Moving Target

Moving Target – Jonjo Shelvey

Michael Laudrup’s summer spending spree continued to pick up pace earlier this week with the acquisition of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool for a fee around £5m. The 21-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the fifth player to be snapped up by the Swansea boss over the last few weeks, following the arrival of Jordi Amat, Jose Canas and Alejandro Pozuelo, in addition to Jonathan de Guzman’s return on a further season-long loan deal:

Speaking to the Swans official website upon completion of the deal, Shelvey admitted the club’s style of play, allied with the opportunity of increased game time, were fundamental to his decision to move to the Welsh outfit:

“Leaving a club like Liverpool is a very hard decision to make, but coming to Swansea, who play similar football which Brendan (Rodgers) and managers before him installed here, is an attraction. Brendan said he wouldn’t let me go to a club that wasn’t right for me. He said Swansea are perfect for me with the way I play. Rather than sit on the bench every week at Liverpool, I need to come and play football and get myself to the status that I once had. Moving here will help me in terms of the way the manager wants to play. Obviously having worked under Brendan that will stand me in good stead.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal and West Ham youth academies, Shelvey was picked up by Charlton as a youngster back in 2007. Having scored 14 times in 23 appearances for the Under 18s in 2007/08, he was promoted to the senior side the following year and, after becoming the club’s youngest ever first-team player, went on to produce seven goals and five assists from 42 games in the Championship.

Signed by Liverpool in May 2010, Shelvey managed just a single assist from 15 appearances in his debut campaign on Merseyside. Farmed out to Championship side Blackpool the following year, the midfielder made an immediate impact, producing six goals and three assists in just 10 matches before he was recalled to Merseyside as a result of injuries to the likes of Lucas and Steven Gerrard. Back at Anfield, he again failed to produce the goods – notching just once in 13 matches over the remainder of the season.

In Brendan Rodgers’ first term in charge, Shelvey made nine starts and 10 appearances off the bench but was unable to make any real impression, mustering a single strike in the league last time round. Ironically, he was far more prolific in the Europa League for the Reds last season, notching four times in nine matches. On the international stage, Shelvey has represented England at every level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 10 times in 29 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side once, climbing off the bench to feature against San Marino in October last year.

The Prospects

In the main, Shelvey’s move to Swansea has been greeted with a large degree of scepticism, though reports indicate Michael Laudrup was keen to push the move through.

Although Shelvey is versatile enough to play in a deeper, central position in addition to the role in “the hole”, there’s no doubt he has real competition to nail down a regular spot under Laudrup. The likes of Leon Britton, Ki Sung-Yeung, de Guzman and Canas could vie for the “double pivot” positions in Laudrup’s preferred 4-2-3-1, while Pozuelo, de Guzman, Pablo Hernandez and Wayne Routledge all offer alternatives to Michu as the most advanced midfielder behind a lone forward.

There’s an argument that Shelvey’s more physical approach may help his game time if the Swans boss is looking for a little extra steel in front of the back-four, though from a Fantasy perspective, such a scenario hardly boosts his appeal. Further up the field, he’s only likely to get a chance if Michu is either rested or pushed into a forward role, though with the Welsh club linked with moves for Bafetimbi Gomis or Wilfried Bony, the Spaniard may see less time up front next time round.

With Laudrup keen to strengthen his squad as Swansea prepare for the defence of the Capital One Cup and Europa League duties, rest and rotation could well blight the vast majority of their squad. While Shelvey seems optimistic that the move will boost his minutes, it’s difficult to see how he will go about cementing a regular role. Although he’s likely to come in as a mid-price midfield option across the Fantasy games, then, (around 5.5 to 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated) it may take injuries and suspension to others to boost his prospects as a regular for the season ahead. With United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks, even Michu may struggle to persuade early investors to jump on board – Fantasy managers will likely start the season steering well clear of Shelvey, only reassessing the situation if Laudrup decides he deserves more than just bench-warming duties.

The Daily Mirror says that Barcelona striker David Villa has reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham and it is now down to the two clubs to agree a fee.

It is reported that Spurs’ offer to Barca, however, has not yet met the £8.6million price that the Spanish champions are demanding.

    question about our opta stats:

does anyone know whether or not there is a direct correlation between big chances and goals scored? what i'm wondering is if there are chances created for goals that are then NOT classified as "big chances".

for example, QPR scored 30 goals and had 43 big chances. does that mean that they missed 13 big chances? or could they have missed 20 big chances and scored 7 goals from "little chances"?

    any opta experts about?

Opta's definition of a 'big chance' is "a situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score, usually in a one on one scenario or from very close range".

It most certainly is possible to score from chances which are not classified as 'big', in fact most goals are scored from non-big chances. As a result, there won't be much of a correlation between big chances conceded and total goals conceded because goals come from many other sources.

However there is (by definition) more of a correlation between big chances conceded and goals conceded from big chances.

