Pre-Season

Pre Season Section Now Live

With July now upon us, the Pre-Season section of the site is up and running once again as we edge towards the first batch of friendlies. We’ve collated the current summer schedule for all 20 Premier League clubs and also added links to every article referencing the upcoming season, from Moving Targets to Sleepers, Great Expectations to Scout Reports to Fixture Analysis pieces, in addition to a look back at the three promoted sides displays in the previous campaign.

We’ll be updating the Pre-Season section on a daily basis, adding every article upon publication. Each team also has their own “Scout Notes” and “Form Players” sections – we’ll be scouring the friendlies and, as well as rolling out plenty of Scout Scribbles articles to cover the games, will be using this as a handy one-stop-shop for your guide ahead of next month’s kick-off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What price do we think Aguero will start at... Stay the same at 11.5? Is a slight drop to 11.0 likely?

Tricky one. Depends whether City sign another striker. If not, I'd guess 11.0

Not too sure about Muniesa's prospects. Don't reckon he's automatically first choice.

Nice front 7, but lacking firepower in your Arsenal.

Keep an eye on him in pre-season. I'm not sure he's a better defender than Shawcross but he's a better footballer with him being a La Masia graduate who can carry the ball out of defence. That's what Hughes will want from his centre-back. Shawcross just likes to boot it up. If it wasn't for him, we'd play better football.

I think Gerrard is worth the extra 0.3m over Coutinho given 100% nailed on and his passing and tackling bonuses. Could then downgrade Kagawa to someone who is more likely to start.

Here's a viz people might find interesting which shows how each player accumulated their FPL points for each gameweek throughout last season:

    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPL2012-13Cumulativestats/Sheet1

Much like the last viz I uploaded, it looks like a kid's drawing at first glance, but there are checkboxes to filter it down by team and/or position and/or individual player.

Hover over any of the data points and you will get the full player history for that week in a tooltip.

I haven't looked at it in any great detail yet. There are so many possible combinations of player data you could filter on that I'm hoping the community here might be able to come up with some insights rather than me just trawling through it on my own!

A couple of vaguely interesting things I looked at:

            - Gerrard's scoring rate noticeably kinks upwards after Lucas returns from injury (although we kind of knew this anyway)
            - The extent to which some players (RVP and Lambert, for example) utterly dominated the point scoring for their clubs. Seeing this on a graph really drives the point home.
            - Filtering on Rooney and RVP only, it's a wonder there was any discussion on here about which was the better option.

That's a great table, how difficult would it be to produce one every week during the season?
The main point that the mass of colour says to me is that RVP and Bale are essential players in any squad. Also looking at the first half of the fixtures next season this reinforces that one of them will be my captain every week barring transfers/injuries etc.

I don't really get the logic in them not being worth it... They still get clean sheet points, points for goals and assists as well as potential points for passes and tackles...

Why are they any less worth it than in FPL?

They're quite expensive compared to FPL(Decent ones take up £5m of a £75m budget), so are even less worth it than in FPL, which you may get some value out of.

I don't see the point facing 3 MLS sides among 5 matches in pre-season (Stoke).

They are in the middle of their season, and will probably field second-string sides. After all their first-string sides aren't tha strong at all.

Not the best way to test your team before the PL.

Sorry or the long post and if you don’t like stats based posts and random hypothesis then this post is TLDR 🙂

    Early WC analysis further comment:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/18/sleeper-charlie-adam/?hc_page=12&hc_refresh=469#hc_comment_4983441

Following the excellent analysis by Mathmo of the early wildcard (wc) mavericks out there and the results that came with I had some thoughts on why people who played their wc’s early did so well.

To summarize (probably over simplify) his findings 95% of people in the top 1k played their wc’s in the first 5 gw’s last season.

This dropped to 85% for between 1k and 2k and dropped again to no lower than 60% for between 8k and 100k.

In my opinion this game we love is an incredibly dynamic game and this is where our addiction stems from so analysis one season like this can be quite dangerous to use as a base line for your strategy going forward. One of the main reasons for the early wc last season was the early dbl gw for Chelsea and a couple of teams missing a gw around gw3 or gw4 (not sure which). Obviously if you have not planned your transfer around this then the obvious thing was to wc. This gave you the added benefit that early wc always gives in being able to bring in the bandwagons of which Michu and Fellaini were key to overall scores last season.

