Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matthew Lowton

Snapped up from Sheffield United last summer, Matthew Lowton fitted the bill as part of Paul Lambert’s restructuring program at Aston Villa. Young, ambitious but with plenty yet to prove at the top level, the right-back arrived from Bramall Lane for a fee of around £3m and was immediately installed as a key component in Lambert’s first XI.

As the season unfolded, the defensive problems that plagued Lambert at Norwich continued to blight Villa’s backline. An attack-minded philosophy looked naïve at times as the midlands outfit found themselves on the wrong end of some serious goings-over – shipping five to City, four at home to Spurs and eight against Chelsea, Villa leaked 69 goals over the course of the campaign and managed five clean sheets all season, conceding in every match from Gameweek 17 onwards.

Key Factors

  • Few defenders, if any, afford the same consistency of starts as the Villa right-back. Lowton missed just one match all season – the Gameweek 37 loss at Chelsea – after being subbed off early in the previous league fixture and was fourth overall defender in terms of minutes played. Lambert’s faith in the former Blades man is unquestioned – if he’s fit, he should start every match for Villa.

  • After altering formation on a number of occasions last term, Lambert finally seems to have struck upon a 4-3-3 as his preferred option. As the Villa boss tinkered with his tactics in order to get the best out of his charges, he trialled three, four and five-man backlines with varying degrees of success – as he steels himself for a second season in charge, a greater degree of consistency looks key to Villa’s improvement under the Scot.

  • Villa’s form across the final few months of 2012/13 affords reason for optimism. The midlands side registered five wins and a couple of draws in their last 10 games, tasting defeat only to United, Chelsea and Liverpool and scoring 21 goals over that period – given that they had won five of their opening 28 matches, scoring 26 times, their improvement is marked.

  • Lowton also stepped as the season went on – he managed a single goal in the first 24 Gameweeks but followed that up with a goal and four assists in his final 13 appearances, with his penchant for a spectacular strike from distance always a threat. A 4-3-3 formation looks tailor-made for his talents – with a couple of defensive midfielder sitting deep, he should be afforded plenty licence to bomb forward and supply width from deep.

  • Let’s face it – Villa’s defence can barely get any worse. From a Fantasy perspective, then, a price rise for Lowton looks unlikely across the games – if he continues at last term’s initial 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has the potential to be a real bargain, providing Lambert can instill a little extra resilience at the back next time round.

Yes, I have the joy of looking forward to such treats as Yeovil and Doncaster Rovers away and Barnsley at home on this Wednesday morning!

Still looking forward to the list coming out, though, and I hope we get drawn away in week one. Might go to Yeovil if we get drawn there on opening day as its just up the road from me here in Bristol.

Morning all... 22nd in U21 game and tempted to go all Italian, but as others between me and the leader will surely do the same, I might as well go with Spain and just aim for the highest I can right? 😕

Tough call WR. I suppose the way you think will give most points rather than playing the other players.
But what do I know? Not even playing it myself. Good luck though.

how far are you back WR?

couple questions for you: can you afford 11 Spain or 11 Italy players? and do you see another Spain cs?

just remember that depending on how far back you are, getting the right captain could turn the tides

I'm too far behind mate, 30pts behind leader.. Yes it's possible I could catch him but unlikely, no way I can leapfrog everyone though. You are only allowed 9 players from one team so I'm going with 8 Spain + Insigne, Bianchetti and Florenzi

As almost everyone will going with the Bales and Rvps, I think it will be of utmost importance who our cheaper players are.
Specially since there are a lot of players to choose from, they will be our real differentials.

Three cheap defenders, 1 cheap mid and a cheap striker to rotate with the mid. Is my outline plan.

There was an interesting rumour put out by the sun newspaper the other day about United going for either Ronaldo or Bale. As a United fan it got me thinking. Perhaps Bale would be a better investment than Ronaldo. His wages are much more affordable, and he is younger, so could be sold on after a few seasons for a profit.

So who is a better investment, Bale or Ronaldo?

Bale would definitely be the better investment. Last season he showed that he can step up a gear or two as well.
However,I'm not too sure if he can consistently get close to 30 goals in the epl.
That is where CR7 comes in. Atleast 30 goals a season guaranteed!