That's a difficult question, but from what I saw of him then IMHO he's comparable to Lukaku.
You can never be sure when a player moves to the EPL, but the way that he was marked in the Gambrinus league and his ability to outwit his markers and get into attacking and scoring positions was on the same level, and he also stuck a shedload of opportunities away.

    Morning Gents,

Last season I was lucky/clever enough to have picked Michu from the off based on last season/preseason form, and a bit of a hunch.

This season I've got a strange hunch that Jesus Navas is going to be that guy.

At what price point are we expecting him to be, and what price will he represent good value. Will he be a rotation risk?

    Discuss!

I think he has to be a rotation risk with Nasri.. £8-8.5m seems about right to me in terms of his price, similar to Kagawa's initial price last year.

David Villa past it a few years ago? I don't think so. He was pretty potent in the 2010 world cup from what I recall. He then had a decent enough 1st season with Barcelona before injuries hit..

He's a risk for sure, but I think he's still a class act, even if he isn't as good as he once was.

No, Messi ruined him. Just like he will ruin Neymar. That's why Ronaldinho, Zlatan, Bojan, etc have had to leave Barca in the past. Once Villa leaves Barca I think he can rediscover his form.

Not sure with RVP, you can still get a stunning midfield. At the very best, another heavy hitter and 2 medium priced midfielders imo.

I'd prefer Altidore and Cornelius if i'm going cheap at the front. But remember the striking department is where you'll usually get most points in the game.

27.5m is a considerable outlay when you don't know how the players in question will adapt/be used by their new managers.

You could probably get kun, sturridge and cisse/kone for that kind of money

Moyes seems to like inside forwards more than natural wingers (Pienaar + Mirallas) so i could see potential from the United midfield this season. Fellaini Mirallas and Pienaar were all a decent source of points at some point in the season.

United don't sign midfielders. We might just be signing one.

That is enough. That is HUGE!

    So after Part 1( http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/07/moving-target-jonjo-shelvey/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_5020008 )Here's part 2.....

    Man City:

At the back: After a strong defensive performance last season i'd expect many will be looking at investing, and I can't really look past Nastasic, who is likely to be the cheapest option in the backline at around £6.0m. Although Clichy could also be an option if Kolarov leaves. The return of Micah Richards could mean rotation at right-back for Zabaleta. Kompany could be a decent option if he comes in below his £7.5m price tag and delivers the returns of 2 seasons ago, however I wouldn't spend £7.0m on a centre-half.

Up Top: After rotation haunted us last year many will be looking to find a nailed on option in the new look City attack under Pellegrini, and after the departure of fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez to Juventus Sergio Aguero now looks like an excellent prospect at around the £11.0m mark. Silva could also be a decent option if he returns consistently like 2 seasons ago, at around £9.0m. Yaya Toure may excel from the arrival of Fernandinho, allowing the Ivorian more freedom to venture up top, and he could come in at £8.0m. I would avoid Navas due to his poor stats in previous seasons. Many will look towards Aguero as a strong captaincy option next season if City get off to a flyer.

    Man United:

At the back: United defenders are likely to be inflated in price this season, and with the arrival of David Moyes I can't see much investment from the off, especially with some unfavourable fixtures to begin with. However as the season progresses United will probably shore up at the back, and de Gea could be a nailed-on option at £6.0m. The rest of the United defence is likely to be expensive and/or rotated. Rafael will suffer from rotation at £6.5m, as will Vidic, Ferdinand and Evans(All £6.5m/£6.0m). Evra could be nailed on if Baines doesn't arrival but he'll set you back around £7.0m at the least.

Up Top: There's one man that you cannot look past when it comes to the United attack and that is Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman notched 26 goals and picked up 15 assists last season and is certainly the most consistent performer in the league and a solid captain choice, no matter who the opponent is. He's likely to cost you £13.0m but that could well be worth it if he has a season like the last. However many may not be willing to splash the cash on van persie and look towards his Japanese counterpart Shinji Kagawa who, after a poor season, is likely to come in at £8.0m and could play in behind Van Persie this season and pick up more than the mere 4 assists he did last term. Rooney is still an option but a risky one at that, providing he stays I reckon he could be pushed wide to the left and be limited to goals this season.

    Newcastle:

At the back: With only 6 clean sheets last season, compared to 15 the season before it was a relatively poor season for the Geordie side which could see them become an option once again this season. Krul is likely to come in at £5.0m after his injury issues last season, and maybe a cut-price option at £4.5m may emerge in the form of Santon/Debuchy. Rotation could be an issue with Coloccini, S.Taylor and Frenchman Yanga-Mbiwa all vying for 2 centre-back spots.

Up top: Pappis Cisse could become a decent option this year after the departure of Demba Ba
and a likely price decrease, however the one many are looking at is Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman has showed glimpses of promise over the past two seasons and many are hoping he can convert that into a solid season, coming in at around the £7.0m mark. As will Yohan Cabaye, who will be on set pieces once again this season and looking to improve on last season, which was plagued by injury. Could be some value here.