I would hypothesise that playing while the wc early was part of the reason for the success these guys in the top 1k had it was not THE reason they finished in the top 1k as a lot more than 950 managers (60,000 in the top 100k alone) played their wc early last year and didn’t finish in the top 1k. I’m not sure what the odds are but 950 out of 60,000 does seem a lot like luck and that is not including those who played it early and finished outside the top 100k.

The guys who finished in the top 1k obviously gambled early on and won big but does that mean that you have to play the wc early or that to finish in the top 1k you need to be a dynamic player who changes their tactics based on what happens each season or that you need to roll the dice and get lucky in any given season to get into the top 1k and playing FPL by the numbers (i.e. playing it safe) means you only have a very small chance of cracking the top 1k?

One last thing I would like to point out which is different this season than last is that we have a world cup. This means this years season will be 11 days (I think) shorter than last seasons which will likely lead to huge double gw’s (possibly even a treble gw) come the season run in when wc’s could be huge value to those brave/lucky enough to hold onto them.

So who is playing their wc early? 😀

Haven't read this one but someone else posted a long one a while back convincing us using starts that using a WC early is more common as you look further up the rankings. With the top 1K having a huge margin of players WC'ing early.

haha, seriously I don't know the answer Parm but I won't be unless I have a dreadful start as I think it could be a huge benefit (although I squandered mine around gw12/gw14 last season).

The temptation to use it is huge every gw especially when you have a bad gw and a few players hit form together so it will take huge discipline to keep it. If you are not going to be able to keep it until the end or for weather postponements etc then you might as well play it early and increase value and get the early bargains in your team I guess.

Really Demi? Were they much out?

In any case the post should stand alone with deliberating the merits of early wc and the possibility of more dbl's or a treble gw due to this years truncated season.

A lot of comments on that thread seemed to either feel vindicated about playing the wc early each season or were seriously thinking about it as the better strategy due to the stats mentioned and I just didn't think they were getting the full picture hence this post (I've just been too busy until now to sit down and write it 🙁 )

I think someone(cully) found out that it was actually 50% of top 1k players using the WC early. The 90% stat was what made his post what it was. Doesn't look that compelling an argument now.

But there still might be a good reason for playing it early. I'm not siding either way.

Cheers MCN, pity I didn't have the correct stats to work off but my hypothesis was that playing the wc is a bit of an all in gamble type strategy still stands I guess.

With the truncated season this year I think saving the wc for the last 8 gw's or so could lead to a huge bonanza and I think that will be what I will try and do (subject to a good start).

I guess the point I was trying to make was although he won it he was one of only 60,000 or so in the top 100k that played their wc early and maybe it is a high risk strategy i.e. while all in on a pair of 2,2, in texas holdem against a whole table might sometimes come off it would not be recognised as the best strategy.

Kelvin (who came 2nd last season) didn't play his main WC till GW24, but still scored 118 in GW1 and was ahead of Matt (the eventual winner) most of the way. It wasn't his early WC that won it for Matt, it was his consistent good play and strong finish, making some better or luckier decisions compared with his rivals in the later part of the season.
Most champions in recent years have used their main WC in a DGW for multiple teams, but perhaps starting with a DGW in GW1 made 2012-13 a bit different.

      1. Correlation is not causation.

100% of Premier League footballers don't have a day job. Therefore quitting your job will make you better at football.

      2. The future is different from the past.

This is vital to all this looking over the shoulder analysis. The top teams might have wildcarded early, or had a cheap defence, or taken no hits, or captained Walcott in GW20. That does not mean that captaining Walcott in GW20 is the secret to success next season.

Thats a pretty good reason to wc IF you don't have the right team. If it's a knee jerk because hazard scored a hattrick and you want him in your team then it's just a kneejerk the same as at any time in the season.

The thing I try to do is not look at overall rank until you hit gw10 as you should know by then how your players are performing (obviously you will have 10 transfers by then so you could have a whole new team) and if things are not working by then you could try and change tactics a little.

If you end up with a team where 3 or 4 of them are dropped and one or two are playing wrong positions etc then it might be wise to wc but I see a lot of guys in my mini leagues each wc just because they want the latest flash in the pan player in their team.

If its someone like hazard who is scoring well then i wouldn't bother trying to get him in but if you had say michu, fellaini, a couple of 4m defenders and a 4m gk at a top team as well as a great value mid at a top team that you hadn't spotted pre-season start then I would probably wc as these kind of players will be in your team for the whole season so you could be at a serious competitive dis-advantage if you have to pay a lot more for them. Other than such a scenario (which is highly unlikely) I will be trying my damndest to hold it for the run in this year.

