The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

Well Negredo did score in the 20 minutes he was on, so it's really not all that unlikely.

Benching your only goal scorer (who has proven himself to be very clutch) when you're tied against Cardiff also makes little sense, but it happens.

    PRICE CHANGES

Thanks to my inability to sleep at a decent hour I've been following the price changes for a couple of seasons now. As you've probably noticed, price changes are occurring less frequently this year and the reason is very simple. There's also a fair amount of confusion about price changes with the same questions being asked all the time. So might as well clear everything up here in one place.

(Skip this paragraph if you're already familiar with price changes work.) Price changes occur every night, currently around 2.40am BST (1.40am GMT). If any player's net transfers (transfers in - transfers out) exceeds the rise threshold, they rise. If it is below the fall threshold, they fall.

    RISES

The rise threshold is fixed. It's the same regardless of how many people own the player. The difference this year is that the rise threshold has been increased, practically doubled, to 65,000. This has reduced the number of rises.

    FALLS

The fall threshold is not fixed. It depends on how many people own the player. It is set as a % of this ownership figure. Again, the difference this year is that the fall threshold has been increased. I can't remember last year's threshold exactly, but I think it has also roughly doubled. This has reduced the number of fallers.

So what is the fall threshold? There are 3 fall thresholds, one for each injury flag (green (or no flag), yellow, red). This is done in order to prevent you from instantly going bankrupt just because your player got ruled out of the next game. Inspection of a few players on these flags gives the following estimates for the fall thresholds:

    Green flag: 15% of ownership
    Yellow flag; 20% of ownership
    Red flag: 40% of ownership

    FAQ
Finally, a few answers to frequently asked questions.

Q: Does the rise threshold double/triple for the second/third rise?
A: No, that was a few seasons ago.

    Q: Is there really a limit of 3 rises/falls in a week?
A: Last two seasons there indisputably was and it was observed on a regular basis. This season we haven't had a chance to test it but I assume it's still there. In any event, the higher thresholds make such an event far less common.

Q: Does the price change time vary over the season?
A: In the time I've seen it the price changes are set by GMT. So for British users, the price changes will occur one hour earlier when the clocks go back (last Sunday of October to last Sunday of March), assuming this is still the case this season.

Q: Where do you check price changes?
    A: TotalFPL (http://totalfpl.com/pricechanges) & FISO (http://www.fiso.co.uk/crackthecode.php).

    Q: Which one's better?
A: They're both OK. I use both to be sure but if pushed FISO because they show the thresholds.

Let me know of any errors/omissions here. Cheers.

NB: Rise threshold is fixed between players but does go down slowly over the season (based on the last two seasons). This is because the number of active players goes down over the season, and unlike the fall threshold the rise threshold is an absolute number.

Think it was the sheer lack of transfers going on. After the weekend there is little transfer activity in midweek, in a normal gw. Only really picks up on pre deadline day... er I mean, Friday 😆 basically that midweek goes on for 9-10 days in an international break.

Ah, protection? Yeah, I'm leaving that out because I'm not sure about that. I know at some stage protection was definitely there for players coming off a red flag. Price wouldn't change for 8 days. Think new players to the game are meant to be protected too, haven't checked though. Protection seemed to be erratically enforced or downright disappear at points last season though. We'll have to wait and see but these are the precedents to go Kompany

Thats the jist of it alright iasacki (not sure about one or two details but I reckon you have hit the nail mostly on the head).

This does bring into doubt further the use of the early wc as one of the reason always thrown out was "I want to build team value". This looks like something that cannot really be achieved to any great success under the current system which is excellent imo.

If we can knock out all the gambling on early transfers to beat price rises and not have soo much value tied up in players we might actually have a degree of flexibility in our teams come the second half of the year instead of 5/6 big players with so much value tied up in them that we can't afford to move them on.

Well done fpl on this. Pity about the new bonus system.

Yep that was my motivation actually to clear up price changes, as wildcards are being played on the assumption of a value bonanza that has been nerfed, in gamer speak 😆

I agree it's a good thing value has been made less important in FPL by the changes. Less knee jerking, less fear of moving on from past successes too.

Keeping an open mind on the new bonus system, I love the live BPS and personally like the points not going to the goalscorers with such regularity, that's one criticism we had of BAPS last year, that they were merely an extension of regular scoring. They have addressed that judging on the first two gas IMO. But that's another debate, maybe you could take a look.