Mind you, being an utd fan, I really do not mind either player at this moment.

If I was United, I go for Bale. Just to repeat what I've bored everyone to death with before, I think Bale in a swap and cash deal for Rooney and maybe a mid.

I think it works for Utd for their weak midfield and Spurs who desperately need a good striker.
The obvious stumbling block would be Rooney's wages.

impossible to estimate Ronaldos true cost in wages, He, along with Messi, Neymar ? (Beckham of old) belong to a very elite band of players who have the ability to generate economic activity way beyond the simple notion of their wages..

Yeah definitely...but that revenue wouldn't only depend upon the obvious shirt sales, as is often quoted, but also how much the media and advertising industries like him as well. Ronaldo has the track record.

Do you think Bale could eventually match or overtake Ronaldo's track record in that area? If he players for United it will improve his media and advertising potential. Something that he needs for his own career perhaps. It could be mutually benificial for both parties.

My gut feeling would be no. He'll do well, very well, but Ronaldo has the looks of an Adonis...and Beckham before him just loved the camera and just got better and better at playing the media game. Bale will get more than his fair share of the pie but i really couldn't see him in the same bracket. Just my gut feeling.

But it's not just Bale...It's United as well...The sums are simple...How much advertising revenue/sponsorship could United expect to generate with Ronaldo, for any one given contract, as oppose to a United team without him....and in terms of those revenue streams Real Madrid actually got a bargain at 80 mill for Ronaldo...maybe..

If that were to happen then RVP be much easier to own , he much more consistant, more reliable capt pick , Bale much higher risk/ reward

Morning Lad, Great the see the Azzurri in the U21 final 🙂 Unfortunately that Spanish team looks full of attacking quality and defensive solidarity - they haven't even conceded one goal!! The future looks bright for Spanish football with young talents such as Isco and Thiago.

Yea, his goal yesterday was world class..would love to see him in the prem but starting every week, not waisting away on City's bench!

I hope Italy can get the win, if any team could pull it off it would be them. Surprised at the wealth of attacking talent Italy have in there squad, not just defensively which you associate with them.

Who do you think will be the top 3 point scorers in each position this season?

      Keepers - Cech, DDG, Hart

      Defenders - Vertonghen, Ivanovic, Baines

      Midfielders - Bale, Gerrard, Hazard

Strikers - RVP, Sturridge (Assuming Suarez goes), Aguero

Played the most minutes in the last 7 seasons yet only got his 3rd highest score. 216 is his highest score & that would just have got him 2nd over super rotated Mata.

he will 100% be a Striker in FPL. just look at how everyone else classifies him:

who do people call the two best forwards in the world? Messi + Ronaldo
FIFA team of the year or whatever that's called, strikers: Messi + Ronaldo + Falcao
CL fantasy game: classified as a striker

              pretty straightforward to me

keepers: all look good though i could see Mig up there if he's at Pool
Defenders: lack of CS for spurs makes me question vertonghen. i would think perhaps zaba if he can nail down the rb spot
        mids: bale hazard coutinho/silva/dempsey/walcott
strikers: from what we know now i'd go rvp suarez aguero
however depending on transfers and other factors I could see it being 3 out of rvp aguero higuain lukaku and whatever striker spurs sign

How many £7m strikers are capable of well over 200 points? Not to mention he is an easy captain option.

With a full pre-season, if he stays fit he'll be banging the goals in, and should be quite cheap after last season.

Injury prone players tend to keep being injured , even if they are not their managers take good care of them , and with all the champ league games he will be far from a certain starter for the easier league games

Brazil have gone over 50 competitive games on home turf without defeat. I watched the highlights last night and I have to say with the exception of a few quality players they are not a 'world class' Brazil team by far. The likes of Thiago Silva, Lucas Moura and Naymar (who I believe is overrated) would be the exceptions but I would bet on that home record falling in next summers WC. All the expectation will be on Brazil being the home nation and there fans expect them to win the World Cup every tournament anyway, so that added pressure could show on the pitch. I can see Argentina grabbing a famous victory against the old enemy at the Maracanã one hot summers evening.

Lucas Moura was quality when he came on yesterday but I think it's an attitude thing that's keeping him out, bit of a primadonna.