    Prior to last season:

Benefit of early WC - get on early bandwagons when the volume of transfers is higher than at any other time -> Improve TV faster than you can at any other time -> Access to better players and more points over the rest of the season.

Benefit of late WC - can get rid of deadwood and also position for any DGWs that come up.

Now that we have the DGW1 the early WC also brings with it some of the benefits of a later WC. It's a double whammy. It makes sense to me. Particularly now we have the Jan WC too so if injuries do become a problem if you can muddle through to Jan you can reap the benefit of the higher TV.

Yep, that's not a bad idea. I tried to play it cute last year and not burn points and keep the WC. Whilst I made great use of the WC when I eventually played it (got me from 9000 to 2000 when i played it in GW34) my TV was awful all year.

I might do as you suggest, target the DGW1 and then spend to get rid of those DGWers in favour of the early bandwagoners.

I think the mistake made most often is to use it for one particular week, i.e. "I'm saving it for a DGW at the end of the season"...

Sure, they'll probably have a great score that week, but there will probably have been times earlier in the season where they've either spent points to restructure their squad, or sat on a weak squad to avoid using their wildcard.

Personally, I want to be using ymy WC for long-term gain, and this can be done at any point of the season: early on when the "must-haves" make themselves known, half way through the season when you're hit with injuries or suspensions, or late on to set yourself up for a final surge over the last few gameweeks.

Since FPL gave everyone a second wildcard I think it has taken away a lot of the importance of the first one and changed what it should be used for. I find that by the time everyone uses their Jan wildcard everyone wants the same players. Last season it was all about fitting in as many of RVP, Suarez, Bale, Mata, Walcott, Michu and Fellaini as possible. The more of them you could get in the better your ranking would be come week 38 (oversimplified but true). I was able to get ahead of my rivals because I could fit them all into my team due to my high team value. The only reason I have this value is wildcarding within the first 5 weeks and getting all the 'popular' players. Value is incredibly important for the first half of the season down to being irrelevant towards the end. Trying to Jan wildcard a team with 102m compared to 110m is incredibly difficult and chances are you'll just fall further behind. Double gameweeks can be planned for and taking a hit, for say Cazorla, with a dgw is normally still profitable overall and keeps you almost level on weekly points with anyone who saved their wildcard and used it to get a few players in.
By week 4 some of the bargains of the season have already started to shine, you can never pick all of these up early with one transfer a week.
To summarise my rambling post...The first wildcard should be used early to pick up unexpectedly good players and rocket team value in preperation for the Jan wildcard when you can get yourself a better team than your rivals who will be trying to get in very similar players.

        Don't agree at all.

There is nothing stopping you building up a big tv without using the wc and in any case having the most expensive team doesn't always correlate to the most points. Often the bargains don't surface until gw 5 - gw 10 when you can see new managers and players have settled in and what formation the are sticking on. If you get players in based on first gw or two (wbrom def last year) then you could be stung once their form disappears.

If you get a run of gw's where you have dbl's confirmed coming up to the end of the season then having a wc to set your team up could be hugely beneficial.

The fact that you get to set your team up from gw1 should mean you don't need to wc early unless you pick a disaster of a gw1 team and also the point made above re having a dbl gw early on meaning you get the benefit of dbl gw and early price rises is wrong imo as the dbl gw's later in the year will involve a lot more than two teams and they usually the involve the top teams who have progressed farther in the cups.

But you should have cover from most of the top teams already and you have a few weeks to set your team up for a double gameweek. I can see your argument for saving it and it's good that the wildcard adds another facet to managing a team. Being an accountant I probably think in terms of value more than I should but i find that it's an important part of my tactics and value tends to snowball very quickly in the first few weeks. Last season I wildcarded in about week 3 to get Michu, Fellaini, RVP amongst others. the impact on my season of having these season keepers from early was huge. If I'd been good enough to get them from week 1 then maybe things would be different. The first half of the season (for me) is a stock market where you constantly try to upgrade players and the wildcard helps do this.

I used to think this was a good strategy but now I think you have to keep your eye on the ball (the ball being points not cash).