Gets pretty technical but the threshold is an ongoing debate at FISO forums. The administrators are trying to understand it but this is the best I can understand of it so far: there are some transfers in that are included in the official transfers in figure FPL provides (http://fantasy.premierleague.com/stats/elements/?element_filter=te_4&stat_filter=transfers_in) but do not actually count towards the rise threshold. These are suspected to be wildcard transfers, and players selected in new teams. As a result players with lots of these transfers have their net transfers significantly overestimated on FISO. Hence the rise threshold could be somewhat lower than the net transfer figure they fail to rise on.

You can follow all this at the official FISO CTC thread: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/crack-the-code-2013-14-the-fiso-guide-to-fpl-price-changes-t103498-30.html

A few seasons ago, the transfers in and transfers out totals suddenly increased enormously. I suspect that someone was deliberately making vast numbers of automated transfers in and out for the same players in order to upset the statistics. The NTI would not be affected, but some players only look at the figures separately without working out the difference. I presume that whoever did this was doing it either on a wildcard or with a wooden spoon team. It may be that FPL now detect such things and no longer count them towards the transfers in and transfers out totals.

Good background mate, thanks. You will have to read through the thread to make sure I haven't got the wrong end of the stick here, but I understand FPL stopped reporting a key stat this season and that is causing FISO problems. It may well have been NTI and all we have now is transfers in and transfers out, exactly the problem you describe.

It ought to be easy enough for FISO to calculate NTI from the difference between transfers in and transfers out, but it did give a misleading impression of who the most transferred players were if you only looked at either transfers in or transfers out on their own.

Perhaps there is some other stat that used to be supplied directly to FISO without being listed on FPL and isn't any more, but I would be a bit surprised about that since the algorithm used is supposed to be secret.

What is not obvious, however, is how many transfers are being discounted and for what reason, and this must make it more difficult to estimate the thresholds.

The problem really only arises if the discounted transfers are not equally shared between transfers in and transfers out, i.e. if the NTI figure used to decide price changes is different from the difference between the published figures for transfers in and transfers out.

Had a deeper read of the thread and this seems to be the state of play.

Last season FPL published the NTI figure, on the transfers page I think. It was not equal to the difference between transfers in and transfers out. This has always been true. This figure has been removed this season.

                Source: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/post2338811.html#p2338811

So this year they only have transfers in - transfers out to go by. One of them checked to see if the discrepancy between NTI and transfers in - transfers out was caused by something simple like multiplying by a fixed factor. (How did they get NTI if it is no longer published this year? Change in ownership is my best guess.) It wasn't. "I was wondering if there was a fixed factor. Short answer is there wasn't. It completely varied up and down the player list, therefore this indicates to me a set of transfers do not get counted, and I can only imagine that's WCs."

                Source: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/post2338982.html#p2338982

Now, this is where you might have hit the bullseye, one of them suspects that NTI may not be the key factor used to decide price changes anymore. "The removal of the key figure of NTI may not mean they've gone and hidden it just to spite us. We cant be certain it's still relevant to the calculation. I noticed this morning that Total Transfers In "might" be a key factor......"

So the figure they use to decide price changes may well be different from transfers in - transfers out.

                Source: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/post2338811.html#p2338811

Finally they note due to the FPL changes this season, the accuracy of FISO has been seriously affected. "The change on the FPL side has seriously affected the accuracy of CTC - please use it as a guide only for the time being." This seems to also be the case at TotalFPL, where they stopped updating the price changes on Saturday.

                  Thanks, Isacki.
I had assumed that NTI was always equal to transfers in - transfers out, and didn't realise that it was a different statistic or that it used to be listed separately by FPL. I suppose it is logical that players in new teams (that's teams new to FPL, not just ones that have been changed by wildcards) should count towards transfers in but not towards NTI. I would expect wildcard transfers to count towards transfers in and transfers out, but perhaps when the same player is transferred in and out multiple times by the same FPL team in the same GW then this should only count as a single transfer in or out.

Is it possible that NTI = transfers in - transfers out - players in new teams? Unfortunately, we probably can't do this calculation ourselves, since we do not know the totals of players in completely new FPL teams!

      Great post, Isacki.

I thought the rise threshold used to be a percentage of the total number of players (including inactive ones). Has this changed?

I will also be interested to know about whether players will still be protected when their flag is removed or when they are new to FPL. Perhaps you can post an update when you know this?

You're right - one administrator on FISO says for the last two seasons the rise threshold was set at 1.5% of total teams (including inactive ones presumably). (http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/post2335754.html#p2335754)

So apparently rise thresholds actually rose in the first couple of weeks due to extra teams joining. Rise thresholds fell for most of the season though. IMO this shows it cannot be just about the number of total teams because that number can never fall. We don't need to worry too much about the mechanism because the rise threshold FISO & TotalFPL show is an estimate derived from evidence every night (the lowest net transfers figure of all the risers that night). Hence this estimate will be close to whatever the real rise threshold is, however they calculate it.