    Norwich:

At the back: After an impressive season defensive wise, with the Canaries picking up 10 clean sheets. Many defenders will come in at the £5.0m mark, particularly Bassong and maybe Garrido. Turner and R.Martin and likely to offer value at £4.5m, as will Ruddy, who, after injury last season, could come in at as little as £4.5m.

Up Top: Snodgrass had an excellent season last year with 6 goals and 9 assists, which is likely to be enhanced by the arrival of Dutchman Ricky van Wolfswinkel. van Wolfswinkel scored 14 goals in 30 league games last year and looks to emulate it in the Premier League this season, and should come in around the £7.0m mark, similar to Snodgrass. I wouldn't look past those two for Norwich cover.

    Southampton:

At the back: This season's rotation darlings could offer much value at the back in the form of Shaw, Clyne and Boruc, all likely to be £4.5m. The Saints will be hoping to develop on the 7 clean sheets picked up last year as Mauricio Pochettino brings in Croatian Dejan Lovren who is likely to play at the back with Yoshida and offer some goal threat.

Up Top: Rickie Lambert picked up 15 goals and 8 assists last term as he finished as the 9th highest FPL scorer and is likely to receive a heavy price increase, leaving many looking at Jay Rodriguez to emulate his end of season form and offer some value in the Soton frontline at around £6.0m. Gaston Ramirez should also be an option at the £6.0m mark, and showed glimpses of talent last year that should be converted to FPL points this term.

    Stoke:

At the back: After an excellent beginning to last year the Stoke defence began to tail off during the back end of the season. As a result of 12 clean sheets last year we could see heavy inflation in the Stoke backline. However if Marc Muniesa or Wilson could be worthy of investment if either get a decent run in the side, as could Erik Pieters.

Up Top: After struggling for goals last year I doubt many will invest in the Stoke attack, However Charlie Adam could be a decent option if he is on set-pieces at around £6.0m.

    Sunderland:

At the back: Di Canio will be looking to improve on the 11 clean sheets last year and has already made signings at the back, which could prompt rotation in the S'land backline. However the main fantasy prospect in the Sunderland defence is the goalkeeper. Vito Mannone is likely to come in at £4.5 and could offer excellent value if he's number 1.

Up top: Sessegnon(in the hole) and A.Johnson will be looking to continue where they left off at around £6.5m, and could provide value if Di Canio's side become free scoring. After Steven Fletcher's injury he could become excellent value around the £7.0m mark, and providing he avoids injury should hit double figures goal wise once again.

    Swansea:

At the back: After Ben Davies offered us value like Neil Taylor the season before I expect the Swans defence to be expensive, and with Europa League commitments this could hinder their league performances. However Vorm could be a decent option if he comes in at around £5.0m and doesn't suffer from rotation.

Up top: Michu is likely to be expensive next year and possibly classified as a forward. Pablo Hernandez is probably your best bet for next season if he can get consistent starts and transfer his excellent performances into FPL points. The imminent arrival of Bony could also provide us with an option, after the Ivorian notched 31 goals in 30 games for Vitesse in the Eredivisie last season.

    Spurs:

At the back: Jan Vertonghen should be the best option here at £6.5m as he's likely to offer attacking returns alongside clean sheets. A cut-price option could emerge if BAE leaves and/or Rose nails down the Left-Back spot.

Up Top: Bale. The Welshman will be essential this year once again and will come in at around the £11.5m, but will still be worth it with consistent returns and the ability to provide a decent captaincy option week in week out. Spurs under AVB aren't exactly free scoring but if David Villa arrives at the Lane he could be a decent option at around £9.0m up top, as could Dempsey if he gets a run in the side.

    West Brom:

At the back: West Brom could be excellent value this year if Billy Jones nails down his Right-Back spot and comes in at £4.5m. So could Foster at £5.0m, who also offers save points alongside clean sheet potential. Could be some excellent value here.

Up top: After the departure of loanee Lukaku, Shane Long could be a decent option up top with Regular starts, as could James Morrison if he is in the hole and comes in around the £6.5m mark. I expect West Brom to invest in a winger this summer, otherwise Odemwingie could be a decent option from the wing.

    West Ham:

At the back: After providing value last year the Hammers defence are likely to be costly this year, however if we have a nailed on £4.5m defender they could offer value once again this year under Big Sam, who has already bought Razvan Rat to shore up the Left-Back spot. Guy Demel may suffer from rotation this year....

Up Top: New signing Andy Carroll will likely offer value up top this year, unlike Kevin Nolan who should receive a heavy price increase. Matt Jarvis could also be an option this year if he stays away from the treatment table.

RE: Spurs - if we end up with a settled LB they will be one of the better bargains in the league. Expect us to tighten up a fair bit this year with possibly 3 defensively minded midfielders and Lloris settled and playing from the start.