Oscar would be an advanced playmaker and Coutinho a winger.

He played towards the right side in an advanced role and saw a lot of the ball and showed a lot of quality.

I would play Coutinho over Hulk for the simple fact that I think he's massively overrated. Then again there is a lot of competition for those places yes.

agreed. if Argentina do well I think it'll be because they outscore their opposition not because they stop the other team from scoring. poor defense but tons of offensive firepower in Messi, Aguero, Higuain, Lavezzi, Di Maria, and i'm sure there's someone else i'm missing....

They can only field so many of them at once though and it'll be interesting to see who they try to play together. They don't have anybody to pull the strings in the midfield anymore like Cambiasso did in his prime and Veron did. Last couple of times I've seen the Argies they've found it hard to keep enough possession to actually get it up to their best players in good positions.

good point. haven't seen Pastore play but could he possibly fill that role?

haven't seen them play in a while, any idea what their formation has been? cuz I could see aguero playing as the striker and messi playing a role in the hole to get on the ball more and link up play. as that's what he does most of the time anyways and we all know he loves to get in between the lines

Pastore could do the trick yea but I've not seen a lot of him. Stupid french league lol.

It's looked like this but it lacks balance. Messi and Di Maria can't and wont defend which leads to a gap between midfield, attack and defence. great individual players doesn't necessarily make a good team. They need more midfield quality imo.

I feel like a 4231 would suit them better perhaps with mascherano + gago/costa at cdm. then messi central and di maria and lavezzi on the wings and only one of aguero/higuain at a time at the striker role

I think that they should play a 4 2 3 1 too but rather than Lavezzi and Di Maria wide I think that they should play Mess as a cental striker with Aguero and Tevez either side. as supporting strikers.

yeah 4231 gives them two defensive mids to protect the backline which will improve their defense.

how would that work then? I can't envision it.... and wouldn't that be too narrow?

also the thing is messi isn't your traditional striker. if you did that I feel like messi and tevez either side of aguero would work better.

why don't you think lavezzi and di maria out wide though?

They would constantly rotate though I reckon. I understand what you mean about narrow but I don't particularly rate their wide players.

fair enough. so 4231 how would the 31 look like then?

you've gotta have width though or you'll struggle and I don't think having the fullbacks provide it will suffice.

why don't you rate di maria or lavezzi?

Brazil are good but not great. I can see Argentina doing better than them. and Spain and Germany have gotta be the favorites imo. both been extremely successful over the last few years, both have very strong teams, and both benefit from good team chemistry as most of their players playing in a league in their country and concentrated mainly in two club teams in that league.

I can see Uruguay also doing well (though maybe not as well as the last WC).

and I have to say, Belgium are my dark horses of the tournament. I see them at least making the Quarters if not farther

The only thing that would stop them would be a horrible group. Felt so bad for the Ivory Coast a few years ago when they were brilliant but sat in a group with Holland and Portugal.

fair enough. I'm still shocked how they didn't qualify for the Euros!

I don't think they'll go all the way but I think they'll make it to the quarters if not the semis. and I think a lot of that is down to team chemistry as well as having several younger players. but I think they should generally do fine cuz a lot of their key players have already performed on the big stage at a club level.

Brazil...or rather the Brazilian people...deserve a home soil world cup win for all the great footy they have played over the years....Of all the teams that have won the World cup only Brazil and Spain have failed to do so on home soil...with Brazil being runners up the last time they hosted it...That needs putting right.

They are attempting to brainwash people into paying for things that they have no need for whatsoever.

        It is theft.

They should be illegal, but then people would buy less crap, which would mean less tax for the government to waste on G8 meetings that could be done for free over Skype!!!

After Mkhitaryan was discussed a bit last night, could we see Liverpool playing a 4-2-3-1 with him in the hole if he joins? Or will it just be a free flowing 4-3-3?

Well we can only afford him if we sell Suarez and if we do that we'll only have Sturridge as an out and out strikers and therefore I could see a 4231 again.

It would suit Aspas though on the right, it would allow him more space to work in which is suited to his style of play. Sturridge could be a great striker though, Liverpool may be better off without Suarez.