As said, not sure about protection. Will monitor FISO topic and update as necessary.

(BTW I assume when he says "the rise threshold was set at 1.5% of total teams" he means initially before any price changes occurred, because as said the threshold is refined every night from the actual price changes)

NB: Dino, you prompted me to check some of the details and yes the falls are more complex. I had an interesting though rather difficult interview with someone on TFPL who ran their own price change algorithm and they had quite a lot to say about the falls. The % figures for each flag fall over the season. Also, there are apparently 7 flags. This is because yellow is divided into 25%/50%/75% doubt flags and red is (apparently) divided into injury/suspension/international duty flags, plus the green flag. Apparently all yellow flags have the same fall threshold, while the red flags differ. Finally, if you haven't drowned in too much information yet, the absolute number of transfers out does matter, so anyone with more than say 40k transfers out is looking at a fall regardless of what % of the fall threshold they are on.

          Apologies for the prolix.

Actually his price would drop pretty quickly. So everyone would rush to get him out. And it would stuff a team up for atleast the next 2 gws unless you take a hit. To spend all that rvp money. Not to mention the failed gw of having him as (c) and he comes off injured) it would be a setback to all rvp owners. Amd more importantly man u

Whittingham is a better option but he won't score all that much so long as he is playing on the wing.

His set pieces are crazy good: he put some fantastic dead balls in last night and at times had almost perfect placement.

I think he's a great 5th option and will try to get him in two weeks from now for Ravel.

My post was aimed at ppl who wanted to swap kim for whittingham.. that is nuts imo. i still think kim is gonna be a gem though. Whittingham looks gr8 i gotta admit but it is purely cause of set pieces. Playing on the wing and not that gr8 a threat from open play. 4 of his 5 chances were created from set pieces and apart from his shot from the FK the others were purely speculative. Kim is one of those clinical players.. will create less but score more imo. Playing in the hole and looking very comfortable at this level. Speaking as a person who watched him grow from the championship, to preseason to now of course.. not just the one game. The everton game will allow kim to shine imo.. Yet again though, both are good options

I didn't see your post about Kim to Whittingham but I've seen about 34 others about how awesome Kim is 🙂

    Guys, need some help 🙂

I'm not doing very great but not very bad too (OR 110k). I already got rid of Chelsea trio after GW 1 so no worries about blank GW this time.

Coutinho is the only main concern for me. I was thinking about switching to Michu but his form isn't great too. However it's my free transfer. Sooner or later I'll be selling Coutinho so is this the time to do it?

Dawson is club captain, and if he gets drops I think it will be for Kaboul - and you will hear about it in advance (think Friedel/Lloris)

Im not sure i can ge bothered dismantling my team just to fit Van Persie in for an hours play against C Palace.
They have a euro game midweek after the palace match and are then away to Man C.

Will just cpt Benteke at home to Newcy or Solddo home to Norwich

    Advantages
    1) Wont have to spend eight points over the next two weeks to fit him in
    2) Will be able to field the likes of Silva this week without having to have some
loser like Brady in my team

Even if Van Persie scores two against Palace and my capt fails i still think my team will be better off overall

          why?

RVP cost 14M and add him budget striker like Rodrigez and that's total of 20M

Sturridge+Giroud cost 17.5M and they will outscore RVP+budget striker every week

aslo both of them have possibility to outscore RVP alone

            Because;

            - You don't have to have a budget striker, you can save money in defence and/or midfield

            - It depends on how your cheaper player goes, if you had someone like Brady etc. over Coutinho, Waclott and so on you'd be better off so far...even though RVP *only* managed 2 goals last week and not the necessary 3 goals.

Who'd have thunk already, in GW2,that I'd be hoping Hazard is rested tonight so that my Hull benchwarming midfielder could come on as autosub?!

He's somehow managed to sneak into my team without anyone noticing. You can have him for a tenner if you want?

    Should I:

    A) Do Ivan > Collins and Lukaku > Aguero for a 4 pt hit (then all defenders will be < 5.0m)
    B) Just do Lukaku > Sturridge with my FT and keep Ivan

    Don't need RVP 😯

Giroud, Soldado, Benteke, Sturridge, Aguero (if he nails down that starting berth) are viable other 5 alternative Premium Strikers (atleast looks like that at the moment)

Better value than RVP & Captain Benteke everytime! 🙂
