Scout Report – Nacer Chadli

Tottenham confirmed their second deal of the summer transfer window on Sunday, with the acquisition of Nacer Chadli from Dutch club FC Twente. The versatile 23-year-old Belgian joins up at White Hart Lane on a five-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m and follows Paulinho to the club, as Andre Villas-Boas bolsters his midfield options for the season ahead.

The Spurs boss was clearly delighted to announce the deal yesterday, with the new boy already joining his team mates for training ahead of tomorrow’s Barclays Asia Trophy match against Sunderland in Hong Kong:

“Nacer Chadli is a player that we have been following for quite some time and we managed to strike the deal in these last days. So we’re pretty happy. As a player he is extremely versatile, playing different positions up front. He has played with tremendous success on the left for Twente as a winger and as an attacker for Belgium.”

The History

Chadli’s youth career spanned across three Belgian clubs, including Standard Liege, but his big break arrived in 2007 courtesy of Dutch second division outfit AGOVV Apeldoorn. He spent a total of three seasons at the club and, having produced 11 goals and nine assists over 52 appearances in his first couple of years, stepped up a level with 17 goals and 11 assists from 37 games in 2009/10.

Snapped up by FC Twente in the summer of 2010, Chadli immediately became a key member of the first-team. His first two years at the club harvested 13 goals and 11 assists from 56 Eredivisie matches before he once again improved during his third season, with 12 goals and five assists from 26 games (including play-off matches). The Belgian also chipped in with six goals and six assists in 10 Europa League matches in 2012/13, a sign of his flourishing eye for goal. On the international stage, Chadli has turned out for his country on 14 occasions and has found the net twice.

The Prospects

Predominantly right-footed, Chadli’s adaptability means he can be fielded anywhere across the forward line, though his preferred position is on the left as an inverted winger, cutting inside onto his stronger foot. Standing six foot two, his strength, pace and trickery down the flank, allied with a penchant for a long shot, could well see the Belgian quickly nail down a starting role in Villas-Boas’ first-team.

Far more significantly, his acquisition could be key to how we assess Gareth Bale’s likely position in the season ahead. The signing of Paulinho earlier this summer had suggested Villas-Boas was primed to move to a 4-3-3 with the Welshman on the flank but it now seems more likely that Chadli’s arrival will ensure Bale remains in the central slot behind a lone forward in a 4-2-3-1. Villas-Boas has utilised the likes of Clint Dempsey, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby on the left last term in order to play Bale in “the hole” but none of the trio offered the speed of Bale or, indeed, Aaron Lennon on the opposite flank – a problem for Villas-Boas, given how crucial the idea of quick transitions are to his tactical approach.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, it’s likely that Chadli will come in around the 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – putting him on a par with Lennon and Dempsey, and just slightly more than Sigurdsson and Paulinho at 7.0 apiece. Providing Bale keeps the central role, the Welshman looks almost essential after racking up 14 sets of double figures last time out but a hugely enticing run of fixtures could also bring the Belgian into contention from the off. With Palace, Swansea, Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa and Hull in seven of the first nine Gameweeks, doubling up on the pair could be a viable tactic for those who feel the idea of “coverage” is somewhat over-rated.

I think I wouldn't look to much Into his production falling of the end of last season... Considering when Swansea won the cup their motivation was minimal due to already being safe from the drop. Michu is a proven talent and consider him a season keeper so 9 mil looks not to bad value

because nto a lot of people are showing interest so could be a nice differential, although u have walcott 9.5 and coutinho 9.0 etc. at the same price tag. Its gonna be a tough call.

I totally agree and have michu in my team... I like couthino but feel with the uncertainty behind suezez think he is over priced... Swansea are starting to build a nice little team around michu

I really like your midfield.... However if bale stays which I think he does you must have him!!! Fellani is abit of a risk but again nice differential..

