is holding out for Madrid and with him being in his last year of his contract he can be bought for a cut price fee.

I think we were anticipating it around now, but it might not have been confirmed until after the fixtures were announced.

Looking at the dates they're very similar to last year:

"The 2013/14 Premier League season will kick off on Saturday 17 August 2013".
      http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/fans/faqs/when-does-2013-14-season-start.html

"The venue for the 2013 UEFA Super Cup has already been announced as Eden Stadium, Prague on 30 August 2013."

will jon walters be a regular under mark hughes do we think? if there was one player that seemed a manager pick in recent years it was walters with pulis, 90mins every week regardless of how he was playing it seemed. scores 2 OGs and misses a penalty v chelsea and not only stays on for the full match but starts the next game as usual. can see why he starts/started at stoke but his nailed-on-ness relative to his team mates seemed beyond a joke for a player of his quality.
the main player i was thinking about it affecting was charlie adam. a marginalised walters could open up penalties and a role in the hole for adam.

Nor me, so I'm guessing with his contract up, they thought it best to let him go at no cost, rather than risk further injuries.

Which teams do you guys think will exceed people's expectations this upcoming season? and which teams do you think will underachieve?

personally I think if Spurs sign one or two quality strikers and keep bale they could finish top 2 or 3 much to everyone's surprise.

I also think that Newcastle could be on for a good season. not as good as last year but definitely better than this year

on the flip side I can see Swansea underachieving after this year. Europa will have it's toll on them and I can't see Michu being nearly as prolific as he was this year

I also feel that Everton may under perform... dunno why but it's just a feeling

Norwich will overachieve, Southampton will underachieve imo.

any reason you think that or just a feeling?

I could see that though. I could also see West Brom underachieving, especially if they don't get Lukaku on loan again

Norwich were really looking good offensively and defensively toward the end, and RVW could be the final piece. Southampton rely on an aging Lambert and I feel despite having a strong team may get overtaken by clubs improving this summer. Just a hunch.

Blimey...I'd go the other way round on that. Then again, my pre-season predictions are never great: I tipped Swansea for bottom three.

Villa ought to do better this time out. They didn't seem to deserve the hammerings they got

Teams to do better in the upcoming season:

      Newcastle
      Liverpool
      Villa
      Sunderland

      Teams to do worse:

      Everton
      Stoke
Arsenal (Not gonna finish in the top 4, you heard it here first 😉 )
      Norwich
      WBA

what makes you think Norwich will do worse this year?

also I think Arsenal will play better this year but finish outside the top 4 as I can see the top 6 all being very close and I reckon the gunners will just miss out by a couple points

Norwich is just a gut feeling, with Newcastle, Sunderland and Villa on the up in my opinion, I feel Norwich, and probably Southampton, will be sacrificed as a result, although Soton to a lower extent as they were 14th.

Arsenal are always associated with the CL, so outside the top 4 is underachieving. I agree though, it won't be because they're weaker, but because their opposition is stronger.