I don't like to ask rank etc but how is your strategy panning out for you? The proof is in the pudding I guess

Hello fantasistas. I'm a Stoke fan and new to this site, determined to break top 100,000. My first post is not a RMT as such but just a team of potentially good value new signings that I'm debating about having in my team(let me know what you think):

Skelenburg, Mannone, (Mignolet if less than 6)
Okore, Reither, Pieters, Lovren, Rat (El Mo if defender)
Shelvey/DeGuzman, Tonev, Derek Boateng, Kemen (Navas if less than 11)
Carroll, Cornelius, Aspas/Alberto (Anelka if less than 7)

Of those, only Rat, Carroll and Cornelius are of any interest to me. Navas will definitely be less than 11, but I won't be touching him anyway.

Hi. Maybe limit the punts to 1 or 2. For every Michu or Petric, there will be many fails. Recon Carroll and maybe one of the gk/def could get a look in for me. Midfielders don't scream fpl material.

Give Needlvor a kick if you see him at a game,Ta!

I think Cornelius could be this season's Michu and Carroll will be back to his best. There's my two. That's my thinking regarding mids because they look defensive minded. Can't see Shelvey or De Guzman being permanent starters. It was hard to put 5 new signings in midfield.

Mate, they don't like us. We don't care.

However, I think the media and everyone else will start to enjoy our football under Hughes. This time, he has a proper squad of players to work with and no mercenaries. Still, I'm reserving judgement until after 6 games at least.

      Yup.

Luna might be a good budget defender.
Fernandinho has potential, especially in the stats-heavy games.
Stephen Dobbie could be excellent value.
      Don't forget Van Wolfswinkel!

I looked at Luna but went for Okore because he was the more expensive one, so could be a guaranteed starter.
He plays too deep and will be rotated, so I doubt he's much value. just a replacement for Barry. Yaya is a better option.
Yeah and I don't know about the other one. Could be worth a punt.

      Welcome to the site, man.

The general feeling here is that while Navas is a good player and a good acquisition for City, his stats from La Liga suggest that he won't be very good for fantasy. That might change in a new team in a new league, but I'd hold off and monitor his performance.

I'll be looking very closely at Cornelius after Cardiff's horrible early fixtures. Gameweek 5 onwards looks better for them.

Carroll stands a very good chance of being an excellent fantasy asset. I may well have him.

        Cheers.

I hope so. Surely playing in a team that dominate possession means more threatening dribbles down the touchline for Navas. High hopes for him.

I advise you to get Carroll in before he becomes a bandwagon.

All three of these strikers have either underperformed, not been trusted, and generally not been good enough to win you anything.

They need to do what United did last year when buying RVP. Guarantee goals.

At the moment their strikers are a problem wich needs fixing.

Spot on. That's exactly what they need. A fearsome European striker capable of getting you goals. It's criminal to have Hazard/Oscar/Mata behind a striker who doesn't hit 20+ goals a season in the PL.

I may have been droll in making my point (thanks Adam West) but it was a relevant to query why Chelski need a MF over a striker.

Malouda Benayoun Romeu and Marin played next to no matches last season, so see no reason why Chelski need to replace fodder they either placed in the reserves or sent out on loan.

Thanks guys. Are there any posters I need to be wary of? 🙂 And what do the numbers next to comments signify?

The numbers are up/down votes. Patrick's Demel comment was downvoted by a couple of people because it was unhelpful. The green and grey arrows under a poster's grav are the buttons you use to do that. As a rule, don't use them to agree or disagree with someone, but to mark a comment as something that others should read. Maybe you disagree but enjoy the ensuing discussion and think it's interesting.

I won't remark on individual posters; you'll figure that out soon enough 😉

Actually, one thing to be genuinely wary of on here is the tendency for fads and trends to set in as a sort of mob mentality. Some set of players/mentality can be proclaimed to be the gospel by a large group of people on here only for the whole trend to change the following week. The vast majority of advice is good, just be wary of these trends that develop.

This last piece made a massive difference last season for me. Previously I would pick the occasional flamboyant captain on a hunch...massive mistake over a 38 game season. Pick RvP, Bale, Suarez etc.

Unless you have good hunches, in which case let us know 😉

    Wigan sign Marc-Antoine Fortune

Fortune, Rosenberg and Lukaku all gone, Odem burnt his bridges

Leaves Long and Anelka as WBA's main strikers.

Thinking about it, given the massive pressure that is on SAF's successor, if United would have been wiser employing a fall guy first. A Benitez character of sort to soak up the punches that will inevitably come now that the reign is over, and quality will most likely suffer.

And then someone like Moyes would come in and sort of get it back on track.