Your defence is abit average to be honest.... Not sure if toure and Dawson are locks to start

The bench doesn't really offer you much for increasing in value , like u can only really expect to get 2 points max from both mikel and Britton

    My team is as follows

    Vorm

    Collins clyne Coleman natastic

    Bale michu Walcott

    Van wolfwrinkle RVP weinman

    Bench

Turner( nor) Brady (hull) William (cp)

Went with two promoted players in Brady and Williams for really low risk high reward

Wow u got RVP and bale in, nice team, thing is tho will bale make up for ur two weaker strikers, whereas I feel lukaku and sturridge are nailed on for goal or assist almost every game, although I will be taking out sturridge if Suarez stays and finishes his ban. I like to go for strikers from too teams that are the main men, which is why I stay away from city strikers as u don't know what way they will rotate. As they may play 5 midfield cos it's so strong. Ur right on toure and Dawson, but Sunderland have nice opening games which is why I've chosen keeper and def and zab will play so tbh I just need to make a decision on toure and Dawson, then I think I have first 5/6 weeks covered.

I have been playing around with it heaps trying to work a decent team with both bale and RVp which is very difficult but I'm really happy now. If you want to go well in this game u need to take risks aswell as the sure things... Van wolfwrinkle is my real risk might be a total flop or might be this seasons lambert. I'm a spurs fan and personally think Dawson is a safer bet then toure... I can see them playing kaboul and Dawson with vert and walker on the wings..

Really interesting thread. I've played for the last few seasons but this is my first time on FFS! I've done the unthinkable and have gone with Aguero in favour of RVP given the initial set of fixtures. After a few drafts I'm looking at:

      Mignolet

      Mertesaker Coleman Collins (Clyne)

      Bale Walcott Coutinho Hazard

      Rodriguez Aguero Anelka

Subs: Davis Clyne (Collins) Thomas Chester

My logic is that Aguero and Bale will offer more than RVP and another £9m midfielder. What do you reckon?

Just checked and arsenal actually have a nice run in for the first 10 weeks bar a team or 2.
Gonna get mert into my team.

Thats a serious midfield there, but again its really up to the person, whether to go heavy midfield or upfront, In the past ive had great success up front,

My good mate who is a diehard city fan reckons nattastic is nailed on to start... To save .5 well question is we're would u put that extra .5 and at least with zab he doesn't mind a cheeky assist or goal nattasic not sure he offers that ?? If u can really use the money to upgrade else where do it otherwise I would still roll with zab if u are not sure

My personal worry with aguero Is risk of rotation and his poor form pretty much all of last season....the reasoning I have for bale and rvp is they are both such dominate players come fantasy both offer excellent alternating captain choices each week.... Neither are at risk for rotation and I just feel their prices will not drop over the course of the season. Much easier to have both now, then struggle to gather funds mid season afford them.... Of course this might all change if bale leaves but currently u can't see how anyone can boy have him...Rvp in my opinion jumps into the same group of must have with bale if Rooney leaves which who knows what's going to happen...

yes this is v.true and i did this last season, Brought in top players i knew would grow in price and worked a team aroudn them, as come 10 weeks time, you are throwing away money trying to get them into team, at end of the day id love bale in my team, but i just can tafford him, any thoughts how i could get him in? keep in mind i really want to keep my front line

Only way I can possibly see it working is downgrading that defence... I would bring in clyne or shaw from Southampton and maybe a Collins from west ham? Does that work ?

What about bringing in Bale for Walcott and changing from Michu/Fellaini to options like Ben Arfa/Mirallas/Lennon/

Ben Arfa/Mirallas arent gonna earn u much tbh. cant have lennon and bale.
if i drop fellaini and change michu to bale, then my defense stays as it was and ive 5.5 left for another midfielder.

                so:
                Mertesacker Dawson Nastatic Cuellar

                Bale Walcott

                Lukaku RVP Sturridge

                5..5m left in bank.

yes defo an option, cos i Jose love s a big tank upfront (drgoba) so i think lukaku will play main role, but if more strikers come in, ill be getting rid, cos like i said, i like strikers that dont have much competition for their position or no roation risk. ill defo keep eye on that, cheers for chat pal.

Agree about the risk of rotation, although I feel with the signings city have made it's likely to be Aguero and one of Negredo / Jovetic, will be interesting to look at what happens pre-season. Haven't gone with RVP at this point as utd have got a tough run of opening fixtures and I can only see his value going down if he doesn't score in the first few games. I'd also have to downgrade in my midfield and I'm not convinced by the £6-7m options at the moment.

Arsenal/Southampton/Tottenham have got a very good run of games first up - I'm backing Southampton to have a good season this year. Will also be interesting to see if Toure can get consistent starts at Liverpool, he looks good value if so
